Finnicky epson scanner via server

We have an Epson Perfection 3200 scanner connected to our (less than 2 months old) Mac mini server running Snow Leopard Server. We have been using Image Capture on user machines to access the shared scanner via ethernet connection. It works great.. for a while. The problem is that every few days, the scanner stops responding. Image Capture opens, but when you click on the scanner in the list of devices, it just reads "Trying to open scanner session..." and never resolves.
Sometimes restarting the scanner will fix this problem, but not always. We end up having to restart the server and kick everybody off that's using files at the time in order for the scanner to show up again.
We have tried accessing from multiple user machines (Leopard, SL, diff machines, no result)
We have tried restarting user machines
We have power-cycled and restarted the scanner
We have disconnected and reconnected ethernet at user-machines
We are trying to avoid having to restart the server every time this issue occurs, since we have to scan things several times a day. Any ideas? Thanks.

There is nothing wrong. The USB port on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does NOT support scanning.

  • SQL server compatible with Epson Scanner

I have Windows SQL server 2012 RS and can not get my Epson Scanner to connect.  I know that Epson does not have a driver for this OS but wondered if there was some type of work around for me to be able to use my scanner.
    thanks!

    Hello,
I guess you would like Windows to connect to Epson scanner, not SQL Server. If that is the case, this a SQL Server related
forum, and I suggest you to place your question on the following forums. Please provide them the model of your scanner.

For that model, Epson has this information:
    ICA Scanner Driver
    07/17/12
Description: The latest Mac OS X ICA scanner driver for your Epson product is available only via Apple's Software Update. Here's how to get it:
    1. Connect the all-in-one or scanner to your Mac and power it on.
    2. Select the  menu, then Software Update.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the available updates.
Note: Software Updates may find multiple updates for your system. You may choose to install all or some of the updates by clicking on Show Details.
Compatible Systems: Mac OS X (v10.8.x)

  • I upgraded to 10.8.4 and now it won't let me use my Epson scanner, saying "power pc applications are no longer supported." How do I make it work?

I upgraded to 10.8.4 and now I can' use my Epson scanner  I get a message saying, "ou can't open the application Epson Scan apps because Power PC applications are no longer supported." I also can't synch my old Palm Pilot for the same reason.
    How can I fix this?

We need to sort out some facts here first:
    •  You cannot be running Mt. Lion on your iMac G5.  What Mac is it?  What is the Model Identifier listed in About This Mac; More Info; Hardware Overview
    •  What is the model of your Epson Scanner?
    •  Have you attempted to scan using Image Capture, located in your Applications folder?
    •  Your Palm Pilot software will only run in Snow Leopard; so depending upon which Mac you have, you will either have to:
    1)  partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it to "dual-boot" when you want to access you Palm software, or
    2)  install Snow Leopard Server (now available from Apple for $20 telephone orders USA & Canda only) into Parallels 8 to run your Palm software in Mt. Lion:

  • Epson scanner not work with Mountain Lion?

I have an Epson Expressio 1600Pro scanner with transparency adaptor. It has worked perfectly with previous Macs using OSX 10.4. I have recently bought a MacBook pro and upgraded it to OSX 10.8. I went to Epson's website to get a new driver etc. That tells you it can only be downloaded via Mac Software Update. That was duly done and installed. System prefs lists it under printer and scanners. OK
I have also installed Photoshop Elements 11 and expected to be able to scan direct to there but nothing seems possible. Going to Help says use Image capture or Preview. Yes! there is a small very rudimentary scanning window appears in both apps. Now the problem! Nothing happens. I have tried ALL the various meagre settings on offer, changing size, resolution, custom etc and all that happens is a small rectangle of a scan occurs but no resulting file.
I have been on to Epson who say ONLY image capture will work with 10.8 but as it is a 3rd party software they can offer no assistance. Well image capture does NOT work. I have spent all afternoon trying various things like restarting, unplugging, reconnecting etc etc nothing.
10.8 does seem very buggy. I have even had to stop using Mail and Safari simply because it doesn't work whereas Thunderbird and Firefox work very well.
But I digress, does anyone have any thoughts please?

