Finder wont open, desktop empty, itunes wont close

Hi all,
I'm having troubles with Finder after istalling a program allowing to pull off music from my ipod. Suddenly error 14..something came up saying my system had been compromised.
Since then I can't open my Finder, desktop is empty, itunes doesn't shut down. Everything else is working just fine.
does anyone here can help?
thank you!

Can you post the error message in full.
Also try to start QUicktime. iTunes can't work without it. Does Quicktime start and work normally? If not describe what happens and give any error message in full.
Then head for your control panel and try to start QUicktime preferences. If you get an error message post it in full.
If your QUicktime works normally, then this Apple help is a good start for troubleshooting launch failures.:

  • When i open itunes on my desktop the itunes store wont open

When i open itunes on my desktop the itunes store wont open, Ihave tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no good. I cant even sign in. System is win7 64bit if any of that helps. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Notes v 10.6.2 - opens but no content, wont close

    10.6.2 on MBP
    syncing to iPhone regularily
suddenly, Notes via Mail app open but no content in them, wont close
no content means none in Preview Pane and none via 2x clicking
(dialogue in Prev Pane says "Loading..." but nothing ever does
    ALL Notes behave this way
    tried:
    1. deleting ~/Library/Mail/Envelope Index file
    2. DU - Repair Permissions / Verify Disk
    to no avail

<< anyway, you can test the issue by creating a new user on your mac and copying the whole mail folder and the mail plist to that user. does Mail work there? >>
yes it and Notes work fine on a virgin user account
I did a full restore of the entire MBP from my Time Machine 12-19-09 backup, sadly, to no avail. Since I didnt have this issue on that date, I cannot understand why it didnt work, ie, the problem was still there. Wierd !
To get my mail working properly again, what I did was delete the problem account, recreate a new account with same username, and am trying to restore folder by folder from Time Machine. This is not working very well:
    1. Calendar - restoring from the Application Support/Calendar folder causes a spinning beachball
    2. key desktop folders with my data - Im told that "The operation cant be completed because you dont have permisson to access some of the items".
    3. Contacts - its not obvious how to restore my contacts - where are they ?
    4. restore vs copying from the actual Finder window of a Time Machine backup isnt clear. In any case the Finder level copies yield the aforementioned error and seem to put some random number of successful copies of folders into any root folder. Not good.
Ive got a real mess on my hands now, and Ive already spent hours and hours unsorting this thing.
you are having all these permissions problems because the new user you created has a different UID than the old one. UID is different from username. it's a number. the first created user has UID 501, the second has 502 etc. UID's are what determines permissions, not user names. we can change the new user's UID to align with the old one but we need to find out what the old one was. how many users did you have. was the old user the first created on the computer?
btw, contacts are stored in homedirectory/library/application support/address book. just restore the whole directory. but don't do this yet and don't copy stuff from the TM drive via finder. use the TM interface only.

  • My iTunes wont close and is preventing my laptop from shutting down

I plugged out my iPod touch when iTunes was asking me whether I wanted an update or not, and now iTunes wont close and has frozen, preventing my laptop from shutting down. I have intel Celeron inside and Windows 7.

Mail is open but it is frozen, being this the reason why you cannot open the Mail window. Press Alt, Command and Esc keys or go to  > Force Quit, select Mail and force quit it. Finally, you will be able to turn off or restart the MacBook

    help !!!

Seems like ios6 isn't any good for any of their devices. I have an iPhone 4 and recently updated to ios6 and have had all the wifi problems and apps getting hung up on load screens. Restore is your best bet and downgrade if you can back to ios 5.1. If restore doesn't help with a fresh install of ios6 then call every Apple support number you can find and be heard like the 1,000s of other people like us with ios6 problems demanding support. There doesn't seem to be any quick fixes for ios6 other than an update from Apple.

  • Crashed, rebooted, cannot open Finder, desktop empty, Finder flickering.  Help!

