Finder window won't open on the desktop when rebooting in Lion

One problem that I have is: I always have a finder window open on my desktop. In Lion 10.7.1, when I shut down and restart my Macbook Pro (15 inch early 2008), the finder window will appear momentarily then close itself, leaving empty desktop and drive icons on it.
I have to click Finder icon on the dock to open finder window, and it never remember it's last location on the desktop and settings I applied to it in Preference.
This is annoying. I have tried and search many solutions but none of them are permanent. They are:
1. Delete com.apple.finder.plist in user/library/preferences, then force restart finder, set it the way I want in Preference. Then restart the Mac. Finder windows will open at boot in some case, and not working in many cases. And if it work, the solution is not permanent. The probelm will come back again in 3-4 days time
2. Right click on the finder in the dock then options assign to this window. This won't work for me
3. go to: System Preferences>Mission Control> and UNcheck "Automatically rearrarange spaces based on most recent use".  This was the only change I made, did a reboot, and finder window is now visible and usable. This won't work for me either
I think this is a bug in Lion, and would like experts here to advise a permanent solution for me Thank in advance

  • Sharepoint will mount, but its finder window won't open.

First of all, we'll be fully switched over to Intel Macs in about three weeks, but I was wondering if anyone else has ever seen this problem:
We have a Mac OS X Server running version 10.4.11. We have a G5 running 10.4.11.
We have a hard drive on the X Server available as a share point to administrators. On the same hard drive are multiple share ponts available to various users. On this particular G5, when we mount a specific share point (we'll call it USER FILES), it shows up on the desktop, but it's Finder window will not open (it sort of looks like it tries to open but it doesn't).
On the same G5, when the encompassing hard drive share point (we'll call it OFFICE FILES) is mounted, we are able to open it and then open USER FILES on it with no problems. Of course, we can't allow this user to have an admin access to OFFICE FILES, so she can't access USER FILES this way.
As a test, using my admin access, also can not open USER FILES on this G5. Other share points on the same X Server drive (i.e. ACCOUNTING FILES) can be accessed directly and normally. It's only the USER FILES share point that is having the problem.
There are no access problems to USER FILES via any other machines on the network, be they other G5, Snow Leopard or Lion OS X systems.
The next step, was to restart the problem G5 using an external boot drive, and, following the same procdures outlined above, found the same problem exists. Based on that, I've pretty much ruled out the system software as the culprit.
Next was to zap the PRAM. Still no luck. Restarting in safe mode also produced no positive result.
Funny thing is, the drive is mounting on the Desktop and is accessible via the hierarchical filing system, for instance, we are able to open Microsft Word documents on USER FILES via the File Menu Open command. So all is not lost -- we've got a work around. It's just that it would be nice to fix the problem (I don't even care what's causing it , if I can just fix it).
    Any suggestions?

Yes, the user does have R&W privelages.
Here's some new info: The problem has now cropped up on two additional users machines.
Additional steps that have been taken: We've taken the server off line and run Disk Utiity's Repair Disk and Repair Permissions on the server startup and the hard drive in question. This produced no change in the results.
Eureka! How's this for odd? The problem only seems to occur if the finder window is set to view in the icon mode. When it's opened in list or column view it seems to open up fine.
I suppose we can let it go with this work around, but my gut says there may be some underlying problem.

  • Why won't new version 4.0 open on my desktop while version3.6.17 works fine. When I check the processes running on the computer the firefox is running but it won't open on the desktop(monitor)

When I updated firefox from version 3.6.16 to 4.0 the program would not open on the desktop after I double-clicked the short cut on the desk top. I checked the processes running on the computer and it showed firefox running. I followed the short cut to its file and clicked on the executable file with the same result(it won't open). I went back to the previous version and it works fine. What could be the problem?

    Hey djclark24,
Have you tried starting Firefox in Safe Mode? Hold down "shift" while Firefox is starting up. If the crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode, you should read [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
There is also a lot of useful stuff in the [[Firefox crashes]] Knowledge Base article.
You could also try [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles?s=create+a+new+profile&r=2&e=es&as=s#w_creating-a-profile Creating a new profile].
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Finder Window won't open since 10.6.6 update

I recently did a software update on my Macbook Pro to get the App Store. It worked great for a day. Now my time & date, and battery life icons will not show up on the top right of the screen. Also I cannot open any Finder windows. I can still open applications with no problems as long as they are in the dock or a program that I used recently. Also the Software Update screen shuts down before it can detect any new updates. Ditto with any utilities that I try through System Preferences. I did a Virus Scan immediately after the Software Update with Virus Barrier and detected no problems. What's going on? I don't want to do a system wipe but I will if I have to.