The following comments are based on installing an Epson RX700 All-in-one printer/copier/scanner so they may not be applicable to you but, for what it's worth here they are. The RX700 scanner worked perfectly with Snow Leopard and then Lion but, when I changed to Mountain Lion, and used the app store to download and install the drivers, I lost the Epson scanner utility (ie. the user interface that gives you all the scanner options).
However, if I used System Preferences and then the Print and Scan option, it brought up a small window where I could select either Print or Scan. Selecting Scan or Open Scanner from this window then opens up a window with all the scanner options in it, including an overview scan. This window has the option to either Hide Details (all the detailed scanner options - resolution, size, output file name etc) or Show them. As far as I can see, this window is actually the Image Capture app, although it doesn't say so.
It might be a long shot but try changing the Auto Selection box in this window to one of the other options (eg. "Detect Separate Items") or setting the "Scan to" to a file.

  • Epson Scanne stops during scan

    Hi,
Im on an iMac 2GHz G5 with 1GB RAM running OS X 10.4.8 with an Epson Perfection 2580 Photo scanner attached via USB.
Up to a couple of weeks ago, the scanner was working fine with both Photoshop Elements 3 and also the Mac Image Capture program. But recently after providing a preview and then starting a scan, the scanner bar scans to the end of the document and then just stopps. It stays at the end of the scanner for about 10mins and then returns to the front, in which time Photoshop has crashed and you have walked away!
I have uninstalled/reinstalled the Epson Scan driver software from their website and currently have version 3.1.0 installed. Rebooting is the only way to access the scanner when it stops working and today I deceide to have a look at the system logs.
The main system log shows the scanner activation and then posts and entry:
    "Feb 12 11:22:36 sue-craigies-imac-g5 crashdump[435]: EPSON Scanner crashed
    Feb 12 11:22:37 sue-craigies-imac-g5 crashdump[435]: crash report written to: /Users/suecraigie/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/EPSON Scanner.crash.log"
(I can foreward the Crash log to an email address if needed)
At the end of the system log a particular entry is repeated about 15 times:
"Feb 12 11:25:10 sue-craigies-imac-g5 /Applications/Image Capture.app/Contents/MacOS/Image Capture: CGContextSetLineWidth: invalid line width: negative values are not allowed."
Does anyone know what is going on, or more importantly, how to fix this?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Daniel Craigie

    Daniel Craigie-
How full is the hard drive that you are trying to save to? Not that it should matter, but have you tried scanning another document?
Is the scanner plugged directly into the Mac? Try it that way.
Disconnect all peripherals except keyboard, monitor, mouse and scanner and see if the problem goes away.
    Luck-

  • Why can't Photoshop 7.0 see my Epson scanner ?

    Hi everyone!
This is probably more a Photoshop/Epson compatability problem but I thot I'd post it here anyway, as I'm sure I'm not alone in my struggle..
Just upgraded to Photoshop 7.0, only to find that it can't see my scanner anymore (an Epson Perfection 1240U) when I try to access it via File>Import>TWAIN as I prefer to do. It worked fine in Photoshop 6.0 I have to point out.
I went to epson.com and downloaded the recommended driver updates, and now I can see the scanner listed under Import but still no dice when I try to start the device - my Mac tells me there is no scanner installed.
Anyone know enough to shed some light on this situation?
    Thanks in advance
    /Maurice

    Hi again Joe!
Well thanks, I tried your advice but to no avail.
I installed at: Apps>Adobe PS7>Plug-Ins>Import/Export>TWAIN>Contents>Mac OS (here I could also choose Mac OS Classic but didn't)>Epson Scanner
After getting a "Requires restart" message, the "Epson Screen Callibration" box opened up and wether I completed it or not, my Mac froze and I had to force-quit before re-starting manually. On restart, when clicking on Twain Installer to try again, I got a "Mac OS9 starting" warning!! Checking the Epson Scanner file I found it empty, even though I tried the process (& variations on the process) several times - always the same.
So really, I dunno what might work. Maybe removing all Twain files from everywhere and reinstalling but I dont think I dare! I can still scan from PS6 so that's what I'm doing..
Maybe I'll try Epson as you suggest, though I've heard they aren't so helpful.
    Thanks for your time Joe!

