FIOS router causing static and popping noises on computer audio

Hi, I'm a less than two week old FIOS internet user and am loving the speed and service but I have one problem. The FIOS router seems to be causing static popping noises my desktop computers audio that is connected to the FIOS router by the yellow Ethernet cable. Theses noises don't occur on any of the laptops connected to the router by the wireless or when I connect a laptop to the router via a Ethernet cable.
Ways I found to eliminate the noises temporary:
Restarting the desktop computer or shutting down then turning on the desktop computer.
Ways I found to eliminate the noises permanently
Turning off and unplugging the router.
Hooking up the FIOS router via the Ethernet cable to a laptop. I unfortunately do not have a wireless built into my desktop.
What I've tried and failed
First I thought it was the Ethernet cable, so I replaced it. The noises did not go away.
I thought it might be the headset I use which are connected to the computer by a usb port. Unplugging the headset and using earphones which are connect to the computer by the audio slot did not eliminate the noises.
Then I contacted Verizon, and they thought it might be a faulty router, so they sent me a new one. The noises unfortunately did not go away.
I then thought the noises might be occurring because the router was close to the computer. So I moved the router as far away as possible from the computer (its connect to the router by a Ethernet cable so it wasn't that far) but the noises didn't go away.
Notes & Points
The noises do not start the moment I turn on the router and computer, but a hour or two after.
I think I've narrowed the problem down to occurring only when the desktop computer is connected to the router by the Ethernet cable. Though replacing the Ethernet cable has not resolved the issue.
I also have found that location of the FIOS router also doesn't matter since the noises did not return even though the router was right up against the computer when I connected the FIOS router to my laptop.
I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64, 3.5 gigs of ram, and a dual 2.0 GHz processor.
So that sums up my problem. If you guys have any tips or ideas of how to fix my issue, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a shielding problem on the AUDIO cables or a grounding issue.   PC sound systems are notorious for having lousy audio cables feeding (I regularly pickup the local FM station on my speakers).
Try replacing the audio cables with better quality shield cables and see if that helps.
Are the router, speakers, and PC all plugged into the same outlet?  Are they all polarized plugs?  If note, try flipping the power plug on the non-polarized connections.
The sound could be coming from interference INSIDE the PC itself ... the proximity of sound cables inside and the audio chipset to the ethernet chipset.   You didn't indicate if the audio/ethernet are on the motherboard or seperate cards.   If they are seperate cards, try relocating the cards furfher from one another inside the chassis and also look at the audio cable (particularly the analog cable that runs from the CD to the audio card to make sure it's not routed past or near the ethernet electronics.
How far distant is the router from the PC?  If you pull the ethernet cable from the router (not turn if off, unplug the ethernet cable running to the PC), does it stop?

  • Cracking and popping noise Sound Blaster x-Fi Platinum Running on Windows 7 32 Bit

Hi everyone, I am using a x-fi platinum card and it simply wont work with Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit. I have been using both windows 7 public beta and release candidate for last 8 months. Let me give you my PC configuration.
    Intel Pentium D 3.4GHz
2GB DDR2 Memory running in Dual Channel Mode
ATI Radeon HD 4670 Video Card With 52MB DDR3
It has a built in sound on mother board (Disabled at the moment)
With the above configuration I tried using my x-fi platinum on both Windows XP and Windows Vista, and it worked perfectly without any problem. When I upgraded to windows 7 beta for the first time with the creative beta driver for windows 7, I noticed that whenever there is any on screen activity, such as minimizing and maximizing windows, switching windows, scrolling, photo or webpage transition, etc. there are cracking and popping noises. And if there are continuous or too much activity on the screen at some times the sound card completely fails and unable to provide any sound. When I took the sound card out and enabled the on board audio chip (Realtek HD Audio), the sound was fine without any cracking or popping issue. I eventually upgraded to Windows 7 RC and also currently using the latest driver for windows 7 and I am still having the same problem. As a reasult I am being forced to use the on board realtek audio solution which provides really crappy sound compared to x-fi platinum.
It appears that the problem exists only when I try to run x-fi platinum on windows 7. I really hope there is a solution for this otherwise I will have to sell my beloved sound card which I have been using for at least 3 years on ebay and stick with low quality Realtek HD sound system.

