Finding lost files

After recently moving the Lightroom folder to an external hard drive, Lightroom shows thumbnails of images, but can't locate the files.
We've chosen the new folder location in preferences, but after restarting the computer and the program, the list of folders still appears red, meaning Lightroom can't see the original files.
We know they are there, for they appear in the operating system, can be opened in PhotoShop, are visible in Bridge. Any thoughts?
I'm working with a Dell Dimension DXP061
Adobe Lightroom 1.3
2 GB of RAM with 13G of Free Disk Space
Thanks,
Fred & Laurel

Choose the top folder and double click on it. You should get a dialog saying LR can't find it, do you want to locate it? Click yes, and then navigate to your new location.

  • Is there any collective way to have Lightroom 5 find lost files?

Though I have tried to move folders and files only with Lightroom, I note that a good number of my images shown in thumbnails in Library cannot be opened because Lightroom 5 cannot find the files.  I assume I have moved files among drives accidentally without Lightroom's knowledge.  I also note that I can control click and try to find individual files.  Is there any way to do this find process for entire folders or drives?  Can I import files from a drive (which is the original source of the lost files) in mass and run them through the import function on Lightroom and return them directly to the file from which they were imported?  Would this create a new thumbnail in Library but duplicate the files in the affected folder and drive?

Lightroom isn't going to allow you to import images a second time. In the left-hand panel of the library module you can Ctrl-click on a folder and choose to update the folder location or find the missing folder. Have you tried that?

  • Finding lost files in LR

    Hi,
I have over 100 000 lost files in my LR catalogue.  It's the result of several hard drive and OS upgrades.  I understand how to do it one at a time but I have just way too many to move.
    What are my options?
    Thanks,

On your iMac launch iTunes and at the top next to the Apple symbol click iTunes > Preferences > Devices and tell me what you see. You last sync should be there showing only a device name. If you have an older backup it will be there as well the difference is it will be the device name with a date and time stamp. Sync and backups are two different things and there is a chance iTunes made a backup the first time you hooked up your iPhone 5.

    its very important files!

    tis true
I know, I always do that but I was in a rush to get somewhere and I was relying on my thousand dollar Mac to do some kind of recovery or something. I know Microsoft always keeps temporary files (I think Mac does too, part of me asking here in this forum was for someone to tell me where I can find those files) and when you go to open Office Works then it gives you the option of opening the last recent documents, saved or not saved.
I usually copy paste into my emial just in case something goes wrong with the created document but I just didn't have the time to login and do all that My loss, you live and you learn, BUT still if ANYONE got any info on this, PLEASE DO CHIME IN *keeping the hope alive*

    Hey MHallon,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you need to redownload previously purchased content from the iTunes Store. The following resource should assist you in doing so:

  • How to find a lost file in Microsoft Office Autorecovery

Hi - This isn't really a question, though it would have been a couple of hours ago.
After saving all his files, closing them and closing all apps, my husband rebooted his Mac Pro (Lion).  When it restarted, his key Excel file wasn't there.  There was no trace of it in Finder, and no trace in Time Machine.  A search by Date Modified or File Name didn't show the file anywhere, either.  It was like it had been sucked out of the computer and the Time Machine hard drive completely.
Cheering as that thought is, there is another answer.
Microsoft Office has an Autorecovery function that saves files when, for example, there's a power failure.  These files are located on the home drive, in the Library (press Option when you click "GO" in the Finder command line at the top of the screen, otherwise Library is invisible).  In Library, there is a folder called Application Support.  In that folder are folders for a number of applications, one of which is Microsoft.  In the Microsoft folder, there is a folder called Office.  In that folder are a number of folders, one of which is Office 2011 AutoRecovery.  Click that, and any files saved by the autorecovery function will appear.
    Hierarchically:
         Finder
              Go
                   Library
                        Application Support
                             Microsoft
                                  Office
                                       Office 2011 AutoRecovery
The key thing to realize here is that a file which gets saved in Autorecovery DOES NOT appear in any searches by date modified, name of file, etc.  It's as if it is hidden completely after being saved.  When you turn the computer back on after a power failure, the file pops up and does say something about recovery, but if you're not looking for it, it's easy to miss.  As long as you have the file open and keep saving, there's no problem - it's just that when you close it, it seems to have disappeared completely!
I found this information on the Microsoft help pages under a slightly different heading:
    http://http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2650066#Method3
So for what it's worth, that's the story, and I hope it saves someone the sheer panic of not being able to find a file in Office.

I kept getting this error message when I was working in Word 2011 and searching for answers:
"This is not a valid file name. Try one or more of the following: Check the path to make sure it was typed correctly. Select a firle from the list of files and folders."
It started about 3 weeks ago. I was driving me bonkers. I found this posting that let me find the hieracy for the AutoRecovery files and reloacted them to Office 2011 >Office folder. I don't know how it got moved to another location (actually the file was in the trash when I found it. When I went to (Word>Preference>File Location>AutoRecovery) it showed the location of the file as being in the trash - Weird.  I moved the file to Office and clicked Modify and the AutoRecovery link in Location showed the change that the file was now in Office. It seems that all is well again-at least for now.
According to some sources I found, I thought I was going to have to reload Word 2011. I did not have to go through that hassel. Thanks so much for the response given by margb that helped me solve this annoying issue.

