Finder won't color label files

I am working through a directory of files and color labeling them using finder. Some files won't take the color labels. It has nothing to do with the file format or any other permissions conflicts.

there must be some difference.  which files are they?

  • Finder: Tags that colors the file as in Mountain Lion

So Mavericks has this cool tags future. But when they made it, they removed the coloring of the file. They only put a dot behind the file. I used the color tags to navigate in the folders faster. Color coding.
Is there a way to turn this on again?

I left the following feedback for Apple.  I would also love an App Developer to make this feature!
In general, I think Tags are a great upgrade to Labels - we just mostly want to be able to quickly see the color coding faster/more easily.
Many forum users have found that visually locating tagged items to be more difficult in 10.9 versus previous OS versions (in which "Labels" colored the entire row/filename).
One way to mitigate this difficulty for Finder's List view would be to put the Tags Icon (the colored dots) into their own Column, such that a user can place the Tags Icon column wherever they would like.
For example, I personally would put Tags Dots at the start of the filename (left-most column in a window) for the most rapid identification.
An additional feature to make identification easier would be if this column could be stretched horizontally, so the Dots become Ovals - wider, and thus even easier to visually locate.  This would allow each user to customize the amount of visual cue the Tags create.

  • Color labels in finder

Maverick OS doesn't seem to have the option to color label files v.s. color tag. Is there a way to bring that back?

Here is a follow-up. Same answer — no. However, if you set a color tag on Mavericks, that color information is stored within the file object (document, package, folder). When that file object is accessed on Mountain Lion, Lion, and Snow Leopard (10.8.n, 10.7.n, or 10.6.n) operating systems, it is automatically presented as a traditional colored label style. When labeled file objects from earlier OS X releases are placed on Mavericks, there is automatic style conversion to tags with original color preservation.
On Mavericks, placing a tagged file object on iCloud preserves the Mavericks tag style. If one is on Mountain Lion, this tag information is not shown when viewed on iCloud. If you drag this tagged file object from iCloud onto the Mountain Lion desktop, it will undergo automatic label style conversion and appear with original color preserved. The reverse is true.
If you log into iCloud and launch Pages for iCloud, no tag/label information is shown (or can be set) for any document. If you open Pages (in my case, v4.3 on Mavericks) to iCloud, then the iCloud panel will show documents with tags.
So, the bottom-line is that Apple changed the label presentation style (and organization) in Mavericks. The presentation style and color are backwards compatible to older versions of OS X.

  • OSX Color Labels -- Visual Implementation

What do people think of how Color Labels are implemented in OSX -- coloring the file name and the whole area around it?
I'm finding this a bit too noticeable/distracting (in contrast to OS9 where sometimes you couldn't see the colors at all on a custom icon).
I'm thinking maybe a colored stroke around the icon would be better (though that might be awkward if icons can have transparent edges?).
Or maybe the filename could have just a thin outline around it (like the current look when you highlight a Color Labeled file, but even thinner) -- and then when you select the file, the whole name turns that color as the highlight.
And yes I would like to be able to edit the color shades too.
And I'll be horrified if, as I read in another post, color labels can get forgotten by OSX. Hope that gets fixed soon as sometimes I use color labels for really important meanings. OSX better not forget the way I position file icons inside a folder as well (one of things that make Windows so gross IMO) or I'm ruined. Which images go with that blue HTML file? Why the blue ones aligned nicely below it in the folder of course.

Have just noticed activity monitor is indicating very unusual activity in something called "TruBlueEnvironment", whatever that is. It is currently accounting for over 95% of CPU activity, and these spikes may be the cause of the beachballs appearing at rather odd times.
For anyone who knows what this may be all about, here are some current stats from the Activity Monitor:

Can anyone give me some guidance on all of this?

my labeled files on my macbook pro won't stay colored

Ok, in theory you cannot lock the hard drive, so, run Disk Utlities, First Aid, Repair Hard Drive again.  It should come back with a message that all is OK.  Then run Repair Permissions.  That often returns a lot of messages that are not actually problems, just grumbling by the system.
Then try a normal restart by clicking the apple left side of the menu bar, Restart.  If you restart normally all is fine.
If not, then restart on the recovery HD again and try an Install Mac OS X and see if that succeeds this time.

  • Can Bridge not read / see the Finder's color labels...?

I have got a whole stack of images files, in a few nested folders on my Mac, and they have all been painstakingly individually color-labelled in the Finder with various colors.
I now want to manage these files and perform various actions on them, based on their colors, and so I have opened up the folders in Bridge, but Bridge is not showing the colors of the files.
I know Bridge has its own color-labels set-up, but this does not work in conjunction with the Finder, so even if I went through and re-labelled them all in Bridge, the changes would not be reflected in the Finder -- and I do still need to view the color-labels outside of Bridge / in the Finder, because I won't ONLY be using these files from within Bridge.
So, simply put, is there no way I can get Bridge to read and display the color-label information as shown in the Finder?

