Fire wire - connecting / disconnecting devices

When connecting a fire wire device like a HD or camera for example, do you need to switch the device and computer of or can you connected it while the computer and device is on like USB ?
Thanks

Like USB. Be sure to use the finder to eject the device before disconnecting it or turning it off.

  • Ipod nano and fire wire connection

Is a fire wire connection compatible with the second generation ipod nano. It came from the factory with a USB 2.0 cable. I have a 20 gig ipod that was supplied with a firewire connection. Are these two interchangeable with either unit? Awaiting a reply, thanks.

FireWire cables cannot be used to sync an iPod nano or Fifth Generation iPod.

If it's slow on startup it would be extensions loading or LaunchDaemons starting up.
You should have a look in:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/Extensions
You can count out anything in your home folder and it shouldn't put anything in /System as that's reserved for Apple.

  • 2 fire wire connections

I have a Fantom 120 x hard drive. It has 2 fire wire ports. I have 2 computers. Can I hook one up to each fire wire port at the same time? I don't want to try it until I hear it's ok. I couldn't get any info on the drive web site.
    Thanks, Don.

No you can't do that. The other firewire port is to create "chains" of firewire devices.
You may actually break your device by plugging it into two computers at the same time. Don't do it!

  • Which video cameras w/HD have a Fire Wire connectivity?

Recently, I bought a Sony video camera w/HD that had a USB cable to transfer data from a video camera HD to IMac. However, when I've attempted to do that, an application IMovie informed me that I must have a Fire Wire cable which video camera didn't have. What kind video cameras are recommend for easy transfer data to IMac?

When you say HD you mean Hard Drive, right?

Any MiniDV camcorder will have a firewire connection.

  • Fire wire connection

I was told this might be a just a software issue however I'm unsure about that.
My camera connected to Final Cut keeps telling me that no device is not connected when it WAS working the night before and nothing was disconnected.
When trying to capture footage, I even went to iMovie and iMovie won't recognize the camera anymore. I'm using a 4 to 6 point Firewire for HDV footage, so I even tried it on a older computer and it wasn't recognize it. I thought it might just be the firewire until a friend tried uploading his camera with his different connections including USB to the computer and nothing was still recognized.
The 2 externals and the USB for a digital camera for Kodak all still work just fine though. The older laptop I tried it on probably isn't a viable source as that things is practically falling apart.
Any ideas let me know. Thanks.

have you tried rebooting the computer?
have you tried another firewire cable?
dose the device show up in system profiler, under firewire?

  • Fire Wire Connect

I have an older iMac ( pod type ) without a wireless connection. I have a MAC Mini. I have a firewire connecting the two.
I can't figure our how to access the iMac from the Mini. I've tried everything that I know but the iMac will not show up on the Mini. ( shouldn't it show up as if it were an external hard drive ? )
    Any suggestions ?
    Thank you.

When you are starting the iMac, are you holding down the T key - to put it into FireWire Target Disk Mode?

Have tried everything including several restores, set up as new phone. Also deleted firmware file in itunes and restored with fresh firmware all results in the same symptom. Have talked with 3 Apple tech support and no solution. Also tried another 4s 5.1.1 with stereo and it worked perfect so definately an issue with my phone not cable etc....

  • Fire wire - # and number of pins?

I want to add an external drive to my mac mini (non intel), and I plan to do this with a fire wire connection. I have found that fire wire cables are defined by the number of pins (4 or 6) an number IEEE-1396 or 1394. I believe I need to buy a cable, IEEE-1394 with 6 pins on each end. Can anyone confirm this belief before I buy the cable.
    Thank you for your comments.

    Hi,
I admit I have never heard of IEEE 1396 before you posted it here.
However a quick googling came up with quite some hits.
To my knowledge (and from the Google hits) it seems that IEEE 1396 is used to determine a 6-pin to 6-pin cable connection, whereas IEEE 1394 is used for a 6-pin to 4-pin cable connection.
4-pin ports are usually only used with external devices, that don't need/want to draw power from the Firewire cable (like Digital cameras and the like) or computers (like Notebooks) that don't provide power over the Firewire cable.
Nonetheless the only 'official' name for Firewire of any kind is IEEE 1394 with the addition of small letters like 'a' 'b' or 'c' to distinguish the differences in speed (Firewire 400; Firewire 800).
So look at the Firewire ports you want to connect with the cable to determine which cable you need.
Take care and thanks for the star.

  • Fire wire for backup

I'm purchasing an external hard drive for TM and hard drive purposes. Is it an advantage to choosing one that has a Fire Wire connection vs a regular USB Connection??

V.K. is, as usual, entirely correct.
You may do better with F/W 400 vs. USB, though, as many think it's much more reliable. If you do get a USB drive, get one with it's own power supply, as many people have trouble with those that take their power from the Mac via the USB cable.
The amount of power available on USB ports is limited, and if some other device like a printer wants some while the disk is busily doing a backup, the disk may not get enough momentarily and the backup may fail.

  • Error messahe re fire wire

when I plug my iPod in to my car charger, I get a error message words like " Can not connect using a fire wire connection, switch to a usb connection..." at the bottom is states "Push middle button to dismiss", What does this mean. Also when I push middle button the error message does not go away.

further to this post, this also happens when I sync to my computer. After the saync process and i disconnect, and try to play music this error shows. The actual wording is "Fireware connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided: and again at the bottpom is says "Press Center to dismess". And the error does not dismiss when I push center.

  • Using a fire wire.

My ipod requires a fire wire to charge off the computer. Unfortunately, there are no ports on the computer HP Pavilion that will accept the fire wire plug in. They are made for USB connections. Is there an adaptor I can use to plug into the USB and then plug the fire wire connection in?

Just buy an AC wall adapter/charger that plugs in and gives you a standard Firewire output to charge Firewire devices. Apple sells them as do a number of third party vendors.
    Cheers,
    Patrick
