Finder won't display folder size in "Size" column or Info window

Normally, the Finder window will display a folder's size in the Size column. However, I have one folder which shows as "Zero KB" in the Size column. When I open the General Info window, the Size reads as "Zero KB on disk (Zero bytes) for 0 items."
In order to get the folder size I have to go into the folder, select all folders (there's many), then with either the Summary Info or Inspector window, it'll show the folder size ("185.32 GB on disk").
Why is this occurring in only this folder? Is it because it's a large folder or a folder with many subfolders?
I'm running Snow Lep 10.6.2. The folder is on an external drive in FAT32 format. I've already tried deleting the "com.apple.finder.plist" file and rebooting.

go to view menu->show view options and check the box 'calculate all sizes". then click "use as defaults".

Desktop/Finder won't display external hd's, but will in Disk Utility

Yesterday, I replaced the original hard drive on my late 2008 Macbook Pro (OSX 10.9.4, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory) with a 1TB SATA hard drive matching the data transfer speeds of the original hard drive. I backed up via Time Machine (on a 2TB) and even cloned onto a second external hard drive (now called 3TB) and had recovered documents (less than 100GB) from a crashed external hard drive (1TB from OWC brand) onto a third one (now called "1TB portable") with the intent of merging the files from the 1TB OWC crashed hard drive via the 1TB portable back onto an internal hard drive which now had some elbow room. My problem is that after erasing & restoring the new internal hard drive using Disk Utility & Time Machine and reinstalling Mountain Lion and then Mavericks, the 3TB external & 1TB portable external hard drives went missing on my desktop and on Finder, but were still listed in the sidebar in the "Disk Utility". Both external hard drives displayed and were able to be browsed through prior to my Time Machine backup & internal hard drive replacement. Both the 3TB & 1TB portable drives were purchased new and specifically said they were for Mac OS X. All drives are virus-free and are physically working. Fortunately, on the 2008 Mac, the new internal hard drive is working beautifully like a brand-new Mac. Additionally, the 3TB & 1 TB portable are NOT recognizable by other Mac's, but, again, were recognized and operational before I reinstalled OS X ML & Mavericks and restored from Time Machine. Also, I've set my Finder Preferences to be able to see them. Both were Mac formatted. The only additional relevant info I think to add would be that in installing my hard drive, my OSX was Mavericks both before and after and that the Time Machine backup was within within the hour before replacing my hard drive so not much changed there time-wise. Once again, I had verified successful data transfer to the 3TB external & 1TB portable external hard drives immediately before Time Machine backup on the separate third drive. 1) How do I recover the backup data from the 1TB portable drive that I already recovered from the crashed OWC drive and 2) since I was obviously misapplying information from the forums somehow, how should I appropriately clone/transfer data in the first place? I have had a similar problem. I have a 1Tb portable Seagate drive which I have been using successfully for backups with time machine on a Macbook running Lion for 18 months.
I decided to upgrade to Mavericks and experienced the same symptoms as above. The machine would not recognise the disk in finder. Disk utilities could see the disk but the partition was greyed out and several attempts to repair disk were to no avail. I am afraid that I made matters worse by unsuccessfully trying to reformat the disk.
I made a backup of my macbook to another older mac and tried the hard disk with an old Windows laptop running Vista. It recognised the disk but said it need to be formatted. This I did.
In the mean time I had upgraded my Macbook from 10.9.3.to 10.9.4. I am not sure if this made a difference.
I then plugged the hard disk back in to the Macbook. It recognised it immediately and said that it needed initialising. This I did successfully and (MAC os extended Journal). The disk now works perfectly with 10.9.4 on the Macbook and I have been able to use Time Machine with it to make a backup.
I know this does not help with rescuing data from the hard disc but at least I now have a usable hard disk!

Finder won't display files, apps, anything

Upgraded to Yosemite and since then my fan has been running constantly. But, more importantly Finder simply doesn't work, no matter if I reboot or relaunch Finder. The sidebar shows up but when I click on any of the choices nothing is revealed no longer how long I wait.
I can launch apps that are in my dock but nothing that I have to look up. They don't show up in spotlight either. So, I thought of searching for a weird process in Activity Monitor but I can't open the program because it's not in my dock!!
Help!

I have almost the same problem with Finder, except that I only wait a little bit and then everything runs good. I sent a message to Apple telling them about the problem. Maybe in the next update we will repair it.

I know there will probably be a simple fix for this. Just about all the options in the file menu etc. are grayed out. The usual minimise, restore, close buttons diplayed in microsoft windows applications are not displaying. Would anyone be able to help me find out how to access these please?

