Finding you iTunes Library folder (via "Go" menu)

I had a heck of a time finding the answer to this so I thought I put it on the Apple site to help others.  For whatever reason if you need to find your iTunes Library folder, here's the article that helped me, in particular since under the latest OS (as of this date OS X Mavericks) you don't see "Go" menu for the Finder.  You simply need to press Shift+Cmd+G to get the Go to window, and then type /Library.  Tada!  Here's the entire article for more: http://www.macworld.com/article/161156/2011/07/view_library_folder_in_lion.html
Thanks Dan Franks!

Those TMP files point to a software conflict between itunes and some other program on your PC.
It could be security software like Norton, itunes plug-ins like lastfm, other media management software like Sony or Zune, speed-up-your PC kind of software like UniBlue, who knows what you have on your PC? ..... besides you.
Anyway, what is happening, is itunes closes and saves the ITL and XML files, and it makes a TMP file while doing so. When itunes finishes it tries to clean up and delete the TMP file, but something is not letting it.
You can try using MSCONFIG or SysInternal's FileMon to find what is causing this. Those methods are for advanced PC users, so post back if you want more info.
I see you are on itunes v6. If you had at least v7, you could just move your ITL file to another folder and fake the other software out. That is an easy workaround for new PC users, but it won't work with itunes v6.
With itunes 7 and later, you can press and HOLD the shift key to select a different itunes library:

  • The iTune Remote App has stopped finding my iTunes library when connected to wifi from my main router, but works fine when connected via second wifi router on the same network (different SSID)

I'm running iTunes Remote App from a couple of iPhone 5's and a first generation iPod Touch. iTunes is running on a PC - Windows 7. My home network runs two Wifi Routers, each with a different SSID. I've had no problems with the Remote app running this set up for the last 8 months but recently the App can only find my iTunes library when the iPhone/iPod is connected via one specific router, when connected to the network via the other router, no iTunes library is found. I'm also running an Apple TV and it's the same as the iTunes Library, only visible via the one SSID.
Everything else seems to work fine when connected via either router, eg Internet on the iPhones (definitely via wifi)
I've tried renewing the lease on the iPhone wifi connection, restarting everything.....several times.....
It used to work fine, this only seems to have been a problem in recent weeks
Any help or advice would be much appreciated
    Thanks
    Ian

It turned out to be the firewall settings on our router. Her machine was sending traffic that our router interpreted as a DoS attack and blacklisted her Airport's MAC address. That's why it would work fine if she switched to Ethernet.

    Hi Monty,
Sorry to say it, but this is normal for Apple TVs. I've owned a TV2 and a TV3, and neither lasted for an entire year. They are quite fragile and of low quality, and as you can see here, quite fussy even when they work. The wi-fi receiver on these are cheap and unreliable.
Consider the $99 an annual rental fee. They rarely work for a whole year, so if you are going to use the platform, you will have to replace them constantly.
Also, when one dies under warranty, never, never send it to Apple for repair. Go to the Apple Store for replacement. I sent my ATV3 in for warranty repair using a box sent to me by Apple, and although FedEx tracking showed it was accepted by Apple, it was never seen again. Apple won't replace it or even return my calls.

  • External hard drives, media folders and iTunes Library folder

    Hello All,
I have an external hard drive with all of my iTunes media files and am wondering if I should also have the iTunes Library folder and related iTunes files on this same drive. Is this the preferred arrangement? It seems that backups would be greatly simplified.
If it is a preferred solution that all these files reside on one drive location, how do I set these files to the external drive?
Thanks in advance for any assistance?

no, i back up my iTunes folder (which is devoid of media content as my music files etc. are on the external).
the +apple of my eye+ is the +*iTunes library file+*
which is the heart (database) of the iTunes library (which is the whole thing: media files, support files, artwork folder)
while your media files are on an external drive which you mirror to a second drive.
    exactly.
Do you use Chronosync to mirror your externals?
    yes.
    Have you consider a NAS?
well, i have a test library on an external USB drive hanging off my TC. it's not a NAS exactly but pretty similar.
i found that a firewire 800 external HD @ 7200 rpm provides superior speed to any networked library which is important (to me) if you e.g. stream HD movies to an TV and don't want to experience a lot of buffering.

My "itunes library" folder is empty.  My libray music (prior to upgrading itunes) is now in an .xml file in my itunes location under my music.  How do I extract/convert this .xml file to a Itunes database and restore my Itunes music library??? Thanks, Tom

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

I can't enable Home Sharing in both PC, iPhone 4S and IPad 2. i enabled them but my IPhone couldn't find my iTunes Library in my PC

    The iPhone 5 requirements are:
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
    iTunes 10.7 or later
So, upgrade your MacBook system to Snow Leopard OS 10.6.x Then you can sync both devices.

  • I am having trouble updating Itunes saying that it can't find the Itunes.msi folder how can I get it make a path for it.

