Finding templates not installed in default location, then making them work

I recently installed Leopard, upgraded it to 10.5.5, then installed a brand new upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2 (and therefore FCP6). I put all the media, templates, etc on an external drive, as the installer prompts you to do if you wish. Fired up FCP for the first time: no sign of the Master Templates (aka Motion Templates). And no instructions among the 2,033 pages of the FCP user manual of how to tell the app where to look for them.
Next I put an alias of the relevant folder into the default /Library/Application Support/FInal Cut Studio/ folder, and tried again. This time FCP saw the templates, but like so many other correspondents on this discussion board, when viewed in the Viewer, or placed on the Timeline: nothing. Black.
Then I ran Software Update and downloaded, I think, about eight updates to one Final Cut Studio component or another. Opened FCP: bingo! Templates all singing and dancing.
Finally I removed the alias from the Library folder -- and sure enough, FCP is now seeing the templates on the external drive without any help.
So it looks like completely updating OS and FCS does work -- at least in my case. I'd love to know if I'd done the app updating right from the start whether FCP would have found the templates on the external drive, or whether I kind of kick-started it by using the alias trick.

If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
One procedure that resolves the black templates is a complete software update to a clean install of OS and FCS2.
If it is working, that's great. I don't advise using the alias approach because you only have one FW bus on the MacBook Pro, and you don't want it accessing media files and templates, etc. simultaneously.

Apple Works Install Issue;"Default location required for install not found"

I am a new mac user. Just bought a Mac Air. Trying to install Apple Works 6.2.9. I downloaded, but when I try to install, I get a message "The default location required for this install could not be found. This install will be cancelled." Any ideas? Thanks!

The download isn't the complete application, it's an updater intended to be applied to an installed earlier version. AppleWorks is no longer sold by Apple but may be available on eBay or other retails. It has been 'end-of-lifed' and there is no support for it, however it works well on current Macs.
However given the situation you are probably better off getting something modern, such as iWork.

Itunes library files do not move from default location on windows xp - help?

The hard drive that holds "my documents" is too small to hold my itunes library. I have followed the directions to move the library files and itunes copied the library files over automatically to the new internal hard drive. I have confirmed this under the "advanced preferences" under preferences under the edit menu. On restarting itunes, it re-creates a blank library file in the old default location and changed the folder back to the default one. The current work around I have is to leave the library files in the old location and periodically move the content to the location I want to prevent the old hard drive from getting full.
Any suggestions?

Itunes 9 will not instal on XP Pro - itunes 7 does work?

I have installed Quick 7 as stand alone, it worked. Then installed itunes 7 and this worked.
downloaded itunes 9 standalone. Installer gets to just after asking for country and then says ' encountered unpected error, install failed, please try later.'.
I have VDScritp lastest. regedit the .dll as per the apple support.
Any ideas?

Apologies about the delay. I've been brooding.
Although we don't know where the specific relevant keys are on modern versions of iTunes, there's a shotgun approach we can take to dealing with them, which has a reasonable chance of success in this case. The complicating factor in your case is that you've got a 64-bit Windows. So there's an extra hoop to jump through.
The basic approach is the procedure from the following weblog entry:

The complicating factor is that we have to make an additional edit to the reset.cmd file.
When you're in Notepad, replacing the two YOURUSERNAME values with the name of your Windows 7 user account, in the first line of the batch file, replace the:
%programfiles%
... with:
%ProgramFiles(x86)%
(On a 64-bit Windows system, subinacl is installed in a different location than on 32-bit systems. So unless we make that change, the reset.cmd isn't going to be able to find subinacl and the reset.cmd won't work.)
While you're in Notepad editing the file, make sure each of the nine lines of the file start of a new line. (Sometimes they get smooshed up together on a single line, and then again the reset.cmd won't work.)
I'd strongly suggest setting up a System Restore point immediately prior to running the reset.cmd. There's instructions on that in the following document:

Finder does not remember last save location.

Hi all,
When you save a file into a folder, the finder default remembers this location so that this is the new default patch when you save or save as the file again or save a new file.
On a business mac, this is not working for one account. The other account that runs on the make does not have any problem.
Anyone an idea how to fix this for the user?

