Finicky fonts -- using Font Book in system 10.4.4

About one year ago (system 10.2.x) i decided to make the switch from third-party font management software (i.e., Suitcase, etc.) to FONT BOOK. I really liked how simple it was, and that it was probably going to be more stable, since it was designed right into the system software. It worked "OK", but seemed to be overwhelmed at anything over about 250 fonts... even if some of them were "inactive". Now i've upgraded to a Dula 2.7 with 10.4.4 thinking the the second generation of Font Book would be that much better. I was hoping i could import 500+ fonts, having maybe 200+ open at any given time.
I'm having a few curious problems right from the get-go.
2 or 3 fonts will not open in the Main Library no matter what i do. BUT, if i create a second Library I can import them just fine. What gives here is beyond me. But it makes me nervous that something is going on that will saboutoge my fonts in the future. I even tried deleting the offending fonts and re-importing the originals... no dice.
I'm just a bit nervous that there's something going on here that could bite me later... anyone have any advice???
THANX!

Why would you say I should not use RAID 1 to mirror my HDD?
As I see it, having the 2 disks split into 2 different kind of RAIDs is one problem, it's benefit is speed, but RAID1 one cuts that in half, then using the 2 second halves of each drive for PS shop is going to have both disks going crazy back & forth between the 1st half of 2 HDs to the second half of the HDs, therby reducing the speed and longevity of the HDs even more, add the difficulty of repairing RAIDs, the frequent total data loss, and well...
1. Make an instantaneous mirror of my HDD in case of disk failure?
Yes RAID1 is the only "instantaneous" method, but I've found many other more satisfactory/safer methods...
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
SuperDuper...
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
Or the most expensive one & my favorite, Tri-Backup...
http://www.tri-edre.com/english/tribackup.html
And once you have a complete clone/backup, then Incremental Backups of any new or changed files is fairly rapid, and with the one I use, (TB), can be set to do it automatically in the background how ever often, or at a specified time you choose.
I have large files for the work I do some in the vicinity of 1GB and to lose those files would set me back days in my work and if I do not have a mirror of my HDD I could also lose hours and hours of work.
Definitely, you need backups, not try ing to talk you out of it, just into a safer more reliable way... longest I've had a RAID setup last before implosion was 6 months btw.
I understood from all my research of discussion groups and forums that RAID is the system to use.
Might ask yourself why the need for RAID 5-10 if RAID 0-1 were so good!?

  • Font Validation (System Profiler versus Font Book)

    Hello, everyone!
Just a little problem. Font Book tells me that some of my fonts are invalid and shouldn't be used (some of them came with the OS). I used System Profiler to countercheck, and it turns out that none of them are invalid. I'm inclined to believe System Profiler since Font Book is known to have some "quirks".
So, my question is, should I leave the fonts as they are and trust System Profiler or should I trust Font Book and delete the supposed invalid fonts?
    Many Thanks.

    Hi, hihlordjp.
That's an interesting question as there is no documentation as to what System Profiler means when it states a font is "valid." I suspect this is quite different from what Font Book's Validation function checks.
Some of the font characteristics examined by Font Book are documented on page 3 of the PDF Fonts in Mac OS X, specifically:• Glyph Location Table
    • Horizontal Metrics Table
    • PostScript Compatibility Table
    • Character Code Mapping Table Directory
    • Intercharacter Spacing Table
    • Font Name TableI suspect System Profiler considers a font "valid" if the key data elements in the font file match corresponding attributes specified in the latest Receipt referencing that font in the /Library/Receipts directory. It may also be something as simple as it is one of the font types compatible with Mac OS X. For example, bitmap fonts are incompatible with Mac OS X. These are simply educated guesses, again based on the absence of documentation. However, I don't believe it's running the same "tests" as Font Book.
System Profiler only lists fonts installed in the Mac OS X default font locations, whereas Font Book's Validate Font function can be used to check fonts installed anywhere on your Mac, such as in application-specific font folders.
Since you're getting different results from each, I'd personally trust Font Book. You can always try using the fonts to see if problems occur. Font Book tells you if the issue is a Warning or an Error. While you want to see neither, an Error indicates a more severe problem with the font than a Warning.
You could also get a "second opinion" by trying a third-party font verification and repair utility, such as Font Doctor X.
    Good luck!

