Fingerprint reader functionality in Arch; possible?

Thus far I am loving my first (actual) install of Arch, but am begginning to miss the use of my fingerprint reader. If theres no way it will work, I suppose thats ok, but I feel like its a waste of some nifty hardware.
I have a Thinkpad X60s. Let me know if any other information is needed, and what I'd need to install/configure to get the fingerprint scanner working (if its even possible).

Sorry, long day yesterday...
I installed it through pacman, added "uinput" to "modules" in rc.conf, then used "tf-tool --verify" to scan my fingers. It worked perfectly to that point, but what exactly do I have to do to make it so that it asks for a scan on login? Theres so many distros listed on the thinkwiki page, I'm not sure what I need to do.
Read up on the pam_fprint module for pam.
Edit: btw, fingerprint is horribly insecure, a good password is way better.

  • Possible to upgrade to a fingerprint reader? (X220)

    Hello.
I'm getting a ThinkPad X220 soon, and I was wondering if I upgrade to a fingerprint reader. The one I will recieve comes with the stock palmrest, so if I bought a palmrest with the fingerprint reader, would it work with the correct drivers?

First we need a Product Number to know which part of the question is asking for what is slow. SSD will speed up the load processor and usage but if your processor is slow then everything else will be slow with it.

  • Possible firmware problem leading to bricked fingerprint reader on T530

I tried to send this through support channels but they told me there was no way to reach any developers through phone support.  One guy said the developers do read the forums so I am posting this here.
Basically this is what happened: (twice!)
I had pre-boot fingerprint authentication and also swipe to power on enabled on my T530.
Everything worked great until I wanted to be sure I discharged the battery all the way by letting the machine power off from a low battery. The way I did this on previous laptops was to just run memtest86 or something until the battery ran out. but since I use the laptop in UEFI only mode memtest86 doesn't work. so I used the built in lenovo memory diagnostics.  after the laptop powered off. I turned it on again. and it quickly powered back off. Afterwards the fingerprint reader refused to work for anything other than power on and refused to be connected to by the Lenovo fingerprint software.
I originally thought this was because I had turned it back on and the system was talking to the fingerprint reader as part of start up and didn't complete since the power went right back off again..
that is until I managed to break my replacement fingerprint reader. This time I just ran the memory diagnostics as before until it turned itself off. (and didn't try to turn it back on right afterwards) This time it also bricked the fingerprint reader in such a way that caused it to keep connecting and disconnecting from the USB bus somehow.
My theory is that either the UEFI firmware or the embedded system controller is not finishing the conversation with the UPEK touchchip that puts it into the low power swipe to power on mode when the battery is critically low and is causing the device firmware to become confused (the fingerpritn reader is not just a dumb reader, instead it's basically a small embedded computer). It's very easy to re-produce this problem. and I wish I had a way to just submit a bug report to someone instead of posting to a forum.
I now have a working fingerprint reader and I've disabled swipe to power on, hoping that this wont come up again. (I'm also going to avoid doing the memory test until power off thing too obviously...) Still I think it would be a simple fix to make sure it doesn't attempt to talk to the fingerprint reader as part of shutdown if the battery is low.
I still have the other 2 fingerprint readers if anyone at Lenovo wants to take a look at the state this leaves them in (although it should be very easy to re-produce this in house)
aside from this I'm very happy with my Thinkpad and I plan on getting an extended warranty and to also make my next laptop a thinkpad as well (assuming they don't do someting stupid like get rid of the trackpoint/trackpoint mouse buttons or decide to start making the thinkpad small and flimsy)

