Finding a decent cli mail client.

So I've been using mutt for a little while now and besides the setup and annoying default keys, I really enjoy using it.  Lately, though, I've been trying to set it up to hit different IMAP accounts with no success and I'm about about to throw the towel in on it.
I hear cone isn't bad for multi account and GPG usage, but the fonts are corrupted when I start it up...it's just junk output.
I didn't really like Alpine for enough reasons that I won't even consider using it again.
SO...based on this stuff, would I be able to get suggestions for a new mailing client that's a configurable as mutt, supports multiple accounts and GPG?  I'm willing to try working with mutt some more and cone, but it's really starting to aggravate me that there isn't something out there that (generally speaking) 'just works', without having to use some messy hack or having at least a decent man page (I'm looking at you, cone).

I use mutt + offlineimap + 5 different imap accounts and the whole things works flawlessly (all credit to Brisbin33's excellent walkthrough...). Throw in the fact that you can change all the keybinds, and I doubt you will find a better solution.
FWIW: I posted a very short list of 5 alternate mail clients on Friday: it may prove helpful: http://jasonwryan.com/post/911160906/mail

  • Scriptable mail client with good support for html and flash

    Hi,
on one hand I'm looking for the uzbl/luakit/.. equivalent in the mail client world: I want a very high level of control over how mails are fetched, filtered, displayed, scripts, keybinds, etc etc.
On the other hand I also want the client to handle html mails properly, even when they include html5 sound/video clips and/or flash widgets/videos.
This might sound ironic, but I use rss2email to get all my newsfeeds delivered to my mailbox.  I think this makes a lot of sense, a centralized repository for all the messages I want to get.
But those newsposts often contain html5 and flash widgets, which I want to be able to use from inside the mailclient.
Also I expect usage of the xdg basedir spec and sane use of files (a simple text config file, and maximum a few binary files for caches/indexes etc)
A good search system based on sup/notmuch/xapian would also be welcome.
I just can't find a mail client like this.  Any suggestions?  Maybe anything that's close, so I could hack it a bit myself?
Claws-mail is the least sucky client I could find, but still it doesn't give me the advanced scriptability, it makes a mess in my homedir and doesn't support html5/flash.

Thid may take you a bit away from your current setup, but if you have used sup you shouldn't be too scared ;D
Ive started using mutt a while back, and if properly configured it can do a _lot_ of things and very well at that too!
    Anyway, to answer your post:
    1) Mutt can be configured to retieve your rss feeds, so you dont need to use rss2email and still get a centralilsed repo for your email and rss and, you will be able to keep your email account uncluttered with rss mail (but thats personal preference).
    2) Intrinsically, like all CLI mail clients, butt doesnt show html/html5 or embedded flash in email. /BUT/ you can configure it to use a differen program to handle this automatically.
So, you will be able to get say uzbl, or jumanji or surf (if you're into your lightweight browsers) to open those multimedia emails. Edit: it seems you will probably have to use links2, but you may be able to use other clients (they will have to open as a seperate application though, whilst links2 is able to stay embedded. Maybe this can be done with the other browsers but I haven't tried nor researched this.
    Generally as: (in .muttrc)
    # enriched messages
    auto_view text/html # view html automatically
    alternative_order text/plain text/enriched text/html # but save it for last
Credit for that snippet goes to something i found on dotfiles. If I ever find the author's name, I shall edit it in here.
You will also need to create a .mailcap file with the relevant data. A basic google search reveals some good tutorials for this.

  • Can not find some messages in Mail using search

I have some problems with Mail.app I can not find some messages in Mail using search, the strange thing is that sometimes mail search finds some messages, but after rebuilding spotlight index the search displays other messages with the all messages searched using same search criteria. I have also tried to delete Envelope index file from the Mail folder in usr/library and forced mail to import all mailboxes but it started to crash importing some of mailboxes - I deleted the messages from that mailboxes, imported remaining mailboxes and tried to rebuild mailbox, but everything without a successes. Any ideas how to solve it?

  • Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run ...

