Finder Wont Start At Login; Can't Relaunch

Well, like the title says, whenever I start up in OS X the finder never ends up loading and says not responding. Using the force quit window to relaunch doesn't do anything helpful. Tried quitting, and then opening through terminal with no luck. Repaired permissions, still no luck. Any suggestions other than a clean install to fix this?

If you only want to install some few things from your install cd, then use this Pacifist, its allows you to extract items from your install disk.
Example if you lost the applescript editor. Instead of reinstallthe whole system, you can just take the applescript editor and nothing else.
You can download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/

My Mac wont start! After i restarted it for a update it just crash when i try to start it what can i do?

What and why aren't people doing something simple that has worked for the last 10 yrs:
Clone your system before you ever apply updates
Always have a working bootable backup (or two)
Keep the prior version on the shelf
Keep the combo updates around also.
It is not hard or rocket science.
There is no mechanism to undo rollback or restore check points. No utility to sandbox updates and revert as they sometimes go wrong. Things that are overdue.
MicroMat made having an "eDrive" partition s sinch to do and was its own recovery/emergency boot partition.
Carbon Copy Cloner has been around since 10.2.2, and later SuperDuper and others, Clone X etc.
A clean install is simple. Keeping your emergency boot drive for maintenance updated but with just Apple OS and essential drivers.
Use Safe Boot beforehand. People used AppleJack before updates or at first freeze or sign of trouble.
If you have more than enough room for TimeMachine, then a couple options:
Set aside 35GB is more than enough for emergency boot maintenance (Lion Recovery is nice but doesn't have everything your toolbox might want or need)...
Set up a partition large enough for your working system, again 40-80GB should be enough, you won't clone everything as you can leave your home account folders for TimeMachine if you want (but do want to copy your home Llibrary ~/Library). perfect job for Carbon Copy Cloner.
Setting up an external boot drive is 101 along with TimeMachine.
Not a good idea to have all your eggs in one basket two or more backup drives is better but...
TimeMachine - 350% your total files and changes needed to have file history archived,
    Emergency OS
    Clone OS
    I prefer a 1.5TB minimum.would do fine for most.

  • Finder doesn't start at login, can't logout/restart

After installing 10.5 I got the desktop screen without any icons or the menu bar. I was able to see the dock fine, so I clicked on Finder (it wasn't running) and started it. I thought everything was fine at this point, but after running Software Update the Mac wouldn't reboot, giving me various errors each time that a different application wouldn't quit and was preventing logout. In each case the application DID quit successfully. I have tried to manually select Logout User..., Restart... and Shut Down... however after the finder quits I get a message that the Finder won't quit and so the task cannot be accomplished. The only way to try again is to start up the Finder again and select an option which results in the same error.

This may not be a great help, but it's what I'm in the process of doing to solve the same issue on my mac mini.
I'm booting from the Mac 10.5 install DVD again, then when it's asking me where I'd like to install, I'm going to the disk utility, from the menu at the top.
From there, I've selected my boot disk and (not the partition) and clicked new image. I then saved the image to an external drive.
Once that's finished, I'm going to do an erase an install.
Once the install is complete, I'll mount the dmg file I created and use Migration assistant to get all my settings and programs back.
It's a PITA, but I'm a big believer of wiping things and starting from scratch if an upgrade doesn't go well.
If you like, I'll post back when I'm done to let you know if this worked?

isez2001 wrote:I keep seeing dbus 0.93 mentioned along with Gnome 2.16, and was wondering if perhaps the dbus update was prematurely put into current when Gnome 2.16 was moved to extra?
It's probably a mirror syncronisation issue. A lot of packages were moved from testing to current/extra.  Probably users either didn't fully updated their system (pacman -Syu) or are using a mirror which haven't sync yet.
Also, make sure that you don't use a different mirror for current and extra. If you use an up-to-date mirror for current and a less up-to-date mirror for extra, you might get this kind of problem. You can temporarily switch to a more up-to-date mirror or to the main server to make this big update.

  • Finder wont start.