Yes I tried that. I also even did research into the upek (now owned by authentec) chip and found a dagnostics utility that also pretty much confirmed that the chip was failing to communicate. (and gave the same information that the lenovo fingerprint reader gave me) The. First one I killed could be seen but was stuck in the swipe to power on mode and wanted to be authenticated to somehow (error is could not authenticate pasport) before it would do anything else. And both the firmware and the fingerprint software had no luck doing so.
The second one I killed behaved differently, It shows up on the usb bus for a few seconds and then dissconnects and then does it all over again forever. In both cases I believe the firmware inside the fingerprint reader is being confused in a a way that is persistent across power cycles. Replacing the reader restores normal operation again. i didnt bother with thee diagnostics tool the second time incase you think I killed them with that. This time around it had problems booting and had to lift up the keyboard and unplug the cable from the palmrest, reboot and disable the fingerprint reader port before plugging the cable back in to restore normal operation to my system. otherwise it would boot only part of the time. (you could also disable pre-boot fingerprint support and it would also boot fine but then you would see a steady log of it attaching and detacthing in both windows and linux, which ofcourse is annoying)
I have saved those two parts and will ship them to you if you want to look at them.
I seem to have a knack of running into strange corner cases like this since I always seem to use my computers/software just different enough from the averge person to run into things the developers didn't consider.
I have no idea if this thing can happen any other way than the system powering off inside the memory test utility. but I would bet it is possible in other cases and might as well be looked into.
I would bet when you try to re-produce it that it can only be re-produced with the swipe to power on feature enabled. am also pretty sure that what my guess is is likely correct, that when the system forces itself off with a low battery either the UEFI firmware, or some embedded controller talks to the chip to enable the swipe to power on feature and it's powering off before the fingerprint reader is ready when the battery is critically low, screwing up the state of the firmware on the fingerprint reader chip.  when I was doing searching around I was really hoping there was some vendor tool that could reset the chip, but no such luck at least nothing that's public. UPEK was bought out by authentec and a lot of their site no longer exists, authentec also seems to be bought out by digital persona and shut down much of the authentec site as well, and seem to be only licensing the IP of authentec to certain people.

  • How to get fingerprint reader to work with passwords on web pages?

I just got my x61 with fingerprint reader.  I have enrolled my fingerprints and am able to use the fingerprint reader to logon to the system.  I would also like to use the reader to bypass password entry on webpages I use frequently, like email.  I think this is a possible function of the fingerprint reader (as is implied in the Lenovo video about the fingerprint reader), but I cannot find any information on how to do this.  Can anyone help?

You can use password manger,It's a part of CSS.

  • X220 Fingerprint Reader Counsumption

    Hi,
i really like the fingerprint reader - power on function but i wonder how high the power consumption is?
Does it stress my battery noticeable  when i don`t use the Notebook for few days?
Thank you and excuse my english

After my X220 is powered off for 24 hours (but fingerprint reader still active), the power meter says about 6% of the battery capacity was consumed (6 cell battery). This means that with the laptop powered off, the fingerprint reader might completely drain a 6 cell battery after 2-3 weeks.
I discovered that after power off (or hibernate), if I briefly pull and reinsert the battery, it seems to completely turn off the fingerprint reader including the LED. When the X220 is turned on the next day, the power meter stays the same. This seems to be a possible workaround. I suggest doing it if you plan to leave your X220 powered off for more than a couple of days.
I hope that Lenovo can fix it to make the fingerprint reader active only while the screen lid is open. There is no reason to leave the fingerprint reader on while the lid is closed. Or turn on the fingerprint reader only for one minute after opening the screen lid. That would preserve battery life even if you leave the lid open.

  • Fingerprint reader problem Envy 15 TS

    Envy 15 TS j-063cl laptop
Windows 8.1 update 1 (shipped with win 8.0)
Sporadically, the blinking light on the figerprint reader would stop working.  Once the light was not working the reader itself would not work.
    This happened last night.
I rebooted the computer and the reader was not blinking, but Windows was receiving bad data from the device because Windows kept registering an incorrect read.
Full power off and battery removal did not change the situation. I then entered in to the BIOS settings hoping that there would be some control in there or a diagnostic function. There is not.
After it booted again, it must have done a full boot (rather than quick boot) and the reader worked, but the light did not.
I started a tech support session with HP. The tech uninstalled SimplePass and removed the fingerprint reader from the device list in the device manager. He updated by system BIOS (F.56) and installed the new SimplePass and hardware driver. (SimplePass Version 8.00.57, Fingerprint driver Version 4.5.228.0)
While it now reads my fingerprints, the light still does not work.
Also, the fingerprints do not appear to be registered with Windows itself, but rather with the SimplePass software.
Now when I see the lock screen, there is a big ugly SimplePass window imposed on it in the upper left region.
Is there a way to make the light work again?
Is there a way to register the prints directly with Windows and/or get rid of the garish white window on the lock screen?
    Thanks

