Finding all "virtual copies" in my database

For a couple months now, I have been using virtual copies for certain tasks which I now realize would have been much easier done if I had chosen to use snapshots instead. Now i have dozens of virtual copies of my RAW images scattered all over the place, and I can't seem to find a way to quickly gather them all up into one place so that I can deal with them...Is there a way to do this, or does it really have to be done by manually going through my entire collection of images and keeping an eye out for the page curl icon on each virtual copy's thumbnail? Please advise...Thanks!

Disagree John
I'll pollute my keyword the way i like. I don't use KWords a great deal, but for this situation it would provide the ideal solution, so the user does not have to keep chopping and changing between modules as one edits there images.
That is what keywords are for. To allow the user to filter/view there images according to there own desires. I create a keyword "virtual copy" for all my VC, but it is annoying to have to go back to the library from the develop module to do this for each individual image.
Also, VC and greyscale are 2 particular and unique editing option provided in the develop module within LR, that require DB management in bulk.

  • Need to find all Virtual Comports with VID 403 and PID 6001

I program in AutoIT. In a nutshell I need to find the Comport Number
(not parsed from the FriendlyName and will explain) for all Virtual Serial Ports
having VID 403 and PID 6001. It is a FTDI Virtual Serial Port.
I was using the WMI call to Win32_PnPEntity and excluding ports not having
DeviceID "FTDIBUS\VID_0403+PID_6001". The $oItem.name would than yield something
like "USB Serial Port (COM17)". This is the Device Manage description. I could then
parse out the "COM17" and start communicatin with that port via RS232. The problem....
COM17 is the FriendlyName and the actual port was 25. Yes that is correct.
Device Manager shows "USB Serial Port (COM17)" butif you right click on it and
go to properties the actual port number is 25. I verified it by using putty and indeed
it was COM25. So the "FriendlyName" does reflect the true Comport Number.
I found a little utility by uwe-sieber ComPortMan which comes with a little
utility called listports.exe. Here is the output:
    PortName          : COM25
    KernelName       : \Device\VCP0
    DeviceID           : FTDIBUS\VID_0403+PID_6001+A901R735A\0000
    ParentDeviceID  : USB\VID_0403&PID_6001\A901R735
    DriverKeyName  : {4D36E978-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0088
FriendlyName     : USB Serial Port (COM17)
As you can see the true Comport is 25 yet the firendly name is "USB Serial Port (COM17)".
So... I need to find a way to retrieve the actual "PortName" and not parse the "FriendlyName".
As mentioned the WMI call to Win32_PnPEntity returns the FriendlyName. A WMI call to
Win32_SerialPort wont work with Virtial ComPorts. I am at a loss. I know it can be done
because the listports utility does it. I have no idea where to start at this point. Help!

    You can use SetupDiOpenDevRegKey to
open the device's registry and query the "PortName" value; this will give you back something like "COM4". There are a few more ways
    to query COM ports.

  • Find and export Virtual Copies: Easy to add and ( i would argue) Necessary

I haven't found an easy way to go back and easily select all virtual copies in a library in order to export them.
A virtual copy is easy to miss and sometimes its hard to remember where you made changes in a large collection.
There needs to be a search option for file types in LightRoom that can find the virtual copies and allow them to be collectively exported as real copies.
If not a search function, then please simply insert a "save all virtual copies" option in the export area. Perhaps it could have the option to export all to their respective original file's folder OR to a designated edits folder with some tag to refer to the original location.
I would very much appreciate an official adobe contact if at all possible :-/

You can filter out Virtual Copies using a button on the filter bar located in the bottom right corner of the Lr application window (just above the filmstrip). Click a folder (folder panel) to narrow the filter to a specific folder or subfolders or the top most folder to show all virtual copies. You'll also find the second button will show only Master photos.

  • Export Catalog - Virtual Copies

Hi. If you export a group of photos as a Catalog, does this export all virtual copies including their own repsective xmp data? I need to send a batch of RAW files to someone but need them to be able to see all the virtual copies as well.

Yes, export as catalog takes the respective VC's with it. Remember they exist in the catalog only.

