Finding Corrupt files

My spotlight does not work in my account, but works in other accounts, how do I find the corrupt files?

Is systemuiserver.plst related to spotlight? I noticed it in the activity monitor.
Also I checked on a different MacBookPro and it did not have a com.apple.spotlight.plst why is that? why do I have it?
That MBP is just a little newer like 2-3 months than mine.

How do I find corrupt file that would be disallowing proper exporting of movie?

I usually start by exporting to AME (as opposed to encoding "in-process" by clicking Export in the Export Settings dialog). Then watch the preview in AME's Encoding panel to see where it chokes. Adding an adjustment layer over the whole sequence with the Timecode effect applied--and scaled up to full frame width--can really help isolate the location.
That approach can be a pain in cases where it chugs away for a long time before encoding fails. In those cases, I use a divide-and-conquer approach:
Is it the video or the audio?: Disable all video tracks and encode. Then re-enable the video and mute all audio tracks
Where in the timeline is the problem: Export the first half, then the second half (using In/Out Points). Then keep dividing the half that fails until you've narrowed it down to a relative handful of clips.

  • How to find corrupted files

With my 2 yr old macbook, I cannot update my recently purchased iphone 4 when an ipdate is available. I get message: "...device isn't eligble for requested rebuild." I have worked with Apple store Genius bar staff 4 times with no sucess.  Latest attempt was to erase HD, reinstall OS X, and only reinstall itunesin orde to test the update feature.  In this scenario, with only itunes on the macbook, the update is successful.  However, after  I drag and dropped many, but not all, of my programs and files from the saved data on external HD back onto the macbook, and tried an update on a different iphone 4 (in our family plan), same problem.  So I guess somewhere in what I transferred back onto  the macbook is a bad file.  I suppose I could go through the tedious process of transferring one program/file at a time onto the macbook, then trying the update again, but I can't do an update after each transfer because there is no new update to download, as they come out only every so often.
Is there a program that can scan the external HD to find bad/corrupted files?  I have Spring cleaning and Drive Genius, neither of which seem to have the features to do such a scan (they do have disk scan, which I have run, along with Apple's Tech Tool, and all such scan operations have show no problems)
(to complicate this, this apparent bad file on this macbook likely came from my white intel based iMac.  I first discovered this "updating of the iphone 4 problem" on the imac.  When we bought the macbook, we bought one to one and had the Apple store do a complete transfer from the imac to the macbook in its first time set up.  I purchased the iphone 4 in Sep 2010 and first tried an update in Nov 2010, which failed.  I have been back to the Apple Genius bar 5 times since then with this problem.  During one of those visits, Genius suggested trying to do just the update of my iphone 4 from the macbook, and that is when we discovered the macbook had the same problem.  So this bad file likely was transferred to the macbook in that initial set up transfer.  Furthermore, this macbook is still under AppleCare, yet that does not seem to mean anything to the Genius Bar.  Tomorrow I will call applecare about this, but in the meantime, if anyone out there has a clue, I'm much obliged.

I didn't know of this console feature.  I see Mozy.backup doing something.  I had tried Mozy on this imac a long time ago and stopped using it, and I thought I had deleted it.  When I just now searched for mozy, all I get is .pdf file.  Do you think this could be the problem and how would I get totally rid of mozy files?  Thanks

  • How to find corrupted file causing problem with FCP?

I couldn't use Log and Transfer of FCP 7.0.3 for AVCHD from Canon Vixia.
By starting from different user account Log and Transfer worked which means I have a corrupted file in the directory of original user account causing the error of Log and Transfer. What will be the easiest way to find the corrupted file?
    Milan

If the new user acct test allows you to work with the software, it usually means a dead pref file. The easiest way to deal with these issues is to run Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager software (free) to delete the preference files in FCP.
Open it up and look under the FCP settings in the Advanced tab. It gives you the option of selectively deleteing the various pref files associated with the app.
First back up all your FCP prefs then start deleting them one by one. Once you figure out which one is the problem, restore all the others.

  • Finding corrupt file in an Windows 8.1 Update installation

    Hi
I would like to know if, with
Windows 8.1 Update, there is a
way to know if its installation has
    some of its corrupt file?
    Thanks
    Bye
    Balubeto

Usually after update been download, it will be checked for file integrity before it install and if there is any error it will notify you and after installation, it will also notify you if something went wrong.
However, you may run sfc /scannow command to check whether your Windows files are corrupted or not.
You should run the comm and in command prompt as administrator.
    In which Windows mode is
    better to run this command?
    Thanks

  • Program to find corrupt files?

Can anyone recommend a program that locates corrupt/problem files on an external HD? Thanks in advance.

There are no such animals. What's one file's corruption is another's perfection. And, if are referring to corrupted directories the default tool is Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. There are utilities that can try to detect a problem file such as Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro, but as for detecting whether a file is a problem or not that's not too likely.

  • How do I find corrupt file?

