Finding photo by date

It used to be that iPhoto stored your photos buy year, month and then date. And by using the Finder you could find photos taken on a specific day very easily.
My son is now a year old and we want to go back and find the photos we painstakingly took of him on the 12th of each month.
Only by upgrading to iLife 06 the photos are all stored by roll number. Not ideal.
I see that you can scroll through your library and the approx. date flashed up, but this isn't really any good for homing in on a specific date. I know that you can also sort your libarary by date, but again, that isn't that much use for what I need to do. Sorting by roll only shows the date the roll was imported.
Any ideas? Is there a smart search that I don't know about? Like the vast majority of people I tend to dump photos onto my Mac and don't take the time to label them all (deleting out the many bad shots takes long enough!) so there's no keyword searching I can do.
Thanks

At the bottom of the Source pane is a calendar button. It brings up a calendar which will let you find photos by year or month or day.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Finding photos in iPhoto 6.06

Long time Mac user. Long time iPhoto user. First time poster.
What happened to being able to find photos by dates?
I use fotki.com to store photos online. I recently tried to upload photos from the latest version of iPhoto to fotki and discovered that I can no longer find photos in my iphoto library organized by date. Nor can I find the photos organized by iPhoto folders. This is a great nuisance.
In the past, I have directly used Java to upload photos to the fotki site. Then for a brief time I used PictureSync. Now neither works easily. The former requires that to upload photos with my titles and comments, I need to export the photos using extensions to a new folder and then upload.
I haven't been able to get picture sync to work at all lately. It no longer saves the titles and comments and it no longer uploads. For these issues I will email the developer.
    Any assistance, suggestions, etc.?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
When you refer to organising by dates, do you mean in the iPhoto Library Folder, in your Pictures folder? If so, this changed with v6, and photos are now organised as follows: Along with the various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
IF you're using another app to upload, I suggest that you select the pics in the iPhoto Window and then go File -> Export and export them to the desktop, making your choices about naming and size along the way, then upload from there. When the upload is finished, you can trash the files on your desktop - they're copies.
If you talking about finding pics by date in the iPhoto Window - check out the Calendar icon on the lower left. Click on it and a Calendar appears. Click on a date and only the pics taken on that date are shown.

  • How to find all the photos whose date has been modified?

I have recently exported my entire collection of photos and I realized that (perhaps) some of the photos whose dates I have modified in iPhoto, have not been exported with the updated date but maybe the original dates.
Is there a way for me to find all the photos whose dates I modified in iPhoto?

  • How can I synchronize my iPhoto events? my iTunes doesn't read them and with the app Images in the iPad I can only find Photos, Albums, Faces and Places, not Events.

How can I synchronize my iPhoto events? my iTunes doesn't read them and with the app Images in the iPad I can only find Photos, Albums, Faces and Places, not Events.

I had a problem a couple of months ago when iPhotos suddenly rearranged the order of my Events (Why won't iPhoto let me arrange my photos?) .  I was told "Use albums not events - events are not a good way to organize - albums and folder are designed for organisation and are very flexible".
Haha!  I should have paid attention and read between the lines!  My iPhotos were highly organised groupings - not according to date but the way I wanted them - and it was so easy to do!  I see now that if I had them all in albums, as per the Apple Apologist suggestion, I wouldn't have this unholy mess I have been left with just to make iPhone & iCloud users happy.  I am now going through Photos and making Albums (of what used to be in my Events)  ... maybe I'll get this finished before they do another non user friendly update!

  • Cant find photos on time machine

My hard drive crashed and now is fixed. I can't find photo library from time machine to retrieve them. I had about 700 photos for 08 and cant find them.

Were the photos in iPhoto? You should be able to open iPhoto then enter Time Machine and browse your iPhoto library for any date for which you have a backup. If the missing photos are not there, are there other photos there or is your entire iPhoto library mia?

  • Can't find photo's when trying to sync ipad to itunes

can't find photo's when sycing ipad to itunes

I also am having problems.  I have the newest ipad (4 and mini both) and also all software is up to date.  My itunes is 11.0.5 which is the most up to date version.  First off my ipad has over 7 GB of photos on it which is taking up too much space.  I want to delete my Photo Library which is apparently all photos off my laptop that got synced to my ipad.  The ipad itself will not allow a delete option in this Photo Library.  Additionally the new version of itunes does NOT have a Photo tab or option to click or otherwise which photos to sync.  It's as if photos through itunes was removed in their new software version.  Anyway...... I can not delete or remove from my ipads the photos that came from my main computer.... the only photos able to be deleted are those that I actually took from my ipad.  This is also true for my husbands iPhone 5....   Please help   Thank you

It's says that file does not exist. How come? And why does it still show the image info.?
Where can i find those files (i have a daily backup)
The original image files are missing form your iPhoto library or iPhoto cannot find them, because the link to the originals has been broken. The image info is stored in the internal libraries, independent of the original files. That is, why you are still seeing them.
I restored the whole library from my backup.
Try restoring from an older backup, from before you first noticed the problem.
How large is the library, that you restored? Is the file size large enough to hold all your photos, or has the size been reduced?  If the library is still large, the photos may still be inside, even if iPhoto cannot find them.
It's says that file does not exist. How come?
What happened, before your iPhoto library got deleted? Which applications have you been running, or which new software have installed or upgraded?  Have you moved the library to a different disk or tried to use it from different user account or access it over the network?