Not all of them, I have none of those problems with my Xtreme Music. This won't help the guy asking about the Xtreme Audio (search the Sound Blaster section for the one for your card), but using this,

  • Static and popping sound

I have a Pavillion dv5-2129 Notebook and there is a popping noise and static coming from the front left speaker. Has the speaker blown?

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Shutdown the notebook, remove the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Next, hold down the power button for a full minute.  Leave the battery out and plug in the AC Adapter and start the notebook.  Do you still get the noise in the speaker?

  • BAD static and background noise on Amplitube, with iRig and iPad 3

    Hi all,
This has been dealt with in a different forum on garageband, but I am interested to find out if others are having this issue. To note - this is with
    Amplitube
    iRig
Ipad 3 ( this part is important )
    Scenario;
If I uplug my guitar from my iRig (idea being to remove all external noise influences) I get a constant clicking and fuzz  (seems to sit around 160bpm). Making sure its not the inbuilt metronome, and going to IK's website to follow all directions specifically and exactly - this noise will not go away. If i record a track - the noise gets recorded with, and it can be easily reproduced in the following scenario ->  an ipad3, iRing and amplitube. In fact, i have tried various IK Multimedia apps ( ampkit, iRig Recorder and Amplitube free and purchased!) and the noise seems to be consistent with their software.!
First off - i went back to the music store, who tried various iRig's - all had the same issue. We even tried my iRig in the store's own iphone - and it sounded perfect. So it wasnt the irig itself.
In tandem with this above - i had raised a case with IK multimedia ( Ticket #311578 ) who after hearing about the music store episode - mentioned that it must be my ipad. So i made a booking with apple and off to the store i went.
Apple noticed the noise straight away (and its loud in there during lunch breaks!) - and replaced my Ipad3 on the spot!. No questions asked (he even thanked for doing so much background work to identify the issue)
Guess what - noise still there.
Apple then tried an ipad1, ipad2 and ipad mini - all of which DID NOT have this issue. So, it is only the ipad3.
Apple then (to their credit) raised it higher within apple to R&D, who spent a week on it and responded by saying ( and i quote ) " Nothing has specifically changed between the headphone jack on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation or ipad mini, so it is a compatibility issue between your iring and your device and the 3rd generation ipads, and please contact the company (IK Multimedia) to see if they have any solutions for that"
So i then responded the IK multimedia. What did they do?? They closed the case without any communication. I waited a week ( thinking they would be working on it ), when i logged back in and saw that my last email had been doctored to look like i was a happy customer and apple was at fault........ nice.
So i wrote back and re-opened the case. They responded by saying
"We do apologize for any inconvenience caused.  However, in this case, it appears the issue may have to be followed up with Apple, not with IK Multimedia"
Not sure what to do - its really really bad. If I turn a distortion pedal on, or try to record anything - it drives me crazy. Even my girlfriend who knows ZIP about anything technical said "Whats that clicking noise when you play guitar?"
Im just looking for some others out there who may have this problem. As it is easily reproducable - surely I cant be the only one?
    love to hear from you
    Trav
ps - I tried to post this in IK Multimedia's blog, but they locked it so no-one could respond. nice.

I have looked into this ticket, the threads created and our support notes.
1 - We have tested all of our iRig products with the new iPad 3 and they all work fine with AmpliTube.
2 - Any  thread created on the IK forums are locked once passed to support.
3 - We are more than happy to work with Apple as we have done in the past. Hook the support up with Apple support and we'll work on it.
4 - Support referred you to Apple as the issue is with the iOS device and not our product. (Confirmed by your own testing at the apple store)
If there is something we can do to help, we will do it. Period. We want our customers to be happy and make good music. If you'd like a new iRig, lets make an exchange happen. Want to try different one, lets work out the price difference, but the issue here isn't with AmpliTube or iRig.

  • Updated to 3.1 and CPU maxed out causing click and pops

I upgraded to Mainstage 3.1 and now the CPU meter is maxed out when I change presets and also MainStage runs at 100 % causing clicks and breaks in the sound when using a vst plugin S-Gear by Scuffham.  Earlier versions work fin at 20% to 50% CPU.  I can't go back to version 3.0.4.
    Help!

