Finding iPhoto stored pics using Finder

Thanks to all in advance for what is probaby a simple answer / solution.
In June, I upgraded everything in order to be "cloud" compliant. This included iLife so I am running iPhoto '11. Prior to this upgrade, I was able to locate photos with Finder by clicking on "Photos" --> "Original" (or modified) --> The year --> FilmStrip name. Any new download from the camera would be placed in that fashion. That made it easy for me to locate photographs to attach to emails when not using Apple's Mail (Web-based hotmail).
Since I upgraded, I can follow the same string except the new iPhoto saves it differently after the "the year" portion of the search. It gives it an arbitrary number (as near as I can figure), then subfiles with other arbitrary numbers and then a longer string which I presume is time / date stamping. I have included screen shots  below so that my inadequate explanation  makes more sense. You can see the pics stored prior to the upgrade easily recognizable from FilmStrip folders.
My question is: why? Is there a way to change how the files are stored? Basically reverting back to the utterly easy to understand way that makes Apple such a wonderful tool for me!
I also apologize in advance if this has been asked before. I tried a number of search strings to locate something like this and it might show my naivete in not being able to find the solution to my own problem.
Cheers,
-Tod

Why? Because they decided to, really. You must have updated from v6 or earlier. iPhoto now uses large amounts of virtualisation in its operations.
But it doesn’t matter - and never did.
Directly accessing the photos via the Finder is not supported - nor has it ever been. Basically, the iPhoto Library has no user serviceable parts within it.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    All of the above are a: a whole lost faster and b: a whole lot safer than rooting around in the old folders of the iPhoto Library   Regards  TD

  • How do I find out the Version of iPhoto I am using and how do I update it?

    I am unable to open iPhoto on my Mac using OSX Version 10.6.8.  I do not know what version of iPhoto I have because I don't know where to locate that information.  However, I suspect that the iPhoto will no longer open because it needs to be updated.  When I ask my computer to do updates, it doesn't recommend an update for the iPhoto.  When I click on iPhoto all I get is the spinning icon like it is trying to retrieve the data, but can't.  Thank you for your suggestions.

    Open up the /Applications/ folder under your boot volume. Put the Finder window into list mode, CMD+J, and enable version. That should tell you the version that's installed. Alternatively, select the iPhoto icon and use CMD+I.

    When using photoshop elements as editor in iPhoto the pic does not show up when PS opens

    Ralph9430 offers a good suggestion.  But you may need to do this before taking his advice:
    Check in iPhoto's Preferences (which you can open from the iPhoto menu).  Look in General, and make sure "Connecting Camera Opens" is set to "Image Capture").
    If it is set to "iPhoto", you won't be able to get to Image Capture easily.

  • IPhoto - sharing pics with other - nonApple software programs, and....

    I’m a new Mac user. I spent hours importing 20,000 + photo into iPhoto. These were imported by opening iPhoto, and doing a drag/drop from external hard drive. These files appear to be saved to 2 locations - File>Reveal in Finder> modified or Reveal in Finder>Original. Looking at the file details these files appear to be located in the following directory structure - /Users/MyName/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2010/11/15/20101115-183833. This appears to be some type of hidden directory structure, as is it not directly viewable in “Finder”. You have to click on a photo and chase the path backwards to find out where the photo’s are stored.
    Two questions:
    First: since these files are in a hidden directory structure, how can I see them with third party products like photoshop? I can you the File>Import command, as I can’t navigate to the directory structure where the photos are located. How can I change this.
    Second: Since each picture appears to be stored on two separate locations -
    File>Reveal>modified
    File>Reveal>Original
    Isn’t this a huge waist of space. Using twice as much space for each file on. I have a terabyte drive, but this could almost reduce my potential use by 50%.

    you do not ever go into the iphoto library so there is no need to know or understand the iPhoto relational database structure
    For editing you can set any editor as the external editor in the iPhoto preferences and use it to edit
    For other access you use the media browser in the lower left hand corner of the open/attach/upload window - click here for a discussion on the many correct and safe ways to access your iPhoto library photos.