I grasp you were having an issue with the fingerprint reader. You contacted HP support and the updated the bios and updated the driver and the software.  The fingerprint reader now works but the light does not come on.
The fingerprints do not appear to be registered with Windows itself, but rather with the SimplePass software.
On the lock screen you see a Simplepass windows superimposed in the upper left corner.
Have you tried the built in troubleshooter in Windows 8?
I would run a hardware test just to rule that possibility out. Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 8)

  • Can I put a READ function in a TRUE/FALSE case structure?

    Hi,
I have a vi that operates as controller for a mechanical system of motors.  There are several sensors of various types, that provide input to the vi, including encoders, whose period is being measured.  The attached vi is the encoder period measuring part. It measures 15 periods and tells me the average of the 15 with each loop iteration.
In my application, the encoder period measurement is not needed unless the vi knows that ALL THE OTHER sensors in the hardware configuration are measuring values within the desired range.  For example, Sensors A, B and C should all measure between 5-10.  If they are all showing values between 5-10, then, we want the encoder value to read and display.  If only one of the sensors, say A, is measuring 12, then, we don't want the period value to READ or be subsequently processed.  So, it is easy to set up the sensors A, B, C, to give a TRUE or FALSE based on whether they are within range or not, and if all 3 are TRUE, then, that value can easily be passed to the case structure that holds my READ function for the period.  Is this a good way to do this?  The goal is to eliminate unnecessary execution time that the period READ function would consume, as well as all subsequent calculations that are performed on the period value collected.  The period data is of no use if any one of the other sensors is not in the correct range.
If any one of the other sensors is out of range, we want to skip the encoder READ step altogether.  So, it is easy to structure a BOOLEAN in my vi as shown in the attachment.  If I do it this way, will it throw an error, or just skip the READ until the BOOLEAN is true again?  Is there a better way to prevent the READ from happening if one of my other sensor values is not within the correct range?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Sure, you can put a Read inside a case structure. For your application, just check that your sensors are all within range (Comparisons palette), then AND the T/F's and use the result of that for your case structure. (If you are already doing the in-range check, I can't see it here because you have 5 subVIs that I cannot open here.

  • Ubuntu 13.10 on a T440 - Wifi, Sound, Fingerprint reader and TrackPoint issues

I recently got my t440 and put Ubuntu 13.10 on it and have had a few problems pop up. Hopefully someone here can help, or I will find solutions and post here as things get working again.
Wifi - I have a Thinkpad  11b/g/n 2x2 wireless card. I do not believe there are currently Linux drivers provided for this card. According to thinkwiki, the 1x2 version of the card works with real tek's rtl8192se driver; I have tried to load it with modprobe, but it does not work for this card. There might be a solution to this with ndiswrapper, but I haven't been successful. I have ordered an intel wireless card to replace this one.

TrackPoint - The trackpoint pointer works fine, but lenovo did away with the physical left/middle/right click buttons. • X1 Carbon Touch Fingerprint reader 'cannot find fingerprint sensor device' e7210005

    Hi all,
I've spent far too long trying to solve this by myself, and need to reach out to someone who might have resolved this issue. I've read tons of similar questions online, and rebooted dozens of times after trying many different things.
I have a Carbon Touch 3444-CUU that can't see it's fingerprint reader. It used to work when brand new, but after lots of lenovo and windows updates, it now does not:
I am on Windows 8.1, with all updates.
    No problems in device manager.
Touchchip Fingerprint Coprocessor (WBF advanced mode) installed under Biometric devices fine.
Power management set to _not_ turn off device to save power.
    The bios is 2.61.
I suspect the problem is very low-level, because even the BIOS cannot find device when trying to set it up.
If I have the lates BIOS, but it can't see the device - what can I do?
    Thanks everyone..

