Finder Window vs. File Dialog Date Sort Reversal

After switching to 10.4 I noticed that all of a sudden the file dialog's sort by date icon convention was reversed (and reversed from that found in the Finder).
What I mean is, the little triangle that determines whether you are sorting in ascending or descending order is upside down with respect to its function, but only in file dialogs.
Convention dictates that when sorting by date, showing the triangle with the point facing down puts the newest items on top. I am not sure if that is descending or ascending. I never could sort out that language. Anyhow, the Finder obeys this convention, but my file dialogs do not. Here are two images that illustrate the problem:
Finder (correct):
File Dialog (incorrect):
Anyone know what's wrong here?
PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphics)   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Sonnet 1.25GHz processor upgrade card

Interesting. Looks like it's a bug specific to Navigation Services, which Carbon applications like FireFox use for Open and Save panels.
While they are made to look and function as similar as possible, the Finder, NavigationServices, and NSOpenPanel/NSSavePanel are all different things. As I mentioned, Navigation Services is what Carbon applications use, while Cocoa applications use NSOpenPanel and NSSavePanel. The apps that Michael tested are Cocoa apps which don't appear to have the problem.
I'll file a bug on it when I get a chance.

  • Windows native file dialog default sort is by date instead of name

I somehow managed to get the Windows common file dialog default sort to be by date instead of name, so I have to resort by name every time I select a VI to load. I haven't been able to identify the registry entry that tell how the MRU list is sorted. How do I make the default sort by name instead of date, short of removing and reinstalling LabVIEW?

I think its a Windows issue and nothing to do with LabVIEW since LabVIEW just calls the MS common dialog. Do you see the same behaviour when using Windows Explorer? I know that with Win2K, I can set the default folder view to always sort by date. To go back to the default, select My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View>Reset All Folders. I don't have easy access to any computers with a different OS right now so I can't describe what the process is for them.

I can´t find windows support files for boot camp

    Boot Camp Assistant
If you can't download, go to Network control panel and check your settings there, look to see if there is more than one interface listed. And turn off "Auto-proxy setting" and see if that helps, it does in half the cases.
The only thing really needed would be a small Apple Software Update for Windows program to pull the drivers down while running Windows. Just that one program, which could update itself as happen with 2.0 and 2.1 version.
As it is, downloads can take 8 hrs for a tiny 620MB package. Strange. True. Been like this.

  • How to open the windows open file dialog in forms60

    Hello to all
Please help have a form with a browse button.I need to open the windows open file dialog so the end user can search for a file. Can it be done with OLE or DDE package?
Any sample code is much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

The options you are considering suggest that you are running client-server ( it really would help if people told us ),
If that is the case you can use the GET_FILE_NAME built in.
Bear in mind that oracle consider client server obsolete and this will not work the same on the web, although you can use webutil in later versions.
I hope forms product management notice what a high proportion of questions on this forum are about forms 6.

  • .prefpane files not working. opens finder window instead of time/date

I just recently acquired a quick silver g4 with 10.2 OS X... after running much needed updates, My computer had lost file associations. For instance, I tried to put in a key for quicktime but when i clicked on preferences a finder window popped up instead of what i needed... then when i wanted to adjust my clock the same thing happened. Also there is a red circle that looks like an error when i look at the thumbnail icon for my desktop when im in the finder window. Is this an easy fix? PLEASE HELP!

Also have this problem.    We also used to point our java app shortcuts to the system32 or syswow64, but with Java 8 this is no longer an option.  Updating shortcuts every time there is a new java version is unrealistic.  Similar to Jeff, the symlinks in the ProgramData folder don't seem to work.

  • Finder in Save file dialog Safari crash

Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard at launch, Safari 4 doesn't seem to like me searching in the save file dialog box. It doesn't seem to matter whether or not I actually save the file, and I made a screen recording to show what happens here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFKkPI2vGr8
I've reset Safari, and I repaired my disk permissions after loading up Snow Leopard. What gives? This is really annoying when I want to get to a folder fast, and dragging and dropping image files to folders seems to cause them to open in different Preview windows (or not even open at all).
Any help would be much appreciated. This is seriously making me consider going back to Firefox or just going with Chrome - this crash doesn't happen with either of them!

The problems are caused by third party input managers/enhancers that have not yet been updated by their developers to comply with the standards used by Safari 3.2.1. and/or Safari 4.
    In your case these are:
    com.zang.RegexKit 0.6.0 (0.6.0) <71374A4A-3B24-4759-E994-AB9E135345CB> /Library/InputManagers/Safari AdBlock/Safari AdBlock Loader.bundle/Contents/PlugIns/Safari AdBlock.bundle/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/RegexKit.framework/Versions/A/Regex Kit
You fill find them in one or either of these folders:
    Home/Library/Input Managers
    Hard Disk/library/Input Managers
    Hard Disk/Library/Application Support
although the exact location is indicated in your crash report as quoted above - look under 'Binary Images'.
Close Safari and delete them, then restart Safari and it should be working normally. Alternatively drag them to the desktop and restart Safari. then add them back one at a time, restarting Safari every time, until you find the one (or more) causing the crash.
Check with the developers of the plug-ins in question for updates that are Safari 4 compliant.