    No - there are no duplications in iPhoto - there are different versions - iPhoto is a DAM (Digital Asset Manager) and one of the tenants of DAMs is to always keep the original - the digital negative. By keeping the original iPhoto can at anytime revert to it and it is the basis of iPhoto's lossless editing.
    The original folder holds -- The Original
    If any change is made to the photo then the modified version is in -- The modified folder

  • Weird Problem calling Stored Procedure using JDBC

    Scenario is..
    I have J2EE application and calling stored procedure using JDBC.
    My application connects to instance "A" of testDB.
    Schema "A" does NOT own any packages/procedure but granted execute on oracle packages/procedures that reside in schema "B" of testDB.
    In java code I call procedure(proc1) in package(pac1) which internally calls procedure(proc2) in package(pac2).
    The problem occurs when procedure pac2.proc2 is modified. After the modification, my java code fails and throws an exception "User-Defined Exception" and I am also getting "ORA-06508: PL/SQL: could not find program unit being called". This clears up only if I bounce the web container. (This doesn't happen if I modify pac1.proc1 and run my application)
    Has any one faced this problem? Please suggest if any thing can be changed in jdbc code to fix this problem.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    I assume these are PL/SQL packages and that the changes are made at the package specification level?
    If so, it looks like you are hitting the PL/SQL dependencies rules. In other words, if the spec of proc2 is changed, then proc1 is invalidated, since proc1 still depends on the old version of proc2's spec. As a result, if you try to run proc1, its spec must either be explicitly rewritten before it could run again or implicitly recompiled first, if the (implicit) recompilation fails, it won’t run.

    Wanting to use Photoshop CS6 to open images directly from iPhoto 11.
    Using OSX10.8.2 and iPhoto 11.  Just installed Photoshop CS6 and want to open
    images directly from iPhoto.    Before I installed PS I was not able to edit photos
    in iPhoto 11.  Nothing happens when I click on ‘edit‘ it is blank.
    And now it will not work using Photoshop CS6 either.
    From Help Center I have gone to iPhoto/Preferences/ Advanced and chosen Photoshop CS6  to Edit Photos but then cannot find an 'Open' to click? Perhaps this is the problem?
    When I select a photo in iPhoto and click the Edit button - nothing happens.
    Please advise. Glenys

    This may be of help to you:
    Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
    1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
    2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
    3 - however, if you get the navigation window
    that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
    This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
    NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
    I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
    Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

    If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

    You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
    So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program.

  • Return String from Oracle stored proc using Excel 2003 VBA

    Hi to everyone,
    I've got a problem that remains unsolved for many days. I am trying to return a value of an oracle stored procedure using Excel VBA. It might seem trivial, however it's not for someone, who has never done it before...
    OS: Win XP SP3
    Excel 2003
    Ora Client: 11g
    By trying different things I have noticed, that I could have troubles with the ODBC-connection. Maybe I am not using the right one. To store data returned from select statements I have an ODBC-Connection (Driver: Oracle in XE), which works perfectly, e.g.:
    Sub Extract_Data()
    Dim cn As ADODB.Connection
    Dim rs As ADODB.Recordset
    Dim db_name, UserName, Password As String
    cn.Open db_name, USerName, Password
    sql_statement = "SELECT some_text FROM some_table"
    Set rs = cn.Execute(sql_statement)
    rs.MoveFirst 'jump to the first entry in the data list
    Row = 2
    While Not rs.EOF
    'save the data to a worksheet
    ip.Cells(Row, 2) = rs(0).Value
    Row = Row + 1
    rs.MoveNext
    Wend
    End Sub
    Now I need to execute a stored procedure to return a semi-colon delimited string.
    I have tried the following:
    Public Sub obj_class()
    Dim cn As New ADODB.Connection
    Dim strSQL, cn As String
    Dim adoCMD As ADODB.Command
    Dim adoRS As ADODB.Recordset
    Set wb = Excel.ActiveWorkbook
    Set ih = wb.Sheets("InfoSheet")
    cn.Open db_name, UserName, Password
    Set adoCMD = New ADODB.Command
    With adoCMD
    .ActiveConnection = cn
    .CommandText = "S#mdb$stg_da_extr_util.get_all_classes_of_classif"
    .CommandType = adCmdStoredProc
    .Parameters.Refresh
    '------ and here comes the error saying:
    '------ could not find the object in the collection corresponding to the name or ordinal reference requested by the application
    .Parameters("i_caller").Value = "'STG_DATA_REQUEST'"
    .Parameters("i_obj_classif_id").Value = 120
    Set adoRS = .Execute()
    End With
    End Sub
    I did asked on the forum:
    http://www.access-programmers.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=1241667#post1241667
    but unfortunately without success.
    Could it be, that my ODBC-connection is wrong? When debugging the connection string, I find the Provider=MSDASQL5.1.
    I have moderate knowledge in VBA, but absolutely a newbie with Oracle DB. Is there any source of information that can help solving this issue? Looking forward to hearing from you, as I am almost giving up... ;(