Lync 2013 generates repeated messages stating “Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client.”. Events that
seem to generate messages is disconnecting and re-connecting to a network but it also happens randomly and the messages will stack up during a working day. Everything seem to work OK but it is an annoyance.  The computer is upgraded (uninstalled first)
from Office 2013 ProPlus to Office 365 ProPlus. Outlook (Desktop) is default mail client. 64-bit Windows 8.1 Enterprise, 64-bit Office (both before upgrade and after).
(Links removed to remediations I've tried)
Made no difference what so ever and the messages continue. What's next?
I posted the above to the Office 2013 forum (unfortunately I'm not allowed yet to post a link to that posting) but due to the fact that the computer affected by this is a networked domain computer I've been redirected to this group instead.  I
was asked some additional questions ing the other forum regarding the problem:
Are you able to send mails from other applications like Word or Excel?
    NO
Is the PC connected to any Domain/Server? YES
Is this an issue with one PC only. NO - affects all computers that once had Office 2013 Pro Plus installed and now has Office 365 Pro Plus (Originally I posted this question in the Office 365 community but was directed to first the Office
2013 forum and now this forum)
Right click on any file and Click on Send to-> Mail Recipient and check if you are able to send mails using Outlook.
    NO
Also check if the Lync add-in is enabled in Outlook.
    Start Outlook
    Click the File tab.
    Go to Options.
    Click Add-ins.
Check if the Lync add-in is enabled. YES
My last posting in the other forum contained the following additional information regarding our problem:
As far as we can see installing 32-bit Office 365 Pro Plus using click to run makes no difference.
We do not send any mails from Lync, Lync is however the process that generates the message most frequently (as Lync seem to react upon network events).
Other processes that have Outlook plugins may also be the parent of the message popup (third party applications).
Yes the Lync add-in is enabled. Lync functionality in/from Outlook seem unaffected.
It is not possible to send emails from other applications (explorer, word, excel etc.) ie. right clicking and send to generates the messages and
a follow up error message concerning lack of MAPI enabled e-mail.

  • How to reset time for Firefox' mail client, so it would match my desktop's summer time?

After I changed time from winter to summer on my desktop, information about the time when I sent or receive e-mail using Firefox Internet browser and Google mail client is one hour off:
When I check my SENT box, there is information about my immediate recent message that suggests that it has been sent out an hour ago.
I tried to find relevant Google mail client's and Firefox Internet browser settings, but couldn't.
    What should I do?
    Thank you.

Firefox doesn't do email, it's a web browser.
If you are using Firefox to access your mail, you are using "web-mail". You need to seek support from your service provider or a forum for that service.

  • How can I do a clean install of Mac Mail client? ...

... without doing a clean reinstall of the entire OS?
I've been wrestling with my Mac Mail client all day and am pretty sure I've got a corrupted file somewhere, either in the app or in the Home<Library folder somewhere. I've been using the mail app for several years without issues with .mac mail as the primary and a couple of POP accounts from gmail and pacbell. The troubles began late Monday when I was batch deleting some old e-mails from the mail server. The entire inbox (maybe 120+ e-mails disappeared.
Since then, I can receive mail from all three mail providers, but am unable to send via any provider on my Mac Mail client. I have a PC that pulls mail from all three services via POP3, and it's working fine for both sending and receiving.
I was also able to create a .mac account on the Mac Mail client on a spare iMac and had no trouble sending or receiving from it. But the Mail client on my G5 refuses to send. I've reconfigured all the accounts, checked them 10 times, deleted and reinstalled them all, all to no avail, which is why I think there's bad ju-ju in one of the files somewhere.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks.

First find out if you need to reinstall the mail app. Create a new user by going to system preferences >accounts. Unlock the lock and click on the + sign. Create a new user account. Log into the new user by going to the apple menu and logging out. In the new user go to system preferences>.mac. Enter your user name and password. If you can log in here then open Mail. Your .mac mail should be automatically set up. Send a test e-mail to yourself. If Mail works then the problem is specific to your user account and you do not need to reinstall the Mail app. If the Mail works then consider continuing to set up your other accounts in this user. Once your accounts are working in the new user close all windows and applications. Go the the ~/Library/Preferences and holding down on the Option key drag the com.apple.mail.plist to desktop. Now select your hard drive icon in the finder window and double click on the Users folder. Drag the com.apple.mail.plist into the Shared folder. Log out of your new user account and back into your account. Navigate to the ~/Library/Preferences and drag your com.apple.mail.plist from that folder onto the desktop. Open your hard drive and go to the Users folder and open it, then open the Shared folder. Drag the com.apple .mail.plist from the shared folder into the open Preferences window. Close the windows and open mail. Mail should work.