If you try to try to create a new Finder window what exactly happens or doesn't happen? Do you get any errors or what? Do you have the Finder menu items along the top of the screen? Should say "Finder File Edit View Go Help".
If the "New Finder Window" doesn't work from the "File" menu, can you use the "Go" menu and click on "Utilities".
If you don't have the Finder menu, it has probably crashed. The easiest way to start it is to do an press the "Option" key and right-click on the Finder icon in the Dock (or Control-Option if you can't do a right-click) and then select the "Relaunch" item.
If you can't do any of this probably the next thing to try is restart the system - do this by clicking on the Apple in the top left corner and then click on the "Restart" item - make sure to exit out of all the running apps before doing this and saving any changed files if you need to.
    Good luck ...

  • My itunes won't open on the desktop anymore

    Hi
    I have a problem!!!
I was loading some songs onto itunes from the itunes store and had paid for each song using a giftcard. All was going well until I came to the last song I had chosen to load and for some reason it was stuck and never finished (or starting by the look of the bar!!) downloading.
So I minimised the icon and continued on with other work only to discover later when I tried to shut down my computer that itunes was still downloading so in frustration I cancelled that song just in order to shut down. Going back onto the desktop later on I discovered that I could not get onto itunes anymore via the desktop. As I don't know any other way I tried to troubleshoot but didn't get anywhere. Please help. Maybe just switching off and on computer may help???
    Wishful thinking.

    Hi Kori,
Close all apps: Double click on the Home button, then swipe up on the mini screens displayed above each open app.
Reset your device (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Silver Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Home screen redisplays, see if your iTunes will open.
    Cheers,

  • Firefox won't open from the desktop shortcut nor the program file on the start page.

On many occasions, Firefox will not start (load) unless I reboot my laptop. Version 3.6 on Windows Vista.

Actually, it's not just Mail that isn't working, but the Finder is crashing as well, and there may also be other problems that I don't fully understand. If you can manage to use the computer at all, proceed as follows.
Verify/repair your disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the latest system update using the Combo installer:
Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update for PPC
Read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the boot volume before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.

  • Does anyone know why my documents won't open on the desktop

Neither JPG/Word/folders nor the MacintoshHD will open when either single or double clicked? Any ideas why this could be?

I would to a Restore.  Select the iPod in iTunes.  Go to the Summary tab for the iPod.  There is a button there to do a Restore.  This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.  After Restore complete, try playing songs on the iPod again.
If THAT does not fix the problem, and it's not bad headphones (since you also tried the "speaker"), there is probably a hardware problem on the iPod.  All 7th gen nanos are still under warranty.  If you have an Apple Store nearby, you should take it to the store's Genius Bar.  To minimize waiting, you can make a reservation on store's web page.

  • Finder window will not open

Finder window will not open from the dock unless I right click and click "New Finder Window".  Currently running Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D87p) public beta (iMac - 27" late 2013).
    Tried the following fixes:
    1.  Deleted finder.plist and restart.
    2.  Force quit Finder - when I do this, I get the "Finder not responding" and have to restart computer and right click for "New Finder Window".
    3.  Perform "disk permission repair".

Well I'm glad that I"m not the only one with the issue. I'm also running Yosemite 10.10.3. About 2 days ago Finder stopped responding. I have reported it via "Feedback Assistant".
I did create a new profile and it does open with a new profile. Which is kinda strange. I have also done items 1-3 listed in the original post.
I will keep an eye on this post to see if anyone solves the issue at hand.

  • PDF Files on desktop won;t open all the way. 11.07 won't download with Maverick 11.06

I have Maverick 11.0.6.  It quit downloading 11.07 half way through.  Also, some PDF files on my desktop won;t open all the way.  Still show the logo. What is going on?

The Installer that you had downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5786 is the 11.0.07 patch update for Reader XI. It shows the dialog "choose the copy of Adobe Reader to update" under following scenarios:
    1. When it finds more than one copy of Adobe Reader installed on a system. In this case, You need to choose the application that you use, like browse to Applications directory and choose Adobe Reader if that is the location from where you use the application.
    2. When the installer didn't find any copy of Adobe Reader installed on a system which it needs to update. In this case, you may install Adobe Reader XI version 11.0.07 directly from here get.adobe.com/reader/ from the same machine you intend to use it on.
Please let us know if any of the above suggestion resolved your problem.

Sort of. As part of the next update we'll make Muse ignore the 125% scale setting. This will make it easier for you to use that setting with all your other applications, but even when your Display is set to scale 125% the Muse UI will be presented at 100%. Unfortunately the current transition architecture of Muse (part native 64-bit app and part Adobe AIR app internally) combined with how Windows 8 and 8.1 achieve 125% scaling means it will be quite some time before Muse will be able to correctly support 125% Display scaling. Sorry for the inconvenience.