  • How do I use the Japanese fonts in Font Book in a Pages document?

How does one use the Japanese fonts in Font Book in a Pages document. Pages has its own fonts but I cannot get the Japanese fonts into it.

To type japanese on a computer you change the keyboard, not the font.  Go to system prefs/keyboard/input sources and add Japanese/Kotoeri to the list, then select Hiragana in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen, then type.  The font will take care of itself.

  • I am having trouble getting access to fonts on hard drive. In particular Helvetica Neue Black.  It seems that since HelveNeu.dfont is a system font Font Book  does not give me the option to activate HelveticaNeuBlack.

We recently started using Font Book instead of Suitcase Fusion for our font management program.  We are unable to activate our postscript type 1 font (Helvetica Neue Black)  It seems since hel neu is a system dfont that Font Book thinks we already have it activated but HelvNeueBlack is not part of dfont.  So even though I have it in my fonts folder the font is grayed out and am unable to activate.  I might add that HelveBlack is also a problem.  I've read the article by Kurt Lang on Font Management.  I followed his directions on how to remove dfonts from system but caused more problems than it solved.  I would appreciate a certified way to handle these particular fonts.  Do I need to purchase the Open Type fonts to solve problem.

What I did to fix was remove Helv Fractions that cleared up the problem.
It's been quite a while since I've seen that one come up. When you mentioned that some of the type looked like jumbled fractions, that should have jogged my memory. Yes, Helvetica Fractions is long known to be a bad font. Delete it from the hard drive and never reinstall it.
The HelvNeuBlack and HelvBlack fonts you sent are indeed creating conflicts. Here are screen shots of their internal names. HelvBlack first, and HelvNeuBlack second.
In Helvetica Black, the menu name is just Helvetica, which leaves nowhere for the regular Helvetica font to display in your font lists. It also then creates a cross reference between the two fonts. It is also reporting two other different names to the OS for the same font. Helvetica Black, and Helvetica-Black. You can technically get away with doing that, but it's bad practice.
Helvetica Neue Black is the same type of bad naming. The menu name is just Helvetica Neue, which leaves nowhere for the real Helvetica Neue to go in your menu lists. Then they rather oddly threw in Helvetica 95 Black for the full name, as opposed to HelveticaNeue-Black for the other two spots.
Just some really sloppy work here by someone for what I would guess were Type 1 PostScript fonts converted to Mac legacy TrueType. If you don't have the software to fix the names, the only good suggestion is to throw these fonts out and purchase new ones from a vendor who builds fonts correctly. And while they're kind of pricey, that means either Adobe or Linotype.

  • How do I get fonts in my font book to a place where I can use them?

I have some Hebrew fonts in my font book but I don't know how to make them useable. I don't even know how to ask 'help' how to get them out. Meanwhile the Japanese fonts and the Chinese fonts are readily available.

I have a similar problem except I can't use any other fonts other than roman characters- all I want is to type in simplified chinese.
As with any other language, and just explained above for Hebrew, you go to system prefs/international/input menu and check the box for the simplified chinese input method you want to use, plus the box for Show Input Menu in Finder. Then in the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder you select Chinese and type.

  • How to use a font in font book

    Hi,
i have a font sitting in my 'font book' called 'arial hebrew bold'.How do i get to use this font either in word or illustrator? I am wanting to send hebrew letters to a printer/cutter to produce some hebrew letters for me. The font shows up in font book but does not show up in the font list of word or illustrator??
    nibbs

MS Word for Mac does not support correct Hebrew and for Adobe apps you should use the special ME version.  The best OS X apps for Hebrew are Mellel, TextEdit, Nisus Writer, and Open/Libre/NeoOffice.
If you want to type Hebrew, you first have to go to system prefs/language & text/input sources and check the box for Hebrew, plus the box for Show Input Menu in Menu Bar and the box for Keyboard Viewer.  Then you select Hebrew in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen and type away.  Select Keyboard Viewer to see which key does what.  You cannot really use Arial Hebrew until you do that (unless you want to input via the Character Viewer).

  • What is font book used for? I read the description but still unsure. Does it contain fonts that are not already on the computer

What can I use font book for? I read the description but still don't get it. Does it contain fonts that are not already installed on my new Mac? Thanks.