I'm doing the exact same thing. Iphone 2g won't connect to the itunes store. I get an error message saying the network connection timed out, but all diagnostics are OK. I've turned off antivirus, firewall, check ie settings, uninstalled/reinstalled itunes... nothing has worked. Have you had any luck? And if so, what did you do?

Mail won't display the trash can on the left hand window pane

I have just re-formatted an older Mac Mini using the version of Panther that was bundled with the machine.
Yesterday, Mail was launched, the account was re-created and the user's email came in without a problem.
Today, she noticed that there is no trash can icon in the left hand window pane. Can anyone tell me how to get this icon in plain view or re-install if it's disappeared?
The user tried making a folder called "Trash" but it yielded no results.

Is this an IMAP or POP3 account?
Have her try this...
Right click or Control+click on an eMail she wants in the Trash, go down to Move to... then select Trash which there may be 2 of... see if that creates it.

I can list all authors and NR_OF_BOOKS_PER_AUTHOR using this code:

I can count the numbers of authors (should be displayed in last row column2) using:

and I can list the total amount of books (should be displayed in last row column3) using:

But I come up short with how to display the EMPTY column and the last row containing (column1) the word 'Sum:', (column2) nr of authors, (column3) total sum of all books

Finder Open But Won't Display

Somehow managed to drag my Finder window for a specific folder onto the desktop (probably this crazy sensitive mouse) and now Finder won't display or close it (I can minimize it). I can only access Finder with browse and save commands, not by manually accessing the Finder icon on the dock or in the toolbar. I use Finder a lot but am on a new iMac and don't quite know my way around the updated OS yet.

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

How to display at true actual size (Mac)

The background: InDesign was unable to display work at true actual size until CS6 came along. (So that 1 inch on the screen rulers equals 1 inch on a physical ruler.) Unfortunately, CS6 still doesn't get it right if your display is set to something other than its native resolution. For example, if I set my 27" NEC SpectraView display to "Best for Display" in the Displays system preference panel, then viewing at "Actual Size" in Indesign CS6 achieves true actual size. But that resolution is way too high, making the features of the user interface way too small. The comfortable display resolution is "scaled" to 1920x1080, which provides a nice 2-page layout viewing area (at true actual size) plus a comfortable user interface. However, InDesign CS6 ignores this and continues to draw the "Actual Size" view based on "best for display" resolution, and that results in a greatly shrunken image. Acrobat Pro has gotten this right for several versions now, but it is apparent from this and other CS shortcomings that the different product groups at Adobe aren't very good at what Samsung does and fail to copy each other's work.
The solution to achieving "true actual size" is a script written by Dave Saunders (and probably others) some time ago:

If you're like me and don't really use scripts, here is what to do with it on a Mac (with apologies to Dave and other experts who know a helluva lot more about this than I do):
1. Copy the text for the script and paste it into the blank window that opens when you start ExtendScript Toolkit CS6 (in Applications>Utilities>Adobe Utilities - CS6). Leave it open.
2. Go to Acrobat Pro>Preferences>Page Display and under Resolution note the number associated with "Use system setting". (On my system it is 81 pixels/inch.) I also suggest enabling that setting if it isn't, so that Acrobat also displays at true actual size.
3. Divide the number from Acrobat by 72, then multiply by 100. (This is essentially a percentage calculation of system resolution over the conversion value of 72 points/inch, which produces 112.5 in my example. I round it to 113.)
4. In the open script, change the number to what you got from the above result (113 in my example).
5. Save the script with a name such as "True actual size.jsx" and leave it on the Desktop where you can get it at later for dragging.
6. In InDesign, go to Window>Utilities>Scripts, then right click on User and choose Reveal in Finder. Drag your script into the User folder. (I recommend option-dragging it to leave the original on your Desktop for archiving.)
7. Test the script in an open InDesign document by double clicking on the script. The display should now show your work at true actual size.
8. The scripts window is awkward at best, so the last step is to assign a keyboard shortcut to your script. I use Control-1. Go to Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts… and choose Scripts. Scroll down to the bottom, where you should see your script listed. Highlight it and enter Control-1 (or whatever you prefer) into the New Shortcut window and click Assign. Then click Save. You won't be allowed to modify the Default set, but I was fine with "Default copy".
Now whenever you want to view your work at true actual size, just hit Control-1 (or whatever you chose for a keyboard shortcut).
You might want to copy these instructions into a TextEdit file and put it with your script file in a folder that you can find when the time comes to upgrade to CS7, because I'll lay odds that you're going to need to achieve true actual size all over again.
Lastly and far from least, thank you for the script, Dave! If you or other pros come across this and see corrections or improvements, please set me straight.

Finder ALWAYS has to recalculate Applications file sizes - WHY?