BleachedWhale......which settings you have changed in the BIOS......
It is possible to work-around the issue, but some manual steps are needed:
    1. delete "smihlp.sys" from "c:\program files\thinkvantage fingerprint software"
    2. run "services.msc" and stop the service "Windows Biometric Service"
    3. delete the file "031D23AD-15AF-4e25-B7B3-DE34893097ED.DAT" from "c:\Windows\system32\WinBioDatabase"
    4. reboot the computer (important!!)
    5. now try to enroll some fingers
This should make it possible to enroll fingerprint and use it to log into Windows, until the bug can be fixed in some future version of BIOS and/or Fingerprint software.
    Best regards from Germany....

  • Fingerprint reader not working in IE and saying failed to connect to sensor

    Hi all,
I bought a Qosmio x500 10t a couple of months back. For the first couple of weeks i had no probs using the fingerprint reader to log in to windows and to log in to websites in Internet exploer.
All of a sudden it would not work on any website stored. The green banner showed accross the top of site and asked to swipe finger but nothing happened when I swiped. I rebooted and it worked again but not for long before failing. This time a reboot didnt work so i deleted my finger prints and websites and started from scratch. That worked for a couple of attempts before probs started again. And on trying to get into Fingerprint utility it says failure to connect to sensor. So, I did a system restore. It worked for a couple of times again and then same probs. So I found the updated utility software, uninstalled the old and put on the new. Same again, worked for a couple of times then failed.
I could not find anything stuck in the registry but to be on the safe side i did a full system clean back to factory setup using backup discs. Hey presto i thought it had worked. Everything going ok for first 24hrs and then same problems start to occur. Only this time it is also prompting me to enroll fingerprints even though i already have. And when i try to get into the utilioty it says failed to read sensor again.
The fingerprint log on to windows always works as long as i dont close the fingerprint utility down before shutting down. If i do exit the utilty i cant reopen it as it just says failed to connect to sensor. And then i have to unistall and reinstall the utility software. Aty the moment it occasionally works on websites stored but most of the time it doesnt do anything.
Please help. Do I need to send laptop back to Toshiba??

    Hi,
*I got a solution* for the problem that the fingerprint sensor "suddenly" does not work any more.
When starting the Toshiba Fingerprint Utility, it says "failed to connect to fingerprint sensor".
Is it possible that just before it stopped working there was a new firewall installed, or firewall settings had been changed?
*In my case, the problem was solved by changing my firewall settings* (Windows 7 Firewall Control) to ALLOW all traffic for
the Authentec Fingerprint Sensor Service (AFSS). It is the file "AtService.exe" in C:\Program files
    The reason is simple:
The Toshiba Fingerprint utility communicates with the fingerprint sensor service via TCP/IP.
Therefore, any firewall that blocks traffic on the local computer will block the communication.
*After changing my firewall settings, fingerprint sensor works* on my R700 flawlessly now.

  • What can be done with the fingerprint reader?

I am trying to figure out simply what I can do with the fingerprint reader on the T400. I understand how to use it to log into the computer. My main question is whether or not I can use the fingerprint reader in the following contexts, and if so how.
1a) To  log into internet password protected websites. When I use IE, the password manager pops up and prompts me to save a password. If I save it, I can return to that website and it automatically will enter the login information and password for me. I want to know whether you can have password manager (or another program) prompt the user for the fingerprint and then submit the login information. That way the information is protected each time I log in, but I do not need to enter log in information each time, only a fingerprint.
1b) If this is possible in IE8, I would like to know if it is possible in Firefox 3, in which password manager does not pop up.
    2) Can it be used to log into MS Outlook.
    3) Can it be used to lock documents in MS Word.
I much appreciate any information letting me know if these can be done, and if so, how to do them. Thank you very much for your help!

After playing with it for a while I figured out at least questions 1a) and 1b). For anyone else who has the same questions:
1a) Have your browser save the password using Lenovo's Password Manager. Then open password manager and open that item.  Click the advanced tab and change the security level to custom. Click "Customize Security Policy" and select "Protect with a Fingerprint."
1b) Lenovo has a patch to synch Password Manager with firefox 3. It can be found here and is much easier than the manual fixes found on this forum.

