Finder won't start

I was trying to change the icon for the Finder, and I think I must have messed something up, because now the Finder all of a sudden quit and won't start back up. The dock still works, and my apps work, at least the ones I can open from the dock.
What do I do to get the Finder back, short of reformatting my computer?
Thanks,
Ian

Nevermind this, I was able to fix it by restarting my computer with the install DVD and repairing permissions.
Thanks anyways.

  • Deleted some (root) files & now finder won't start...now stuck in Classic 9

I have an eMAc 10.2.8 and was re-installing the system X and classic 9.2 software with all security updates etc, when I accidentally wiped some of the quicktime (root) files and extensions.
When it rebooted, Finder would not load - I can see everything on the dock but there is no top menu bar and nothing on the screen. Although some of the software (safari, explorer etc) will open and the top menu shows the normal file, edit etc.
I tried using the MacOSX Install Disc (pressing C while restarting) to reinstall the missing quicktime files, but it simply logs in as normal and doesn't recognise the disk or show anything on the screen. The same thing happens with the eMac Restore Software discs (Mac OS X & Mac OS 9).
I then switched my startup volume via System to Classic 9.2 and restarted the computer. All looked good, but once it has finished loading, there is nothing on the screen but grey lines running vertically down and no dock or top menu bar and the disk eject doesn't work. And again, rebooting with the disks while holding C doesn't seem to work.
Help someone....I can't get back to OSX and I know that everything is still on the HD because I checked it using Disk Utility prior to switching operating systems.
I even tried Firmware (holding the on button for a few minutes) to reboot directly from the OSX disc, but am not entirely sure what to do. Have I completely stuffed it?

I don't know why but your Mac is ignoring the "C" key and insisting on trying to start from the normal, damaged X... One explanation might be any keyboard - including an Apple wireless keyboard - that needs drivers or utilities; then the keyboard wouldn't be read until after the "C" key was too late…
Please rememeber there will never by any Mac that can start in Classic mode. That might not matter when things are going smoothly and in trobules like this, the same confusion that led to that description might be helping to helix the system.
This is still clearly an X, not a Classic problem and you will still get better help more quickly in the X pages, here

I'm not sure what you expected to acomplish trying the eMac Firmware Update via the power button when there's no firmwar eupdate to install. You may have been thinking og resetting Open Firmware, but that's unlikely to help if the System and System Folders are corrupted. The procedures in Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts should help, especially the Archive and Install Feature. Note that you have to hold the 'c' key down until you see the grey background / Apple logo / spinning wheel, and this can take longer than you'd expect; alternately, with the OS X Install disc in the eMac, you can use Startup Manager to select the CD.

  • IBook G4 won't start up, can't find HD

My iBook won't start up. It gets to the grey apple screen and nothing else happens. Sometimes when I try to start up I briefly get the icon with the question mark inside a folder.
I tried reseting the PMU and nothing happened. I instaled the MacOS 10.4 installer CD starting up from the CD, tried disk utility but says it cannot repair disk. As a last resort I figured trying to reinstal OS X but in does not find the hard drive.
I'm kind of desperate. Would love to save some files but I'm also open to any suggestions.
    Thanks in advanced.

    HI Tanya,
Go here for help with the flashing question mark: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440
The flashing question mark indicates that when you boot the iBook it can't find the drive to boot from... Shut down your Mac. While holding down the C key, press the power button, and insert your restore disk all at the same time. Keep holding the C key until you see the Apple logo on the screen. An Installer window will open, select English. From the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. When that window opens, select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart. It can take a minute or two for your Mac to find the startup volume, have patience.
The reason it can't repair the disk is because it couldn't find the start up volume to repair. If you can get it to boot into the hard disk, you can then run Disk Utility from the restore disk and check for any errors and repair them.

  • Itunes won't start up - can't find usr/lib/libstdc++.6.dylib

    Hi,
I had to reinstall the OS 10.3.9 on my ti-book. I did an archive and install, but now iTunes won't start up. Console says it can't find this dynamic library:
    usr/lib/libstdc++.6.dylib
Since I have a lot of my songs in my personal lib on this machine, and podcast susbscriptions, etc - I don't want to lose them if possible.
Is there a way to just install this lib, or will I have to reinstall iTunes altogheter?
I searched for the above file, but can't find it on the disk.
    thx.
    'mark

Do you have any iTunes plugins? You may want to get rid of them and try again.
Also, have you tried removing the corresponding com.apple.itunes.plist files from <youraccount>/Library/Preferences, logging out, logging back in again (or rebooting) and then relaunching iTunes? I don't think an archive and install will refresh this file for you. Nor will reinstalling iTunes.

  • Need urgent help! Mac OS X won't start up. Disk Utility can't find harddisk

I started up my computer today, and instead of booting into Mac OS X, the screen shows a folder with a question mark on it. I can startup my machine using my Panther disks that i've got, but when I go to disk utility, it can't find my hard disk. Looks like the hard disk is not mounting at all.
If i try to install Mac OS X, that also doesn't give me a hard disk to install it on..
I really need help on this because I was supposed to get work done today.
Would diskwarrior sort this problem out?
    Cheers

    Hi, Ken.
Start with the troubleshooting steps outlined in "Mac OS X: Your Mac won't start up."
If you're running Tiger (your profile does not indicate what version of Mac OS X you are using) and you only have the Panther install discs, do not use Disk Utility from the Panther discs on your startup disk. See "Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes."
I recommend you have someone at home send you all the discs you should have with you (Apple Hardware Test, Tiger Install Discs, Software Restore and Install discs, etc.) for your eMac by overnight courier, e.g. FedEx.
When you recover from this problem, it's also time to consider investing in a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution. For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • All of a sudden Photoshop won't start [on a Macbook Air]