Recently a huge FCP project will not open. I just found out that it opens just fine when my media drive is not attached. I have trashed all my render files, cache files, settings/pref files, ran disk utilities, etc.
I believe it's one of my video/audio files. How do I find out which one it is?
    Thanks in advance!

Interesting... I did what X suggested. However, I reconnected a few at a time since it would take an entire day. One reference movie file was acting weird, so I connected everything but that one. I saved a new file and quit. I attempted to open and started having the same problems, it would crash before totally open.
So I opened the original and connected all the media but my .jpg, .tif and .png files. Basically all my image files. Saved a new FCP project file. Quit FCP. The reopened the new FCP project file and wha lah, it opened. So it is in fact one of the image files. Now I just have to find out what file is doing it.
Thanks guys for your help. I'll report back one more time when I've found the specific file that's causing the problem.

I loaded all my backed up files onto the new computer (also a mac), from my airport extreme computer backup (also a mac product) and the next time I went to backup my iphone, it clearly says in the itunes window (where it would usually tell you your last backup date) that this phone had NEVER been backed up up on this computer. That would be fine with me and I would gladly create a new backup from what was on my phone currently except....When I click the backup button, it gives me the "could not back up the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iphone. Delete the back up for this iphone, then try again" error message. I have followed every instruction of how to go about deleting these backups. I deleted every iPhone related backup through iTunes. Then I tried to find the files on the computer's hard drive outside of iTunes, but I swear there is no MobileSync folder on my computer. At least it's not at the path that is always given in every suggested solution.
I did create a separate user account (on the same computer) and was able to backup my phone through that. I don't know what that means, if anything, but I'd like my iphone to work with MY user account...
I've had a really difficult time finding the answer to this question online, so any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

i have figured it out, what you have to do is to restore your phone back to factory settings:
http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yBBiMy3Y6Q - youtube video to show you how incase you dont know
and then set up your phone as a NEW IPHONE instead of using iCloud
then plug it into iTunes - then i clicked on the iCloud thing to restore my new phone,   and it should work, mine does hope this helps

  • How do I find a corrupt file on my iPod Classic?

I had an iPod Classic which started rebooting itself as I would navigate the menu.  At the suggestion of a friend I mailed it to a non-Apple repair shop in Kansas City.  I paid $160 for them to install a new hard drive and it was returned to me, but the problem was still happening.  The repair shop claimed that I must have a corrupt file on my device causing the issue.  My 2nd course of action was to bring it to an Apple store.  They replaced the iPod Classic with a new one for $130.  (I should have gone to them in the first place.)  Brought the new device home yesterday and resynched it.  Tested it out for the first time and immediately it rebooted as I was navigating the menu system.  This is depressing. Now I am thinking the first repair shop may have been right.  But on a 160 GB hard drive that is almost full, how do I find the file(s) that are causing the problem?

In doing some research on the internet I found someone suggest that complicated playlists may be the culprit.  The person said he removed his complicated playlists and the problem went away.  I am going to try removing all my playlists and see what happens.

  • How do I find a corrupted file in a backup folder on my computer?

I have recently had to replace the battery in my iphone, but before doing so, I had backed up the phone about 3 times, all saying they were successful.  And then I had erased the phone(before I realised the battery was the problem).  However when I went back to restore from the backup, it says that it cannot be restored because the backup is corrupt.  I read on one site that sometimes if a phone turns off or disconnects while backing, it might cause a corrupt file, and I think that's exactly what my phone did due to the battery issues.  The big question is, is it only specific files inside the backup folder that are corrupt?  And how do I find out which files they are?  Please help.

    Hi
This can be an issue on other end ( server end ) as export to HTML works fine so Muse is exporting the files correctly but while exporting to external server if it stuck then we should check on server side if there is any problem related to specific file upload.
As a workaround, you can use any FTP client and then upload the exported html files to root location.
    Thanks,
    Sanjit

  • Is there an ap for finding/deleting corrupt files on OS X 10.7?

I seem to have a corrupt file(s) which cause my MacBook Pro to freeze inexplicably (and randomly) upon start-up. I've been told that this is a symptom of having a corrupt file.
Is there an an for finding/deleting corrupt files on OS X 10.7?
I'm pretty much bound to my computer and simply don't have the time to go through it manually.
    Thank you.

This is an old post and I am not the person who posted the original query, but I ran your terminal diagnostic and am hoping you are still attending to this forum. I have a mid 2011 macbook Air 11", 256 GB SSD, 1.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB  1333 MHz DDR3, Mac OS X v. 10.7.5 Lion. I have had various problems in my user homefolder for a while. I have gone through quite a few other troubleshooting and fixing steps, the most extensive following a posting here "Step by Step to fix your mac" by ds store in the Apple forums. These steps helped a lot. I did remove some 3rd party software as part of this process.
My computer is running well in general now, but one thing that has been a recurring problem is problems with move/cut-paste. I researched this online and ACL's being present where they're not supposed to be seems to be an issue. I have used terminal commands to remove ACL's, used Onyx to repair user permissions, rebooted with command-r to reset password screen and reset user permissions. They all help, but then a some point later on the problem recurs. When I run repair disk permissions with either disk utility or onyx I always get this message:
    Repairing permissions for “maggieairHD”
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
ACL found but not expected on “Users”
    Repaired “Users”
    Permissions repair complete
This ALWAYS comes up, even if I run it immediately after running it and haven't done anything else on the computer in between.
I created another user and did not have the same problems I was having at the time with some programs, although I haven't used it that much to be able to really compare. The home folder permissions repair in Onyx comes out the same in that user, though.
Here are my results from your diagnostic terminal commands:

    NoSleep, iTunesHelper, Caffeine, Dropbox
    Maggies-MacBook-Air:~ maggieair$
I have removed NoSleep, Caffeine, itunesHelper and Dropbox from login items before and didn't notice any difference, so I put them back. Some of these I know I don't want, like rim/blackberry, adobe AIR. Skype has never worked consistently on this computer. I don't use most of these Services, and I know I had trouble with some that were not compatible with Lion before. I am not using Parallels much now, have been thinking about taking it off as it uses a chunk of my SSD. But I don't feel confident about getting rid of .frameworks etc safely.
I am glad to remove anything I don't use if I know how to do it safely. I am willing to remove anything I do use if it's necessary, but obviously would prefer to find a way to keep things that I find helpful.
    I appreciate any suggestions!

  • Corrupted files with automatic red finder tags! :(

    Hello,
it's for some time that my mac corrupts files, particularly those videos stored on various hard disk randomly. Each file has a red finder tags and I am not able to open them though I see it size that seems ok...I tried to check hard disk but this not solve problems...
    Sorry for my bad english...

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I have today encountered a problem opening old Keynote presentations on my new iMac running Leopard. It cannot open any of the old presentations on my machine because it says they are damaged.
I also could not open an old Pages file because it says the file is corrupt and there was a .xml missing. I later managed to open this by searching for it directly through the application "Open" command and following the search path. It then gave the usual " This was created by a previous version of Pages..." and the Save as warning, but it did open when I went this route. (I have now saved this document as Pages 08 and all is well).
There seems to be a bug in the iWork '08 suite when it comes to older documents.

  • Where can I find this corrupt file? I can't find it anywhere.

It's driving me nuts because I keep seeing it whenever I run my anti-virus scan. Whenever I search for the thing, I can't seem to find it anywhere. This can't be possible. I don't know if I need to give you my exact username for this computer, but as a stand-in for that, I'll just type [ANONYMOUS]. The corrupt file is named as follows-
    /Users/.[ANONYMOUS]/[ANONYMOUS].sparsebundle/bands/33f
Is there any idea where I can find this?
And if possible, is there a way to recover it or do I just have to delete it? I've found a couple of corrupted google chrome files that I've taken care of so far.
One last question. Is this file's corruption a symptom of hacking? It's a long story. Just curious...

Looked at what they do and how they do it, antivirus tools are arguably difficult to distinguish from the malware itself, and problems with the tools can sometimes manifest themselves with corruptions and crashes.
While thomas_r. points to the mv rename command (which will work — just be very careful to include exactly two spaces in that entire command, don't add additional spaces within the directory names), that rename operation might mess up the antivirus — I'm guessing that file is part of that package — and I'd start out with something like the following commands to look around at that .yourshortname directory:
    ls -aled@ /Users/.yourshortname
    ls -ale@ /Users/.yourshortname
The first looks at the settings and attributes of the directory file itself, and the second looks at the settings and attributes of any files stored in the directory.
If you're encountering corrupt files, that can imply a software or hardware problem is lurking.  As a first step, I'd remove the antivirus tools — again, these tools are very close to being malware, in terms of what can happen when they go wrong — and see if the corruptions persist.  I'd also verify you have current backups at all times, on the off chance that this is a hardware problem — that's your path back from both software and hardware errors.  A failing disk can also cause file corruptions, and that doesn't usually end well.
Full disclosure: I'm somewhat skeptical around the value of antivirus on OS X for most users.  Antivirus chews up a non-trivial amount of resources and can itself cause problems and false positives.   There are very few bits of malware around that are specifically targetting OS X, and shuting off or removing or plugin-blocking Adobe Flash Player and Oracle Java, and disabling features such as Safari's habit of automatically opening safe downloads, then the integrated features of Gatekeeper and XProtect and OS X security should keep you fairly secure.  This all assuming you're reasonably skeptical around what you click on and what packages you install and particularly if you're not off looking to load cracked software from the torrents, and are not installing and running stuff (anything that you didn't go looking for yourself) found from random places around the 'net or from random mail messages sent to you.  Even the best antivirus around isn't entirely proof against any of those sorts of attacks, either.  If you do decide to use antivirus (and that's entirely your call), then please do not assume it will effectively protect you; you'll still want to avoid loading anything that might reasonably be malware.  Expect it to toss false positives, and to potentially cause flaky behavior and — as has happened with various malware tools, and sometimes successfully — to itself be targeted for attack or used as a backdoor.
