Finding iWeb sites to look at

OK. Dopey question. How do I find other peoples' iWeb sites so I can take a look at them, read their blogs etc... so I can consider if it's worth taking the time to set one up?

Hey Kalum,
Thank you very much for your comments.
It took me a long, long time to design my website.
Everything has been done with iWeb except the main
logo the cirles and the animation (iMovie).
To create the square I simply picked the Round corner
Square Shape in Inspector and played with the
transparancy...
Hi Xavier,
You really did do a great job on it !!
Was the entire opening Quicktime animation done in iMovie?
Did you create the logo in Illustrator or Photoshop by any chance.
I am so excited and motivated to work on my own site.
I didn't even think of iMovie as a way to create animation. There I was thinking I would need to buy Flash or some other expensive software to create animations.
Thank you so much for the tips and encouragement !!
I definitely need to spend more time really pushing the limits of the software I already have (i.e. the entire iLife suite, Illustrator CS, iWeb, Photoshop CS etc).
I will post my site when it is ready to go.
Would love your feedback.

  • Help! iweb can't find my site/files

    Help!
I've been using iweb for 8 years. LOVE it. I've even successfully been using iweb seo. But yesterday went to make some changes to my site and opened Iweb and my site is gone. Usually it loads in all the pages on the left column all neat and pretty. But it looks like it's the first time i've ever opened the program. it's asking me which template i'd like to use.:(  Plus i had a bunch of after market iweb templates loaded in too for options and those aren't there either.
some background...Last week i tried to clean up my desktop and dumped everything into one desktop folder. I thought that might be the problem so i pulled everything out of the folder today, including the domain sites file  and the website folder. And it still can't find the site.  Any help would be greatly appreciated and keep me from jumping out the window!
I've never had this happen before even with switching to 2 different computers over the years. its like it dumped it's entire memory.
I have an IMAC 21.5" 2009 intel core processor
running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
Thank you in advance for the help!

If you are using Time Machine to backup your files give this a try:
1 -  download  Find Any File.
2 - launch FAF and search your Time Machine hard drive for "Domain.sites2".  It wil take a while due to the nature of the backup structure.  The search results will look like this:
3 - locate the latest backup from before the problem occurred and drag it out of the scarch window to the Desktop.
4 - open the domain file with iWeb as described below:
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

I am in the process of rebuilding my site with iweb '09 and want to see what others have done using iweb '09. I want to see what is possible. Any ideas where I should look ? Thanks - Thomas

that's a pretty good looking iWeb site.
I also think something he mentions is good advice for someone who wants to make a iWeb site look as pro as possible, which is to avoid the templates. While the templates look good on the Mac, they seem to be a cause of grief for IE, which most people use to surf the net. Also, they're canned. It's better, I think, to start with a blank slate and build from there. Stylistically, I think there's a trend towards simple elegance in professional websites rather than ginned up designs that are no longer as popular as they used to be.
Here is a site I made in iWeb that exemplifies the "simple elegance" that I think is becoming popular these days and also coincides with iWeb's ability to work better on more systems when the design elements are kept simple. Basically, the iWeb site I came up with is a search engine. I know that sounds boring but I'm thinking it may be handy for people looking for a particular website but don't know where to find it yet. There are also some additional features I've been adding into it, and advertising here and there to generate some income, but basically it's a search engine. I've finally gotten it off MobileMe and onto a 3rd party host so the URL is now www.google.com. Let me know what you think!

I'm trying to find a way, using version 2.0.4 of iWeb on a different
pb to recover the file into the iWeb app or a way to download the site into iWeb.
There are 6 pages of images and text, and it
would be a task for me to recreate the whole thing again. I did

Does anyone have any knowledge about this? The link to my site:

Unfortunately iWeb cannot read or import previously published files, only generate them.  You'll have to recreate your site from scratch.
However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.

Try this community: MobileMe on my Mac: MobileMe: Apple Support Communities.
And you can continue to use iWeb for some time to come. The following will explain:
It's now confirmed that iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
In addition the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on.
HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still currently available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those copies still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.

If you erased or replaced your hard drive since iWeb was cancelled, then they are gone. Otherwise, if you have maintained backups then check those.
Usually such files are in the /Home/Library/ folder or a sub-folder.
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • Google finding iWeb mobileme site

I have an iWeb mobileme site and a separate domain name linked. Google can't find it.
Does a site have to be hosted separately for this to happen?