I have upgraded to Mountain Lion and have found that some of my software no longer works, notably Image Browser and also the Epson Scanner Perfection 3490 software. Is there a 'patch' or way to allow me to use these programmes especially the scanner.

Apple discontinued support for PowerPC apps with Lion, I think, so you're out of luck there. No patch coming, unfortunately. Best to upgrade whatever old applications you have or, since it seems like you're using some relatively old software, scout around for replacements that give you the functionality you need.
Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Print & Scan and select your scanner from the list--if it's not there you'll need to add it (start with the little plus icon). Once you have it in the list you can click on the Open Scanner button and a pretty barebones scanner driver will load for you. But Image Capture (as mentioned previously), found in your Applications folder, will probably do the job as adequately, or better, than your old scanner software.

  • Compatibility of epson scanner w/ intel imac

I have 2 new intel imacs, as well as a G4 imac. I'm trying to connect my new Epson scanner (Perfection 4990 Photo). When installing the software, it is looking for a classic environment. The online drivers from Epson's website seem to be for v10.4.4, and I'm running 10.4.10. Does anyone know whether this Epson scanner is just plain incompatible with the intel steel imacs? I have tried to contact Epson in various ways, all with no success. I'm a graphic designer and have previously had success w/ Epson scanners, but I'm tearing my hair out and ready to pack it up and return it for another brand. Their lack of support is outrageous. Does anyone share this experience or have any advice??? I'd appreciate it.

What do you mean that it is looking for the classic environment?
Are you able to open the .dmg successfully?
BTW, this is the discussion area for the much older iMac G3 CRT. You should post future questions in the Intel iMac discussion area.

  • Microsoft problem in image aquisition from Epson scanner

I cannot get my Epson Perfection 3200 Photo to scan even using its own Epson Scan program. I always used Photoshop 7 to scan and import the images easily. Then we moved to a new house, and when I went to reconnect everything, Microsoft doesn't recognize the Epson scanner no matter what I do. Epson technicians were not able to help. I believe that it's a Microsoft acquisition problem. It says "Could not open the TWAIN source". Should I just remove everything that has to do with Epson, even the plug-in in Photoshop, then recalibrate my monitor and reload Epson after that? --thank you, L Williamson

Re-installing is the first step, make sure after the un-install that you remove any vestiges of the install left over. Disconnect the scanner while doing this. After you are finished, shut off the computer, re-connect and start the scanner, start the computer again and let Windows find it and then install the latest software for the scanner.

  • Mini Doesn't Recognize Epson Printer via Firewire

    this is an odd one...
spent quite some time on tech support with Apple today.
a brand new Mac Mini will not print with an Epson photo stylus via firewire.
it recognizes the firewire connection, actually prints via usb, but will not print with the firewire.
what is even stranger, the epson printer utility will allow for printing test pages via firewire.
no matter how often the new Epson drivers (via website) are removed, reinstalled correctly, reset print system in printer set up utility, with permissions repaired, restarting, etc., it will not recognize the printer.
tried this with two working Epsons, which both work on an older iMAC, and a new G5.
firewire works with other items, like storage drives etc., and tried different cords.
    i am stumped.
    any clues?

When you add the printer, are you highlighting the printer in Printer Setup Utility, clicking *More Printers* and selecting *EPSON Firewire* in the Print Browser?

  • Photoshop Elements 8 import from Epson Scanner?

How can I get Photoshop Elements 8 to import from my Epson scanner?  On my previous computer, the scanner just showed up when I selected "Import" under File?  I've spent 2.0 hours with the supposed "tech support" in India and they had no idea.  I've been using Elements 4 on my iMac for years and it worked perfectly.  Help!
I'm starting to learn that I just spent good money for Elements 8 for nothing.  It would appear that Epson has refused to make a TWAIN plugin for Photoshop Elements 8 so it will talk to the scanner and the program seems to be filled with bugs wshen used with Snow Leopard.  Anyone have any answers?

There is a Photoshop Elements forum.
