Finding a forever lost iPhone

Unless you're really lucky and the person who got your iPhone is so altruistic to go and succeed in returning it to you, there are too many issues with getting it back - unlike it may appear, specially if you did sign up for Find My Phone. That service do almost no good in actual retrieving a lost phone - except to help that selfless one with sending an informative message. It can only truly helps in locking and wiping it. Even if you're lucky to get the phone location, unless it's stationary somewhere you have been, you won't have any chance on pin-pointing its exact location. There are some apps out there that improve slightly on this by adding camera images - but then again you have to be really lucky it's a stupid thief.
The best measure I've seem so far to have any real chance of finding it would be Rewarding Return. You put their label on your valuable which gives a link to their website in which the person who finds it can claim a reward you've set. And they pay for all shipping costs (probably within USA only). Nobody needs such a service to apply the idea, but it sure makes easier to who have access to it.
All methods so far only helps if you've prepared yourself before hand and, yet, none of them helps if the device was actually stolen - which is way more likely to happen. Because the first thing a thief will do is turn off the device. And of course he is not looking for a lame reward and specially not to face the victim again - unless it's for stealing more stuff.
By all means, do take all measures above - you may be lucky on your lost device. But here I'm requesting Apple to take deeper measures and help their costumers get a true peace of mind on their expensive investment. Yeah, I understand specially in USA there are many law enforcements that could hurt Apple if they take a stance here. But there's at very least 1 thing that Apple should do and they're not doing. And I would like to believe they are trying to come up with a solution to make "Find My Phone" an actual good solution able to work even if you didn't register and specially even if the phone gets wiped or hacked as ****. On the next apple link we can also see "Apple does not have a process to track or flag lost or stolen product". But, c'mon, of course the tecnology exists and the process probably isn't at our hands just because of bureocractic law issues!
Unlike Apple seem to claim, there's usually close to nothing the local law enforcement can do to help us finding any lost or stolen belongings and the carrier also have limited data on their hands to help on something that should be close to trivial for Apple to do. AT&T do show a capability to locate any phone, but that's not something every carrier do and I can't be sure (since I don't live in USA to try it) if that really can help finding any stolen device - I would guess it only works for the registered SIM so it's not per device.
In the end I just want to do one request to Apple here: please, allow the IMEI lock on iPhone to lock the whole phone and turn it into a piece of useless brick - not just losing the phone functionality! Bonus points to only allow it to keep sending the signals to towers with its location!!
The first measure alone can potentially reduce iPhone theft to zero, because if enough stolen phone gets reported - and iPhone users do tend to be very fond to their gadget - the thieves will regret going through all the trouble. The second measure, of course, is the what we all hope (and some people like myself use to expect) from "Find My Phone" - a great Apple service to lead us to always find our phone.
And if you read this far, you can do something to help us all: file a feedback request and link it to here! Maybe our voice can be heard.
Thanks for reading!

klaingh, after talking to the phone with a couple of apple representatives, and just a small amount of logic deducing, I must say there is no chance of finding a restored iPhone through "Find my iPhone" or any Apple's resources. That's why Rewarding Return might be our best bet nowadays.
The other "viable" option today is hoping the carrier representant will aprehend the phone once the person who found it tries to activate it, if you have reported it with the IMEI and Serial Number. This is where I think the policy should be enforced... But it isn't.
I wish you best of luck!

  • Finding family members lost iPhone

If I want to locate a family members lost iphone does the username and password for icloud have to be the same on his device and mine?
What if his username and password are different than mine, can I still locate his lost iphone?

You need to sign into iCloud (or find my iPhone app) with his Apple ID and password. For this to work he needed to have location services active.

  • How can I find my offline lost iphone 5?

I think that if you can lock your phone remotely, apple should provide a service where we can turn on our phone remotely. Otherwise, what is icloud find my iphone app good for? I lost my phone a week ago and since I lost it, it has been turned off. I obviously cannot locate it, if it has been turned off. I know people lose their iphones all the time, and they are not cheap to replace. I also know that people steal these and target people specifically with iphones and wait until they set it down for a split second and steal it from you and turn around and sell it on ebay. I just think apple should do something more to help protect their customers who have had their device lost and/or stolen within a certain time period. I have had my first iphone for only 2 months and now it is gone and I cannot even locate it.