Disabling (turning off) a font will make it unavailable for use in any font menu. You can alwasy enable the font(s) again - they're not gone permanantly. DON'T disable System fonts, though -> that's just asking for trouble.

  • System fonts not showing in Font Book

I am using Font Agent Pro as a font manager and am wondering if there's a conflict with it and Apple's Font Book. I cannot get the system fonts to show up in Font Book and, hence, those (System) fonts don't show in Apple apps, e.g., Safari, Grapher, Text Edit, etc., etc.
The only way I can get the system fonts to show in apple apps it to drag the System>Library>Fonts folder to the "Collection" column onto the "Computer" collection. This is fine, but it copies the System fonts to the ComputerName>Library>Fonts folder.
I've tried for hours to get the System fonts to show in Font Book and do it without the System fonts being copied to the Library or User folder, i.e., I want the System fonts to stay in the System fonts folder only.
If I boot into another partition and bring up Font Book everything works as I would expect, and Font Agent Pro is not installed on that partition...
    Any Ideas?
    TIA,
    Geoff

    Hi PS1,
I am using Font Agent Pro as a font manager and am wondering if there's a conflict with it and Apple's Font Book.
Yes, in a sense. If you always open and close your fonts through FAP's interface, then it's no problem leaving Font Book on your Mac. It will simply sit there and take up a small amount of disk space.
That said, it's still a nuisance having more than one font manager on your computer at a time. Say you disable all of the fonts in Font Book that you can. Assuming the fonts are still in the /Library/Fonts/ folder, you then turn them on and off with FAP. The problem then is which orders are the applications going to believe? Are the fonts active, according to FAP? Or inactive, according to Font Book?
Also, if you double click on any font to quick activate it, both FAP and Font Book will activate the font. So you will find yourself confused fairly often when you deactivate the font in FAP, but they still keep showing up in your applications as active. That would be because Font Book is still holding it open.
So if FAP is going to be your main font manager, then copy Font Book off to another disk for safe keeping (so you don't have to use Pacifist or an OS install to get it back on your system if you need, or want to), and then remove it from your hard drive.
Definitely don't remove the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder! If you remove Lucida Grande from its default location in any way, you will lose control of your desktop. The only way I can think that Taavi managed to accomplish this was moving files around booted to an external drive, or from another Mac via FireWire Target Mode. It's impossible to do on the same drive your booted to. You'll lose control of the desktop every time if you remove Lucida Grande. Although Taavi may have made his/her copy to the /Library/Fonts/ folder. That at least would still leave an active copy of Lucida Grande somewhere, but I highly recommend against that sort of handling of the system fonts.

  • Is it possible to use the fonts I have in my Mac Font Book with Creative Cloud software, such as Illustrator and Photoshop?

Is it possible to use the fonts I have in my Mac Font Book with Creative Cloud software, such as Illustrator and Photoshop?

    Hi Kyley,
Syncing fonts from CC is a feature of Typekit. However, fonts that you've installed manually on your system will be available in all your apps. You won't need to sync them.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.
    Cheers,

  • Type Lovers, is Font Book now fit for use?

When I installed 10.3 I was told Font Book wasn't a program written for graphic designers who use lots of fonts and keep them open often. So, I listened to the advice from some of the type gurus on these forums, got rid of lots of the fonts apple includes but I didn't need, etc., I bought Font Reserve and that has worked fine so far.
When I upgrade to Leopard, do I need to figure font management software into my budget ?
Any graphic designers out there with experience?...I mean I don't need thousands of fonts open at a time...but I do like to keep a healthy variety open and active...and what about programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign working with Font Book...do they play nice together?
    Thanks
    M

    Hi
Whomever told you this was talking nonsense. How well Font management applications perform depend to a large degree on the quality of the fonts you have. 1st and 2nd generation copies of your font library should work well with any font management application you may want to use, which includes Font Book. Certain applications can cope better with larger and more complex font lists than others. How much resources in terms of RAM, CPU/Bus Speeds as well as hard drive are all factors that need to be taken into account. For example I've successfully installed (using Font Book) nearly 1,800 fonts, however it took Quark about 30-40 minutes to load with all that information. On the other hand I've installed between 30-40 fonts (Using Suitcase this time) and it crashed Quark on launch. That's because one of the 30-40 fonts was damaged/corrupted.
Of all the font management systems that I have used the best one by far is Linotype FontExplorer X (as already mentioned)
    http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX
The best thing about it apart from it being FREE is its ability to clear out system and application font caches, something other font management systems don't do.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • Shared network font library - using Font Book