    My VBA is super rusty. Does that error come after Parameters.Refresh, or after .Parameters("i_caller").Value = "'STG_DATA_REQUEST'"?
    If it's the second one, you'll need the definition of the stored procedure so you can see what parameters it's expecting. That'd mean you're getting something wrong with the names.

  • Unicode string now returned from Stored Proc., used to be ANSI.

    Using ADO to connect VB6 to Oracle 8 stored procedures used to return strings in ANSI format. At some point in the last year or so, strings suddenly began to be returned as Unicode, unreadable by VB.
    Same problem now occurs using VB.Net and ODP.Net; I need to support both VB6 and .NET versions.
    Why are strings being encoded differently than before? Has anybody else seen this problem? What can be done?
    The NLS_LANG registry entries on the server and client machines match each other. Some of our installed base of customers reported this change, too.
    Below are some demonstration code examples.
    Stored procedure looks like this:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE MyStoredProc
    (sMyMsg IN OUT VARCHAR2) AS
    BEGIN
         sMyMsg := 'My test string';
    RETURN;
    END;
    On the VB6 side, my code looks like this:
    Dim vParam As Variant
    Dim cmdExecute As ADODB.Command
    Dim pParam As ADODB.Parameter
    Set cmdExecute = New ADODB.Command
    cmdExecute.CommandType = adCmdStoredProc
    cmdExecute.CommandText = "MyStoredProc"
    Set pParam = cmdExecute.CreateParameter("PARAM1", vbString, adParamInputOutput, 0, vParam)
    cmdExecute.Parameters.Append pParam
    cmdExecute.ActiveConnection = ADOConnect
    cmdExecute.Execute
    vParams = cmdExecute.Parameters(0)
    Result of VB code is that vParams now contains a Unicode string.
    Any suggestions as to what's happening, where the problem might be, what to do about it, or where else to post this question (I'm not sure which Forum is the best place to look for answers) would be appreciated.
    Is "force SQL_WCHAR" relevant to this problem? If so, what does that mean and how/where do I apply it?

    The Force WCHAR option forces the ODBC driver to
    report columns and return data as Unicode. If that
    is checked, you probably want to uncheck it.But how do I do that? I can't find any documentation for a SQL_WCHAR option. Where do I go to read/change the current setting of this switch?
    What character set is your client & database?NLS_LANG, for both machines, is "AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1". BTW, the client is 9.2, but the database is version 8.1.7. I'm fairly certain that the problem also existed when the client was also running ver. 8.

  • How do I get to my iphoto albums to use as screensaver in OS X 10.8?