  • RW2 preview in finder and "Open file" dialog

    Hello,
I run into a curiosity with RW2 file format (from LX3 and FZ38). In Finder, RW2 preview is not displayed and only default icon (black icon with text exec in corner). The same RW2 files does have correct preview, when I browse them in "Open file" dialog window (for example Safari > File > Open File...).
How it is possible the Finder and Open dialog do have different settings? Is it possible to copy these settings?

  • List Folder does not find WIndows shortcut files

    Hello,
Why doesn't the "List Folder" vi find the Windows shorcut files? The WIndows short files have a extension of "*.lnk",  I am using Labview 2011 SP1 on a WIndows XP Pro machine, the shorcut files are on a mapped network drive.  I can find the shortcut files if a open a cmd window and use the dir command.

It seems to work for me as well.  As Mike said, the shortcuts to folders showed up in the folders list.
    Here are some other thoughts:
Are you using the pattern filter at all?
Are you using the Recursive File List?

  • My finder window is not refreshing after a file is deleted

I open up a new finder window so that I can sort through and delete items from the desktop. After I delete a file, the images displayed in the top of the window no longer match the items that are left.

Might be Finder preferences are corrupted ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash
See if that made a difference.

  • Detect what file or folder was selected in Windows File Dialog

Hi, We have an Vibration Crontroller application that has is no DLL and no ActiveX support. I want to detect when that or any Windows application opnes a Windows "Open File Dialog" box. I'd then like to detect what file or folder was selected. Is that possible with LabVIEW? Thanks.

That routine decodes the binary data from registry to file path.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/windows/desktop/bb762194(v=vs.85).aspx
Basically, the first byte of MRUListEx listing in registry is the index of last accessed file in the file list in the sub key. If you open up your registry and navigate to the key, you will figure it out.
Also you can drag and drop snippets on to your block diagram, if that doesnt work, save the png file to your computer and then drag and drop.

  • How to create a custom file dialog box/vi (win)??

    Hello,
I'd like to create a custom file dialog box to handle the reading of my tdms files. Basicly I want to extend the existing file select dialog box with a graphical preview of the data in the selected file. I know I can create all the logic for file selection by hand and use a list box to display the filelist, but I would rather prefer to somehow use the existing windows controls. So is it possible to get the windows file selector on the front panel of a vi and react to the user selection? If so, is there any example available on how to do this? Any other options? I'm using labview 8.2
    thanks for your input!
    klaus

    Klaus,
I wouldn't know that Microsoft provides access to the controls that Explorer and file dialog consist of.
There might be a different and more powerful solution though. The
WINDOWS Explorer / file dialog have a plugin API that allows you to
associate your own application for thumbnail creation with a particular
file extension. That way, TDMS thumbnails will show in any instance of
    Explorer and
File Dialog without you having to make your own dialog. Basically, you
would need to compile the VI that creates the thumbnail into a
LabVIEW-built DLL and then wrap this DLL with some C++ boilerplate code
that Microsoft provides. You might want to have a look at the bottom of
this article to get an idea of how the whole thing works:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/0600/w2kui2/default.aspx.
    Hope that helps,
    Herbert