I must be missing something simple here. Every time I open the Applications folder the Finder seems to take 2-3 minutes to re-calculate the file size of every app. I don't usually care because they don't usually change.
Any ideas on how I can stop this?

When in List View, press Command + J to open the Finder's List view preferences, and under Show Columns, deselect Size.
This will remove that column and now will display quicker without having to gather that information.

Satellite A300 PSAG0A - Games Will Not Display in Full Screen Size

I have a large number of games installed on my computer. At least 90% of them will not display in full screen size but display in a small window with a large amount of black screen surrounding the window. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. However, I do not think it has anything to do with Windows as my husband runs the same games on his Toshiba Satellite L300, running exactly the same version of windows, and they all display in full screen size.
Altering the screen resolution makes no difference. And, of course, I do select the full screen option in the games.
Also, sometimes when I have been playing a game and then closed it I find that my desktop picture has shrunk to the smaller size - the same size as the window in which the game was displayed when I was playing it.
The games work fine in every other way, it is only this small screen size which is driving me nuts.
I hope that someone can help me with this!!

Yes, as far as I can tell I have the latest driver. But, even this is confusing to me because....
My graphics media accelerator is Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family. The installed driver version is 7.14.10.1329. The release date for this is 2007-09-13, as far as I can tell from web searches.
However, on the Toshiba website for driver downloads, the available driver version is 8.2.0.1012 PV. The date is 2006-12-28. I have downloaded this driver and attempted to install it. I get the message that it has been installed but, after rebooting and checking the installed driver version is still 7.14.10.1329.
Perhaps, the 8.2.0.1012 PV version does not actually install because it is older than the currently installed version. I would have thought that the driver version with the higher number would be the newer one, but perhaps this is not the case as the dates do not seem to support this theory.
So now I ask myself, firstly, if the driver available for download on the Toshiba website is not the newest one, then why is it there?
Secondly, if it is the newest one then why will it not install on my computer?

Can I change iTunes & iPod display font (not font size) for selected files only?

I loaded a Russian classical music CD into iTunes and iPod. On the original CD, titles, names etc. are written in cyrillic alphabet. Once I loaded the CD into iTunes and on iPod this info was displayed unreadably in western alphabet. Example: "Èæå õåðóâèìû..." (Í. Ãîëîâàíîâ)Õîð È.
I have cyrillic font on my Windows 7 computer. Can I change the display font--for only these selected iTunes music files--to the cyrillic font? Thanks!

Sadly enough you can't chance that, feel free to add a feature request for
that, the more there ask for the bigger chance it will be realized.
It would be great if the colors for the image name (background and font color)
could be changed so the contrast could also be increased so it is also easier
to read.
And this the cheerful part, go to Bridge preferences General tap and play
with the sliders for user interface and Image Backdrop until your satisfied.
BTW using the slider for thumbnail size bottom right of the Bridge window to
increase the thumbs does not increase the font but makes it nevertheless a
little clearer.

DW won't display folders created in Mac Finder

I have a Mac. When I was using CS3, I could use Finder to create a folder, then put an image in that folder. If it didn't display in Dreamweaver, I'd just refresh the view, and it would appear.
I just tried the same thing with CS6, and it doesn't work. I have a folder with an image that I can see in Finder, and I also found it in Bridge, but I can't publish it online because it doesn't appear in Dreamweaver.
So I have two questions:
1. How can I make this folder and image appear in Dreamweaver?
2. In the future, what's the best way to create folders and move move images between folders - with Bridge?
Finder is far easier to do this sort of thing with than Dreamweaver, partly because I can open multiple windows and move files back and forth. But I haven't really worked with Bridge yet, so I'm not sure exactly what its capabilities are.

Yes. All my sites are in a folder called Sites. This particular image is at Sites/GS/images/World/Eco/Animals/Birds/NA/USA/NY.jpg
Just before I posted this response, I discovered that the image is now visible in Dreamweaver. I don't know exactly how; I refreshed the view and switched sites, but I couldn't see it.
I just set up my site in FileZilla and used it to publish the image.
So I don't know if I did something to trigger the image to appear, or if I just have to wait half an hour for it to become visible.

Finder and QTimeplayer won't display flash 8 content

Hi,
Finder's inbuild preview as well as the quicktime player won't display flash 8 swf's
It can only show earlier flash movies.
I have flash 8.022 pro
on mac os 10.4.7
I can however see flash 8 content in all of my browsers.
Is there a component or plugin I should copy to
the quicktime system folders?

I suggest there's no need to shout.
Try linking the Director cast member to the external swf file instead of fully importing it. You also should have the 10.1.1 update in place - this is particularly important.
