Finishing touches with Samba

Hi, how do I get it so I can mount with a normal user?  When I try I get:  mount: only root can do that
Also, when I mount as root, it's only read access, how do I enable write access?  The account i'm logging in should have full control.
Finally.. how do I get the samba browser to work in XFCE4.  It sees the network, but then doesn't show any computers?  I assume this is also because my user doesn't have access to mount?
Finally II:  Whats a good way to setup permanant mounts?  I best I can see is to add the lines to fstab but I don't see anywhere to put in a password... as it is now, it'll actually stop the boot process to ask for passwords.
hehe Finally III:  Anyone have any ideas how to go about getting networked printers to work?  I've only ever installed printers connected to the linux computer (which was hard).  Kinda scared to try and get networked printers (and a scanner) working.
Thanks!

Open /etc/fstab and check the line about your Samba-mount. In options you should add "user". Here's a line of my /etc/fstab allowing normal users to mount a disc in my DVD-RW:
/dev/cdroms/cdrom1 /dvdrw iso9660 user,noauto,ro 0 0
nehsa wrote:Also, when I mount as root, it's only read access, how do I enable write access?  The account i'm logging in should have full control.
Check your smb.conf file. I've got Samba-server running with different shares and different access rights per share.
[shared]
allow hosts = 10.0.1.
valid users = @smbuser
comment = Shared read-only files
write list = fubar
read list = *,@smbuser
invalid users = @*
path = /secured/shared
This way, only my user (fubar) has write-rights and the other users have read-only rights. This smb.conf file is used for Samba v2.2.8a on FreeBSD tho.
nehsa wrote:Finally.. how do I get the samba browser to work in XFCE4.  It sees the network, but then doesn't show any computers?  I assume this is also because my user doesn't have access to mount?
I assume you're talking about XFFM, XFCE's filemanager? Editing your /etc/fstab will probably fix this.

Permamounts are done in /etc/fstab. It's possible to pass the username and password for networkshares in there aswell:
//servername/sharename /mountdirectory smbfs username=userename,password=password 0 0

I have never done that before. Installing directly connected printers wasn't too hard tho, I followed Gentoo's guide to printing.

I had just put the finishing touches on my 36 minute documentatary when I got an error message that the external 1TB HD I was using to store the project had been ejected improperly (must have shaken a cord).  The result is that the project would not load in the edit Projects window.  I can see the file in the finder window and it will launch iMovie but the file itself will not load in the projects window.
I have contacted apple support and they tried to do a few things... to no available.
With my limited knowledge of file structures I assume that the header file must be corrupt.
Is there a 3rd party utility that can decompile and fix the file structure so it will load properly.  I've been working on this project since june and would hate to have to redo the whole thing again.

  • Black screen - can not get in touch with my Ipod Nano

I have an Ipod Nano, latest model. After a short time the monitor shuts down and turns black / standby, can ths be disable?
I use my Nano with the Nike Ipod censor when I run, and it is diffical to get in touch with my Ipod Nano, when the screen after a short time have been black.
Should I see my  runningdata or to stop the censor when I'm finishs running, and press the screen nothing happens.
Press I on / off button, so either I get a voice that tells a lot about my run, or push me 2 times on / off button toggles track.
If I press the + or -, I change the volume.
Keeps press on / off button, turn off my Ipod Nano and all my recording of my run is lost ...

    Possible causes:
    1. Your antivirus is blocking access to gs.apple.com.
    2. Your phone is jailbroken.
    3. Your computer has been used at some time in the past to jaibreak some iOS device (not necessarily the phone with the problem), and its network database was corrupted by the hacking software that was used.
    4. Apple's activation servers are down (very rare, and never for more than an hour or so).
For 1. try disabling your antivirus.
For 2. & 3. you need to go somewhere other than an apple forum for help. Although you can try deleting lines containing gs.apple.com from your "hosts" file on your computer.

  • Quest - The Finishing Touch: Framing and Mattes?

Quest - The Finishing Touch: Framing and Mattes?
A  couple of months ago max I acquired PSE 13.
My goal is to make my shots to the point so that they look finished & polished complete with suitable frames or mattes.
I know very little in regards to what the options are and how to get there. This is just for my desktop.
I've seen nice ones online for sale, however at this beginning stage, I'd rather find some at no cost or learn to make them myself.
Especially interested in mattes, how to create and to incorporate them.
What capability does PSE have in this regard?
Any tips, resources, suggestions, thoughts on the matter, pointers, how to proceed or what direction to head is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Funny how every other main page on the apple.com site displays perfectly in iPhone portrait mode
Not funny at all. All the other pages are portrait, with more information going down the page than the home page, making them longer. You do understand the difference between portrait and landscape don't you?
the same meticulous attention to detail was missing.
It's not "attention to detail" - it's simply the difference between a short page and a long page. Geez!

