Finished book quality

ordered and uploaded a new book (extra large) and received the finished product only 6 business days after ordering (that was with regular ground shipping) - the quality was more than satisfactory - the quality actually surpassed books I have done through iphoto
-in general it's good to know that even with a high speed connection it took almost half an hour for the book to format and upload - granted it was 64 pages and almost all of the pictures were tiff - some running as large as 25-30- MB
- in rersponse to other questions - the picture printed on the dust cover is also printed right on the front cover of the book itself and is of high quality color and sharpness
- can also say that procrastinating placing the order allowed me to regularly view ideas/tips from this forum and the final product benefitted - thanks to all contributors - keep posting

Except for full page photos I've had very good results with photos that were 1800 x 1200 pixels in size. That was with my first digital camera. Always set your camera to take the largest size photo possible at the highest quality level. You should not have to worry about resolution levels unless it's for a full page layout or you've cropped the photo considerably. Here's a slideshow of my last book: iPhoto Book PDF .
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Exporting iphoto book quality

What is the quality of the photos exported to PDF from iphoto? I'm having a professional lab print up my photo book but I would like to select them from iphoto and give them a general idea of layout using the photo book in iphoto. However, I'm concerned about giving them the highest quality photos. It would be much easier to select the photos in iphoto book and burn to disc than finding and exporting.

    scubanut:
Are you going to provide the layout to the printer in the form of a pdf of the book?
From what I've gathered iPhoto uses 300 dpi for it's books. If you look at the iPhoto preference file with Pref Setter and search for dpi you can see the settings for the various sizes of books.

  • Importing a finished book from iphoto to apeture

Can you import a finished book from the iphoto library to apeture?

As iPhoto has some funny pages layout (but with less control), I use iPhoto to do some pages for my Aperture books. Print the page to PDF then use Photoshop to convert the appropriate page to JPG then import to your Aperture book.
You can use the same steps with pages designed in any other apps (Pages, ...)

  • Very disappointed with photo book quality

I created and ordered a photo book using Aperture and am extremely disappointed with the quality. The opening page has a spot of red ink on it with vertical red banding through the center of the image. Many other pages also have the banding.
Most of the images are also very grainy. I know the source images are not at fault, they are very smooth and look nice on my monitor and when I print them. In fact I ordered a few prints through Aperture and they came out really nice. The grain pattern is the same for both full page prints and those that are sized down to about 2x3.
On top of that, the paper quality seems worse than previous books I have created using iPhoto. I was always happy with those books, and I assumed Aperture would be the same if not better.
The books I created with iPhoto were with jpeg images from the same camera, a rebel xt. The only difference this time was most of the images were shot as raw. There was also a small handful jpegs shot with a point and shoot and these have the same grainy pattern as the the raw images.
I sent an email to Apple support, but are others still having book quality issues with the latest version of Aperture 2? This is unacceptable, especially for the amount that is charged. Would it have been better if I exported the images as jpegs, imported them into iPhoto and created the book there?

    Hi guys,
I got a real trouble with aperture book printing.
The cover is Ugly it looks like it's scratched over some miles. It's Mate. And it looks printed with a poor inkjet printer.
Inside the book the photos looks almost correct but in the skies we can see some vertical line. I'm fully unsatisfied I got better result with iphoto books !
Please Apple do something. I ordered this book from France. Ans I saw on different forums that they can get better quality than this outside France.
    The paper looks very light.
I'm considering ordering books from blurb. And I feel sorry cause aperture tool to create a book is awsome.
Did any french photograph experienced this ?
    Regards every one.
    Bye.
PS : I printed the pdf and checked at 100% the photos looks great.

  • Very Pleased With Book Quality

Just received 17 copies of a 32 page hardback book (modern lines theme) of digital photographs my students at German Swiss International School in Hong Kong put together a couple of weeks ago. Used Aperture 2.1.2 and had been just a little concerned about what the quality might be like after reading a few posts in this forum...but I'm really very pleased with them all! The books look exactly as I had wanted and I'm sure the students will be delighted.
Will definitely be using this service again and will be encouraging staff and students at the school to do the same.

I happen to chime in and notice that there are some discussion related to Blurb BookSmart and Blurb book.
Here is my advice... be cautious. To produce a better book outcome, be SURE that you have calibrated your monitor. Or the output looks misery.
Also, be sure to download the ICC print profile for Blurb's outsourced printers that use HP Indigo printer and be sure to soft proof the images in Photoshop. I know it sounds like lot of work involved, but the dividend pay off nicely... along with time, effort, patience.
For those who prefer to use Adobe InDesign and Photoshop to do custom full-bleed design, it can be done with Blurb. The catch is that you need to use Blurb Booksmart app to import all of finished full-bleed layout design you created in InDesign and Photoshop (or even Illustrator).
There are lot of pretty nice helpful information and pointers with frame of references all over at Blurb Forums as well.
    Hope that helps.