In preferences, try raising the I/O Buffer size in preferences. Then lower the driver latency setting. It seemed to help CPU load.

  • Fios Router (Coax Connected) and pfSense box, how to do this?

Hello, I have a Actiontec M1424WR Rev. 1 and a HP Proliant DL380 G5 (Running pfSense) and would like to use the HP Proliant as the "router" yet still be able to use the Actiontec router for wireless operations. I would perfer not to have to run a ethernet line from the ONT to the pfSense server its self. Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It's possible, yes. If you plan to make the pfSense box your primary router and Firewall, your best bet is to run Ethernet from the ONT to the pfSense box, and then put everything behind your box.

  • Latest iTunes update caused static and skips in music

I'm not quite sure how to check what update I last did, but ever since I did it, my music has had a static sound and skips on occasion. I know my friend who also does not have a Mac is experiencing the same thing and I'm wondering if it's connected to the latest update.

There is an alternative downloader for 64-bit editions of Windows here:
iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
that seems to address the most of the playback issues - including problems with Bluetooth devices - that some users have been reporting with the full 64-bit version (the alternative installer here is the same architecture as most previous "64-bit" versions of iTunes, i.e., a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer).  The "for older video cards" label appears to be something of a misnomer as some people have reported that this corrects problems found on current / high-spec systems.
Some users have reported that after installing this alternative version it is necessary to adjust the "Play audio using" selection (normally to "Direct Sound" rather than "Windows Audio Session", though this may vary based on your audio hardware/drivers) in Edit > Preferences > Playback to restore glitch-free audio (one part of the reported symptoms is that the "Direct Sound" choice isn't available, usually in Windows 8).
Another possible remedy relates to a potential clash between the 64-bit version of iTunes 12 and Google Chrome; some users have reported that uninstalling Chrome (not just not having it running) resolves the iTunes playback issues without having to install the alternative version referred to above.
Finally, you may want to think about reverting to iTunes 12.0 - see Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

  • Usb will not open and pop up says computer will not accept it

In transferring files from a mac mini to an imac, I was able to open and load a usb.  But when I inserted the usb into the i mac, it would not open.  When I returned the usb to the mini to retrieve the files, it would not open there as well.  A pop up now appears on both screens saying it will not work with either computer.  Is it possible to retrieve the files and load them into a usb that will work?

You mean you deleted the files on the mini!?
Did you look in the trash can for the files?
You can try to recover the files on the flash drive & the mini hd.  Stop using the mini.  Connect via firewire to your othe mac in target disk mode.
I'd try running disk utility on the flash drive.

  • Unplugging all network devices from Fios router prevents DVR freezing and remote control lock ups.

    All,
I recently had a Verizon tech visit my house due to constant DVR and remote control freezing. TV content was freezing whether it was locally recorded, pulled from another DVR in the house, or On Demand. On a hunch after the tech tested everything and was about to leave, he unplugged my gigabit switch from the Fios router. Lo and behold everything started running perfectly. Since to the tech, the problem was solved, he closed the case and was on his way. The probem is of course I have more devices than the built in router switch provides ports for. My network is compised of an 8 port Netgear gigabit switch downstream from the Fios router with two wireless access points (with their own built in gigbait switches) connecting to the Netgear gigabit switch. There are no loops in the switch topology. I've tried changing out the router, the gigabit switch, removing the wireless acces points individually as well as plugging the access points directly into the Fios router switch (one at a time with no Netgear switch in the middle) and all scenarious cause the DVR/remote control freeezing to come back. The only devices I can plug into the Fios router without causing freezes are PC's....anything with it's own switch essentially brings the network to it's knees. If anyone has an idea how to get my network back in one piece AND make the DVR's/remotes behave, I'd greatly appreciate the help!
    My Fios equipment:

    5 Motorola HD-DVRs all QIP 7232-2 running software release 1.9.1 platform build 25.39 (Oct. 22, 2012)
    Specific config:
75/35 Fios connecting via ethernet from ONT. Set-top boxes connect to Fios router coax port via powered splitter.
*All SNR/dB mesasurements taken by the tech from the set-top boxes and router are well within spec.
Fios router provides DHCP addressing. Wireless N access points are configured for roaming with the same SSID and non-overlapping channels. Access points are not providing routing or IP adressing...all layer 3 and up services still provided by Fios router

I am inclined to echo several of the "tns" comments, particularly with respect to your splitter.  My layout is based on a standard 8-port splitter of the type usually supplied in a VZ install.  In addition I do have a ChannelPlus device that functions as a powered splitter, but its use is limited to distribution of secondary TV signals to older analog TVs.  My first point then is that this may be an offender as "tns" has suggested.
In addition, I'd describe your wiring as "non-standard" (red-colored items in the above diagram)  As you're no doubt aware, with 75/35 you don't really need Cat5e from the ONT (your original diagram).  It seems the highest tiers do require it, but in "standard" installations this run is coax directly to an 8-port non-powered splitter (below diagram), then from that splitter via coax to all STBs and CableCards, other TVs, et.), and also to the Actiontec.   Subsequent feeds from the Actiontec to wired devices (including WAPs) are via Ethernet (typically Cat 5e).
In fact I don't immediately see how your STBs get additional services such as On Demand and IMG with the wiring shown in your diagram (perhaps someone can help me out here).  In "standard" installs the Actiontec must be connected via coax to the ONT to provide such services to other network clients.  I don't see that requirement being met here.
For starters I'd recommend that you change your service from WAN Ethernet to WAN coax.  This can easily be accomplished over the telephone.  Then I'd run coax directly from the ONT to the Actiontec as in my revised diagram below (blue-colored items).  If your setup can manage with this arrangement, I think it will help greatly with the "freezing" issue.

Subsequent Note:  You provided additional info while I was composing a response, and I'd  like to offer another comment.  Structured wiring "panels" of the type usually available are pre-configured to provide data, phone and video.  This usually means that one is in certain respects limited by the ideas of the panel designer.  I have what can be called a structured wiring layout, but it really is composed of individual small custom networks for  each service (automation, security, video, data, telco, etc.), configured so that all wiring terminates in "home run" fashion at a central panel (a few details here: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Home-Networking/Cmon-Show-Us-Your-Network/m-p/481733#M765 ).  This layout makes it easier to make adjustments (and there have been quite a few over the intervening years).  I'm thinking that in your case you may have to abandon the powered splitter (presumably) built into the panel in order to avoid your present fix.
Subsequent Subsequent Note:   From your description it seems that you are using more than a single "whole house" DVR to supply programming to other devices.  This is a bit puzzling to me because somewhere along the line I recall reading that only a single whole house DVR was allowed on the network.  Can you elaborate a bit?

  • Router and access point connected to FIOS router

Here's my situation.  Just installed Verizon Fios which supplies their own Actiontec Wireless router.  I have an existing network which comprises a WRTG54Gv6 which was connected to a DSL modem for internet access originally and a WAP54G accesss point as a Repeater to extend the network wirelessly.  I have quite a few wired and wireless connection to this netwrok and wish to retain these devices. My question is, based on where I had to connect the new FIOS router(which is where the access point is) can I connect the WAP54 to the FIOS router(through a switch) and allow the combined WAP54/WRT54G network to still provide my network services and deactivate the wireless service from the FIOS router. How do I configure the FIOS router, the WRTG54 and the WAP54(if change neded).
Thanks in advanced if anyone can help.

Easiest way to configure the Verizon FIOS with Linksys is - Leave the Verizon FIOS unplugged from the Linksys Router and disconnect it's power cable.
    1. Connect a computer to the Linksys Router it's Internet Port...
    2. Access the web interface of the Linksys Router, change it's default address to 10.10.10.1 and leave it's DHCP Server Settings 'Enabled'. Once done you should Power cycle the Linksys Router.Don't change the Router Mode.
3.Connect Verizon FIOS from it's Ethernet Port to the Linksys Router on the Internet Port.
    4. See if you can access the Internet...
You can also have a look at this link to connect two routers. However, both the router's used in the link are linksys routers but you can still follow the link.

  • BEGGING for any help w/ FIOS router problem.

