Finding photos, music, etc from previous home folder

Alright. I screwed up by renaming my homefolder by accident. Despite much good advice and references to many good articles by the honorable members on this board, I have not been able to restore the contents of my original home folder.
Here's what I need to do now, manually, I think:
1. Find and import all my old email messages.
2. Tell iTunes how to find all the music that was in my home folder before the gaff.
3. Find my old photos and tell iPhoto how to find them.
4. Re-register applications that I had purchased that no longer recognize my computer.
Anyone have instructions that a beginner could follow?
Many thanks,
Kelly Haley

I know this stuff is still on my machine. I can search and find it, I just don't know how to get my apps to find it on their own!

If you can find all those things, you are more than halfway there.
Open a Finder window to the location where your old files are located. For example, if you used default settings, your iTunes music library files should be at
<startup drive>/Users/<OLD user name>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/
You can follow the path more easily if you go to the View menu (in Finder) and select +Show path bar+. Now, open a second Finder window to
<startup drive>/Users/<NEW user name>/Music/iTunes/
There should be another +iTunes Music+ folder there that is empty. Move the OLD +iTunes Music+ folder (drag and drop) to the NEW iTunes folder (where the NEW +iTunes Music+ folder already exists). Finder will ask if you want to replace the existing folder. Select OK to do so.
Now launch iTunes. I don't think iTunes will automatically recognize the new content (maybe it will). If it does not, select your Music library in the left sidebar of the iTunes window. To get iTunes to recognize all your existing media, drag and drop that just moved +iTunes Music+ folder from the Finder window to the main pane of the iTunes window. Let iTunes do its thing, which may take a while if you have a lot of songs.
iPhoto should be a similar process. Find your files under old user, find the equivalent location under the new user, move the folder with the files to the new user, make iPhoto recognize the content at the new user's location. I don't use iPhoto too much...
For Mail, the Mail data folder is in the user folder's Library folder.

  • How to change the default location of 'Music', 'Pictures' in my home folder

IMAGINE I have 2 hard disk partitions on the SAME hard disk,
one is called 'Macintosh HD' and the other is called 'My Data'.
    The Plan:
In the 'Macintosh HD', there are (1) system files & (2) users' settings.
In the 'My Data', there are all the music, pictures, etc.
For example, the 'Macintosh HD' has 40GB and the 'My Data' has 120GB.
All I want to do is to *separate the SYSTEM and my DATA* _without migrating my home folder_ inside 'Macintosh HD' which contains folders called 'Music', 'Pictures'... to the partition 'My Data'.
_+*I want to separate the system files and my data incase I need to reinstall the Mac OS X while leaving all my data untouched.*+_
So the way I should do (I guess) is to leave my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' empty,
and create files called, for example, 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition.
Then _redirect the files 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD'_ to _'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition_.
In Windows XP or Windows 7, you can redirect those as using the methods below:
    (1) http://i41.tinypic.com/2rorkhx.jpg
    (2) http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/18629-user-folders-change-default-location. html
But I just don't know how to do that in Mac OS X, it seems that Mac OS X doesn't even provide a way for users to do so:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=336192
I saw a reply in macrumors forum and tried to move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders,
but it turned out that those files were being copied, not moved.
So I can't move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. to the partition 'My Data' and make aliases of them which can be put in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD'.
So, are there only 3 options for me too choose?
    (1) stop trying to fight Apple and Mac OS X on where it puts things, just put all the things in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD', using only 1 partition
    (2) move my home folder to the other disk partition, in this case, the partition 'My Data'
    (3) can't redirect the location of Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders in my home folder in the 'Macintosh HD', but just simply put things in the 'My Data'.
    Thanks in advance!

    Here's the easy solution:
    1. Copy the folders you want on the My Data partition.
    2. Verify all files copied OK, then delete the same folders on Macintosh HD.
    3. Make an alias for each of the folders you have moved.
    4. Copy the aliases to your Macintosh HD/Users/Home folder.
    5. Delete the space and "alias" from each of the aliases so the have the exact same names as the originals.
DO NOT do this with the /Home/Library/ folder as the above will not work with that folder.
When you attempt to delete the folders you have moved the OS will complain that it cannot delete them because they are needed by OS X. This is normal. In order to delete the original folders and rename the aliases you will need to boot the computer from another drive or from the OS X installer disc. But for the latter you will need to run the Terminal (from the installer's Utilities menu) and use Unix commands to delete the folders and rename the aliases. If you know how to use the Terminal then the entire operation can be done from the command line. See the following:
    1. Boot the computer into single-user mode.
    2. At the prompt enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /Users/yourusername
    mv /Documents "/Volumes/My Data/rest of path/Documents"
Repeat the above line replacing "Documents" with the names of the other folders you are moving. The "mv" command actually moves the folders rather than copying them.
    ln -s "/Volumes/My Data/rest of path/Documents" /Users/Documents
Repeat this line for the other folders replacing "Documents" with the names of the other folders.
You may find printing out the command line routine using a large mono-spaced font useful in assuring you spot the spaces in each command line. Note that the quotes used in the command lines above are required.
Enter "reboot" without quotes to restart the computer.