So, simply put, is there no way I can get Bridge to read and display the
color-label information as shown in the Finder?
No, you can't see those finder labels in Bridge.
There is however a reasonable simply workaround I would think.
In Finder create several new folders, for each label one folder.
Open another Finder window and put this in column mode. Use view options in
Finder and add the column 'label' to the window. Now press on the name label
at top of this column and your labels are selected per color above each
    other.
Drag and drop them manual to the new created folders. And you can easily
repeat this for the other nested folders.
You can also add the new color label folders temporally to the favorite
column left at the finder window so drag and drop is even more easier.
After this in Bridge point to each folder and assign a suitable bridge label
color to it. Now you can work with Bridge color labels
Also in Bridge you have options to rate with stars and add keywords so
filtering has dozens of ways to retrieve your grouped files at once using
    the filter panel.

  • Can not color label more than one file at a time

    Hi,
I've had this problem since 10.6.6-ish, i can not color label more than one file at a time in the Finder.
Wether i select two, twenty or twohundred only one file gets color labeled.
It doesn't seem to matter if i assign a color label through the File menu or right click > label.
Figured a re-install might fix this but it hasn't (even a clean install without restoring any kind of backup).
Does anyone else have this issue and/or a fix for it?
    Thanks,
    Jay

  • How do I find images in LR 2.4 (imported from CS4 Bridge) that have color labels already assigned In CS4 Bridge? I have set both Bridge and LR color labels text to match (eg Green for green, etc).

How do you find images in LR 2.4 that have been imported from CS4 Bridge and have been assigned a color label in Bridge?  I have set both LR 2.4 and my CS4 Bridge to match the text for each color to be the same (eg. Green for green, etc), and the filter search in LR 2.4 shows that a label has been assigned, but I am unable to identify and locate the specific images in LR 2.4 that have had a color label assigned from CS4 Bridge.  I have tried to search via attribute, metadata, text, etc...Is it necessary to re-assign color labels all over again, image by image, in LR 2.4, or is there a way to automatically have the color labels assigned in CS4 Bridge be assigned and searchable to the images after they have been imported into the LR 2.4 catalogue from the Bridge program?

    JohnM.
I closed both programs and re-imported photos and re-tried the action of having LR  read the XMP metadata from the CS4 files, and it seems to work now just fine...don't know why now and not before, but thanks much. Is there a way to have LR do this automatically upon import of images from CS4?  I tried to do this with an import metadata preset, but no luck.  It seems as if I can only do this once the images have already been imported into LR, and then to have to have LR read the metadata from the CS4 Bridge files.  thanks gain.

  • Finder does not show all colors from selected color Labels

Since a view days finder does not show all Color Label colors. When I select either yellow or green it is selected, but it does not show in the file list with details, I can see it in icon and 3 pane view, but not in the detail list view.
does anybody know why or how? Or what plist files I might need to delete to get this reset?

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your labels work in that User acct in list view? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • How to implement Mac OSX Finder color labels

Is it possible to support color labels for files and folders in Mac OSX Finder in a custom connector? It would be nice to implement this in our connector as it's a common way for users to do some lightweight status workflow.
If it's possible, a code sample would be really helpful.

  • What Unix command is used to assert a file or folder's color label assignment?

I'm doing some scripting to automate processes on my XSan.  One of the functions I find I'm doing over and over frequently is changing file ownership, permissions, changing the color of the parent folder based on the status of the files in it, and then locking the file.  I know the UNIX equivalents for three of the four commands:
    chown-- for the file ownership
    chmod-- for the permissions
    chflags-- for the lock bit
but I've been looking through man pages all day and can't find what command asserts the file or folder's "label" color attribute.  I'd rather do this in command line that in Automator, as it's faster and I have hundreds of folders containing files that I need to lock down.  My boss is considering replacing XSAN with Compellent, and I'm trying to show how easy MacOS is to manage when you can script everything involved in maintaining it.  This will go a long way towards making that case.

  • Finder Color Labels Disappear

At my work, we use the Finder color label feature extensively for collaborative projects in order to mark who has worked on what files on our server. Recently, though, my labels have all disappeared. I'm unable to see the labels I had previously set and I am unable to view the labels others have set as well. My colleagues can see the labels just fine on their computers. I haven't seen a lot of people have this particular issue, but I have seen a fix online where you go into the Terminal and delete the DS_Store files and let OS X rebuild them. Please advise.

