Fire Wire 400 vs 800 vs USB speed

A Fire Wire 800 port has a faster rate of transfer than both the Fire Wire 400 and a USB 2.0. Is a Fire Wire 400 port faster than a USB port and if so is it considerably faster than the USB.

Hi mick1964;
USB 2.0 is the slowest. I know it has a quoted rate that is greater then FW400 but that it burst rate which it is not capable of sustaining.
Generally FW400 is about 40% quicker then USB 2.0 for sustain data transfers.
FW800 is faster then FW400.

can you use fw400 from old mac book to fw 800 external drivers i have seen adapters the other way around but not this way

    Yes, here's some on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_19?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field -keywords=firewire+400+to+800+cable&sprefix=firewire+400+to+800%2Celectronics%2C 271
Or if you just want an adapter to use an existing 800 cable http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_19?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field -keywords=firewire+400+to+800+cable&sprefix=firewire+400+to+800%2Celectronics%2C 271#/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_4_16?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=firewire+ 400+to+800+adapter+for+mac&sprefix=firewire+400+to+%2Celectronics%2C264&rh=n%3A1 72282%2Ck%3Afirewire+400+to+800+adapter+for+mac

Help!  My fire wire  400 ports have stopped functioning, and my 800 is now having problems....I'm getting a protools message telling me there is a problem with my firewire.

First, you have posted in the wrong area, this is for PPCs and you have an intel.
Try repairing permissions and resetting the PRAM.

  • Connecting old Fire wire 400 External Drive with no FW 800 ports, how?

I have a fire wire 400 drive and so i switched to mac pro which doesn't have 400 things. so i can't connect it.
    ANyway to do it?

Firewire 800 is fully backwards compatible with Firewire 400. You need a "bilingual" firewire cable or adapter to plug the Firewire 400 drive in your Firewire 800 port.

  • If I move from Firewire 400 to 800 will download speed of video increase?

    Hi,
I have just upgraded from a MacMini (which had firewire 400) to a new iMac which only has firewire 800. I have a 3 year old JVC digital camcorder (GR-D340EK) with ilink out and previously used a Belkin cable to connect to my Macmini. My question is if I now purchase an ilink to FW800 cable for the iMac will the video download at twice the rate or am I just as well to purchase a cheaper FW 400 to 800 adapter, which I understand would only give me FW400 speeds (and could be used for other devices too)?
    Any advice guys?
    Regards
    Shakey

Either way, the speed of the connection will be the same. The device itself is FireWire 400, so it will not go any faster.
You can often find the cable for about the same price as the adapter. What you need, if the camera has the smaller FireWire connector, is a 9-pin to 4-pin cable, like this one

  • X220i Express card with Fire Wire 400 adaptor

I'd like to know if there is a suitable Expresscard for the x220i that has a Fire Wire port.  I already bought one but it didn't slot in properly although it does fit an older IBM laptop that I have.  I need to download stuff from a video camera and don't want to buy the wrong thing again.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Solved!

    Hello,
My understanding is that the X220i (like my X220) has an ExpressCard/54 slot, that is, an ExpressCard slot which is 54mm wide.  Any 54mm or 34mm wide ExpressCard should fit in there, but older 16-bit PCMCIA or 32-bit CardBus cards will not, as they have different connectors.
OWC, Rain Computers, SIIG, Sonnet, StarTech and SYBA all make FireWire ExpressCard adapters which should work fine with your X220i.

  • Fire Wire 400 to charge 5th generation battery

    Hi,
I know it's already been discussed but I've readen opposite answers. Is it clearer now ?
I've got a wall charger with FW400 connector, plus a FW400/FW400 cable, plus an adapator connector FW400/iPod dock connector (from Belkin I think).
This is for charging battery at home without turning on my PC.
The same configuration but instead of wall charger it is a car charger with FW400 connector and the rest is the same.
This is for charging battery in my car of course.
Do both of those solutions work fine ? (because some people say that FW is bad for the battery) thanks for your answers

I can tell you for a fact that I have charged the three iPods that I have (1st gen, mini, and nano) via Firewire with no problems from both my computer and wall charger. I'm not sure what kind of car charger you have, but I'd be fairly certain that it would not cause battery problems. I frequent these forums regularly and I've never heard of firewire causing problems versus USB.

  • HT2477 transfer accounts with fire wire 400 cable?

I want to transfer two user accounts and their data from my old iMac 21" to a new a Mac-mini. What's next after i connect my firewire 400 cable?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413
In step #8 be sure to turn the disclosure triangle to choose the accounts to migrate.
If this is the first time you booted your Mac and you're in setup assistant then, you want to choose at least your Admin. If this is after you've already been through Setup Assistant then be careful you don't duplicate the account you already have.