I am still looking for help with 3) and 4), particurally 3). Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thank you very much!!

  • My fingerprint reader is not recognized by DigitalPersona when I upgraded to Windows 7

My fingerprint reader worked with Vista but when I upgraded to Windows 7 it is not recognized by DigitalPersona.
I have a dv3-1075us with the AMD Turion X2 dual core mobile RM-72 2.10 Ghz processor.  I have updated the BIOS to F.15, there is not a biometrics option in the BIOS for me to turn on, Authentec Driver 20.0.18 dated 11-24-2009 (Device Manger does nto show an error), and running Digital Persona Personal version 4.11.3826.
I have updated this from the troubleshooting section of the HP Support website.
At the windows login I get a "Reader not detected" message and in DigitalPersona "The fingerprint reader is not connected.  Connect the reader."
What further steps can I do to get my fingerprint reader working?
    Thank you for your help.

I've got an HDX9350 that I originally ran on Vista, and later upgraded to 32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate. I managed to make most functionality run on that installation, albeit buggy and slow, running assorted drivers in compatibility mode.
Earlier this week I installed the 64-bit version od Windows 7 Ultimate, because the upgraded installation did run into problems sometimes, requiring a long time to get an ip address etc. I was surprised to see a lot of drivers being automatically installed, includingdrivers for the AuthenTec 2501A fingerprint sensor.
I stumbled upon AuthenTecs own basic software, allowing You to log onto the computer and that worked. Or was it Window' own? Never mind.
Installing Digital persona resulted in no reader detected all of the time, despite following instructions on this forum.
Installing HP's SimplePass, things worked straight away! Maybe Digital Persona isn't compatible with Windows 7, or with my HDX9350?

  • Re: Tecra Z40, Win 8.1 - Fingerprint reader malfunction

    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
My Tecra Z40 arrived with Win 8.1.
From the start I could not use the Fingerprint Utility.
When accessing the utility nothing would happen for a moment and then the error: 'Could not connect to the fingerprint reader' eventually popped up.
I could also not use the built in Win 8.1 fingerprint enrolment (Error: This device has not suitable biometric device).(PS mind that this built in feature is now metro-embedded and no biometric device settings are now present in the control panel in Win 8.1!)
The problem persisted despite the latest Fingerprint Utility (that comes with the drivers) were installed for Win 8.1. 64 bit directly from TOSHIBA website and despite that a biometric device was always present in the Task Manager ('this device works properly')!
    SOLUTION:
After literally weeks of searching (including getting help from the shop and from Toshiba service) I could finally solve the issue.
I uninstalled the driver and the fingerprint reader from the device manager (only then are the fingerprint reader drivers really removed).
Then I cleaned the registry (I used CC cleaner software) (otherwise installing again was failing for some reason).
Finally I installed an equivalent Fingerprint Utility and the driver for Tecra Z50 (fp-sw-20140605164020.zip) (which I expected to be use the exact same sensor)...and since, everything works fine.
I can now access the Fingerprint Utility and use the fingerprint log on in Windows.
    SUGGESTION FOR CORRECTIVE ACTION:
It seems that the driver offered on Toshiba support website (I believe for me it was the Polish one) for my exact machine (established by TOSHIBA-detector.exe) is incorrect.
To make things worse the driver does not communicate any useful information about its miss-fit in the task manager! If I had to recalculate into money the time I and a bunch of support people had spent on it, it really does make sense to improve that drivers list!
(PS: one of the regpatch files in the same online directory has a virus (yes A VIRUS) recognized in it by Antivir! Toshiba- you may wish to contact somebody responsible for that Polish support site!)
    REMAINING ISSUES:
No fingerprint log in is possible in either Internet Explorer nor Mozilla despite appropriate plugins were installed along with the Fingerprint Utility where the web password option was enabled. (no suggestion appears to appear to attach the fingerprint service to the sites requiring passwords- maybe your service gets blocked by popup blocking protection of browsers?).
I was actually much looking forward to this feature.
Please ensure that the plugins work correctly with the latest browsers.