    Hi All,
I am a noob at networking and in desperate need of help.  I just got FIOS installed for phone, TV, and internet.   I am at my wits end, and the wife wants me to return it all and get cable back.  The internet connection they set up is via coax, and I was given the Actiontec modem/router.  Since my issue is complex, and I know people will need all the info to help me, I’ll try and break this post down.
My problem:  I need to use my Linksys WRT600N wireless router.   All of my laptops have draft n cards, and I also need to connect my (networked) hard drive to it (the Linksys supports a usb connection).  I also have many things I need to connect to it.  FIOS said I could do this when I called to order, but the techs who arrived said they didn’t know how.
My set up:   I have 4 wired electronics, 1 network USB hard drive, Vonage, and several wireless g and n devices that I need to connect to the router so I would really like to keep mine.  However I am willing to buy a new item (bridge or access point) if anybody knows one that will definitely work and meet my needs (4 LAN ports, a usb port, and n access).  Somebody suggested the “D-Link DAP1522 Xtreme” claiming it won’t have any of the problems I am facing now.  If anyone can confirm that please let me know.
What I have done so far:  As suggested earlier, I just plugged my router into one of the LAN ports but that didn’t work.  So then I tried making the FIOS router a bridge, and that ended up making the TVs not have guide data, or widgets, or VOD (but my router worked).  I also followed the directions here… ( DSL REPORTS TOPIC: www.dslreports.com/faq/verizonfios/3.0_Networking#16077  ) but nothing has allowed me to use my router, and keep the TVs getting the guide, widgets, and VOD.   It also resulted in me having to call FIOS b/c even after restoring the router defaults, I couldn’t get back online and they had to “reissue me a new ip”.  I don’t know what else to do, or even what I’m doing wrong.  I have read so many conflicting posts and would just like step by step “noob-ish” instructions that can solve my problem.  (Or if anybody knows something I can buy that will just work when I plug it in).
I have been told FIOS won’t support this and not to bother calling tech support.   I’m extremely mad that they lied to me to get me to agree to the install, then only told me this router info after all my lines have been cut.  I am posting my FIOS router info below, along with the Linksys router.  If anybody could help me, or send me in the right direction id be forever grateful.
    My  FIOS info is:
    Router:  Actiontect
    Firmware Version:   4.0.16.1.56.0.10.11.3
    Model Name:   MI424-WR
    Hardware Version:   D
    Physical Connection Type:   Coax
    Broadband Connection Type:   DHCP
My Linksys Router:Linksys WRT600n info located here:  LINSYS ROUTER: www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT600N
     Thanks in advance-
    Best-
    Kurt

Here is how I would set it up.
Since you already have your linksys router setup the way you want and some of the equipment may have static IP's I would change the ip of the Actiontec.
Your linksys is most likely 192.168.1.1 which is the same as the actiontec. Change the IP of the actiontec to 192.168.2.1.  You now have two networks so to speak.
You plug the wan of the Linksys into one of the LAN connections on the actiontec.  Your linksys now should get an ip like 192.168.2.2 on the wan side and hand out 192.168.1.x ip's on the LAN side.  The linksys doesn't care where it gets its WAN ip from.  You will most likley have to reboot any STB's so they get a new IP from the Actiontc.
I had to do such a setup when I was setting up an Xbox for someone who also had a home medical business.  They had a firewall that wouldn't let the Xbox  connect to the outside world and no one knew how to configure it.  I hooked up a linksys wireless router before the firewall and had the xbox connect to that.  The new linksys then fed the firewall.
I would also disable the wireless on the actiontec just because it may interfere radio wise with the linksys.  Also do not disable DHCP on any of the routers with this setup.

Has anyone heard of this issue yet..Is there something Im missing or is this a typical situation of upgrading my system to far? Thanks,

    Oh... oh! comp = computer!
Sorry, I re-read this post several times and I couldn't figure out why having a fast compressor would cause clicks and pops... I thought maybe the attack was set so fast that it was causing artifacts. I must be working too hard...
FWIW, I don't have any issues with Amplitube 2 on 10.5.6 with Logic 8.0.2. Buffer size, perhaps?