  • Iphoto hangs (20 hours) when upgrading from 6 to 11 when writing new library data (Lion 10.7.4) - Can't rebuild because I need to print a finished book - can anyone help?

I startet by having iphoto 6, and the library update did not finish up.
Tried to uninstall iphoto 6 and then install '11 again.
I have back up my library on external.
I have tried to download the tool for preparing an old iphoto library, to see if that helped but no. It is also for version 5 and earlier.
When I try to open 11, it says it needs to upgrade library - I click upgrade - it checks the old library files, creates the new, and I can now see my old album names and so on, but then it hangs (I tried to let it hang for 20 hours now, because it does not say that the program don't answer, it is as if it is still working.
I believe I have around 6-7.000 pictures, but cleaned it recently, emptied the trash (and has also emptied the general trash and downloaded the latest version of Lion, 10.7.4 - even if I had it anyways)
I just bought '11 because I had trouble printing a book I just finished for my weeding in 2 weeks, so I am really keen on getting my library back in full style asap, even if I have to get an older version of iphoto..

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If you can create and run a new library then your current library is the culprit.
In that case make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Checking book quality before ordering

Does anyone know how to verify that the PDF file transmitted when ordering a book accurately represents what you see when designing a book?
Why I want a preview of the PDF...
My order this year consisted of 3 large books and 3 extra-large books. Both were identical projects in iPhoto with the only difference being the size of the book. The large books arrived looking great and the extra-large books had 21 out of 30 pages that looked terrible. These were not issues related to the image resolution. I'm familiar with the little warning icon when images are too low of a resolution.
Customer service offered my wife a partial refund because they said that the PDF's on their end looked horrible as well and therefore we were somehow to blame. They suggested not using WiFi and closing all other applications before ordering.
I was livid because this is our 10th year in ordering books and we've never had this problem. I called to complain since our iMac isn't using WiFi and there's no way to check the quality before ordering. I can accept that the printing company isn't to blame due to the rule of garbage-in-garbage-out but I can't see what I could have done differently to avoid this.
I was given a full refund and advised to place the order again. I should then wait 30 minutes and then call with the order number and ask them to preview the PDF for me to make sure it looks ok. I'm sure this will catch any glaring problems but it doesn't seem very efficient. Seems like there should be an online preview capability.

  • Aperture book quality - worse than before?

    Hello everyone,
My photo studio has been using Aperture for 8 months now and we are very happy with it. We love the organization, web output, etc. We also LOVE the book design layouts, but the quality of the book printing has been degrading over that past few months.
The first books we printed with Apple (around Nov/Dec 2006) were great, then about 3 months ago, we noticed the labels on the hardcover books went down in qulaity (almost like they were just using a color laser printer), and today we received five books in the mail and the quality is terrible. Also, two of the books have the "Made on a Mac" page in the back (like iPhoto).
It seemed to me (since I have had books printed by both Aperture & iPhoto) that the older Aperture books were of higher quality than the iPhoto books. Now, it seems as though they are one-in-the-same and our studio cannot have this lower quality book - it is not up to our standards.
I would gladly use another manufacturer, but every other design software out there for each respective company is terrible and takes three times as long for us to design a single book. I LOVE the integration of the books in Aperture and it makes our timeline two weeks shorter with our clients and that is what sets us apart from other studios in this town.
Has anyone else had these problems or noticed the change/degridation in the quality of the books?
    Thanks!

    C'mon Apple,
There is no way you don't know that the quality of your "sticker" covers is horrible. Maybe when you first launched your book service, but it has now been years. I just received three books, and all three have tacky, peeling front stickers.
Please give us an alternative, even if it costs more, that allows us to show our work with pride. After spending thousands and thousands on computers, software, cameras, lenses, etc., the cover of the books drags that first impression into the ground.
    Thanks!

  • IPhoto Book Quality

I am interested in hearing about other peoples experiances with the print quality of thier iPhoto 6 books.
I have ordered two iPhoto books, the first about a year and half ago with iPhoto v5 came out spectacularly. The most recent I just received today ordered via iPhot v6. I am not to happy with. It has the following problems...
    1. Washed out colors. Several of the photos have distinctly muddled colors. This washed out effect is not consistant and varies from photo to photo.
    2. Blurry photos. The printing process has severely blurred some photos as if the print heads of the printer where misaligned.
    3. Banding. Several of the photos indicate print banding such that occurs on low end inkjets.
    4. Print artifacts. Several pages contain marks and blemishes in the white borders and margins.
I have emailed support asking to retun the book but beyond that does anyone have ideas of things I could do to get a better quality print out? Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I've had very good luck with book but others have experienced what you have to some extent or another. It's probable that your book is a on time error and you should contact Apple and ask for a refund - http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto/customerservice/orderbooks/. Apple has been very good at correcting such problems.