  • ITunes update corrupted some of my music files so iTunes can't find the file, nor music I  bought from the iTunes store.

After an iTunes generated update of iTunes, some of my music can't be accesed any more. When I try to play the file, iTunes says it can't find the link. This also happens with music I purchase from the iTunes store, so I've lost all this music; do I have to re-buy the purchased music again? My iTunes program is on my C drive, and the music library is on my D drive. In iTunes, I've set the ripped music to be placed in my D drive. The lost links are on some music files, but not others which do play music. Some compilation music files were split up into individual files, usually without LP art attached. Some album art was placed on wrong albums as well. Music with lost links have a ! mark beside the song name. File info says the link is on my C drive, but I can't find it there. Any ideas on how to get these lost files back. Thanks, Moizy.

    Try this...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • How Do I use TM to find a file on my computers Idisk from today's backup?

Where do I find the file that is on my Idisk's Time Machine Backup that was on my laptop this morning when TM backed up????? My Idisk had a problem this morning and when I sought help, they had me hit the stop and restart the syncing. The problem is that even though there was a file on my Idisk on my computer from last night, the Idisk syncing reset every file from the mobileme cloud to my laptop and the file on my mobileme cloud was from 2 days ago. Not the updated one from last night. I teach and my attendance is all taken and stored on the Idisk (and synced) from all my classes. Wed & Thursday attendances were on my laptop correctly. (I know because I checked BEFORE they told me to restart the sync button on preferences. My laptop did its normal BU this morning so I am trying to find the excel attendance file on the backup. Can anyone help????????
I don't know why that happened but it did!!!
Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Dear Thomas,
I entered TM and found the sparsebundle under the Filesync library. However, it appears NOT to be recoverable and I tried double clicking on it but it doesnt do anything other than show a summary of what it is.
By the way, I really do appreciate your comments and agree completely. Something strange happened with my syncing of Idisk (which is set to "automatic"). It has been working fine for years. But for some reason, it stopped two days ago and did not let me know. When I tried to put something manually on it (through drag/drop), it never showed up on the Idisk on the cloud which made me notice and check it out by going to Mobileme through the browser. I then went to the tech service for Idisk and they explained that something probably got corrupted so just hit STOP syncing and then hit Automatic again. Which is what I did. Then everything from the cloud went to my Idisk on my computer and for some reason, the latest version of my excel spread sheet for attendance showed two days ago, not last night. so I lost wed/thursday classes. I KNOW it was on my Laptop which is backed up to TM every morning.. Thats why I believe that the latest file IS on my TM backup for this morning. But I can't get to it. Any other help would be appreciated.

  • I accidentally formatted my portable hard drive when setting it up for time machine. Is there any way for me to get back my lost files?

I have an external hard drive of the brand Western Digital.
Before I got my iMac I moved a lot of my important files from my PC to the hard drive and today I went on and connected it to my iMac to move my files over to it.
When it had connected a window popped up that asked if I wanted to use this hard drive with the program Time Machine and create backups. Without thinking it trough enough and reading the warning properly (I'm stupid I know) I clicked "yes". I then realised how stupid it was and cancelled the formatting of the hard drive. But somehow the program still managed to delete all my important files and can't find any way to get them back. Neither can I connect the hard drive to my PC anymore so I can't check if the files are still there (which I doubt they are since I can't see them on my iMac either).
And now I wonder: is there any way for me to get back my lost files or are they lost forever?
    Thank you in advance!
    //Gina

A data recovery specialist or some data recovery programs should be able to help.  Most format simply rewrite the directory tree saying no files are on this disk.  The bits that represent the files are still flipped appropreiately so they still exists, you just don't have the location info to get at them.  Secure formats and erases rewrite each bit to a zero or 1 or random so the data is then truely gone.  This type of format takes a long time to complete.
I'm not making a recomendation of a particular program but here is one company that does what you ask:
http://www.remosoftware.com/mac-recovery  The cost is pretty high but I'm sure they don't sell many copies and need to cover their development costs.
Good luck and don't write anything on the freshly formatted disk until you decide what to do.

  • How do I find my files in an exported catalogue

I have exported a catalogue using my mac.
I can't find the files inside the expected catalogue.
They are showing in lightroom but with an exclamation mark in top right corner saying files are missing.
When I use he locate files they aren't showing in the lightroom catalogue saved to my mac.
Help please I've lost a full recent shoot

Images are not "in" the catalog. Images are in folders on the computer. If you exported a catalog, and are trying to use it on another computer, then you need to copy the images to that new computer as well. If you are using this exported catalog on the same computer as the original, then that could indicate that you have renamed or moved the images after the catalog was created. Please provide more detail of how you are using this new catalog that you exported. Here is a link to instructions telling you how to find missing photos.