  • Outlook (former Hotmail) Forum says I need to get a "Mail Client" that works with 10.4.11

    Hello Apple Friends:
    I have a PowerBook G4 still running Tiger 10.4.11.
Unfortunately, due to virus concerns and spam at work, I have had to use non-apple mail such as Hotmail for well over a decade now.  Not a problem!  Mac works fine.  But the folks over in the "Microsoft" (delete that word after reading it) group felt their Hotmail was too old fashioned and jazzed it up and are calling it Outlook now.
And Hotmail/new Outlook no longer works like it did before on the Tiger OSX of course!
After over a month and reading dozens of Emails (about 20 which I sent myself) to various Forums and help groups, the latest "advice" is that I go searching for an "old style" "Mail client" whatever that is.... that will work with Tiger 10.4.11.  And install and transfer it somehow, hopefully without losing or deleting 17 years of contacts and Email, transfer over to using it for my Outlook (I looked at some others who have the great modern Mountain Lion etc OSX systems and read their posts about this and they had significant problems using the new Outlook too.
Problem is, I deal with many very stubborn people who are just not going to spend the time and effort needed to "convert" my "hotmail" address into anything new to replace it, not even counting how many weeks of effort, missed emails messed up communications this will entail and last far into 2014 I'm sure.
The best hope is that someone knows of a "Legacy" site with older mail clients on it (or even older browsers than my Safari 4.1.3 in case someone thinks that is the problem (I also tried it with Firefox, but only can have up to 3.6.28 and TenFoxFour is not highly recommended as it creates unstable computers occassionally)
So I'm caught in the middle trying to upgrade older Mac and without the funds needed to purchase one that has Intel Chip in it for use with something higher than Leopard so I can use the Hotmail/Outlook again.
Sorry for long message, but I wanted to cover all the bases in case someone is searching the data base of the Forum in later months, and hopefully someone else here has has similiar total frustration with trying to continue using the  "M--------" free Email product.
While I'm on the topic, I wondered if the .Mac was an Email client?   I had it once but long ago subscrption elapsed and got notice that it became "mobile me" or something like that....just covering all the bases since Apple has so many more choices.
Thanks for reading all of this complicated (you should only see the other Emails!) question. (sorry products and username are wrong for this message can't get the hang of editing them "before" I think of writing the message!).

    Hi BDAqua:
Just catching up to your earlier suggestions so hope this is not taken as anything less than the excellent advice and fantastic support you have given me here..
I cannot use the current edition of Sea Monkey  2.17.1  as  System Requirements are : 10.6 Minimum, and I have Tiger 10.4.11 max in "non-Intel"  G4
Note also that reading details (I always do)  I cannot just jump to that one if I could or wanted to as too old a Sea Monkey at 1.1.19.  They say to upgrade to 2.0 first, then reset the "profile" page  (does anyone remember my password or even what Email I used back in 2004??)  before moving on to upgrade  (use it at least once in new profile of course!)
So I copied them first here for anyone else's information:
    System Requirements, Installation and Uninstallation
Before installing, make sure your computer meets the system requirements. SeaMonkey 2.17.1 will no longer offer to migrate your data from SeaMonkey 1.x or Mozilla 1.x at the first start after installation (bug 689437). In order to upgrade from such an old version, install the last SeaMonkey 2.0 release first, do the one-time profile upgrade, uninstall SeaMonkey 2.0 and then install your target release (e.g. this one).
You can find more details about installation, profile data and uninstallation in our install and uninstall document.
Here are the specifics of Minimum Requirements of Sea Monkey 2.17.1  version:
    Mac
    Operating Systems
Mac OS X 10.6 or higher
    Minimum Hardware
Macintosh computer with an Intel processor
200 MB of free hard drive space
Older System Sea monkey 2.0 requirements are ::
    Mac
    Operating Systems
    Mac OS X "Tiger" (10.4)
    Mac OS X "Leopard" (10.5)
Mac OS X "Snow Leopard" (10.6)
    Minimum Hardware
Macintosh computer with an Intel x86 or PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    256 MB RAM
200 MB of free hard drive space
But.....  Caution signs are EVERYWHERE not to download or use this anymore.....
(I know my 1.1.19 is  really old but so old no one bothers with it anymore??  but newer ones may have huge security loophole for viruses etc....
    Sea Monkey 2.0.14 Warns:
    Released April 28, 2011
WARNING! The SeaMonkey version available for download from this page is outdated and suffers from known security vulnerabilities. This page is only available for historic reference.
We strongly advise you to download the current release instead.
So I'm sorry if I could not follow your instructions and get a better Sea Monkey Experience as well.....  I'm just using existing one as another browser in addition to the newer ones provided as I use them for different purposes, i.e. Sea Monkey can be great for just interrupted "look ups" on google, etc of a quick definition and then closing it, so nothing complicated, no Java/Adobe Flash ads requirements, etc in and out that's all.
Then I can leave my major browsing and using Email Hotmail/Outllook which prompted this whole exploration of solutions for the two brand new browsers TenFourFox and OmniWeb..
Thanks again to everyone!  I replied to everyone below in addition to this reply above to BDAqua....

