Finding ARD access info in logs...
Hello,
Our old network consultant accessed our network and changed all of the passwords causing a great disruption to business. There is criminal legal action under way and we need to gather some evidence of his activities. Is there a particular log in the console that would show ARD access? If not in the console, how do I find it?
Thank you
Most ARD logging information is sent to the system log.

I have ARD 2.2 and I've been trying to figure out how to see whether someone is gaining access or not.
I see on the system.log this kind of showing --
Nov 6 09:30:17 username kernel[0]: ipfw: 5013 Accept TCP 202.125.171.59:2608 70.247.xxx.xxx:5900 in via en0
Nov 6 09:30:17 username kernel[0]: ipfw: 5013 Accept TCP 202.125.171.59:2611 70.247.xxx.xxx:5900 in via en0
["username" replaces the actual user; the "xxx.xxx" replaces original receiving machine's IP number]
Now, the thing is..., when I access it successfully and do whatever I'm going to do, it looks like this. And, whenever some other machine access the ARD port, it looks the same, but I'm not sure if they're really gaining access or just getting to the port. It looks the same with mine and with others.
I don't believe others are gaining access, because it doesn't really look like things are happening -- but how can I tell from the logs what is really going on?
Is there some kind of logging that says that not only has this [other] machine [i.e., computer] gain access to the port [which that is what it appears to be saying on the above log], but has also successfully started "controlling" the computer?
You see, on the one hand, I've gained control of the machine and on the other hand, I don't believe those other "port accesses" have gained access to the machine. But, what's different in the logs that shows me that?

Hi,
Our reports run very slow in SharePoint Integrated mode. I look at the logs and I see that for one report request there are bunch of "Forced due to logging gap" rows. Is it some kind of a configuration issue or is it working as it should. Below
is the full log for one report request. I have no admin experience at all and I am confused what each one in the logs mean. I have made some of them in bold font as I suspect it is some kind of configuration issue there. Could you please help understanding
those logs?

Thank you. That is likely the case as native mode is quicker than SharePoint-integrated.
A couple of things to check, and perhaps change if you can:
1) Make sure the latest SSRS ReportViewer is deployed to the SharePoint WFEs. This does not have to match your SSRS deployment version. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg492257.aspx
for the compatibility table.
2) If possible, move SSRS to the same SharePoint servers that end users interact with (e.g. the "WFEs").
3) Make sure the underlying server hosting SharePoint has C-States disabled (these are Intel C-States, e.g. C1, C2, C3... aka processor sleep states). If the server has any sort of power regulation, make sure it is at maximum performance (rather than some
form of power saving).
4) Make sure the underlying Windows OS has it's Power Management set to Maximum, rather than any sort of power savings.
You can review the execution logs in the Reporting Services database. Take a look at the ExecutionLog3 view. Compare the TimeProcessing (time it takes to process the report) and TimeRendering (time it takes for the processed report to render to the end user).

Office Web Apps - "Could not find trace string in ULS logs" unhealthy?
I have reviewed everything I could find on unhealthy WAC clusters as my problem seems unrelated to certificate or missing components. I've already digested
http://www.wictorwilen.se/office-web-apps-server-2013---machines-are-always-reported-as-unhealthy (Thanks Wictor).
The particular configuration is an Office Web Apps 2013 ([X-OfficeVersion, 15.0.4551.1005]), running on top of Windows Server 2012, configured for http access (SSL offloaded NLB cluster) and finally linked to Exchange 2013, Lync 2013 and SharePoint
2013. Everything works as expected from client side after setting IIS ARR to handle all reverse proxy bits.

