Finding "old" files

Upgraded from CS4 to CS5 and went looking for all of my old websites. I can find them and open the files from my computers directory but the layout doesn't look like the same as in CS4. I used to be able to find them in the DW Pop-Up. Do I need to set them up again in 5 or something?

Not sure how many sites you have.  Do you still have cs4 installed?  If so, you could use the manual method of reentering each site by directory path although there must be an automated way of doing this that I do not know about yet.

  • Finder can't find old files/folders prior to SL update from Leopard

    Hello.
I'm having problems with Finder tool. I've read some topics and even tried some terminal commands to no avail. My wife's account can't find her quicken files prior to update. She is a well organized person and now has to go into the folders to find the files instead of a quick spotlight seach.
Will I have to restore her profile again from timecapsule? How can I get finder to find right again?
A little more details of upgrade: I've got 2 machines, and Imac and a macbook. The 2nd one is ok. On it I did the upgrade straght on top of the old system. On the Imac the procedure was different. I set the machine to zero and put SL and then pulled the timecapsule backup, that was still on Leopard. Would that cause a confloct on finder? Only the Imac can't find the older files, prior to the update.
I'm thinking of restoring the timecapsule backup again to Leopard on the Imac and upgrading like i did on the macbook.
If there's and easier way to restore the finder's abililites to find, I'd surelly apreciate it. Saves me a lot of trouble having all done again on the Imac.
    Thx

I'm thinking of restoring the timecapsule backup again to Leopard on the Imac and upgrading like i did on the macbook.
    Best move.

  • New iBook / Can't find old files

    Hi -
I just got my new iBook G4 today, started it up, it prompted me to connect the new iBook to my old iBook and it transferred all the files.
Fine and dandy, right?... Not quite.
I decide to do a "Find" for one of my docs. No go. I went in and manually found the document (so it did exist)...
Anyone have an idea how to make this problem go away? Is it an indexing issue? If so, what's the solution?
    Thanks!
      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Bmmm,
I believe Abe solved your problem, correct? I noticed you marked the tread as solved, but you did not award any points to Abe for solving it.
One of the responsibilities of the original poster (sometimes referred to as OP) is to award points to the "solver" as well as the most helpful. The reason being, not only does it show how the problem was fixed, but it 5-10 points (depending on helpful or solved) to those who helped the most. I like to think of it as paying them back with Monopoly money. It doesn't count anywhere else, but here. The reason for these points (I believe) is to show a rough estimate someone has been helpful as well as reduce the number of slipshod responses (the idea that someone will put the extra effort to try solve/help the problem). It has become proper etiquette when posting in the forums to issue these points (my opinion). I am not an Apple host/moderator, nor do I have any authority/say in this forum. I am "just another brick in the wall". It's up to you; I just thought it was something worth mentioning.
    Thanks,
    Jon

  • Time machine - on a new Mac, how can I find my old files?

My iMac had to give way to the new baby, so I got myself an older MacBook Pro to replace it. I used the Migration Assistant to port all my music, photos etc. over, but the hard disk was smaller so had to forgo some bigger files - like my iMovie library.
As a regular Time Machine/Capsule user, I figured getting a hold of everything would be feasible.
However, now on the MacBook Pro, I can't connect to my old Time Machine volume for the iMac, and can't access any of the stuff I didn't port over. I'm certain the iMovie library is there, but I can't see past "Today" in Time Machine. Any help on how I can access my old files will be most appreciated.

  • I upgraded my computer, new OS on a new hard drive. Want to get my bookmarks off Firefox off my old drive, but can't find the file.

I upgraded my computer, by adding a second hard drive for a new OS, and kept the old drive as the data drive. I assumed that I could install Firefox on the new drive and import my bookmarks from the old Mozilla install on the old drive. I can't find the files on the old drive with my bookmarks. Should they still be there, or when I reinstalled Firefox, did I lose everything even though it was on another drive? I can't find any backup files on the old drive, and would like to restore my old bookmarks. Is there any way to do this?