I discovered my MacBook Pro OS X Version 10.6.7 had crashed.  Command+Opt+Esc would not work to reboot, so I had to press the power button to reboot.  Once it booted, I was able to launch applications in my doc, but when I went to open Finder, I got the error message 10810 that finder could not be opened.  I noticed that my desktop was completely empty, no icons.  When I close all applications, there is no bar at the top of the screen.  The little light below Finder that indicates that an application is running is flickering.  When I Command+Opt+Esc, Finder appears to flicker in the listings as well, so I can neither quit Finder nor open Finder.
Is this a virus or something else and do you have any ideas how I can fix it?
    Thank you!

    Could be corrupted Finder preferences...
    Go to ~/LIbrary/Preferences
Move the com.apple.finder.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
MIght be a good time to see how much free space there is on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
If you can't open the MacintoshHD icon, launch Disk Utility in /Applications/Utilities
Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then check Available and Capacity at the bottom of the window.

  • Itunes wont open, I get "itunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-50)"

I'm on Windows 7 - using itunes daily without problems and suddenly itunes wont open, I get "itunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-50)"  The only thing I can think is I think there was a download in progress when I shut down the computer.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalled, but I get the same thing. I tried clearing the itunes folder and reinstalling, same thing. help!

Doublechecking. When you did the complete uninstall, were you using the following document as a guide?
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
(If damaged program files are involved here, a standard install might not remove them, and a reinstall might not then replace them. So the Verify iTunes and related components are completely uninstalled section is an important step.)

  • My finder wont open when i turn on my mac.

I would simply turn on my Mac, but Finder wont open and it wont let me open other apps, the only thing that opens up is Safari, other than that i cant open anything else! I don't know whats wrong.

You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
          Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
          a) verify the disk
          b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive
         is being checked.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    4) Another way to correct filesystem problems is into single use mode.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command + s key then  powering on your machine. The command key
has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar.
    4) You may want to run applejack to clean up your machine.
          http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
    6) Run hardware diagnostics.  It's good for a sanity check.

  • FINDER WONT OPEN. NEED SUPPORT ASAP

I ACCIDENTALLY MOVED ALL FILES FROM FINDER CONTENT RESROUCES INTO THE TRASH. NOW BECAUSE ALL THE FINDER RESOURCE IS IN THE TRASH FINDER WONT OPEN. ERROR 10810 AND NOW TRASH WONT OPEN COS IS ALSO A FINDER. PLEASE HELP ASAP.

    > I have a new mac and on the very first day I did the exact same thing.
I would suggest taking advantage for your free customer support for your new system, and all Apple.  They can talk you through it. Or if you are near an Apple store, take your Mac in.
If you cannot shutdown, you can hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds and the system will power off.  This is generally a lousy way to shutdown your Mac, but it will force a reboot when you power back up.
Then insert your installation DVD you got with your new Mac, and hold down the "C" key right after you power on your Mac.  It should boot from your installation DVD.
If your installation DVD does not work, then it is most likely defective and you will need to contact Apple support for a replacement (and/or visit an Apple Store).

  • How can i be sure plugging ipod in wont automatically synch with empty itun

Hi can anyone help me, Ive just had to reformat my harddrive, which is only 20 GB anyway, and I have 30GB of music on an 80 GB Ipod. The last time i plugged my ipod into a new version of itunes (i.e when i first got it) it just emptied it through synching it up. I know I need to set it to manually manage but I'm worried that it will on first time just automatically synch it before I can switch the option.
So my question is, will plugging in the ipod to Itunes just empty it or is there a way i can make sure it wont synch up.
    Thanks
Also can I just say how appalingly dreadful apple is, no offense if you like them, an ipod's the first apple product ive ever bought and its good but the whole synch up thing is rubbish, and their customer service is a joke, a really bad joke told by someone who cant tell jokes, over and over again saying 'dyou get it dyou get it' each time, in a high nasally voice. Its really awful.

If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