    How do I get to my iphoto albums to use as screensaver in OS X 10.8? As it is, I am limited to the pre-seloected screensavers (National
    geographic, etc.).  When I get to the field for "Folder" and select "Pictures", the iPhoto Library is there, but it is in faint print (along with most other files in the Pcitures folder) indicating that they can't be selected.

    Hi.
    I'm having the same issue.
    • Photo Library is not a Source option in the Screen Saver Preference pane.
    • iPhoto Library and Photo Booth Library are not selectable options with Source > Choose Folder...
    • No "screensaver cache" exists on my machine.
    I've trashed the preferences for screen saver (user/library/preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist). Didn't help.
    Also trashed ...systempreferences.plist.  Didn't help.
    I replaced the current preference pane with the Desktop & Screensaver pane from OS X Lion (from TM backup). Didn't help.
    I can duplicate this even when I boot from another install of Mountain Lion that I have on an external drive used for troubleshooting
    My workaround is to drag the photos that I would like to use from particular Events or Albums from within iPhoto into a like-named folder in Finder. Then select that folder as the Source from the Screen Saver System Preferences pane.
    In the big scheme of things this, for me, is a relatively minor thing. And I can work around it.
    But, it's obvious that something is not working properly, and it's probably something that the software folks at Apple should look into.
    My setup is:
    • mid-2010 iMac, 17", 3.06/16/500
    • OS X 10.8.1
    • iPhoto '09 (v8.1.2)

  • Retrieving PL/SQL Table Type returned by stored procedure using Java.

    Hi All,
    I am facing an issue in a Stored Procedure (SP) which returns Table Type, the PL/SQL complex type.
    Below mentioned is how my stored procedure looks like.
    CREATE OR REPLACE package sp_test_pkg as
    TYPE v_value_table_type is table of SW_VALID_CODE.swValue%Type
    index by binary_integer;
    v_swRMAStatus v_value_table_type;

    end sp_test_lcode_code_pkg;
    My java program to access this stored procedure is as given below:

    } finally {
    if(cstmt != null) try{cstmt.close();}catch(Exception _ex){}
    if(con != null) try{con.close();}catch(Exception _ex){}
    When i execute this java program, i get the following error:

    I am not sure where i am going wrong. I have never worked on such complex types before. I want to retrieve the complex table type returned by the stored procedure using my java source code.
    Can anyone please help me out in resolving this issue?. This is very urgent.

    JDBC does not recognise types declared in PL/SQL. This is documented in the Dev Guide. [Find out more|http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/java.920/a96654/oraarr.htm#1057625].
    The only work around would be to build a wrapper which calls your existing PL/SQL procedures and returns a SQL type instead. Obviously not knowing your precise scenario I have no idea how much work this entails for you. It may be worth building a code generator.
    Cheers, APC

  • How to list all tables/stored procedures used by the report

    All the reports i create are getting data from stored procedure(s). Is there a way to obtaining a listing of all the stored procedures without having to open report by report and check under Database > Set Datasource Location > Properties > Table Name?
    Finding this info it would be extremely valuable, as it would help me to judge the impact of any changes that i might be considering to one or more of the stored proc.
    So far i maintained a manual listing but it is not up-to-date and reliable. I would rather prefer to get an updated listing every time i want to change/drop a stored procedure.
    Thanks so much for your help.
    Rick

    Dell can you be a little bit more specific about the SDK solution. I could ask one of the developers to help me but i need to gather more details.
    I took a look .rpt inspector Pro but it does not do what i need. All i need is the the listing of all the database tables (in my case stored procs) used in my reports. No need to replace or change anything. I need to scan the directory where i have all the reports for the different applications and get report names and table/stored procs used. i can export the txt file to excel and that's all.