  • Abysmal photo book quality

Just before Christmas I ordered two iPhoto books. In one of the books, the pages just come out of the binding. In both of them the photos look literally HORRIBLE: Faces are green, blue skies are light purple.
Apple refunded my money, but what I want is good-looking books. At MacWorld they had an area where they were showing off Aperture and had demo books. Needless to say, those looked much better than what I got with iPhoto. I asked the guy whether books printed from Aperture will be delivered in higher quality, but he could not give me a direct answer. I suspect they may. Imagine professional photographers receiving the kind of books I got: They would immediately look elsewhere.
Running Aperture is not an option as my home Mac is a G4 mini, so I am looking for alternatives. I looked to Shutterfly, but there does not seem an option to upload a PDF book. SharedInk seems expensive. Blurb requires their own software.
    Any suggestion?

    Davide:
That color mode are the photos? If they are CMYK then that may be the reason you're getting incorrect color. Apple's vendors use the sRGB color profile for their printing. If you're using a 3rd party editor like Photoshop Elements or Photoshop you need to have it do the color management and embed the color profile.
Contact iPhoto at http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto/customerservice/orderbooks/. They usually very responsive in correcting bad books.

  • Photo Book Quality Questions

I'm currently working on an XL Photo Book using iPhoto 11.
I know iPhoto says I can create a max of 100 pages. I wonder, is this 50 pages double sided or actually 100 pages double sided?
Secondly, I read some older threads about image quality and OT recomending to bump up the DPI to 300 or 400. He mentiond Pref Setter and included links, however, the links no longer work. Where /how can I do this? In addition, am I too late in bumping up the DPI, or can I just continue to create my book and increase the DPI before I actually click "Buy Book"?
    Thanks!

    100 Pages is 50 double-sided.
The material about the DPI is no longer relevant in iPhoto 11.

  • Iphoto vs aperture book quality

I realize that aperture gives much more flexibility, however, is it the same printing service? I use iphoto, but there was a write up on aperture in a photo magazine giving it high marks. How different from a printing service standpoint are the two applications? Anyone know?

    Diana Phillips wrote:
Are books from aperture and iphoto printed using the same quality paper, printers, inks etc????
OR is aperture better. I am not referring to the layout options just print quality.
Sadly, it appears that there is a bug in Aperture 2.1, and images printed from books within Aperture, whether by Apple or on your own printer, have serious colour management issues. This only affects images printed +from books+ within Aperture.

  • Digital Camera for great iPhoto book quality

I want to start making iPhoto books, calendars, and cards and was looking to buy a new digital camera in order to do this. I was wondering how many megapixels I should get in order to ensure high quality pictures when I have the books printed out.
    Thanks

..... Be happy with your budget. I had a nice Canon that sold for under $300, as I recall. My pictures and videos came out looking wonderful, I feel. (So did others) Unfortunately, it was eventually ruined, by my very hard use under awful weather conditions. I wasn't always careful. It just went off to recycling heaven.
Shooting nature shots, I must say that I did see other people's pictures that were better than mine. Gosh knows how much those big cameras with telephoto lenses and super-fast shooting cost.
Those cameras are almost unfair competition, since these people could simply put the camera on auto, aim at a moving subject and start shooting multiple pics per second. Of course one of them would catch this or that bird in flight with a fish in its mouth, for example. Fantastic Picture! Yet, it was the camera that made the pic, not the photographer, IMHO.
Eventually, I just called them nature paarazzi, and enjoyed myself despite some rude laughter at my real mistakes. Still is fun. Some photographers are just cruel, but that's different story.

  • Why poor audio book quality on ipod?

downloaded audio book sounds fine straight off my computer, but sound quality is "rushed" and some words slurred on the nano.  Any ideas?

    Hi amatyat,
    I had the same problem.
    Select a book
    Play the book
At the screen that shows the book art in the background and the play/pause symbol
in the middle with the reverse/forward symbols on the left and the right, advance one
screen beyond this to the screen that allows you to slide forward or backward in the
book. Look to the middle of the screen, on the right. There's a tiny symbol that says
either 1x, 2x or 3x. Tap this symbol until it reads 1x or the voice sounds normal.