Apple Senior tech lady deleted all my external drive data while sorting out other problem. How can I restore all my photos , music etc back to my Mac Pro?(I am so scared, I haven't connected iPhone to sync! Please help)

It was tele tech. I couldn't open my Page Numbers etc. Frist tech chat idiot - following dumping few things in bin, asked me yo upgrade to Yosemite. But the problem still persists. This morning I was asked to do it via telephone and like yesterday, after wasting 20 min, I was put to this apparent Tech Queen ( my foot!). She eventually decided to reinstall  Yosemite asked me to connect my external drive while I connected to her. She was moving cursor asking me to move files and delete and I followed her like a dummy. It took 3/4 hours and she called me 3 times once the lengthy process was completed. I suspected from the beginng for the fact that why should be asking me to click all my backup from the very beginning! Eventually she said I deleted... Or someone else or may be my children ! It was a blatant lie. I run my small business from home and I was simply staying in front of the Mac whole day! Children were at school. Then she said I must have used another computer! I only have laptop and the iPad. I will talk to their manager first thing in the morning. In the mean time please let me know as to how can I transfer photos, music etc back to my laptop from my Iphone and IPad .? I am will connect to laptop as I am worried the new BLANK iPhoto may supersede iphone/iPad stuff? Will it? Please let me know. I am not a very tech savvy person. My son who could help me, is in Manchester Uni and Inam in London.

  • How can I set up two iPhones with the same contact, photos, music etc... but a different sim card and phone number. They will both be my phones, but one will be for use in other countries.

How can I set up two iPhones with the same contact, photos, music etc... but a different sim card and phone number. They will both be my phones, but one will be for use in other countries.

Phone A = phone with information you want duplicated
Phone B = phone that you want to copy from A
    Backup Phone A.
Wipe Phone B using these instructions. What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Phone B should be on the 'Hello' screen. Do not swipe it. Launch iTunes. Plug in Phone B.
When iTunes asks if you want to set up as new phone or restore from backup, choose restore from backup of Phone A.
After this setup, any changes to one phone (i.e. adding a contact, downloading an app) will have to be manually duplicated on the second phone, if that is your desire). Making changes to one phone will not affect the other after setup.

How can I set up my Mac for two users to share photos, music etc?

On the Mac with the libraries you want to share:
iTunes Preferences click on the Sharing tab and put a tick in 'Share by library on local network'.
iPhoto Preferences click on Sharing and put a tick against 'Share my photos'.
When launching the same apps on other Macs on the network the libraries should be available, listed on the left.

  • I have a new iMac running iTunes 10.4 in OS 10.6.8, and a new Mac Air running iTunes 10.4 in Lion.  I was able to transfer all my music etc. from the iMac onto the Air, but cannot figure out how to get the Playlists from the iMac to the Air.  iTunes Help

I have a new iMac running iTunes 10.4 in OS 10.6.8, and a new Mac Air running iTunes 10.4 in Lion.  I was able to transfer all my music etc. from the iMac onto the Air, but cannot figure out how to get the Playlists from the iMac to the Air.  iTunes Help says File >Library >Export playlist and choose XML, or to save a copy of all your playlists, File > Library > Export Library, "the Exported info is saved in XML format."  Then it says, "to import an iTunes playlist, File > Library > Import Playlist".  Now I am assuming I do that import part on the Air, but when I try it doesn't recognize anything that can be imported - what am I missing??? Aside from a clue...

Thanks, Jim, for taking the time, but the reply is unfortunately vague in the exact area of my confusion!  "you need to copy that file to your new computer..."  Well, the Import/Export instructions make it seem as if the two computers should be able to communicate this file thru wifi, but that's the linkage I can't seem tocreate with Import/Export.  Should I instead email a copy to myself (thats what applecare suggested)?  Copy it to and from a thumb drive?  But then place the file where?  And the article was helpful, but should I be trying to move the Library file or the Library.xml file (as iTunes Help suggests)?  Sorry to be so clueless about it...I suppose I buy Apple in the hopes of not having to think about this stuff, which approach seems not to be serving me well. Thanks again for your time!

Always backup your important data before upgrading to a new Mac OS X.
Lion doesn't erase the drive but better to be safe than sorry.
And run Disk Utility  (Applications/Utilities). Verify and if necessary repair the startup disk before upgrading.

    Where did you put them?
These are not part of the sync process at all, as the manual tells you.  You should be importing them to your comptuer regularly as you would with any digital camera.

    Thanks

have you backed up in the past with iTunes or iCloud? If so, it is possible that you will not lose this information, but I cannot guarantee anything.
Check for backups in iTunes by going to Preferences > Devices > Device backups
If you do not see any, and your iPad is still in working order, check for iCloud backups in Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup
Also, if your iPad is still in working order, you can backup with itunes before restoring : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766

If I make a new iTunes account will I lose my app music etc from my old account

    1. No.
    2. Not as long as you're still syncing it with the same iTunes library. If you meant iTunes libraries and not iTunes Store accounts to begin with, you need to use the Transfer Purchases function in iTunes.

Go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings.  This will erase your phone.  Then you will go through the setup screens again as you did when your phone is new, and when given the option, select Restore from iCloud Backup.  Or choose a backup in itunes if that's where it is.