    Dear all,
I'm on a MacBook Air with OS X 10.10.2, and I use Photoshop about once a month, but now I really need it, and it won't start:
    - Immediately after I click on the Photoshop icon I get "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 cannot be opened because of a problem." And when I click on the "Report..." button I get a very technical message (see below).
    - I've used Photoshop on this machine for about a year with no problem, but recently I had a problem and needed to restore from my TimeMachine backup.
    - I don't know if the problem occurred immediately after the restore or not.
    - I've read innumerable threads on various forums, but nothing describes my problem exactly. I suspect a problem with my paths and permissions (since I read a report that restoring from a TimeMachine causes such problems occasionally), but I don't know which path is corrupted/missing/unreadable.
    - I've tried creating a new admin account and starting Photoshop from there. It didn't work.
    - I don't mind reinstalling, but I don't have an installer image. I started with Photoshop 6, then updated to CS2, CS4 and eventually CS5. I do have all the serial numbers but not all update-images.
I would appreciate any hints on how to further diagnose and some the problem.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Hi ruidasilva.
It looks like the preferences file has become corrupt. Try this:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the Mail folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this solves the problem).
    5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
    6. You’ll have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    7. You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
    8. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
    9. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • ITunes won't start

I checked support and deleted what they told me to and then restarted my computer. iTunes will open, but when I close it, it won't start again once I try to click on the icons. I tried everything. I restarted my computer three times and re updated the iTunes and nothing will work. I found this out trying to get the iTunes store to work because it didn't download my previous purchases from the store. Every time I restart, iTunes will work, but once you close iTunes, it will not start up again. Even when I deleted iTunes completely and tried redownloading iTunes, it was acting weird. It said that iTunes was still on and asked if I wanted to proceed, even though iTunes was not running. I did not know updating the iTunes would cause my whole iTunes to crash. I'm now hesitant to update my laptop's iTunes. Please help! This is complete BS if Apple makes an update that won't even work!

    hi Nikki!
"The iTunes Music Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
hmmm. first let's try Buegie's trick here:
    Buegie, "iTunes 4.9 and Windows Vista Beta 1" #1, 12:29pm Jul 30, 2005 CDT
... but if that doesn't work for you, let's quickly check up on something. go into your start menu and do a file and folders search for "My Music". how many of those folders do you find?
    love, b

  • Motion Won't Start!!!!!!!

Motion won't start, I've tried reinstalling several times but every time I start it, the icon bounces once and then stops. Here's what my crash reporter says:
    Host Name: Wes-MacBook

Reason: no suitable image found. Did find:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Helium.framework/Versions/A/Helium: mach-o, but wrong architecture
I've tried reinstalling just Helium framework but that doesn't work either. I've also tried copying the helum framwork from a computer whose motion program works but that doesn't work either. Any help would be great.

Doh! - see what happens when you don't read carefully enough?
I've heard it reported, though that while not supported on the MacBook, Motion does run. So that doesn't seem to be the source of your problem. What I would say is you should remove the receipts for Motion in your /Library/Receipts folder before re-installing. You may not be getting a clean install...

  • Firefox won't start after 18.0.1 upgrade

I have upgraded to the latest version and then two days later, The mozilla Crash reporter opens and it won't start. Nothing happens when I press details.
I can't run it safe mode. The same thing happens.
I uninstalled and re-installed and same thing.
I then uninstalled rebooted and re-installed V16. That was then ok for a few days then same thing happened.
So I unintstalled rebooted and on went V15 which worked for about 8 hours. However I can't get any version to work now. The Crash Reporter pops up whatever version I have.

It all depends on what your mapping problem was and what you did to resolve it. Here are a couple of things you could try:
-Make sure the orc.loc file on ebdb1 has the same entry as ebdb2. Also, say you are using shared raw devices for CRS: make sure your raw devices are consistent on both nodes.
If the above does not work
-Make sure the shared devices are consistent on both nodes and restore one of the OCR backups. I am sure at least one of the backups 4hrs/8hrs/1day/2day/1week some thing must be a worthwhile. If you do restore OCR from a backup make sure to run cluvfy before you start your CRS.
Always a good practise to take a backup of status quo before you restore from the backups.
It would be interesting to know what lead to your disk mapping problem in the first palce.
    Good Luck!

  • Tiger won't start up, no volume to mount to?

    Hi everyone,
I was doing some permissions repair and disk cleanup, when my power went out. Now Tiger won't start up! I get a full-screen shell with the following text:
    disk0s3: I/O error.
    disk0s3: I/O error.
    /etc/master.password: Input/output error
    disk0s3: I/O error.
    -sh: /etc/profile: Input/output error
    -sh-2.05b#
If I leave the Mac on, the fans start spinning up slowly and keep building to a roar. I've left it on for about 1 minute, then shut it down.
Starting up by holding the Command key down after the startup ding gets me a screen with a folder icon (?), which proceeds to turn into a smiley face and then the bootup sequence starts. It then goes back to the full-screen shell.
I put in my Tiger (10.4) install disk, and the Disk Utility shows the Hard Drive, but the Macintosh HD volume is greyed out and won't / can't mount, be verified, or repaired.
Trying to install so that I can archive / install yields no HDs that I can install to. Luckily I keep my PC around for just such an occurance
So the question is, what is going on here? Thanks in advance,
    -Gary

You are going to have to reformat the drive. If there is a chance of data recovery it would be best if you stop using the drive altogether. Find another Mac with Firewire. Connect the two by Firewire cable. Boot the "bad" computer into Target Disk Mode, then boot the "good" computer normally. The "bad" computer's disk drive should appear on the other computer's Desktop. If the drive is still accessible, then you may be able to recover your data.
When you reformat the drive use the following procedure:
    1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
