Finder window tab status not preserved

OK, so Apple is going with Finder tabs.
However, after reorganizing my desktop, and making use of tabs to "replace" the desktop with one large Finder window, I find that tabs are not preserved between sessions!!!
Do I really have to restore the tabs manually every time I turn the computer on???

i was getting the spinning grey wheel in status bar, with no files displaying.
this thread describes re-launching Finder - which did the trick for me - though my issue was with the internal hard drive, not an external

  • Where is the "Always open folder in new Finder Window/Tab" option ?

Prior to 10.9, we have an options to choose whether to open folders in the same window in Finder preference. But I can't find anything similiar to that in Mavericks. Now I'm forced to open folders within the same window / tab, unless I press the CMD key while double clicking on the folder, and I still yet to find a way to do so with keyboard navigation.
    Did I missed something ?

Yes I know that, but that option is completely useless, since you're forced to open a folder within the same tab.
Even with that option turned on, you still can "open folder in new tab" only by holding CMD key while double-clicking on a folder. And there is still no way to open a folder in new tab with keyboard navigation: CMD+O or CMD+Down-Arrow will always open folder within same tab.
So I consider this as a bug; maybe someone just forget to enable this option in the Finder preference dialogbox.
Is there any terminal command (defaultswrite ?) or 3rd party tool like TinkerTool, OnyX or Deeper that can change the default behavior of Finder ?

  • Finder Window Size Issues (not resizing properly)

everytime I open a window in the finder it opens and I drag to resize and then close. I reopen the folder and its size is wrong not what I just resized to. This happens on every finder window not opening how I resized it. Any clues?

This has been pet peeve of mine for years. Apple invented windows, but it seems to be the only developer which is incapable of programming the operation of this basic interface correctly. Even Microsoft Windoze got this right when they stole the concept. When you hit the resize button in a Microsoft application the window does the same thing - every time, while every Macintosh application acts differently when you click the green button...very annoying, to say the least.

  • Windows file attributes not preserved

    Hi,
When Windows(XP) clients connect to file shares (from a 10.4.7 server) and open the Properties dialog for a file, they are able to set the various Attributes (Read-only, Hidden, Archive).
However, on re-opening the Properties dialog, they find that the attribute settings they have made have not been preserved. (ie. All attributes checkboxes are unchecked.)
Does anybody know if there are any settings I need to change on the server to enable support for Windows file attributes?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob.

  • Issues with Finder - window 'view type' not sticking, picture backgrounds

Since my upgrade from Snow Leopard, I've noticed a few minor problems with the Finder in Lion.
Can anyone confirm if these are known bugs in Lion?
    1. At random, certain folders will not remember their view type anymore. Some do, some don't. Logging in as root and changing them there has fixed some, but others keep reverting back to a "default". It happens at any point while I am using the system, even without logging out or restarting. I've changed folder view types and come back 10 minutes later and they've changed on me! I used to have this problem with Tiger and Leopard, but not Snow Leopard. Seems it's back with Lion 10.7.0.
    2. Under Snow Leopard I had various JPG and PNG photos used as backgrounds for various folders in icon view. Under Lion, almost all of these backgrounds now only occupy one small corner of the window. They are not being displayed at their full size. The fact that they worked in Snow Leopard indicates there are no problems with the photos themselves.
    3. Various problems with grid layout in icon view. Dragging an icon to it's proper position in the grid will often not "stick". i.e. I line it up perfectly with the grid yet the icon goes flying off half way across the screen to another position. The Finder seems a lot less forgiving than Snow Leopard in this regard.
Since everything was runing perfectly for me in Snow Leopard I assume these are bugs that will hopefully be ironed out in future system updates.

It used to do that, and it does for other desktops on computer, just not mine.

  • "File, Find, Searching "This Mac" or "New Finder Window" not finding files ?

    I an iMac 7,1, Mac OS X 10.6.8, Build 10K549,
I have noticed on many occasions recently that when I ma using either ...
    File, Find, Searching "This Mac"
    or
    "New Finder Window"
I am NOT finding the files I am looking for ...
I now they are there, so I go through all my folders, and find the files, or folders I am looking for ...
So why could this be happening, why are they not found in the search ?
Is there a fix or addition ?

As baltwo eventually explained, you have to add the search criteria "System files" to your search, with the option "Include" selected, to find many items Spotlight otherwise excludes from search results. Alternately (& quite ridiculously), if your search is restricted to the parent folder containing the item, you don't need to add this.
For example, if you open /Library in the Finder, enter "Desktop Pictures" in the search box, you won't get it in the results with the default "This Mac" location, but if you click "Library" for the location, you will. (Yes, many users think this is bizarre, "what were they thinking?" behavior.)
What Spotlight considers "system files" is only slightly less bizarre, as you will probably discover once you start using it to broaden searches. For instance, Safari history items & Mail.app messages are not found unless you include system files, but many files like C Header Source files (in System/Library/Frameworks) are found without including system files in the search.
When it was introduced in Tiger, Spotlight was supposed to be a next-generation search engine, capable of accurately guessing what you were looking for (& filtering out what you weren't) with near-sentient intelligence. I think almost anyone who used that version will agree it did not achieve that lofty goal. Apple apparently agreed, or at least listened to the complaints enough to realize it needed rethinking. Unfortunately, what its designers came up with for the Leopard rethink feels like an early beta version, full of hastily implemented, quirky features that never got sorted out before it was released.
We can only hope that we won't have to wait for OS 10.6 for a more mature, less quirky version.