  • Can't sinc my ipod touch with new 3.0 software

I got the new 3.0 software for my ipod touch and now it wont let me sinc my ipod it is saying that there is no SIM card in my iPhone i think that it is mistakeing my iPod touch with a iPhone. Can someone help me

OK, I wound up going to my local Genius Bar, and here's what we did:
    1) reinstalled iTunes ...still didn't sync
    2) repaired disk permissions...same thing
    3) created a new user account on my MacBook and checked to see if my iPod touch would sync then...it did
    4) went back to my user account, re-restored my iPod Touch and deleted the iPod backup file...and then it synced. At this point, it looked like it was a corrupted backup file.
When I got home and hooked it up to let it finish syncing, I realized that none of my photos had been transferred to my iPod touch, so I told it to...and the -50 error came up again. Another round of restoring the iPod and deleting the backup file, then I told it to load my photos from the My Pictures folder, rather than from iPhoto (which was the original setting before all this happened)...and it was fine. So my guess is that something in iPhoto 6 is tripping up the iTunes software (or vice versa) and screwing up the backup/sync process. I'll continue to keep an eye on it and see if that holds.
Thanks to Ariel at the Genius Bar in the Apple Store at the Menlo Park Mall, Edison, NJ! You were a great help, and thanks for your patience!

  • How do i use 2 ipod touches with 1 itunes account?

how do i use 2 ipod touches with 1 itunes account?  can they share apps and music etc. I'm not very good at any tech so advise would be much appreciated.

Yes. You can sync an unlimited number of iDvies that you control to one iTunes library/account. If using the same iTunes library on the same comutr just make sure that yu go to the ap. music and other pane for the iPod in iTunes and select sycn selected items. Not the the whole library.  That way each iPod can have it own contents.

  • [SOLVED] Share Multiple Directories With Samba On Arch Linux and XP

    Hello,
I have had the worst luck so far with Samba, which is far more likely because of an error on my part than on Samba's.
I can only seem to share one directory regardless of how I setup my smb.conf. And worse yet, if I mess with Samba, smb.conf, after the first time I set it up it doesn't work again until I reinstall my OS. Now I'm sure that reinstalling isn't the only option, but I haven't figured out how to make it work again any other way. I've tried uninstalling it, deleting it from the cache, deleting /etc/samba and so on, still can't connect to it from XP when I reinstall it.
I'm running Arch64 and I want to share some directories with a laptop running Windows XP.
I want to share my home folder, but have it accessible from XP only by me, share my mother's home folder, and have it accessible on XP only by her (well actually I guess it needs to be accessible by both, since i'm the admin), share my media-server (a collection of five hard drives where I store movies and such), and have it read/write by both of us. And finally share /srv so I can work on that from the XP computer as well. I think that's all. And I would like to share printers between the two computers. I would also like to access XP files from here.
I've always been able to get the media-server to share, but that's it, nothing else. And it doesn't always work right. It doesn't seem to want to follow sym links, but like I say if I mess with it it will stop working all together. So I'm not sure what to do.
A thought was to instead make a /media/samba-share directory and share that, and inside it have symlinks to my home, media-server, etc. However, that will only work if samba will follow symlinks for me.
Here is the smb.conf I am planning to use at the moment:
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
    # read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
    # Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
    # Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

Now I wouldn't think I would need to list my home and mom's home seperately, but since [homes] has never worked for me in the past i thought i would give it a try. Does this look like something that would do what I am wanting?
Otherwise I would delete [homes], [media-server], [theavataroftime], [christina], and [server] and replace them with just [samba-share] with all those as symlinks inside that directory as before mentioned.
Anyway, thanks for the help. Any good guide on this matter would be appreciated, I have looked at several, but more can't hurt . Networking isn't my thing so to speak, so please be specific in any explanations. Thanks again.

Well it seems that my trouble all started when I began using the 'printable = yes' option for shares. Since I removed that the troubles seem to have left me.
Does anyone know why that is listed as on option in smb.conf here:
    # A publicly accessible directory, but read only, except for people in
    # the "staff" group
    ;[public]
    ; comment = Public Stuff
    ; path = /home/samba
    ; public = yes
    ; writable = yes
    ; printable = no
    ; write list = @staff
As well as in a few other examples if it doesn't work? I seen the example and assumed that option was needed to print from those shared directories.
Also, it seems that the comma is not needed between the 'valid users' names.
Also, I guess it wasn't Windows XP's fault either but rather my own ignorance. I like the idea of blaming Windows better though.....
I hope this servers to help others to aviod my mistakes.

As I've already said to get this far: I have lost a lot of tracks while syncing my iPod Touch with iTunes. I have managed to get free downloads of some of the single tracks, but when I try to download entire albums the system informs me that I have already purchased them and a pop-up window informs me I can get them back from my "Purchased" file. I would not be trying to dowload them again if they were anywhere on the iPod, would I? The other problem seems to be that with single tracks I don't know before I hit the purchase button if I have picked it from the right album and I have had to pay for it again.
I feel that I have been totally ripped off by iTunes and, apart from ranting on this forum, I don't seem to be able to let my feelings known. It's like a guy from my local record store coming round and nicking my albums and telling me that it's tough!
The point here is folks, that it was syncing two Apple sites which caused the loss of these tracks and from what I've read elsewhere this is a regular fault. And please don't tell me that it's my fault for having a pc. Apple shouldn't sell a product for pc, when it doesn't work on pc!

    - Are you saying that they are not listed in your Purchased section?
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - Are they listed in your Puchases history when you log into your account on your computer?
    - Are they still available now for purchase? If not then you are out of luck
If they are still available and listed in your Puchase History then contact iTunes

The BT profiles on the iPod do not support direct iPod-to-iPod use.  There are apps that support peer-to-peer gaming between iPods and maybe transfer like for photos.  Also see:

I am a new iPad user and have transferred my iTunes library from my laptop. How do I sync my iPod touch with my ipad

You don't.  You synch your iPod to your computer.  There's no way to synch from iPad to iPod.  You can tranfer the same playlists to your iPod from the computer.