  • Virtual Copies Not Showing Up

So, going along and doing some editing by creating virtual copies and now new copies I make aren't showing up. It stopped doing that and now it's doing it again. I've accidentally made six virtual copies, then it stacked them together but wouldn't unstack when I right clicked. With this photo, I've created a virtual copy but in the grid it doesn't show up at all:
But other virtual copies from the other day do:
I have no idea why this happened. How do I get all my photos, including ALL virtual copies to show up in the grid? Unstacking is not an option:
    I'm so confused. Thanks.

    Nope, didn't undo afterwards.
    @ dj_paige
    >Are you in a collection when you create the virtual copy?
I was. I've done it before and no problem at all, my copies always show up. I feel really silly because I've just gone to All Photos and there are all my virtual copies. Do you know why they wouldn't show in the collection? And when I pop back and forth in collections/all photos, I lose my place. Is there a way to come back to the same place?
    Thank you very much.

  • Finding Virtual Copies in Smart Collections

Is there any way to find virtual copies in smart collections without using "copy name is not empty" ? Basically I am trying to use copy name as a version number for all images, include the base image which is the original. But this then makes it difficult to find the actual copies themselves. Any ideas?
    Thanks

I'll see whether a smart collection can work from a saved filter, which can identify the real VCs correctly.
Not sure what this means, but if you want "Is Virtual Copy" metadata available for (standard Lr native) smart collections, it is available via
    Metadata Extensions
The only caveat is that the metadata is not updated immediately, so you need to "manage" the metadata updating and/or your expectations.
Funny - I just ran into the need for this last night - I solved by making sure all virtual copy names were distinguishable from master copy names, still: because of Lightroom's text metadata processing shortcomings (e.g. space handling and "Big Mallard Ducks" bug), It really is best to have a yes/no rule.

All of a sudden I cannot create virtual copies nor can I import my corrected image from PS back 2 LR

Thanks Terence, I rebuilt my database....I was not aware that I could access rebuild tools by holding the command and options buttons. Like I said, I'm new to Mac. I was able to recreate my missing photo's but they aren't the same pixel quality as the originals, look kind of blurry....any thoughts on this???

  • Can not find virtual copies in Windows folder.

I can not remember to have encountered this before, so here I go: I just created a virtual copy of some photos from my summer holiday, and all works well. But when I needed to access these photos going the Windows' way (Windows/My Pictures that is), the virtual copies do not appear in my YYYYMM folder. Going back to LR though, they will appear there with a /Copy 1 extension. RIghtclicking the VC, then "Show in Explorer" will highlight the original in the folder, the VC still not being there. Part of the frustration is that I can not remember this happening before (or maybe it has), so I'm wondering if I by accident have changed any settings.
    Running LR 4.1 on Windows 7 64-bit.
    Thanks in advance.

My only point, was an observation that there is very little actual practical difference between a virtual copy and a "master" ANYWAY.
So you have 1 master (an actual raw) and 10 VC’s. What happens to the VC’s if the master gets corrupted?
If your master has say Adobe Standard as the DNG Profile but the VC has a custom DNG profile, what happens to the VC if that profie goes missing or gets corrupted? Try it.
If by "master", you mean the Raw file on disk, then if that is corrupted (something I have never yet experienced IIRC; although I still backup against this possibility) then certainly, all images derived from that will suffer. However adding VCs does not increase the absolute risk of that. The way I was using "master", was to refer to the one LR metadata set which, unlike a VC metadata set, currently asserts a functional link to the source file. If that LR metadata set were to get corrupted, (something I have never yet experienced either IIRC, although I still backup against that possibility too) then I might be glad of a VC which I could immediately promote to that role and status instead.
Certainly bad things may happen to a VC if a required external file is lost or changed - but these are exactly the same bad things, as if the exact same events had happened for the "master" version alongside. I do take the point that there is protection in redundancy - no question - and also that instantly written-out metadata is a useful separate backup of one's work (as I mentioned, I'd be glad if VCs could get the same thing too somehow, someday).
One-to-many dependency on a single source file can make some good things happen too, though, which may be judged worth any potential added risks. Say deliberate changes are newly made to a Photoshop edit on which several LR image versions are based. These updates will ripple through all virtual versions automatically; whereas if these versions had instead been fully independent, the same changes would need to be made repeatedly to get the same result; assuming one wants all these versions to reflect the changes; which is (should be; needs to be) the realistic expectation, when one has opted to use a cluster of VCs in the first place.

  • Mail subject search is not finding All copies why?

mail 6.3 using a subject search (in the small spotlght)  - is not finding All copies in my folders and subfolders why? I have done indexing for all mail folders and that did not correct it.