  • IPhoto file creation date inconsistencies during drag and drop

I have noticed that if I drag and drop a photo from iPhoto to Finder, the file creation dates in Finder are inconsistent.
(This question is related to drag and drop only and not File->Export, which always uses the export date and timestamp for the file creation date and thus does not suit my needs).
TEST A -- If the EXIF DateTimeOriginated is 01/01/2013, and today's date is 03/03/2013, then:
In some cases when I drag a file to Finder, the EXIF date is used as the file modification/creation date in Finder
In some cases, today's date is used as the file modification/creation date in Finder
In some cases, a date in between the EXIF date and today's date is used
It appears that for case A1, these are files that do not have a modified copy.  That is, if you select the photo in iPhoto and then click "File" -> "Reveal In Finder", the "Modified File" choice will be greyed out.
For cases A2 & A3, iPhoto has inexplicably decided to create modified versions of these files either today or sometime in the past.
TEST B -- I have read that unexplained modifications are tied to the auto-rotate function in cameras, and it does seem to be the case when I performed the test below:
Select a large group of landscape format photos (these would not have been auto-rotated), then drag and drop to Finder.  The file creation dates are set to the EXIF date
Add some portrait photos to the group in (1).  Now the file creation date of ALL photos including the non auto-rotated photos are set to the current date
The behaviour in B2 is clearly wrong, since the landscape photos should be the same as in B1.  This is bug #1.
Furthermore, iPhoto appears to be inconsistent with when these modifications are made.  For example, I dragged & dropped an auto-rotated photo on 02/02/2013, then dragged & dropped it again today, then the file creation date in Finder (and also the date of the modified file in iPhoto, as shown in iPhoto File->Reveal In Finder->Modified File) can either the EXIF date (01/01/2013), the late of the last drag & drop (02/02/2013), or today's date (03/03/2013); there does not appear to be any rhyme or reason to this.  This is bug #2.
In any case, saying "you should never use drag & drop in iPhoto" (as I have read in some other forum posts) isn't a solution, because Apple should either (a) support this function correctly or (b) remove it altogether.  Furthermore, I regularly burn photos to disk for others so having the file date and timestamps correctly set to the EXIF date helps keeping the photos sorted in the directory listings for multiple OS, so File->Export isn't a solution.

File data is file data. Exif is photo data. A file is not a photo.  It's a container for a photo.
When you export you're not exporting a file. You're exporting a Photo. The medium of export is a new file. That file is created at the time of export, so that's its creation date. The Photo within that file is dated by the Exif.
There are apps that will modify the file date to match the Exif.
The variation you're seeing is likely due to the changes in how the iPhoto library works over the past few versions. Drag and drop is handy, but is not a substitute for exporting, nor intended to be.

  • Sharepoint will mount, but its finder window won't open.

First of all, we'll be fully switched over to Intel Macs in about three weeks, but I was wondering if anyone else has ever seen this problem:
We have a Mac OS X Server running version 10.4.11. We have a G5 running 10.4.11.
We have a hard drive on the X Server available as a share point to administrators. On the same hard drive are multiple share ponts available to various users. On this particular G5, when we mount a specific share point (we'll call it USER FILES), it shows up on the desktop, but it's Finder window will not open (it sort of looks like it tries to open but it doesn't).
On the same G5, when the encompassing hard drive share point (we'll call it OFFICE FILES) is mounted, we are able to open it and then open USER FILES on it with no problems. Of course, we can't allow this user to have an admin access to OFFICE FILES, so she can't access USER FILES this way.
As a test, using my admin access, also can not open USER FILES on this G5. Other share points on the same X Server drive (i.e. ACCOUNTING FILES) can be accessed directly and normally. It's only the USER FILES share point that is having the problem.
There are no access problems to USER FILES via any other machines on the network, be they other G5, Snow Leopard or Lion OS X systems.
The next step, was to restart the problem G5 using an external boot drive, and, following the same procdures outlined above, found the same problem exists. Based on that, I've pretty much ruled out the system software as the culprit.
Next was to zap the PRAM. Still no luck. Restarting in safe mode also produced no positive result.
Funny thing is, the drive is mounting on the Desktop and is accessible via the hierarchical filing system, for instance, we are able to open Microsft Word documents on USER FILES via the File Menu Open command. So all is not lost -- we've got a work around. It's just that it would be nice to fix the problem (I don't even care what's causing it , if I can just fix it).
    Any suggestions?

Yes, the user does have R&W privelages.
Here's some new info: The problem has now cropped up on two additional users machines.
Additional steps that have been taken: We've taken the server off line and run Disk Utiity's Repair Disk and Repair Permissions on the server startup and the hard drive in question. This produced no change in the results.
Eureka! How's this for odd? The problem only seems to occur if the finder window is set to view in the icon mode. When it's opened in list or column view it seems to open up fine.
I suppose we can let it go with this work around, but my gut says there may be some underlying problem.

The Get Information window shows the same dates as the normal Finder window.
File types are mostly DOC with some JPG and PDF and one TIFF.
All were created by me over the course of time on a succession of Macs (except for that 12/31/69 PDF, which was downloaded from Garmin) and then migrated.
Those I've checked have a Last Opened date that's the same as the Date Modified date.
These documents are all in my Documents folder, in two subfolders, with some of them further down a hierarchy of subfolders.
I first noticed this a few weeks ago.
The number of these 2/5/40 documents seems to be increasing.
    Does anyone know:
    What could cause this phenomenon?
    How can I stop it?
It's not a big problem per se, but is it likely to cause other problems?
Is there a way to correct the Created Date?
    Thanks for any help!

Then I may only guess that perhaps the date was off at some point in time that coincided with when those files were created or the application that created them has a bug in it.
Oh, at this point in time are all new files dated incorrectly? If so then there could be a corrupted part of the PRAM. You might try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