  • Good source for learning - SQL Stored Proceedures using Dreamweaver

    I am looking for a good source for learning how to integrate
    Stored
    Proceedures using Dreamweaver?
    Is there a book or something online?
    Thanks

    Hey Lee,
    You find yourself in that position, I find myself in that
    position, every
    damn developer/programer in the world find themselves in that
    position. It
    may be on different levels, but everyones in the same boat.
    Here is my suggestion. Take the existing knowledge you have,
    pick a
    technology that is a bit more futureproof (if the one you
    have is getting
    outdated) and one that isn't too far removed from the one you
    know and put
    it all into that one area.
    Databases are really important if you want to be a decent web
    developer. If
    you're serious and want to be good then devote time to a
    particular database
    and get to know it well. I would suggest SQL Server. You
    don't have to be
    DBA standard but get as much knowledge on it as you can.
    Never underestimate
    your required knowledge of databases.
    Set yourself goals. Say to yourself "In 6 months I want to be
    a proficient
    developer in this language" and go for it. Don't get
    side-tracked into
    something else just keep focused on one area and get good at
    it. Yes, that
    language will become outdated in time but you will be all the
    more ready to
    take on the next because of your past experiences.
    I try to look at it like this; It is better to a master of
    one technology
    and know enough to get by in others than a Jack of all
    technologies but a
    master of none.

When I open iMovie 6 and go to insert the iPhoto pics, none of them show up. I assumed (I know) that iPhoto wouldn't be backwards compatible WITHIN iPhoto, but it appears the pics are not backwards compatible with iMovie 6 either. Is there a fix or am I hosed?

    I have iPhoto 08 and use it just fine with iMovie 6, no problem whatsoever.
    Try deleting the preference files for both iPhoto and iMovie 6 and see if that helps. Close both apps first.
    Go to YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist and com.apple.iMovie.plist (NOT iMovie7.plist). Drag those plist files to the trash. Reopen iPhoto, click on a couple of photos, then close it, and open iMovie. See if it works with iPhoto 8 now.
    Post back if this does not work.

  • How to bind arrays to PL/SQL stored procedure using OCI?

    Hi,
    We are having problems trying to bind arrays to PL/SQL stored procedure using OCI. Here is the situation:
    - We have a stored procedure called "GetVEPFindTasks" with the following interface:
    PROCEDURE GetVEPFindTasks (
    p_ErrorCode OUT NUMBER,
    p_ErrorMsg OUT VARCHAR2,
    p_RowCount OUT NUMBER,
    p_VEPFindTasks OUT t_VEPFindTaskRecordTable,
    p_MaxTask IN NUMBER);
    t_VEPFindTaskRecordTable is a record with the following entries:
    TYPE t_VEPFindTaskRecord IS RECORD (
    RTCID NUMBER,
    TransNum NUMBER,
    TransTimestamp VARCHAR2(20),
    Pathname1 image_data.pathname%TYPE,
    Pathname2 image_data.pathname%TYPE,
    Pathname3 image_data.pathname%TYPE,
    OperatorID operator.id%TYPE);
    - Now, we are trying to call the stored procedure from C++ using OCI (in UNIX). The call that we use are: OCIBindByName and OCIBindArrayOfStruct to bind the parameters to the corresponding buffers. We bind all parameters in the interface by name. Now, we do bind the record's individual item by name (RTCID, TransNum, etc.), and not as a record. I don't know if this is going to work. Then, we use the bind handles of the binded record items (only record items such as RTCID, TransNum, and NOT error_code which is not part of the record) to bind the arrays (using OCIBindArrayOfStruct).
    All of the parameters that are binded as arrays are OUTPUT parameters. The rest are either INPUT or INPUT/OUTPUT parameters. Now, when we try to execute, OCI returns with an error "Invalid number or types of arguments" (or something to that sort... the number was something like ORA-06550). Please help...
    Is there any sample on how to use the OCIBindArrayOfStruct with PL/SQL stored procedures? The sample provided from Oracle is only for a straight SQL statement.
    Thank's for all your help.

    As you said:
    You have to pass in an array for every field and deconstruct/construct the record in the procedure. There is no support for record type or an array of records. Can you give me a example? I'am very urgently need it.
    thanks