Are you really still running OS X version 10.7.4 as your post indicates above?  I don't believe Mail 6.3 would run correctly on Lion.
If not, and you're really running Mountain Lion, then I suggest Mailbox > Rebuild on the box(es) / folder(s) not working correctly.

  • (Finding and) deleting virtual copies

    Hi.
Somehow I have managed to create virtual copies of 1000 or so photos. This happened (I believe) while trying to clean up a collection folder. So what I want to do now, is to sort out - and isolate? - the virtual copies created accidently. I tried using Library Filter/Virtual Copies and the sorting by edit time, but still it seems it will take some time to find the ones that were made virtual copies by intent and those which weren't. As I also have done quite a lot of editing work prior to this accident, I'd rather not go back to a previous back-up.
So, to sum it up: what is the best way to find only the virtual copies created since, let's say 10 o'clock this morning?
    Thanks in advance,
    ole k

I may be a bit slow, but I still don't quite get this: LR  is able to sort (in Smart Collection) by Added Order, but there is no way of seeing when the VC was actually created?
Please also see my last question rgd. what I should put in the box next to "Contains". (o or 0 or nothing?). Whenever I make a VC, in the metadata list i t will be called "Copy 1". This means that my smart collection will include both the VCs that I've made intentionally and those made by mistake, right - I mean as long as it's got "Copy #" in the name box? In case, I can't quite make the number of files listed match with what I'd expect to find there, but if you suggest that using this method and then sort descending (why not ascending?) and then deleting, I'll trust you and do just that.
BTW, you (John) were absolutely right about the source of this confusion, I had - of some reason - checked the box next to Create Virtual Copy in the Create Collection menu. Needless to say, it is no longer checked . . . . .

  • 'Virtual' Copies to (optionally) start all settings from 0

I would like to have the ability to make a 'virtual' copy that looks like the current image, except that all the sliders/settings start at 0.  This is different from making the original virtual copies and resetting the sliders/settings, which would just bring it back to the imported version.  This is like actually having a virtual copy of the current image as it is, rather than a virtual copy of the original image with the same settings applied - a subtle but very important difference.
The reason for this is so that presents would be A LOT more useful.  Say you have a preset for B/W that'll kick up the exposure to +0.5 and the blacks to 20.  If you had to do that in the first place just so the image looks 'normal', then applying the preset may not actually do anything for you - some shots may need a +1 exposure adjustment on their own, so that in effect the preset should result in a +1.5 exposure adjustment over the original, whereas if you apply the preset to the current implementation of Virtual Copies, you end up dropping to +0.5 instead of actually going up an additional +0.5
To get around this and to have some consistent results in my images (by using presets), my current workflow is driving me crazy.  I end up importing all my RAWs, adjusting exposure, contrast, etc., and then exporting the files to JPG.  Then I import them all, and apply my presets, but that's so tedious and I have to export twice.
Please, please help and implement this.
Thanks for listening.  I love the product, btw
PS - Another way to get around this would be to allow the option for presets to be relative rather than absolute.  Ex: The B/W preset will do an actual increase of 0.5 to the exposure and an increase of 20 to the blacks.  That would be great too, and might actually be preferrable.

This seems to be a very frequently requested feature, and fo rus it would certainly be the #1 missing functionality.
We use Lightroom to work on large batches of event/wedding photographs, all taken in RAW format.
    1. With current 'absolute' presets, there's no telling what it will do to any given photograph: a "antique photograph" preset will do wildly different thing to a photograph under tungsten, as to a photograph under sunlight or fluorescent or flash.
    2. Similarly, our workflow is interrupted: instead of being able to colour/exposure correct all images and then apply a preset to this _fixed_, 'normalized' version, for consistency of look; we have to play with images one by one, or go to workarounds like export/import: all of which defeat the point of Lightroom as a workflow-enhancing app.

When I'm travelling I import photos onto my laptop's external hard drive and work on the images using virtual copies to develop them. When I get home, I want to import all the photos together with the developed virtual copies fromt the laptop's external HD into LR5 on my PC desktop. But if I use the import button in LR I only get the original photo, not the developed copies. What am I doing wrong?

Since your current editing workflow is based around Virtual Copies there are no actual files containing the edit data. Therefore, you'll need to use the 'Import from another catalog' option ( see File menu).