  • New 27" has only 1 800 Fire Wire

I am considering buying a new iMac 27". I see that it has only 1, 800 Fire Wire port and no 400 FW port. I use my computer for editing video via FCS3. One of the cameras I have is a Canon XHA1 it's output is Fire Wire 400. I import footage to a external drive which is a Lacie 1.5 tb with a 400-800 Fire Wire port.
Is the connector and cord for 400 & 800 Fire Wire the same or are they physically different?
What is the best way for me to solve this problem? The best work flow? Could I capture from the camera 400 FW into the iMac 800 FW port and then transfer the data to the Lacie?
Of the new iMac 27" models how much faster would the Quad i5 or i7 be over the duo 3.06 model? Let's assume that we were transcoding a 1 gb project? My current computer has a duo 2.16 how would it compare? Is it correct to assume that because 3.06 is almost 50% more than 2.16 that there would be a 50% increase in speed or in other words the 3.06 would do the job in half the time?
    Thanks
    Kent

Having a FW 800 port is no problem, the port will also support FW 400 so connecting to your camera is no issue. The cable connectors are physically different however you should only need an adapter like this
As far as your work flow that's up to you, you can daisy chain your Lacie to the Canon so the iMac will see both devices. That means when you want to import video you can have it go directly from the camera to the Lacie HD if you want.
As far as how much faster the Quad core machines will be is anyones guess at this point because they haven't begun shipping so bench tests have been done. As you probably know they're expected to ship sometime this month, I'm sure that soon after they ship different bench tests will be done and then your can get some real data. When will that be, my guess is within within several weeks of their ship date. Until then everything is speculation and people quoting numbers are guessing, it's just that simple.
    Hope this helps.

  • The new Mac Book Pro and Fire Wire

    Hi,
can I use the new MacBook'sPro Fire 800 plug with a 400 connection? Are there any adapters? Otherwise what to do with all my Fire Wire 400 applications?
    Cheers
    Hartmut

    Hi nvelotta,
FW800 uses the 9-pin Firewire connector.
    FW400 uses both 6-pin (powered) and 4-pin (non-powered) connectors.
Most video cameras that use Firewire use the 4-pin connectors because they do not require power over the cable, and also because it is smaller. What you most likely need is this:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=102&cp_id=10301&cs_id=1030104&pid=3541&seq=1&format=2
It's a 9-pin to 4-pin cable. However, you said that the 4-pin connector does not fit into your camera. Does the 6-pin fit into the camera? If neither of these fit, the port on your camera is not a Firewire port. USB plugs are strictly rectangular. It could be one of those.
Let me know what conclusion you reach and I can help you find an appropriate cable!

  • Fire wire for backup

I'm purchasing an external hard drive for TM and hard drive purposes. Is it an advantage to choosing one that has a Fire Wire connection vs a regular USB Connection??

V.K. is, as usual, entirely correct.
You may do better with F/W 400 vs. USB, though, as many think it's much more reliable. If you do get a USB drive, get one with it's own power supply, as many people have trouble with those that take their power from the Mac via the USB cable.
The amount of power available on USB ports is limited, and if some other device like a printer wants some while the disk is busily doing a backup, the disk may not get enough momentarily and the backup may fail.

  • Fire Wire and Power PC

    Hi everyone
Just bought a 500GB La Cie HDD from Apple store to use with Time Machine on my 2011 MBP with OS X Lion 10.7.2.
Several cables included: FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0. I tried them all, but all I get is this annoying message: "Lion does not support Power PC"
So, no power to the disk and no Time Machine. I find it a bit strange that Apple Store sells this HDD without a single word of warning that the device will not run under the newest OS X. Or, am I missing something ? Is there a way out of this ?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi m,
I don't recall exactly what the issue is/was, but there have been other similar posts about La Cie HDs not being compatible (that's difficult to believe these days). According to them, it's a firmware issue which they were going to fix (that was weeks if not months ago). Bottom line: contact La Cie tech support (and if you're still in the time window in which you can get a refund for it, I'd run, not walk, to get rid of the La Cie; any company whose chief advertising ploy is bragging about some supposedly famous designer who created the rectangle to house the HD has their priorities ALL mixed up, as evidenced by this firmware issue; ymmv).

  • No power from Fire Wire port to my audio interface

I face this problem after my set-up always has worked: I have a Quata Fire 610 Audio interface, powered thru my Fire wire 400. For some reason there is no power, and my Mac does not recognize the unit. I have tried both Fire Wire ports, and none of them works. The unit works fine on my other Mac (iMac G4) Is there any way I solve this problem. I have done the the disc utilities.
    Peter

FireWire ports have been known to fail.
Did you shut down (power OFF) the Power Mac G5, and restart? Did you also try the port on the front panel? Did you try a different FireWire cable? Is it possible to try another FireWire device on the ports, as a test?
You can also try a reset of the PMU or SMU (power management). Depending on your model

    Hi all
could anyone tell me which PCI express Fire Wire 400 card uses the Texas Instruments chip set? Have been looking all over but could not find one so far.
All help welcome on this one!

I use an Aaxeon, but there are many others, including SiiG, Nitro etc.

  • Error messahe re fire wire

when I plug my iPod in to my car charger, I get a error message words like " Can not connect using a fire wire connection, switch to a usb connection..." at the bottom is states "Push middle button to dismiss", What does this mean. Also when I push middle button the error message does not go away.

further to this post, this also happens when I sync to my computer. After the saync process and i disconnect, and try to play music this error shows. The actual wording is "Fireware connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided: and again at the bottpom is says "Press Center to dismess". And the error does not dismiss when I push center.