You need find your profile folder in the old drive, the way must be:
    # First show the hidden files and folder:
    # Then go to:
    #*<old drive>:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
    # Enter in your profile, then enter in the '''bookmarkbackups''' folder.
    # Copy the most recent json file(bookmarks backup)
    # Then restore from them:

  • External hard drive -- old file path from a previous laptop is still where to find my songs,  how do I change?

My iTunes library is a mess, it is stored on an external hard drive.  My old laptop died unexpectedly and I didn't have a problem resetting the file path for the library on my new laptop.  The other day my son was trying to update his iPod when I wasn't home and I don't know what he did.... GRRRR  Any songs I purchased on my old laptop are now not able to be found.  When I click on 'get info' on a song it shows the old file path from the old laptop.  Songs that I purchased since the new laptop are still playable and great.  I know my songs are still there but I can't seem to get the file path to reset on the old music.  HELP!!! PLEASE

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or an external drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • What is the name of the Bookmarks file? I just bought a new computer and can't find the file to transfer from the old computer. I'm going from Windows XP to Windows 7

I was running Firefox 4.1 on a 32 Bit Windows XP Computer. I just bought a 64 Bit Windows 7 computer and reinstalled Firefox. I backed up all of my XP programs and data to an external drive but I can't find a file for my previous Firefox Bookmarks. What is the filename and possible folder where I can find my old bookmarks and how do I import them into my new version?

Bookmarks and history are stored together in your profile folder in a database file named places.sqlite. These articles should help with restoring as much or as little of your other profile as you like:

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • I just had to restore my entire system. i cannot find some of the old files on time machine

i only wanted to restore a few files that i had on my time machine backup.  the problem is that i cannot find those files when i pull up the time machine.  help, please.

If they are truly old files that you deleted at some point in the past, then they may have been erased by Time Machine for more recent backups. In that case they would be gone.

  • Can't find old transferred files from my iMac

When I was setting up my Mac Pro I chose to transfer my files from my old iMac by a firewire cable.
The problem is I can't find my files I created on my iMac with finder.
For the files where I do know it's location. I can see the files in finder and see them in quick view no problem, although I can't find those files through a finder search.

This happened to me when I got my new Mac and transferred stuff over about a year ago. Found this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2409
It should do the trick; it did for me.
Be warned--it can take a while to finish reindexing!

  • Where to find old backup files and how to use it to restore

    Hi,
Need help. I did a OS update to iOS 6 today.
Before the update I did backup my phone on my PC.
But since that backup there was a new back up that created automatically when I connected my phone back to the PC. Now with some issues I want to rollback to previous backup. But this backup file is not visible in the restore from backup list. Is there anyway I can manually find this file and try to restore from it.
In the backup folder I can see a few files with previous backup time stamp but not sure how I can use these files and which file to use..
    Pls help.. Thanks.

Open the Users folder on the internal drive, drag the migrated home folder to the desktop, and provide your administrator password.

how do i find my files? its supposed to be under a new account but the apple store made these accounts and i cant log into them bc they have a password

Drag that account's home folder to your current account's desktop and provide an administrator password. If you don't know any administrator passwords on that system, ask the Apple Store.

  • Archive and install: pb to find my old files

    Hi,
I had a bad bug in my os x tiger, so I had to "archive and install" to fix the bug.
When I open my "user" file, I find a file name : "Paul.sparseimage" image file 16Go(Paul was the name of the user I want to find the files), where there is all my files in. The problem is that I can't open it...
    Please help me...
    Paul

Sounds like before you used Archive and Install
you had File Vault enabled on your user account.
If you remember your former password double click the image file
and it should ask you for a password, when the correct password
is entered it should open up like a disk image.
Roam through it and copy your personal documents to a shared folder or
a new users/current users Documents folder.
I do not know if it is possible to restore everything from the file vault image
and replace what is there right now.
As far a preferences are concerned you may have to re-set the preferences for your personal applications all over again.
If anybody else has other opinions, theory's, idea's, and/or suggestions feel free to post them.

I recently uploaded 10.8, but I have a number of VALUABLE old files which I can no longer read because "power PC applications are no longer supported.  How can I retrieve them"?

Here is a post I assembled for another with a similar problem:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3. Upgrade to an Intel compatible versions of your software, or find alternatives that will open your data files;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.