  • Finding photos is daunting

Is it true that the only way to serch for photos in iphoto from another application is by date? Here's my problem: I have thousands of photos that I used to be able to search based on the folder I created for them in iPhoto. Now the only way i can find them is by date, but I don't know when I took thses photos as they span several years. I never bothered to label them during import over the years because I always organized them by putting them in folders in iPhoto. Now I can't search by folder in iPhoto 5.0.4. Please, someone please tell me I can still search by folder. Apple has always been ahead of the curve when it came to searching. Now it takes me way too much time to find photos from other apps. I end up going into iphoto, finding the pic, dragging it into the new app or to my desktop, and then importing from there. These are extra steps not required in earlier versions iphoto. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks.

    Hi chandler,
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
    Do this for each album.
    Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.

  • 'Film Rolls' View loses sort order when finding photos via Keywords or text

I have my iPhoto Library sorted by Film Roll so when I select 'Library' in the source list I see my rolls listed in date order in the viewing area.
If I try and find photos using the keywords pane or the search field the rolls which match are displayed in the viewing area but the order they are listed is no longer according to their date but some (seemingly) random order.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I find that if I have my rolls sorted by Film roll and Ascending (by roll date) the keyword search results will have the rolls in the correct chronological order.
However if I change the sort order to Descending , the search order remains as Ascending by roll date.
If you create a Smart album for a keyword search then you can sort the photos by any criteria you'd like: Date, Keyword (redundant), Rating or Title and Ascending or Descending.
    Do you Twango?

  • Order photos by date taken

    Hi all,
I have a problem on my Mac is that when I organise my old photos by date created, it says "2009" and then lists the rest of the files in name order. Is there a way to organise these photos by date taken; i.e. so I see the ones that were created first or maybe by saying 2 December 2009 instead of just 2009?. Or like Date Taken in Windows Explorer?
    Thanks,
    radster01

You can't use that metadata in the Finder, but if your files were created on the date taken, you can Sort or Arrange by Date Created.
If you really want to organize by Date Taken (from the EXIF data), then use iPhoto. That is the program that organizes Photos.
Regardless, you are Arranging by Date Created, not Sorting.
Arrangement is a Grouping of like things. When you Arrange by a Date, it groups them by Today, Yesterday, Current Week, Month, and then by Year thereafter.
If you want to Sort by Date Created, hold down the Option key when selecting the button or menu item. The options will change from Arrange to Sort.
You can set both at same time from the View Options for the window (View menu, Show View Options).
You can Arrange independent of Sort, and Sort independent of Arrange (set Arrangement to None), or you can do both. If you Arrange by one criteria, you can then sort the items in each group by another criteria.
In your case, you can set the Arrangement to None, then the Sort to Date Created.
Or, if you like the groupings, but also want the files in the group sorted by Date Created, Set both Arrangement and Sort to Date Created.

  • Using Spotlight to find photos named in iPhoto

I have iPhoto 4 but am upgrading to 6 soon. Reading about how iPhoto organizes photos has been very helpful. I think I can get used to having to use iPhoto to manage my photos (how Windows of it!), although I do not like the idea of a photo having a different name in iPhoto than in the Finder. For instance, I use Spotlight a lot, but it does not seem to find the names of photos in iPhoto. Is there a way to use Spotlight to find photos in iPhoto?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Spotlight will not find photos outside of the Search in the iPhoto Window. It doesn't index the library6.iphoto file. So, titles comments and keywords etc are not indexed.
I think I can get used to having to use iPhoto to manage my photos (how Windows of it!),
You don't have to use iPhoto you know. But if you do, finding your pic files is very easy.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.
although I do not like the idea of a photo having a different name in iPhoto than in the Finder.
iPhoto is a photo organiser, not a file organiser. If you're concerned with file names, stick to the Finder. Or name the files before importing them to iPhoto. Other than that, find them visually, or by date, comment, title in the iPhoto Window.

Can I find photos from an entire event that seem to have disappeared?

    Larry,
I have a Mac Book Pro  2.53 GHz  Mid 2009
    Using OS X lion 10.75
I don't know what version of iphoto....just what was originally installed but I use an external storage drive for my photos and use time machine for back up.
I loaded the photos Friday night- thought they went into an event, deleted photos from my camera (dumb, I know) then in the morning a grey box with event date shows palm tree and sunset image but no photos.

  • Arranging photos by date modified without sections, is it possible?

Before mountain lion I always arranged my photos by date modified (newest at the top) and they would be all in one window, all in neat little icons.... Now I can arrange by date modified BUT they show in separate sections which I absolutely hate! Is there any way to get rid of the sections? I want the old way back with  the photos from various dates all in one window arranged from most recent to earlier.  So far this (and no window shade) are my only complaints about Mountain Lion. And I made the move from Leopard to this quite easily. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those things I cannot change but thought I'd ask the experts anyway. Thanks all!

Unfortunately, no. Once you choose to sort a Finder window by any of the date options, the items will always be separated by those dividers into periods of time. I didn't like it at first, but it's actually pretty helpful for quickly finding what you were recently working on.
