Finding Duplicate Photos Automatically in the Libary

Hi, just converted from Windows to mac this Xmas and treated myself to a G5 iMac. I have transferred my pics from my windows laptop into iphoto libary but find i have quite a few duplicates one way or another. I want to search through automaticaly and get rid of the copies without having to manualy search through the libary. is this possible?

Hi Nobbydog,
the best way would be to keyword all your images. Then use the keyword pane to show all photos with the same keyword. It will be easy to spot duplicates this way.
there is a program called iPhoto diet, but I am not sure if it would work in your situation. You could try and see if it would.
To get back some of the space your iPhoto Library is taking up on your hard drive you can use http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~fuhrer/personal/freestuff/iphotodiet/iPhoto Diet
Quoted from the web site:
iPhoto Diet is a utility that helps to slim down your iPhoto library by manipulating your photos in the following ways:
*eliminate duplicate photos created internally by iPhoto or imported by yourself
*remove iPhoto's backups of rotated or modified photos
*strip the thumbnail icons of your photos
*remove thumbnail photos that have become mixed up with your high resolution photos
*identify photos which have not been added to albums
weed out unnecessary folders and files from the library
and more!
I suggest you read through the entire page because it expalins what iPhoto does and how it does it.
If you say to yourself "I can go through the originals folders right in the Finder and get rid of the images I no longer want" then you need to read On iPhoto 5, Originals, and GUI Scripting which will explain what happens if you do it yourself.

  • How can I find duplicate photos without going through all 5000  one at a time?

How can I find duplicate photos withough going through all 5000 one by one?  I have numerous duplications and used to be able to click on Edit and Find Duplicates and could clean up all the duplicates easily.  Now that option is gone.  I still have lots to delete.

I do backup everything using Carbonite. Please don't tell me it is bad, too :-)  Also, especially with photo files, I do have other backups of those I am concerned about. Probably not the best in the world, but a log better than many people who I know about.
Again, I really have not seen any problems with MacKeeper.  I imagine that if people do not read and follow instructions, they could have problems. For example, it is possible to scan all your files and see them in order of size. If you start deleting things, without knowing what you're deleting, you could cause trouble. Even when the computer scans for so-called junk files, you can look at them and decide for yourself if they are truly junk. I've never seen any that were not.
So, I will look at the complaints anyway to see them. I am open to change, although I hope I do not need to drop Mackeeper as it does things like keeping tracking of applications updates that I need. Please note that I definitely am not a MacKeeper employee or anything close. Just using it and happy with the the results.
I did download the recommend file for finding photo dupes and ran it.  There were very few duplicates, in any case, As I said before, the MacKeeper dupe finder was very slow when I ran it over ALL my files. That was a year ago and it did find many non-text dupes.

How do i find duplicate photos in my iPhoto library?

These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • Can iPhoto find Duplicate Photos

Can iPhoto find Duplicate Photos like iView Media can? I don't mean finding duplicate names, but rather analyzing the actual photo itself and finding doubles.
Strangly enough, this is one of the remaining reasons for me needing to use iView for some tasks.

No, iPhoto hasn't this functionality. It would be a nice feature though.

  • Can Lightroom Find Duplicate Photos?

    Fellow Forum Members,
Does the latest version of Lightroom have the capability to find duplicate photos?  I have a bunch of JPGs and no desire to go through all of them to find duplicates.  If Lightroom can not find duplicated,  can anyone out there please recommend an app that is good at finding duplicate photos or near duplicate photos.  Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I cannot recommend "lightroom-plugins.com".  I purchased the software, tried the registration key and it still ran in demo mode.  After 48 hours, still no response from customer support.  The site appears to be inactive.
I did find a free version:

  • PSE how to have photo automatically resize the a 12 X 12 background document

I was told that when you drag a photo onto a 12x12 document it will automatically resize to the 12 x 12. When I do it in PSE the photo is small...and asking me to transform it. Is this different within these two programs or is there a work around in PSE. I had a friend try it in her photoshop program and the image wasn't distorted at all...Didn't appear huge, like if I transform it.

Both are set at 300....it's a very small picture... 4x3 my online friend uses CS5 and said it automatically changed it to the 12x12 blank document when she dragged it on...I did that but it gets very large and blurry...I studied about smart objects and used place to open photo and then tried to resize it....she clipped a mask watercolor underneath to give it emphasis... she then tilted the whole picture.she's out of town for the moment...I was trying to figure out what she did...for the life of me I can't get mine to resize to the 12 x 12....it expands larger than hers when I try.