I suspect these might be related, but can't seem to find any logical explanation why this should cause the Get-OfficeWebAppsMachine to report HealthStatus of Unhealthy. If related, is there a way to disable this check or remove throttling in a safe
way? Alternatively if this is some coding issue (I've not found any other blog/QA dealing with this particularly) it would be nice to get confirmation of this and potentially a fix/solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!Hi ChristiaanB,
You get this ULS error because you change the log verbosity of the OWA farm. I wrote an article for this on my blog : OWA unhealthy uls issue

Frustrations with file permissions abound, as certain co workers are unable to manually determine their level of permission or who to ask to make changes to files and folders belonging to others. Users of Snow Leopard desktop OS get unhelpful feedback via Finder's Get Info, seeing only the permissions listed for "Everyone" and a statement that "You have custom access". The custom message exists, presumably, because ACL's are employed on the shared volume in an attempt to give managerial control over these volumes to specific users, even if all users can create files and folders on those volumes.
Shared volumes are partitions of an external RAID which are set up as sharepoints on a G5 tower running Server 10.4. Other persons in the office, using machines that are running desktop OS 10.5, can correctly see the assigned Owner and Group permissions (although the "custom access" still shows). This at least lets the 10.5 user know who created a given file or folder, so that they can resolve permissions-restricted issues if they come up (i.e. User A wants to delete file X, but as it was created by User B, A must contact B and have them delete it. In 10.6 it appears that A cannot determine who B is).
I know that ACL's are functioning (enabled on the drive) since we have been making use of ACL-granted write privileges for quite a while (and the custom access seems to be evidence too).
An error I encountered, pertaining to this, is that I used a 10.6 machine to create a working folder, then generated and saved several files in this location. Expected permissions thus would be Owner = me (i.e. the user I was logged in as), R/W, Group = staff, R only, Everyone = R only. However, immediately the permissions shown in Finder / Get Info consisted only of Everyone = R only, with no entry for Owner or Group. Moreover, clicking + to add either an Owner or a Group resulted in error message that I had entered an invalid user or group, even though I typed in correct info (such as trying to add "staff" as a group).Frustrations with file permissions abound, as certain co workers are unable to manually determine their level of permission or who to ask to make changes to files and folders belonging to others. However, immediately the permissions shown in Finder / Get Info consisted only of Everyone = R only, with no entry for Owner or Group. Moreover, clicking + to add either an Owner or a Group resulted in error message that I had entered an invalid user or group, even though I typed in correct info (such as trying to add "staff" as a group). -

Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
Hi there
Trying to patch a new Windows 7 SP1 image within SCCM 2012 SP1, but it's failing.
I've searched for information on the failure messages I am seeing, but although there is a LOT of information online concerning Offline Servicing failures, I can't find anything on the errors I am seeing.
I've tried injecting a single update, five updates and ten updates, no difference, same messages.
We have McAfee Access Protection disabled, as we know Offline Servicing simply won't work if this is running.
In the console, in Schedule Update Status for the image I am trying to update, the following message is shown:
"Failed to find or access the update binaries to be applied on the image."
That sounds as if the process can't find the actual .cab file for any update I've tried to inject, but I don't know why it wouldn't be able to do that, we have Software Updates configured and the .cab files are on the same server.
When I looked at the OfflineServicingMgr.log file, I see the following entries:

I'm not sure what file "Failed to find properties of file 4" is referring to, whether dism.exe, an update or the image itself, but immediately after this message appears the image is unmounted. After that this message shows:
"Completed processing image package PackageID. Status = Failed"
As I say, there's a lot of information available re Offline Servicing but I haven't found anything with these particular messages.
If anyone has encountered this before, I'd appreciate any information you have.
Regards,
John.Hi,
I think file named 'NO_SMS_ON_DRIVE.SMS’ might be causing this issue. If this file is present in logical drives, then please give it a shot one more time after deleting this file from the logical drives.
Due to this file, it might be preventing 'smsexec' service to skip the drive when looking for content. So worth a try!
After deleting this file, you also need to restart 'smsexec' service to reflect the changes. You can also verify from below registry value & ensure that all of your logical drives (specially where SCCMContentLib directory resides) should be listed
over there
'HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\DP\ContentLibUsableDrives'
Hope this will help!

How do I find the FTP info for my site?
I created a site with Wix.com. Since then I've been exploring Dreamweaver, and the author of "Dreamweaver for Dummies" suggets that the best way to make changes to my existing site is to use Dreamweaver's FTP capabailities to download the existing pages. But Wix doesn't support FTP -- so they tell me, and simpleurl.com (where I regeistered my domain name) and which is somehow involved in the posting of my site) can't help either. Here's the Dreamweaver page that I need to fill in.
How do I get this information?Yup, it's basically free, altho you can upgrade a little, as I've done.
And I took
a careful look at the "source" for the pages I've created. That code will
show
nothing of what I've written -- text-wise. It's all stored on the Wix
servers
and accessed with various scripts. You can re-locate your Wix-created site
after 60 days -- not before. So the suggestion I got from the "...Dummies"
book doesn't apply here.
Nonetheless, I'm going to continue to learn how to use Dreamweaver. Maybe
after my 60 days are up I'll wanna move it. Don't know.