I'm a trying to set up a "font server" on my company's OS X Server. I have created a folder within the SHARED ITEMS folder called Library, and placed all the fonts within a FONTS folder. I can now mount the folder on a clients/artists desktop just fine, so the shared point is working.
The problem is, I don't want to have to mount another "drive" to the artists desktop. I want the artists to use Font Book with a "Network" globe to which they can use the fonts.
I've been trying to figure out how to do this....and I think it may have somthing to do with the /Network/Library....it's an alias that seems to be broken. Shouldn't the "Library" alias be a folder???
Here is the Library alias info:
    Kind: Alias
    Size: 1kb on disk
    Where: /Network
    Server: nfs://automount%20-nsl%20%5B142]
    Original: /automount/Library
It's interesting that it says "nfs://" because I've got it set up as "AFP" on the server.
    Any suggestions?

If you use Workgroup Manager and your clients are bound to the server via LDAP - try this, it works for us.
On your server, put a folder called "Library" wherever you wish (outside of System and Library for the Server itself and not inside another shared item). Put a folder called "Fonts" in the new "Library" folder
    Open WGM
    Go to Sharing
    Select "All"
Find and Select your "Library" folder
Under General select "share item and contents"
Under Access set permissions - ours are Root rw, Admin rw, Everyone read only. Propogate permissions to the contained folders.
Under Protocols disable any protocols you don't plan to use. With AFP make sure it is called "Library" and that guest access is possible. We have all other protocols disabled.
Under Network Mount select "enable network mounting," choose AFP as protocol and make sure that the mount is Used for "shared library"
If your clients are bound to the server via LDAP, reboot them and the client machines will connect to the server and use your new shared "Library" there as an option after the "Library" folders in the client machine itself. The new library will not need to be mounted on the users desktop as it will already be mounted by the client itself. The fonts will show up in Font Book under Network.
Put your fonts in the "Fonts" folder in the new "Library" folder on the server and all clients should now be able to access them. You can put other Library items in the network accessable folder just like the fonts and have them accessable to all bound clients.
    hope this helps

  • Has anyone else had problems activating 'free' Open Type fonts using Font Book/Mavericks?

Lately I'm having trouble getting free fonts to activate in Font Book. Running 10.9.2. Anyone else experiencing the same issues?

    I’d suggest uninstalling:
    Blackberry software
    the cycling74 driver
Any HP “utilities” (regarding the HP IO. Apple told developers to stop using Startup Items back in 10.3.)
any Adobe software you have (the “not loaded” ones are not loading because they’re incompatible.
    the com.apple.CSConfig one.
    facebook
    google keystone agent
Unfortunately you have a lot of very questionable old, incompatible, and probably bad software on your Mac that is not playing well with Mavericks.  Some of these can be difficult to uninstall, particularly if you are not familiar with poking around in Mac system folders.
You might consider cutting to the chase and doing a clean install:
backup your documents and passwords, network settings, etc.
    Completely erase your hard drive
Reinstall mavericks and your apps from scratch (not from backups)
    and finally replacing your documents.
It can be a good thing. Spring cleaning. If you want to go this route, let me know, I can give you some more detailed suggestions for how to do it. The advantage is you can get Mavericks running really fast and reliably, and then be more selective about what you reinstall. A lot of the stuff you have on there is probably from apps you don't even use anymore (like for your Blackberry), or that really aren't necessary.

  • How do I use the fonts in my font book in Word?

I have created several documents and used fonts that I like, such as Sand, Verdana, and Textile. I imported them into my font book, but they are not available in my Word or Excel documents. Anyone have any ideas on how I can use them?

    Nancy,
I'm afraid I don't know the answer, if no one on this forum answers I'd also recommend posting on the Office for Mac Product Forums. BTW when posting it's helpful to post what version of MS Word you're referring to. Snow Leopard will run Word 2004, 2008 & 2011 so you need to be a bit more specific.