When an image is added to a document, the incoming image is scaled to the resolution of the target document.  Make sure the resolution is the same for both, or simply use the Move tool on the pasted image to resize it to suit.  The incoming photo is never resized automatically to the target document's dimension. • How do I find duplicate photos in iPhoto

I have so many duplicates in iPhoto that my library files is way too large by thousands of photos. I need to find a way to weed out duplicate photos. Anyone know how?
    Thanks,
    Barb

Where are you seeing these duplicates?  If you're seeing them from withing the iPhoto window then you can use one of the apps listed below.
If you're seeing those "duplicate" files via the Finder then you don't have duplicates.  iPhoto will have a minimum of 2 files in it's lbrary for each file imported.  So don't relay on what you see via the Finder regarding duplicates in the iPhoto library.

  • Quickest way to find duplicate photos on mac?

So I'm trying to clean up my macbook and I have a ton of duplicate photos. It would take me days to go through all my photos manually, so I am wondering if there is a way to find all duplicates? Iphoto really messes up the ability to search for a photo (i have tried many times to search my mac for a photo that is in iphoto, and nothing comes up, why?!). So i have no way of knowing which of my photos in iphoto are already saved in other photo folders i have on my computer.
Is there software that can make this process easier?

Use a third party software such as dupeGuru:

  • Finding duplicate photos to delete

I want to delete duplicate photos in iphoto. I have too many to just delete individual ones, so want to know if there is a way to get the Mac to search the hard drive to find libraries with the same file reference. The problem is that I have created multiple folder names at different times for my collection of photos. I want to be sure that i'm not deleting the primary photo and just keeping a thumbnail or similar.

    1. Under no circumstances search the hard drive or use the Finder to delete images in an iPhoto Library. If you do you will trash the Library.
    2. For dealing with duplicates in iPhoto check out Duplicate Annihilator
There is no way to check for duplicates across libraries - i.e files that are in Library A and Library B. You could try use the paid version ($20) of iPhoto Library Manager to merge the libraries and set it to not add duplicates

  • Duplicate photos stay with the original - so why does iPhoto 6 lose position?

This may just be a quirk of iPhoto 6 and fixed in a later version?
When I duplicate a photo, unbelievably iPhoto 6 returns me to the TOP of my Library (thousands of pictures). I then have to spend some ttime scrolling down until I'm back at the picture, only to find that iPhoto has placed the two pictures side by side! So why on earth does iPhoto take me about as far away as it can, from the two pictures?
(The same thing happens after I've imported photos ... as soon as I eject the camera or switch it off to save battery.)
iTunes doesn't do this when you duplicate (convert) a song. Finder lets you duplicate a file but doesn't then scroll you to the top of the folder. What, if any, is the logic?

How can I change or cancel this feature
    You can't.
Does anybody have an idea or similiar expierence.
    Everybody does.
iPhoto is not just an image viewer, but is a Database with a built-in image viewer, version control and lightweight editing.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way. This also includes photos that have been auto-rotated by your camera.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
So each element is there for a reason and there is no actual duplication.
The notion of version control (the ability to revert to an Original) is central to the philosophy of the application, and if you don't want the feature, then the application may not be for you. There are many image viewers available.

  • Finding duplicate photos

    Hello everyone.
Is there a facility in OSX, perhaps Automator that could help me find on my harddrive duplicate photos. I am aware of 'photo diet' for iPhoto but I was hoping for something many times quicker.
I have around 8000 images, I estimate 20% are duplicates.
Is there no way I can determine this from Exif Data then have a process remove one of each file?
    Many thanks.

A thought of what might be a fast approach to this problem if you are using iPhoto 5 is to locate files by name. Be sure the Info button in the bottom let is depressed so you can verify both photos are the same resolution which are side by side. Many times the thumbnails will have the same name as the original, and you wouldn't want to be left with only the thumbnails. Once you have found certain common names to categorize photos by, use the keywords in the iPhoto preferences to catalog the photos by keywords. Drag photos you want to have the same keyword over the keyword in the keyword panel which is activated through the key icon in the bottom left. Then when you want to view only photos of a certain keyword, just click on that keyword in the panel. Try to think through it like a family tree, and you should be able to eliminate the duplicates easily.