If Apple made it possible for people to turn on their iPhones remotely they would have to restructure account security from the ground up. Conventional identification verification methods would not suffice. As it stands it is already simple enough for anyone who knows enough of your personal info to gain access to our account. If that same information could be used to remotely access your phone you would be opening yourself up to whole new level of threat.
...Although I suppose if you were really worried about security and privacy you could try taking better care of your "not cheap to replace" iPhone 5.

  • HT4623 Is there any way to find a lost iPhone once the phone's battery has expired?

I have lost my iPhone(4)and the battery is dead. I have the "locate device application", however, I know the battery is dead. To my knowledge, once the battery has expired, it cannot be retrieved using the "lost device/find my device" application.?? Is this correct? If so, is there another way to find this lost iPhone?

Thanks for taking the time to respond!!
I didn't think so, but was hoping this was a time, that someone knew something that I didn't.

As long as you enabled it when you first activated your Iphone, it's pretty straightforward.  Using any computer, go to icloud.com.  Sign in with your Apple ID. A screen will come up with a map showing the general location of your phone.  If you have a friend with an iphone and are logged in using Safari, when you get close, you can tell your iphone to make a sound.  Good luck.

  • Finding a Lost iPhone

I've tried to find my lost iPhone. Checking on iCloud, it says the iphone doesn't have a wi-fi connection. Is there a way to find it via the cellular service?

If you had Find My iPhone activated on the device and it is not showing up when logging into iCloud, did you contact your carrier and have them suspend the device? If so, you will not be able to locate the device via cellular. If you did not have them suspend it, it should show up if it has a cellular connection, unless the device has been found, powered off, or the SIM removed or the device restored. If any of those have happened, you will not be able to locate the device.

  • How to find my lost iPhone

How to find my lost iPhone? My phone was stolen last night, I have the serial number, and there is a lot important imfoations in my phone, how can I find it? I gave already report this to the police

If you set up the Find My iPhone service prior to your iPhone going missing, then there is a chance that can be tracked, though it depends on a number of factors (the iPhone is turned on, connected to either the 3G or a WiFi network, or has not had the Find My iPhone service disabled or the iPhone been completely restored). If you can get a location, you can give that information to the police, who may or may not act on it.
If you did not set up Find My iPhone, then there is no way to track it. You've already contacted the police, so the only other thing to do is change any passwords for any online accounts you may have used from your iPhone (the iTunes Store, for instance).
    Regards.

  • HT1976 How can I find my lost iPhone 4

How can I find my lost iPhone 4

One way is through the Find My Phone application but provided that:-
    1) the iPhone is connected to the internet (be it by way of Wifi OR data); and
    2) you have previously activated the feature.
Then again, even if the above conditions are true, you will most probably only get the rough location of the phone and not the "exact" location of it.For instance, if the iPhone is in a high rise building with 60 floors, you will only know it is in the building but never which floor it is.
Unless you are carrying your laptop all around, activating the Siren would assist you in finding your iPhone.
    Good luck (Taken style)

Yeah, it's called Find My iPhone, and it's been around for a while.  In fact, on your device, under Settings > iCloud, the Find My iPhone setting is available.
Read your user manual, you'll learn a lot of things about your device and you'll also avoid making 'suggestions' that have already been implemented for years.

  • HT204266 How do I retrieve a lost iphone with the Find My Iphone app?

How do I retrieve a lost iphone with the Find My Iphone app?
I got my iphone stolen right out of my bag and I am assuming there is no way of retrieving the phone back unless I have the Find My Iphone app? I am hoping someone could prove me wrong or give me another solution to getting it back. I have a lot of photos, videos and memories in that phone and I would do anything to get it back. Please help!

"I got my iphone stolen right out of my bag and I am assuming there is no way of retrieving the phone back unless I have the Find My Iphone app?"
It is not an app.  It is a feature of icloud and iphone.  Did you set it up on the iphone itself BEFORE it was stolen?  If not, then you cannot track it at all.
Change your passwords and report it to the police.

    Try this:
If you have access to your computer, but not your iPhone
Open iTunes and mouse over a device backup:
Open Preferences in iTunes. (In Mac OS X, choose iTunes > Preferences. In Windows, choose Edit > Preferences.)
    Click the Devices tab.
Position the mouse over a backup to display the phone number, serial number, and IMEI or MEID of the backed-up iPhone.