Fortunately most of that randomly-bolded stuff you posted is irrelevant. And the one line which is relevant isn't helpful.
You'll want to make sure that the server you're connecting to (the mail.smtp.host property) is actually running an SMTP server, and that you can connect to it and that there isn't a firewall or anything blocking you.
And you should read the JavaMail FAQ. There's a whole section in it about this question and other sections about other questions you are going to have.

Hi - for some reason, my IPAD3 mail client has decided it can no longer connect to my Exchange server.  It's worked like a charm for weeks.  Any thoughts?
For the record, I've got a POP mail account that is working fine on the machine and the WIFI is up and running (Safari is loading fine).
    Thanks

    Hi Jim,
Your issue is the most FAQ in the forums, it is an ongoing problem with Tiger waiting to be fixed by Apple. Till then, forget your aliases and use either Command-K or from the Finder Go-->Connect to Server and enter the remote Mac's IP address to connect.
Also, Open Utilities-->Terminal and type lookupd -flushcache (Press Return) and reboot. Do this for both macs.

    Hi there,
I use Outlook 2003 and only sync my outlook calendar & contacts with my iPhone 3GS.
Everytime I try to sync, I get the error message "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client."
It's already set as the default mail client
And I've uninstalled & re-installed both iTunes & Outlook (been working on it the whole day!!!)
Anyone out there has a solution? Would really save the day!!

Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfil the message request. Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client.
OK, so this should be straight forward:
I set outlook at the default mail client and associate all file with it from Outlook\File\Option.  Nope.  That does not work.
I go through default programs and set the default mail client as Office 2013 and associate all file with it from Outlook.   Nope.  That does not work.
I check the registry and it shows that the 64 bit or 32 bit reversion is the default mail client.  So that does not help.
I install the 64 bit version instead of the 32 bit version. Nope.  That does not work.
I clean the registry and temp file.  Nope.  That does not work.
I tried: Uninstalled with the Microsoft
fix uninstall and reinstall. This does not work.
Contact the phone technical support. This
    does not work.
Addin,s does not work. Adobe, iCloud Addin ....  does not work.
'Send email to'   menu   does not work.
    No application communicates with
Outlook, no Microsoft  or third  apps.
I can only send and receive emails

  • No Default Mail Client Error with Outlook 2010, Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server, and TAM

We are running a software package on a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server called TAM (The Agency Manager) along with Outlook 2010.  The application uses a MAPI connection to retrieve mail data from Outlook to be able to send and receive messages inside
the application.  On our individual PC's this works just fine, but on the Terminal Server users we get the message "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request.  Please run Microsoft Outlook
and set it as the default mail client."
I've tried the steps listed in KB 813745 which tells you to delete the registry keys and run a repair in Office, but that didn't resolve the issue.  I've searched on this issue, but haven't found anything useful.  Any suggestions would be much
    appreciated.

Try to set DEP and add outlook.exe. I had outlook 2007 same problem. With DEP enabled and outlook, word en excel also added to the list it worked again.
You can find it under this computer, properties, then change settings. Click advanced tab and then select the first "settings" option. The click the "Data Execution Prevention" (DEP) and select the last option and add the office programs
    there.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows 8 MAIL client renames G-Mail PDF attachments filename and extension to PDF????

    Hi PPL,
I have the Windows 8 MAIL client configured to get G-Mail based on an imap configuration.
When opening gmail.com in Internet Explorer and looking at a specific email I do see 2 attachments for example with name: "Mail Attachement1.PDF" &  "Mail Attachement2.PDF" In the browser I can open the attachment as pdf files.
When opening the mail in the Windows 8 MAIL client the attachment are renamed to:
    ATT000442.ext & ATT000445.ext
I can't find what is causing this, please help!!

    same issue....
Do a Network capture of the HTTP message flow.  E.g. use Fiddler4 in order to get its Enable Local Loopback utility
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/fiddler/archive/2011/12/10/fiddler-windows-8-apps-enable-loopback-network-isolation-exemption.aspx
Most likely you will find that a Content-type header is what is causing your symptom.  Then you could ask the administrator of the server to change that to make sure that it looks like .pdf and not what you are getting.  Note that Fiddler would
allow you to create your own override to test whatever change you would like to be implemented.