I am having problems updating Itunes and it is saying that it cannot find this itunes.msi folder when I even redownloaded the installing package from the internet cause it could not find it after trying to update it from the program itself. What do I do in order for it to update or download the updated version of Itunes??

    Hi, HeWhoIsNtNmd.
Thank you for the question.  To resolve this I would recommend to uninstall iTunes and all of it's components.  As you are receiving the iTunes.msi error, see the steps in the first article below.
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" alert when removing Apple software in Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3704
You will only need to process the above mentioned steps when uninstalling or updating a program and receive the .msi error.
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
Once you have completely uninstalled all components, download iTunes and reinstall.

  • Quick way to remove duplicate files in iTunes Library folder?

I "consolidated my iTunes Library", which caused iTunes to place duplicate mp3/mp4 files in my iTunes library folder (I assume it copied them all over from my backup drive) which has doubled the size of my iTunes Library folder.
Keep in mind, that iTunes actually shows only one copy of each song/video within the app. It's only that the actual files have been doubled on my hard drive. iTunes is only using half of those files.
Is there a way to quickly identify and delete the duplicated files on my hard drive that aren't being used by iTunes?

This information from Doug should help you decide what you can use.

  • Moving iTunes Library folder to External Hard Drive?

My iTunes Library folder is currently on my (internal) hard drive, which is very low on space. A great deal of my music is on my external hard drive, which iTunes accesses just fine (I've not, of course, chosen to copy the music into the iTunes Library folder). My question is, is there an easy way to change the iTunes Library folder to a directory on my external hard drive and ensure that new things I download such as purchased music or apps will download to that directory? I changed the folder as shown in the Advanced tab of Preferences to my external drive, tried downloading an app, and it still downloaded to the internal hard drive.
I'm starting to get a bit claustrophobic about space left on my main drive, and I'd like to relieve it if possible. Thanks!
    EazyCheeze

In Windows, you go through File >> Library >> Organize Library. here you can choose to consolidate your library. this should do the job.. alternatively you could take a look at this blog..
    http://www.tuaw.com/2006/09/19/how-to-keep-your-itunes-library-on-an-external-ha rd-drive/
Even though its step by step on mac you should be able to figure it out from there.

  • I need to find my iTunes Music folder!

I'm a Final Cut Express user, recently upgraded from Tiger to Mountain Lion and then partway back to Snow Leopard, which is working with my FCE 3.5.  Now I need access to my music,  which I manually imported from my CDs five years ago, and use for soundtracks (these are underwater videos.)
I thought I had backup - I use Carbon Copy Cloner and have bootable clones of both Tiger and Mountain Lion, which should contain the iTunes Music Folder.  But the folders I can find don't seem to contain any tracks.
Before I make the (probably correct) assumption that I somehow never did have the music backed up, I'd appreciate any ideas about where to look besides Library & Users folders.  I do still have all the CDs - probably wouldn't take more than a few weeks...
    Thanks for any ideas.
    Sharron

Well, I did find the iTunes Music folder on the Tiger clone (MBP had to be booted up from the clone to access the folder) and figured out where Snow Leopard's iTunes wanted its music imported  (the Automatically Move to iTunes folder).  Couldn't move the whole Music Folder at once, though it's only about 11GB, but I could move whole albums over in bunches & got about 1/3 of the music transferred in a couple of hours, alternating startup drives to shovel it along.
The transferred music worked OK - I converted tracks to AIFF for a FCE soundtrack, inserted them in a sequence, fiddled around with simple fades etc. Began to feel confident.  But then Snow Leopard started crashing - can't imagine it has anything to do with iTunes.
I've had about as  much of this as I can enjoy, as the fox said...
But I do appreciate your clarification of the storage habits of iTunes.

  • ITunes moving songs to wrong iTunes Library Folder

    Hi All,
Just upgraded to 10.1. I have my iTunes library on an external drive. Upon upgrade to 10.1 iTunes created a new iTunes Library Folder on my internal drive (/iTunes Library/Music) and moved 103 of my 8000 songs into that new folder. I've never had or needed that folder before. I have iTunes set to both manage my library and copy songs to my iTunes music folder (correctly points to the external drive in iTunes). So every time I try to add these 103 songs to iTunes, they do not get copied to my external drive library folder, they get re-copied into the internal disk folder that iTunes creates and iTunes will not play them (get the exclamation point). Even if I try to trash the internal iTunes Library folder, iTunes just automatically recreates it and adds those same 103 songs back in. If I copy/paste the songs into the external library and add them to iTunes - iTunes moves them back to the internal drive and will not play them! Some of the songs are purchased from iTunes, some are not. Only 1 song is DRM protected and some but not all songs are iTunes plus upgraded songs.
Anyone have any idea why iTunes might be behaving this way only with those 103 songs?
    Thanks!