  • Cannot switch to open finder windows

when i command-tab to finder, my currently open finder windows do not appear! if i re-launch finder, finder behaves normally for a little while, but at some point open finder windows simply do not appear when i switch to the finder. i've properly switched to finder because my menubar says so; and if i use expose i can see that i do have a finder window indeed open, it's just hidden behind whatever application i was switching from.
at first i noticed this problem was occurring right after running certain automator workflows as finder plug-ins; only some caused this to happen, not all of my finder plug-ins. i ran the workflows IN automator and it did not cause the problem, but immediately after running them from the finder the problem appeared. i've been using these workflows for months: appzapper, cleanapp, and a couple i made.
but even if i don't invoke those workflows, the problem duplicates itself eventually, until i'm forced to restart finder!

    SOLVED.
problem: having items in both the /Library/Contextual Menu Items and ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items.
the program NoteTaker by Aquaminds automatically installs an item into your global contextual menu items; for some reason, the existence of items in both folders would break open finder window focus when switching to finder, after any contextual menu item was invoked--even if it's a standard OS X one, like "get info"!
this has been annoying the crap out of me the last few days. amazing what revelations we have in the shower.

  • How to change Default Finder Windows Size?

    Hi all:
New Finder windows show Macintosh HD and there is no problem in keeping the size or view options every time I open a new window (command + N).
I can change "New Finder windows show" to another folder and works just as well.
But when I open a folder in a new window (double click on an icon folder) the size of the window is very small and different from the window displayed by using command + N.
Finder saves and applies default view options to all windows without a problem, but not the default size or in other words:
default windows size is different from new finder windows size.
In Snow Leopard I could change default size of all windows holding down the Shift key while dragging and changing the size but in Mountain Lion it does not work.
I have also deleted all files .DS_Store but neither works.
I searched a lot but can not find a solution to this problem.
    Thanks.

As far as New Finder Windows (command+N) are concerned, there's no problem.
All other folder's Finder Windows I have not modified manually are displayed with the default size shown in the attached image. That is the window size that I want to modify.
    Thanks.

  • Finder window doesn't see new music in iTunes

Now when I add new albums to iTunes, the Finder window simply does not see them; they do not appear in any of the lists under 'Music', 'iTunes' etc; they are invisible. Which is really annoying because it means I have no way of copying the music onto my tablet or my phone, as I  can only copy things to my other devices using Android File Transfer.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why the Finder is no longer able to see music added to iTunes?
    <Edited by Host>

Where they end up will depend on your settings under iTunes > Preferences > Advanced.
You can select any track in iTunes, option-click on it and then click Show in Finder to see where it is.

  • How to make default settings for a new Finder window ?

Will, i am abit ashamed to ask this question cause it's problaby very basic OSX knowledge.
    However, since using 10.0 , i never have find a solution ..
    What i want is this:
EVERY new Finder window i open, be it with the keycommand (CMD)+N, or double clicking a Folder a disk icon, has to be shown to me in only 1 way
    which i have setup beforehand.
I am talking bout: List view only, with specified columns ("date added" for example etc) in a vast specific order.
For these settings, i open one finder window, setup the "view options" for that window, re-arrange the columns, then do: save as default"
Now, i would say that next time i open a new finder window, (keycommand (CMD)+N, or double clicking a Folder a disk icon), it defaults to the settings i made above.
    But nada.
OSX has always intuitive for me but this issue scratches my brains.
    Can someone please help ??

Hi Kappy, you are a Hero !
Especially this, which i really didn't know: (quote) : "Note that the configuration will only stick whenever the Finder window is opened on the same directory where it was created"
    Very, very helpful !
Even the order of the columns is retained
However, i wish the (CMD)+J settings would apply for ANY Finder window you open, not just ones that are in the same directory.
    Cheers and thx again !!

  • OS 10.9 Finder sidebar suddenly does not displaying proper contents

OS 10.9 Finder sidebar suddenly does not display most items; only shows couple items I don't even want there.  Can change what shows in first finder window but sidebar not responding to "Preference" changes.  Screen shot is what it shows now. I downloaded a Yahoo widget and their widget player app today, could that cause this?

I did force quite finder--> no effect.
Finder uaed to list in "sidebar" each of the main folders in HD i.e Documents, Pictues, Downloads, Movies, Applications...(I get same window contents open if click on HD icon  as when clikc on Finder). Now none of that.
Just now went back into preferences and unchecked everything in sidebar section. If I check for it to just show HD then everuything does show up but several windows to the right and HD icon is all that shows in sidebar but only if I first then click on (in order across the open windows: Users then geoffreylevens1 (system name).
If recheck items they do NOT show up in sidebar.  See attached

  • Finder window keeps popping out when booting up the computer

Lately I've noticed whenever I shut down the computer with the "Reopen windows when logging back in" uncheck, this Finder window will pop out the next time I startup the computer. Still new to Apple and am not sure any settings that I may have set before this.
I just want a clear desktop when I boot up the computer and not greeted by this system Finder window.

Finder does not obey the rules of the 'Reopen windows' dialogue box. It will reopen any Finder window that was not closed when you shutdown. This was also true in Snow Leopard and isn't part of the 'Resume' feature itself.
The only way to not see that window when you restart is to close it before you shutdown!