How to find out what computers user logged on? (not at the moment but history)
Domain Controller: Windows 2012 R2 - Unfortunately, I don't manage DC but my own OU (computers and users)
I have a user working mid-night shift reporting that he received error message "The group policy client service fail the logon, access denied". He is using multiple PC and he did not remember which PC gave him the error message. How do I find out
which computers he logged on? I have access to my domain OU. I can manage my own Computers and Users objects in my domain (no domain controller in my department)
I searched internet but most of them are finding out which computer user is currently logging on - not the history, thanks.
Thang MoTo fix this error, please follow the steps given below and check if it helps you to resolve the issue :
1. Logon to the machine with a machine administrator account (assuming this issue is with a domain account, if not logon to the machine using another account with administrative privilege).
2. Move the machine to a work-group from domain. (If it was part of one work-group then change it to another one or join a domain.) You could do this through Control Panel\System and Security\System and then Change Settings.
3. Restart the machine and logon with a machine administrator account.
4. Delete your user profile data (or move it a different location) completely from c:\users. "C" in my case is system directory but if you have a different one then use that one.
5. Join the machine back to domain account (or to work-group that the machine was originally joined to), and restart the machine.
6. Logon with your domain account that you were having trouble with. Keep fingers crossed.
If all goes well, you should be logged on.
Coming to the second query, if the user are in DC, you can try our free tool
Lepide last logon reporter that will help you to get the logon details by specifying Domain Name/IP of the Domain Controller, User Name, Common Name and Last Logon Time.

How to find out the info regarding Solaris, server hang or shutdown.
Hi
As I am handling the Solaris 9 Server remotely.
As in last week the server has stopped to respond suddenly, we have tried to ping, ssh which was not working. As ultimately we have asked the Data Centre Team to hard reboot the same, to resolve the issue.
In the same ref I would like to know how we come to know the reason, what caused to reboot the same, i.e . any log file, etc..
I have check /var/adm/messages, but not found any detail for the same.
Thanks
Rajan
INo core files?
No hope for an answer.
As you learned in the other Internet forum.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/solaris-opensolaris-20/how-to-find-out-the-info-regarding-solaris-server-hang-or-shutdown.-621500/
To get such corefiles analyzed,
you would need to use your service contract and log a support case with Sun.
They have the special software tools to do that. -
Providing developers with access to WebLogic logs
Hi all,
I keep getting asked by developers for access to WebLogic logs in restricted test environments. But due to security policies, I can't just create an account for them. In one of my previous roles we just gave developers access to a WeLogic monitor account (read-only), but I find the WebLogic admin console is not user friendly for viewing logs.
To overcome this, I created a really simple WebLogic app that lets the developers access all logs files on the managed servers.
I've blogged a quick how-to here for anyone interested in doing the same: [http://connectionserver.blogspot.com/2009/05/listing-directories-simple-weblogic.html|http://connectionserver.blogspot.com/2009/05/listing-directories-simple-weblogic.html]
Hope it helps someone :)
P.S. Perhaps someone could modify it to restrict access to certain roles.
-Mr Jones. You may run into incompatible class versions issue. Basically you have altogehter 2 different JVMs. One for EJBs (utility framework as you defiined using 1.3). Another JVM is weblogic server using JDK 1.6 where you have Client to remotely access those EJBs methods. Going back, when you generate the client stubs and skeletons, and refer them on your client side, did you ran into any issues like with incompatible class versions.

Can't Find File/Dir info Error 3 :: 30 and (-43)
Please help me with this issue. There's very little previous mention anywhere about this sort of problem.
I'm trying to open an After Effects file that I haven't opened in a while, and the footage I used in the project has since been deleted. When I click it to open it it gives me the message:
After Effects Error: finding file/dir info for file "C://user// yada yada yada....Segment2.aep" file not found (-43)
3 :: 30
All my plugins are still intact and I've tried everything mentioned on the one other thread about 3::30 (which only contained one suggestion).
I really need to access this file as I did a lot of work in there that I can use again and save days of work, even though the footage the file used is gone.
Thank you in advance!
-RaphiOh, well it looked from your initial description that you had possibly imported an After Effects project into another After Effects project.
That being said, you may want to try the very same thing to see if you can salvage you seemingly corrupt project file. Try to create a brand new After Effects project, and import the file that you're trying to open (Segment2.aep) into the new project. If the file isn't corrupted, it should import.
Aside from that, if you have a backup of your old project, I'd suggest trying to restore it. -
Scope of Finder "show item info"
This is to document some apparently inconsistent behavior of the current Finder "show item info" view option: In Finder icon view, view->show view options->"show item info". The purpose is display additional information, including number of files in subfolders, pixel size of still photos, and running time of videos. It only applies to icon view, not list or column view, which is documented.
In "show item info" there is an additional button to "use as defaults". The scope of this option is apparently undocumented and inconsistent. You might expect it would apply from the current folder downward -- sometimes it does and sometimes not. On my 2013 iMac running 10.9.3, it seems to be more consistent on the system drive than an external HFS+. Namely on the internal drive applying it at the root level with "use as defaults" seems to propagate that option downward through the folder tree, but on the external drive (Thunderbolt Promise Pegasus R4 RAID 5) it is less consistent.
In general "show item info" is only fully reliable if invoked separately for each folder. If invoked at a higher folder level, subfolders may or may not display the additional information.
The behavior is not isolated to a single user but happens for any logged-in user on the same machine.
Show item info is probably disabled by default for performance reasons. Obtaining the additional info requires I/O. Once obtained it is apparently cached. There may be other optimizations such as don't enable on sub-folders with more than x files, but this is speculation. Regardless of the cause, the current behavior is inconsistent.
If you want to see the additional "show item info", be prepared to enable it individually for each folder.Folder layout is stored in the hidden '.DS_Store' files within each folder.
I suspect a newly installed OS will have very few .DS_Store files with custom settings so the default can propagate to the child folders. Did you clean install any of these 10.9 systems (erase the disk before install)?
On your external I'd guess that you have been using it for years & have tweaked various views etc. Some folders will be custom, some may not.
To see how many you have you can either use an app like FindAnyFile http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/ to search, or use the find command in Terminal.
find -x / -name .DS_Store
FAF will need admin permission to show inside protected directories.
find will require a sudo to do the same e.g.
sudo find -x / -name .DS_Store
The -x will prevent find crossing onto any other disks (Time Machine disks can take eons to search).
Don't forget to use the /Volumes/VOLUME-NAME for the external disks, wrap it in quotes if you have spaces in the disk name. Drag & drop will auto fill the path with the correct escapes if you drop the disk into Terminal.
You may be tempted to just delete these files but there is additional metadata stored in these files. If you remove them you may lose Spotlight comments & possibly other metadata.
See the sources for links to better explanations…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.DS_Store
Also have a look at http://asepsis.binaryage.com/#about if you want to prevent or purge them.
I'm sure there are lots of ranty posts on here about how this is a lousy system, but it's all we have -
"mail" server access info and messages deleted
Earlier today through an errant instruction, the server access info for Mail 4.6 was inadvertently deleted. This process also deleted all the messages viewable in
Mail's mailboxes: In/Sent/Trash !
From Time Machine, I restored the server access information and the deleted messages!
All of the restored messages now appear as nnnn.emix (as expected) in Home/Mail/POP email address/INBOX.mbox/messages. Similarly for Sent Messages & Deleted Messages.
However, only new messages since restore appear in Mail!!! The restored messages do not appear (although they appear as nnnn.emix in Finder)!
What am I missing here?WOOPS!
My statement above about seeing current messages in Mail is only "partially correct." I find that if I close out Mail... then reopen the program, the messages that were there have disappeared... and, they've similarly disappeared from the nnnn.emix files in Finder!
So... something is clearly amiss! -