In terms of SEO, iWeb sites aren't that different from any other site. It's slightly more challenging to accomplish some things, but for the most part, you can nail all of the important on-page optimizations on iWeb that you could if you were to have an HTML/CSS website.
But anyways, if your site isn't commercial and traffic isn't a big issue for you, then you don't really need to worry about SEO or hosting. If you want to be found to some degree, ie. typing your site URL into Google, then you just need to create and submit an XML Sitemap and you're good to go.

  • Finding my iweb site

I'm trying to find my iweb sites. Problem is I'm traveling with my other computer i.e the one that I did not publish iweb with (I have one dedicated computer to puplish iweb pages). So when I go to my .mac account Home Page, I see "My Pages" and only 5 of my 15 published iweb pages are listed. Then on the next row I see the list from my previous version of my Home Pages published prior to iweb.
When I click on "My Pages" or "More" it takes me to my list of the previous version of my sites. I need to find my other 10 iweb published pages but it only has a list of 5. It doesn't make sense and it appears that Apple is paying more attention to the previous version of my Home Pages.
    Thanks.

.Mac homepage only shows your most recently updated 5 pages.

  • My iweb site... give it a look

    Guys and Gals,
This is my latest iweb site and I would appreciate your feedback. The demo videos have no audio yet. The site is hosted on my Xserve and a very fast colocation facility. The service it describes uses the Mac OS X Server WIKI and blog features on the backend.
    Take a look.

Nice site, and how refreshing to see an iWeb site not using a default theme. It is clean and uncluttered which is good. I (personally) would change 3 things:
    1. The color of the 'selected' nav-bar is dark gray and becomes lost against the bluey-gray header. Perhaps make the 'selected' color stand-out more...light blue... And change the Red rollover color. It really doe not go with the rest of the design. Stick to blue.
    2. Move the Google Ad. It looks as though it has been added as a last minute afterthought and really looks out of place where it is.
    3. I would add a dedicated 'Contact Us' page. I can't help but think that people who your site is aimed at really want to talk to people. You really should have your contact details all over the place.
They are just my minor thoughts.

  • Published site doesn't look like my iweb site

Trying to launch my iweb 08 site www.nwhorsemassage.com using acornhost in Portland, Oregon. I thought I uploaded site using FTP and renaming homepage index.html. When I open it on my desktop it looks great, going to the site it looks like a mess without pictures, color, and most text. What am I doing wrong?

Think your problems might come from re-naming a homepage index.html. You don't need to do this and it can cause confusion because iWeb creates a separate index.html page on publication to a folder.
Have you uploaded correctly? When you publish to a folder your will get one large site folder with all your files and your site in it and then a separate index page. You need to upload both these pages ibn full and then place then in either the www or the public_html folder at your host or whatever is there.

  • Making IWeb sites look good.

I've seen a lot of iWeb sites, and for the most part they're not bad, but generally they look really generic. From my graphic design point of view there are a few things that people can do to improve the "look"of their site.
    1. Delete the auotmatic navigation bar that iWeb creates when making new pages. This can be done under the page tab in the inspector. Anything can be turned into a hyperlink, so make your own buttons, instead of letting iWeb do it. This means graphics and any kind of text you want. Be creative.
2.A. Typograghy please. Its a good rule of thumb to only use a few different fonts. Doing this throughout the website will add consistency to the overall design. iWeb allows for strict control over type (take advantage of this) text type (paragraph length type) looks best at a smaller sizes ie. 9-11 pt. Also increase the leading (the amount of space between lines of type). This will make the text easier to read.
2.B. Choose your own fonts. Don't use iWeb's default fonts. Generally text size can be reduced as well. Type makes the page, so pay attention to it.
    Hope these tips help someone.