Azure Tools and Templates Not Installed to VS2012 with VS2013 Side by Side Installation

I have VS 2012 and VS 2013 Ultimate editions installed side by side and have installed Azure SDK 2.2 followed by 2.3. Until I started using BizTalk Services all my Azure work has been in VS2013.
Going back to VS2012 for BizTalk Services stuff I soon noted I have no Azure node in Server Explorer and then looked and see that there are no Azure project templates either. I might guess the Azure SDKs just configure the latest VS instance.
How can I get the Azure SDK to properly config VS2012 when I have VS2013 installed?

Just recently iTunes has been giving me this error message: "iTunes helper was not installed correctly." And then another message on top of that: "iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 14001)

im getting the same error,but the update windows .NET framework is still not working, downloaded 2 Microsoft .net framework as suggested by apple support KB article, no go, didnt try creating a new user yet but since its still not working as tested its no use.please help need to update get my iTunes back and update my devices to iOS 5. reinstalled Quicktime and give me error : Please install Apple Application Support. Why is NTP not installed by default on VM images?

Looking at some of my Ubuntu 14.04 images, the time is out of sync by over a minute (using time.nist.gov or us.pool.ntp.org). This is sorta... idiotic. Is there a specific reason the VM images on Azure don't have ntp turned on by default? And why is the
underlying hypervisor platform not providing properly sync'd time anyways?

Azure VMs and services take their time directly from the underlying Hyper-V platform upon boot and from that point forward the clock is maintained by the service. If you want to have true time sync across a distributed system you can
do this at the application layer and/or with a service referencing a singular time server.

Acrobat XI wont install to default location

Hi there
I am having difficulty installing Acrobat from the cloud to my laptop.
I have been able to install In Design, Photoshop etc with no problems, but Acrobat gets to 99% and fails. The error message is

Run the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool and the Acrobat Cleaner Tool again and try once more. Otherwise check your disk management and reassign/ disable the drive as the message says...

Lack of sound after Window 7 (64) installation into iMac OX 10.6.7. Tried to install driver from Snow Lepard disc (Cirrus 64).Wizard installed driver. No sound, Device Manager indicated that "driver is not installed" but also that the"device is working"

I don't know how to proceed. I didn't have sound after installing Windows 7 inot iMac OX 10.6.7 (64bit) After unsuccessful attempt to upgrade the driver from the BootCamp file, I deleted the driver from the Sound and Game controlled hoping that I would allow me to automatically install the correct driver from Boot camp.
Now the Sound Video Game controller disappeared from the Device Manager
How can I find out which is the correct sound driver for my computer (The Speaker Properties only say:WIndows)?
How can I install it without seing the Sound and Game controller in the Device Manager?

When you say "manually download", you mean from the BootCamp File on Snow Leopard, or from the Internet.
My additional problem is that the "Sound and Video Game Controller" disappeared from the Device Manager when I removed the previous driver. I don't find the place where I can reistall the new driver.

I would try two things first clear your cache. [[How to clear the cache]]
Then if that doesn't help start in the [[Safe Mode]] , an easy way to start safe mode is close Firefox then press shift while clicking the Firefox icon it will open in the safe mode.

Safari says Flash plug-in not installed, but it is. Same page works in Fox.

If I go to a page that has a Flash movie that sniffs to see if I have the correct Flash player, it says that I don't have the plug-in, but I do. If I open the same page in FireFox, the Flash movie plays fine.
Flash movies that are embedded without the sniffer work fine in Safari.

I do have plug-ins enabled. If I go to a Flash movie that doesn't sniff, it plays just fine. All of those Google ads embedded in various Web sites work fine, for example.

ITunes library not in default location doesn't show up as shared library

My iTunes library will not show up on my network as a shared library. It is not in the default location for Windows (Documents and Settings\<user>\My Documents\My Music\iTunes). I can find no reference anywhere that this should prevent a library from being seen by other iTunes users, yet that seems to be the case.
I have two other iTunes libraries on computers on my local network. Both show up on each other's machines, so this isn't a firewall issue. All my machines are running the same level of Windows XP Pro.
On one machine, I actually created a library in another location, then shared it. It was not visible. Once I recreated the library in the default location, it was again visible.
Does anyone have a any ideas how I can troubleshoot this? I really don't want to copy/move what is now a very large library and there's nothing to indicate that this shouldn't work.

Normally all you need to do is copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on one computer to <User's Music> on the other. If you've made things more complicated see make a split library portable.
