Finding duplicate files

Can anyone recommend a good shareware or freeware app to find and delete duplicate (or triplicate or sextuplicate) files on a hard drive running Snow Leopard?

Actually, I was simply trying to save myself time by asking if anyone could recommend a specific one. It's a common method in the online community and one that, in the past, has proven fruitful for me. I don't believe I had asked anyone "to do that for" me. On this thread, cwog posted a recommendation for TidyUp, which I downloaded and from which I had good results. Next time you're looking for an app, try asking for a recommendation here. I think you'll find that people will help you out.

  • How to find duplicate files in Finder with Automator or Apple ScriptEditor

Can anyone tell me how to find duplicate files in Finder with Automator or Apple ScriptEditor.

D'oh!  It's actually fairly easy - I just right clicked on the file, Get Info, Artwork tab, then dragged the picture to the desktop, from where I can do what I like with it.  Never mind, nothing to see here, carry on.

  • Find duplicate files?

Is there an easy way to find duplicate files built into Lion? I use Dupe Guru  but it doesn't find all the duplicates. Any suggestions?

There is no such utility built-into OS X. Besides Dupe Guru you might try Gemini or Twins - both available through the Mac App Store.

  • How do I find duplicate files?

I am guessing this is a simple answer, and I apologize for not knowing it, but I want to ask. What's the easiest and best way to see if you have duplicate files?
I am reorganizing a couple very big picture folders into smaller subfolders and am sure there are dupes amongst the big folders I am moving them from. Manually moving specific pics to specific small folders, and keep running into dupes. Is there a way to see dupes ahead of time so I can eliminate them?

Not directly but there are several third-party shareware utilities that locate duplicates. You'll find them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • JUST finding duplicate files/folders

Yes, I did my research.  Solutions are dated or otherwise un-satisfactory.  Does anyone know of a CURRENT app. that will find duplicte files and folders (preferably by name, not necessarily size) and list them without immediately sending something to the trash?  What I need it for is this:  I have an external hard drive that I've manually backed things up to over the years, and there are different "versions" of the same files.  I want to get rid of the older ones and keep the most updated ones.  Does that make sense?  If you need more info, ask.  Anybody got an idea?

Yeah, unfortunately that was how the action was programmed - to only accept two folders to compare at a time.
Honestly, I re-reviewed your earlier posts, and what you want is the most recent version of the files right?
As you have 4 folders, then what I think you should do is the following:
    1. First select the first two folders and run the below workflow:
What this will do is synch both of them so that the most recent files are there. Then all you have to do is delete one of them as they will be DUPLICATES.
    2. Then select the OTHER TWO FOLDERS with the same workflow above and sync them. Then delete one of the folders.
    3. Now you only have two folders left to sync. Run the workflow on those two folders and delete one of them.
There you go, and you will end up with ONE folder that has all the most recent versions of the files.
You should test it first, but it should work.
    Good luck.

  • Finding duplicate file names

    Hello
How can I find the duplicate file names in database?
    select substr( file_name , instr (file_name, '/',-1)+1) from dba_data_files;
    users.dbf01
    tools.dbf01
    tools.dbf02
..What I want to find is, I want to find the duplicate file names.
    ie:
    users.dbf01
    users.dbf01
    sysaux.dbf02
    sysaux.dbf02
    ..

Using the query you posted above...
    select count(*), the_file_name
    from
       select
          substr( file_name , instr (file_name, '/',-1)+1) as the_file_name
       from dba_data_files
    group by the_file_name
having count(*) > 1;Ought to do it.

  • HT1338 I want to find duplicate files..

    Hello,
When i search with Spotlight for files ending in " 1.m4a" to locate duplicates, it shows results; but when i click on 'show all files in finder', finder shows no files..
Am i missing something? I just want to remove the duplicates...
I have a brand new i7 mac mini, with a 2tb external HDD Mac formatted.

While deleting from a search is perhaps not the best way to remove duplciate files as it doesnt provide a lot of obvious info about where the files came from, you should be able to perform the same search in the Finder using the search bar at the top of any Finder window, and then selecting to search "This Mac" at the top of the window.

  • Finding duplicate files over 5MB anywhere

is there a way to find and pair up files (images) on a hard drive over a certain size.
I have many image files and many duplicates of these files.
I'd like to find all the duplicates (same files size and name) and see there locations side by side so that i can delete the unnecessary copies.
what can i do to do this easily?

I guess so. Maybe someone made an automator script or an apple script. You might post a request in their forums. I think a smart folder won't do the job as it only lists tagged files without giving relationships. Or am I wrong?
I tried GC's function serveral times and it was very satisfying.

  • Find duplicate files across a few drives

Is there a good utility for this? We have too many versions of things laying around.

You can probably do this on Automator but there are other applications/scripts out there that can probably do the job better. You might want to check out http://webscripts.softpedia.com/script/File-Management-Perl/Dupinator-19031.html or http://www.zizasoft.com/products/zsDuplicateHunter/index.shtml I haven't tried either one yet but both seem to have gotten some buzz. I think the first one is free. The second has a trial period and starts at $19.95.

  • Duplicate File Finder

Wondering if anyone knows of a good software application (and has some experience using it) that finds duplicate files on my computer, and/or any of my network drives and other computers on the network. I'm hoping I can find something that will search all my drives and find all the files by the same name and size, or even duplicate files when some may have been renamed. I've googled it, and found some Windows utilities that claim to do this, but see nothing for the Mac. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I have an iMac, a Macbook and a Windows (Vista) computer on my wireless network, using a 1TB Time Capsule with 2 Lacie 500GB HDDs attached to it. Thanks in advance.

At the moment I will suggest "Spring Cleaning" v.10 from Smith Micro http://www.smithmicro.com/default.tpl?group=product_full&sku=SCM10XX
It will find all the duplicate files, even the ones that were renamed.
I use this program also to find and remove all my empty folders.
Very handy for consolidating all your backup files and archives. Batch file renaming is also supported and much more other power features.
If there are any other similar tools out there please post it here.

  • Finding Erasing Duplicate Files

Is There a Way to search your Hard Drive find duplicate files?

PaulScheer, Welcome to the discussion area!
Be careful with this... there are some files in system level directories that have the same name as files in your user directory. Although the names are the same they are not the same file. For example the contents of /Library and /Users/username/Library may look similar but they aren't duplicate files.

  • To extract duplicate files from a system

sir, i m working on project to find duplicate files from a system . can any one give me some idea how should I start ?

I have written one in Java and in Python.
My approach was to take the SHA1 hash of each file and use this as the key in a map with the file name being the value.
I traverse the file system building the hash mapping as I go along. When I find a SHA1 hash that is already in the map I add the pair of associated file names to a list of possible duplicate files.
After I have traversed the set of files I check all the potential duplicates for equality.