    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello all,
I would like to add to red.sea's comments. The reason : I have over 60 emails to reply on the topic of iWeb design from forum members.
It's a hard question to answer when someone asks you ways to improve their sites ... without wanting to hurt their feelings. I have to consider the fact that because I do this comfortably for a living, design comes as natural to me as painting. But what I have always enjoyed in my life, is seeing someone try ... and ultimately enjoy what they can achieve. Imagination is surely one of the greatest virtues.
Having said that, I would like to add a couple of points. This principally applies to people who wish to build a site entirely from scratch using a white blank page. But some of these methods will apply to template users.
Before designing a site, sketch it out on paper. Each slip represents a new page. Mark out roughly the topics, the placement of pictures, the amount of text involved on the page. This will save you a lot of time - believe me.
    FONTS
Refine what you have just done in (1) by selecting different fonts as red.sea mentioned. Choose fonts according to the theme of the site. E.g. Romantic wedding sites, use fonts like Zapfino, Mona Lisa Solid, Bodoni etc. - script as well as serif fonts. Modern sites - sans serif fonts seems to be the trend, and it has been for a number of years. Examples, Gill Sans, Optima. The default Helvetica isn't bad, but try using Light instead of Bold. Use large point size. I use Avenir and Nobel on my sites.
N.B. The only area to leave as template default, is the blog - in case you want to use the Search feature.
    IMAGES
Work your images to 100% of the size you intend to use in iWeb. Resizing will blur the images. This has been mentioned many times over, so I won't touch on this further. 72dpi images work fine with me and if you must, tweak your colours before dragging them to iWeb - if you are using Photoshop, for instance. Unsharp mask can help sharpen your pictures. I use NIK filters.
COLOUR (I was raised in England, so I spell with a 'U')
Theme colour is important. Many folks feel that white is boring. That really depends on how you use it and design normally plays a part in this. Should you choose to use colours, there are millions to use on the palette. Avoid strong primary colours unless you have a good design-sense. As mentioned, check the mood, the topic, the theme. If you have black and white photos, use black, grey or white as background. Light (often pastel) colours work well with B&Ws too. This can be a very in depth discussion, but I think you get my drift. Lastly, try and maintain a flowing look/theme to your site. It's very pleasant to browse through sites like these.
    TEXT
Placing of text is by far the biggest issue for most iWebbers. Some sites have the right colours but is ruined with text running everywhere. One site had long sentences and paragraphs (11pt font size) stretching 600px from left to right which went on forever. It's an eye sore and nobody is going to read it, especially folks above 40 something. Make columns instead. The guides work beautifully on iWeb, just like in Keynote. Make sure under preferences > Alignment Guides, both are checked. Keep these columns tidy and aligned to something on your page - a photo, your headline - something the body copy can have affliation to. Play with the leading (space in between the text).
There are other things I would like to add ... maybe later.
I hope this helps rather than offend. Over the last couple of weeks, I have met and corresponded with many members from this forum. It's been a delight. I thank you for trying.

  • IWeb Not Finding My Site After Re-Install

    Hi guys,
I've had to re-install OSX on my Macbook. I backed up my iWeb website before I did this and put it back where I found it.
When I open iWeb now it just prompts me to start a new site.
How do I get the old iweb site back into iweb??
    Thanks
    Steve

So even though I backed up all the html files, pictures etc of the site I created in iWeb, they're now useless to me because I didn't back up this one file?
There's no way to get iWeb to recognise the site it created anymore?
That seems crazy! I used iWeb to keep my life simple but I think I'm better sticking to manual webpage creation in future.

If you would like to know, in addition to the number of visitors, where they are from, what size monitor they used, what site they came from to get to your site, what browser they used,  what system they were using and more then try a 3rd party counter.
I use StatCounter which give all that info an more.  This tutorial describes how to add the counter to each page via an HTML snippet: #13 - Adding a StatCounter as an HTML Snippet

  • My iWeb site can no longer be found by browsers

I have had an iWeb site which has been live for about a month. It has been working perfectly. I have updated several times without any issue. It still appears to be working well within iWeb. I can make changes and publish changes.
I have my own domain name hosted on mobileme
When I now search the internet using any browser, it says
Can't open the page http://www.dhsem.com.au/ because the server where this page is located isn't responding.
I have checked my .mac account and everything seems to be fully functional. Why has my site suddenly disappeared off the internet?
I have tried removing the com.apple.iWeb.plist file from Library/Preferences, rebooting the computer, republishing the entire site, all to no avail.
The site is still sitting in iDisk/Web/Sites.
Everything looks normal from the iWeb side of things. For some reason, no browser can find the server (The IP address of the server is: 118.215.20.59)
    Would appreciate any help

You don't need to get your domain name registrar to do this - you should easily be able to do it yourself.
Firstly, ensure that your domain name is entered into the Personal Domain name setting of your MobileMe account.
Go to your domain name registrar and then set up CNAME forwarding if they provide this and forward your domain name to web.me.com - this is all you need do - you don't need to fiddle with nameservers or anything else like that.
If they don't provide CNAME forwarding then you can use web forwarding instead.