    Hi!
My computer doesn't startup to Finder when i turn it on, it just goes to UNIX shell.
Basically it just says with white text "localhost:/ root#" on the black screen.
How can i acceses Finder again?

Is the machine you backed up to running Tiger? If it is, use Target Disk Mode on the broken machine, and see if Disk Utility on the Host machine as defined by http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
is able to repair disk or permissions of the damaged drive on the target machine. If after doing that, you dismount the target drive and try to reboot and it won't, how much free space is on the target machine?
If your host machine is not running Tiger, you'll need the Tiger retail installer disks to repair the machine. The retail installer discs look like the box Tiger came on:

    Someone please help!!!!

I know this isn't what you really want to hear but I'd recommend taking it in to an authorized repair location or your local Apple Store to get the Superdrive repaired or replaced so you can do an install? I don't believe you will be able load from your Dad's Window's machine. However you might be able to from an external DVD drive.
Also I might recommend getting a UPS so if you have similar issues you will have enough power to do a proper shutdown.

  • Finder wont repond, even after i relaunch it

I recently replaced my cracked screen by myself using the powerbookmedic website. The computer runs successfully, but Finder won't respond when I click it. I've tried relaunching it and after a few seconds all I get is the spinning umbrella. I've tried relaunching over and over, and the furthest I get is that my desktop items will appear, but I can't click them and Finder still won't respond, so I relaunch it again and they disappear. I've tried restarting it over and over during the few seconds after I relaunch Finder. I've tried shutting it down completely and even taking it apart again to see if I missed a plug or anything, and everything is where it is supposed to be. I think I need to reboot, but I need to save my pictures and docs, but I don't know how without using Finder..

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • My eMac wont start, how can I get all my stuff on the harddrive?

    Hello there
After I tried to install the 10.4 update, my eMac wont start up. So is it possible to boot up with another mac, and copy all my stuff to an external harddrive?
Or do I need to fix it in some other way? I just want all my data on the internal harddriv

    G'day,
    "my eMac wont start up"...
Bit hard to tell from this... but if you're happy to toss the eMac in the trash... after getting the HDD contents... there's 2 possibilities:
    1) Press the power button, and then press and hold the "t" key. Hopefully the eMac will boot into target disk mode - blue screen with a yellow firewire icon. If this works, then you can just go buy a 6pin to 6pin firewire cable, in order to connect the eMac to another Mac via the firewire port. The eMac's hard drive will appear on the other Mac, and you can copy the data off.
IF this doesn't work... ie the computer wont start up at all... no power...
    2) Search google and find the "take apart" or technical manual for your model eMac, and disassemble it to the point you can remove the hard drive physically. Then put it into an external case and get the data off that way...
UNLESS of course, it's the hard drive that's dead...
More info for us on what's going wrong?
    cheers
    cosmic

where can I find the Start up disk on theMac Book Air?
How can I delete files from it?

The startup disk is the internal SSD in your MBA.  You may delete files by draging the file  to Trash (or clicking on them and then execute COMMAND+Delete).  Then empty Trash.

Unfortunately I tried that and it didn't work. Thanks for the help though. I tried to uninstall and it said I couldn't because the file is corrupt or something, but I think I finally got it uninstalled and/or deleted or whatever, but now I try to reinstall/download it again from the beginning and I can't. No matter what I do I can not get Firefox working again. No matter how many times I try to redownload it. Any other suggestions?

  • If I can't find the start up disks, is there anyway to get iWork back after installing a new hard drive?

I had to install a new hard drive because my orginal one crashed. When I bought my macbook, iWork came pre-installed. Now with a new hard drive I would like iWork back on my computer, but can't find the start up disks, assuming I'd be able to do it that way. Is there anyway I can contact Apple and have them give me the iWork software?
(Overall, very upset about this since my macbook is only 2 years old and I lost everything. A friend of mine has been working on it for 3 weeks trying to recover some data.)

    - Did you restore from a backup that contained the photos?
    - The backup only contains photos in the iPod's Camera Roll album. It does not included photos synced to the iPod.
    - All you can do is try restoring from backup again.