I have a similar issue, but unfortunately no fix.  My labels don't disappear immediately though.  They will stick around for days or even weeks, then suddenly vanish.  I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Anyone know of a solution.  I tried the DS_Store thing to no avail

  • Selecting files of same color label in Applescript

I am trying to write a script that will move files to a new folder based on the color label of the files.  So basically I want all files with a Red label to go to one folder, all Orange label files to go to a different folder etc.  I am having a problem figuring out how to select files by their color label.  I want this to be automated and not require any user input.  I have searched forums and even bought a couple books on Applescript but haven't been able to find my answer.
Any information would be very helpful,
    Thanks

However when I move the files to the remote folders, the original file is still in the original folder.
The move command does the same thing as drag and drop
Drag a file and drop it in another partition copy the file, you must press the Command key to move the file.
But there is no command in the AppleScript Finder Dictionary to do this.
First solution : the mv command in a do shell script :
    tell application "Finder"
my moveFiles((files in folder "myfolder" whose label index is 1) as alias list, folder orangeFolder)
my moveFiles((files in folder "myfolder" whose label index is 2) as alias list, folder anotherFolder)
    end tell
    on moveFiles(tFiles, destFolder)
set tDir to quoted form of POSIX path of (destFolder as string)
          repeat with i in tFiles
                do shell script "/bin/mv -n " & (quoted form of POSIX path of i) & " " & tDir
          end repeat
    end moveFiles
-- the -n option after /bin/mv equal  (Do not overwrite an existing file and the original file will not be moved)
-- use -f option to replace an existing file
Second solution : copy, delete and empty the trash
    tell application "Finder"
          with timeout of 0 seconds
set orangeFiles to files in folder "myfolder" whose label index is 1
if orangeFiles is not {} then
duplicate orangeFiles to folder orangeFolder without replacing -- or with replacing
delete orangeFiles -- move files to trash
                      empty the trash
                end if
          end timeout
    end tell

  • AW files labelled in finder, revert to no label

Hi, I use the feature in Finder that enables me to "label" files (e.g. hot, essential, in progress etc), and tags them a certain color. If I do this with AW files, and then I reopen the file, make any changes and save it, the next time I look in the Finder window, the file has reverted to no label, and no color.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Jonathan

This script is applicable in Mac OS X 10.39 and 10.45, but a delay may need to be inserted:
    tell application "AppleWorks 6"
set the_file to file of document 1
    tell application "Finder"
set the_label to label index of the_file
    end tell
    save document 1
    delay 5
    tell application "Finder"
set label index of the_file to the_label
    end tell
    end tell
In previous versions of Mac OS X, the Finder did not display labels, and therefore the script will not run. To change a file's label in 10.28 and older, open the Classic version of Sherlock 2, search for the file, and then change the label from the Search Results window.

  • Close all folders in Mail?  Color Label folders?  Find folder?  And More!

    Hi all.
I have a LOT of mail. They're all very organized, though. Heaps of Mailboxes (Folders) and Sub-folders.
I also have heaps of rules dutifully sending incoming mail to their appropriate mailboxes.
    However...
It has reached a point where one of of the major bottlenecks in my daily workflow is sorting through all these mailboxes.
There are 5 primary mailboxes with perhaps 100-ish subfolders or sub-subfolders. Maybe more.
When they are all open, or a lot of them are open, it is difficult to find the a specific folder when I need it. It would help if I could close all open folder with a shortcut.
    Is this possible?
It would also help if I could visually distinguish each level. Can I color label the mailboxes(not the messages themselves)?
Another help would be if I could run a search for a folder Mailbox name. Is this possible?
Lastly when I create a rule I would love it if there was an option to 'Create new Mailbox' in the rule dialog box rather than having to create the mailbox first. Am I just missing this? See link for illustration:
    http://img.skitch.com/20080820-eaqmy89emw6xm5pcj86iuqu992.jpg

I just had a look and you need to create the mailbox PRIOR to asking the rules to move it into that.
Now, automator lets you create a new workflow, but not sure as to how to set that one up (might be possible; however, my mathematical brain tells what you want to achieve is flawed:
    1) IF new mail equals "tangerine", create new mailbox tangerine, then move message to mailbox "tangerine. (FINE so far!)
    2) the second "tangerine" message arrives, and the workflow should FAIL (because it cannot create a "new" mailbox "tangerine", as there is ALREADY a mailbox named "tangerine")
    3) if automator cannot execute "If" and "and" and the "sort by" all together, then distinguish (a "tangerine" message might actually need to go to "pear" but refers to "pears and tangerines", so it ends up in the wrong mailbox), you may have to start and restart mail, until all stages of the script have been executed.
    You see the problems?
Anyhow, here is a link to some automator info:
