Finding authorization problems in iTunes

Well I was certainly blindsided by this. First, I am the only user on this machine and have never plugged another device into it.
I decided to sync my new 3GS to iTunes. At the end of my 5500 song sync I get the message 30 songs could not be transferred because they weren't authorized. Hmm.
Besides the fact iTunes prevents you from browsing the music library while this dialog is open AND you can't copy, print or read the entire list to go back and check them (stupid, nonfunctional and irritating) they were associated with an email that I never had an iTunes account on!
So of course I try all my known passwords and nothing. I go to the password recovery page and lo and behold, NO ITUNES ACCOUNT associated with that email address. W T H? Apple basically confirmed what I already knew. I never had an iTunes account under that ID, so why are songs associated with it? It shows the songs have been played on my computer in the past.
I even found some songs that were associated with email addresses I have never seen before.
So this brings me to a needed feature in iTunes. How about a menu option for verifying authorization for songs in the library? Since the dialog that pops up is nonfunctional, there needs to be a way to review all the issues that were encountered during sync. As it stands now, you can't even take a screen shot snce the error dialog isn't resizable.

Peter, There is nothing in iTunes that can automatically fill in an empty genre. However, if you make sure that Genre is displayed (if it isn't, go to View > View Options and tick it) you can easily see which ones are empty. Then manually you can add a predefined genre from the dropdown list, or type your own custom genre into the field.

  • Authorization problems on iTunes 10.1.0.56  Help please!

Hi, there's more problems after I downloaded the new iTunes.
I can't authorize my computer. They say I can't connect to iTunes. Everything on my phone is gone. There's this error code (-42408), they say they can't authorize it.

It's your WIndows 7 permissions on the itunes media folder.
Give yourself full control & ownership of it, and all its subcontainer folder.
This webpage has screenshots of the security settings I'm talking about.

You need to restart itunes for it to read the new permission settings.

  • Authorization problem with iTunes 6.0 in iMovie

I just upgraded to iTunes 6.0. I am able to play my purchased music in iTunes. When I attempt to play iMovies (QT 7.0.1), I am asked to authorize the song in iTunes. The iTunes opens up but the computer hangs after I put in my authorization data. Is there a fix for this. If not, should I downgrade to a lower version of iTunes in which this problem did not occur?

Try the steps in this Apple document:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300456
I would also try in iTunes to de-authorize the computer (under Advanced menu) and then reauthorizing it. It almost sounds like there's a problem with the iTMS servers.

  • Authorization Problems with iTunes 7.1 and Vista

I'm running Windows Vista Business edition. Any time I try to play a purchased song, I get prompted that "you've already got 5 computers authorized to play this", but when I check my actual account settings, it says I've only got 3 computers our of 5 authorized (which is correct). I've tried updating to the latest version of iTunes (7.1) and it didn't help. I tried to run the "fix the seurity permissions issue in Vista" application that Apple released and it doesn't even appear to run (gives me the EULA, I hit 'accept' and it just closes the window).
Iv'e checked all of the standard issues that I've seen bandied about. Yes, I'm using my administrator account (my only account on the machine is my admin acct.). I've tried right clicking and launching it as an admin (just in case..)...no change. Songs that I have purchased since upgrading to Vista work just fine and will play. Anything purchased before the upgrade WILL NOT WORK.
I'm just kind of frustrated as other people have mentioned as well. I've got many many songs that I cannot listen to at all due to this issue. Plus to be honest, I'm afraid to plug in my iPod to update it. I don't want it to "update" and then all of a sudden I can't even play the songs from the iPod either. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate it as it is getting a bit tiring.
    Thanks in advance.

Hey there - It sounds like you have songs from more than one account in your library.
When you try to play a song that needs to be authorized it'll have the account ID that it was purchased with listed in the pop-up window (where you enter your password).
This is the important part: Make sure that the account ID that the song asks you for is the ID that you login to the iTunes store with when you check how many authorizations you have left.
    Hope this helps!

In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it. Or turn on Windows 7 and 8 iTunes menus: iTunes- Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7.
More On De-authorizing Computers (contributed by user John Galt)
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.

If you can't access the App Store from the Apple menu, Dock, or Applications folder installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will reinstall the App Store for you.
It's ok to do this even you are already running v10.6.8.
