Finding & Opening PDF files on iPad 4

I am relatively new to iPads and I have a problem with pdf files.  I use itunes to transfer pdf files onto my ipad 4 and I    have iBooks and PDF Expert installed so I can read the the pdf files.  But I also want to be able to be able to save             individual pages from the pdf file.  My problem is this: when I transfer a pdf file onto my ipad, it shows up in iBooks but   not in PDF Expert or in any of the file manager apps I have tried.  In iBooks, I have the pdf files organized in different
folders.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

iPads don't have a file system like a 'normal' computer and iOS is also a sandboxed environment - so each app will need to have its own copy of any document/file that you want to use in it. Some apps allow you to copy files to other apps via 'open in', but iBooks isn't one of them. If you want those PDFs to be accessible within PDF Expert then you will either need to open each one in iBooks and individually email them to yourself (you can then press and hold the attachment in the Mail app so as to use 'open in' to copy them to File Expert), or use the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's Apps tab when connected to your computer's iTunes to copy them from your computer to the app (I'm assuming that that app supports file sharing, it might also support copying of PDFs to/from your iPad via your wifi network).

Have you got iBooks app ?
This is what I use to open and read PDF files using my iPad3.
My source of PDF files are emails.
I tap on them and keep my fingers pressed.
A pop up appears, and I select iBooks to start reading the PDF file.

Will I pad open PDF files? I get nothing when clicking on the document, but have read the iPad 2 will open PDFs without a 3rd party app. Please help.

If they don't have digital rights management on them then you should be able to open them. If they are large PDFs you may have to wait a little while for them to finish downloading.
If they still don't open then you could try closing the Mail app completely and then re-open and see if you can then open them : from the home screen (i.e. not with Mail 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Another option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Opening PDF files on iPad

I'm trying to view blueprints that are on a website saved as PDF files and every time I try to open one, nothing happens. Even holding down on the file, it says "open" but nothing happens either. How do I open it with adobe or how can I get the "open in" option to select adobe? Thanks.

To add more on this, on the website where pdf files are saved. You must tap on the pdf file link. That will download the file and open it in iOS preview. Inside preview you will find Open In option.
Make sur you have Adobe Reader installed on your device.
    Thanks,
    Ankit

Thanks for all (Ocean20 & Courcoul) who replied.
Reset the device did not help me but it does triggers me to attempt to resend the PDF file attachment on email--and it works the 2nd time.  My problem is now solved.
The Adobe Reader is very helpful--it allows me to scroll through the document easily, unlike iBooks, where I cannot scroll straight up or down.

  • IPad 2 incorrectly opens pdf file as an image, Bug? Fix?

Long time user, I do indeed know how to open pdf files; my issue is after a recent update mail no longer handles a pdf file correctly, it opens the file as an image, once opened there is no possibility of properly reading the document in pages, iBooks, etc. the only available option is open as image or save neither option properly handles the file.
I read of a workaround deleting apps designed to open PDFs and tried this with no success... So I am open to another suggestion. Thank you.
    currently running iOS 7.1.2
pdfs option open in iBooks, Messages,  Dropbox.

The first things I would do are quit the Mail app and reset the iPad.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart.

  • Does iPad Air 2 open PDF files in Safari?

Does iPad Air 2 open PDF files in Safari? Having trouble doing so.

As JimHdk stated, all iOS devices do a great job of opening standard PDFs right in Safari.  Note that it is possible for PDF authors to create non-standard PDFs in Adobe Acrobat that will NOT open in Safari but it would be unusual for those PDFs to be posted on a public web site.
Lastly, note that by doing a tap-and-hold on a link for PDF, you can choose to open the PDF in iBooks as well.  This is very helpful if you want to retain a local copy of the PDF on the iOS device for later reference.
What happens when you try to open the PDF in Safari?

  • HT204365 The new IBook version for iPad is not opening PDF files. Is it going to be fixed?

The new iBook 2.1.1 version for iPad is not opening PDF files. is it going to be fixed?

It is not broken. It works for me and it has always worked for me - every version of iBooks in every version of the iOS that I have ever run on my iPad. Therefore - I do not think that it is broken - or it would not work for me - and for countess others using iBooks and the current iOS version 5.1.1.
What have you done or tried to this point in order to get rectify the situation with iBooks? Have you restarted your iPad, quit iBooks completely and then tried again? Rebooted the device? Uninstalled and reinstalled iBooks?
    Anything at all?

i copy a pdf file to ipad by itune, but where can i open it on  iPad?

How did you get the PDF into iTunes, drag to the books library? What PDF apps do you have on the iPad? If you dragged into the books library - and you have iBooks, look in there.
You can email the PDF to yourself and it will open a as mail attachment. You need a compatible app in order to save it, but you can open it from the mail app.

  • Using pages how to insert pdf files on ipad?

using pages how to insert pdf files on ipad?
Anybody have any idea, have pdf files in ibook do not see where to insert pdf's.
Also trying to get word files onto ipad using drop box, do these word files need to be saved in another format?
    Also for pages.
    thnx

No - the Word files do not need to be saved in any other format if you have Pages on your iPad. There are other apps that provide better compatibility than Pages but it will work for you. You have to have DropBox on your PC and the free DropBox app on the iPad to use DropBox to transfer files.
To send the file using DropBox -  make sure DropBox is running on your computer. Then place the file in one of the folders that you have set in your DropBox folder on your PC. Launch DropBox on your iPad and find the folder that you placed the file into and tap on that folder. Find the document and tap on it. It will open in the window on the right. Tap the arrow icon in the upper right corner and select Open in Pages.
If you have pdf files in iBooks that you want to put into Pages you have to email them to yourself and use the Open In feature when you open the email. You cannot send a file from iBooks other than to email it - at least I am not aware of any other way.
