FIRE WIRE PROBLEM

every time I try to insert my firewire a sign comes up saying that I have inserted a disk containing no vloums that MAC osx can read . And then it gioves me 3 options.
1. Initialize
2. Ignore
3. eject
Please somebody help me. The firewire has all the music files of my clients. I can not afford to loose them.

afarid:
Not too many options left, I'm afraid.
Try this:
1. Shut down computer. Power down Firewire drive and disconnect from computer and power source.
2. Remove battery and optical drive from computer leaving power supply connected. Reset PRAM (Hold down Command + Option + P + R while hitting the Power button). Allow computer to chime 5 times, then release.
3. After computer boots go to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility. Run Repair Permissions.
4. Shut down computer. Replace battery and Optical Drive. Reconnect Firewire Drive and connect it to the power. Start Firewire Drive.
5. Boot computer from TechTool Pro. Does the FW drive show up there? If not we're running out of options.
Plan B
The next option is to see if are able to backup the FW drive. You can then erase and reformat and restore data. If that is not possible go to Plan C.
Plan C
I am out of options. At this point I would seek the professional assistance of a Data Rescue opteration. (A Google search will come with services like this one).
Good luck.

• FINAL CUT CRASH - FIRE WIRE PROBLEM

Alright, this is just my last shot.
I use final cut pro 3 to edit videos, and a miniDV sony camera too. (I even bought new fire wire cables to double check the problem)
Always worked with them, no sweat.
But once I upgraded my iBook with the latest OS version TIGER, my nightmare started. My iBook is the second latest one, still on warranty .....
Final Cut crashes every time I open the LOG AND CAPTURE window. No way, it's impossible .... I tried to re-install the software. The only way (it seems really weird and odd) is to use iMovie to import them.
It's very crazy. I tried the same in a friends computer, and apparently is his, just works fine.

OHH Yes absolutly, I send my originals CD's to apple. I pay 49 dolars for the Crossgrade and Then I install everythiing. I have MY oun lisence all original. But I dont know what is going on.

• Fire Wire problem on mini (mid 2010)

Hi,
i just bought an external hdd (Seagate GoFlex for MAC 1,5TB) which i want to connect using FIRE WIRE 800, but now I notice that the fire wire port on the mini has a different dimension (much smaller)  Can i use it (do i need an adapter? and will this small port power the disk?)
I checked the disk on my 2011 Mac book pro (which has the right size of port) and it works like a charm!
can anybody advise me on this!! thx, as i already opened the disk i cannot return it anymore so i really need a solution on how to use it.
thx
peter

Hi,
can you indicate which adapter to use, and second of all does it power the disc?
thx

• UPGARDING PROBLEMS!!! NO CD Drive on a Power Book Fire Wire

First Of All Hello Everyone:
Here's my problem, a friend of mine ask me for help with he's power book Fire-wire the machine has (768 MB on RAM and 15 GB on HD),To upgrade his OS 9.2 to OS X, but (Here's the real problem) it has no cd or dvd drive, (Actually no cd drive at all), so i can't upgrade it to OSX. I Have tried with an external Iomega CD Drive (Predator Model) but it tells me it can't startup with an external cd drive, or simply doesn't recognize the external device when tried to startup the computer with the "C" key held down.
(It recognize the external cd when it's already stated up in OS 9.2)

Ikaro,
You cannot successfully drag-copy OSX like the 'Classic' OS.
If you could beg/borrow a FW CD-RW, you can boot the OSX CD and install via the burner.
Boot to the FW CD-RW in this manner: Load the OSX CD in the burner, then start up or restart while pressing the 'option' key, then select the OSX CD in the Startup Manager window.
Since you have a 10GB FW HD, you could connect it to another Mac (the host) that has FireWire ports and install OSX on the FW HD. The host should be able to start up to the new install on the FW HD so it can restart to the FW HD and finish up the install. If the host computer cannot boot to the FW HD, just let it restart to the internal HD, copy over CCC (see below), then properly unmount the FW HD. I believe you still should be able to boot the Pismo to the FW HD although I cannot be positive.
Now just connect the FW HD to your Powerbook (FireWire) a.k.a. Pismo, boot to the HD, and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone a bootable copy to the Pismo's internal HD.
You will first have to download Carbon Copy Cloner from VersionTracker and place it on the host's HD. After finishing installing OSX on the FW HD, drag-copy CCC onto the FW HD. When preparing to CCC to the Pismo's internal HD, make sure you select "make bootable" in CCC's preferences.

• Problems using FW-7344 with Fire Wire Video Cameras

Is it a bad idea to use the FW-7344 with other devices on the same fire wire bus?
We are trying to use an FW-7344 with a fire wire video camera but we tend to get packet errors that force a reset of the controller. We suspect that the problem is related with the camera and controller being on the same fire wire bus.
We instantly see problems when we connect two FW7344s and one video camera on the same fire wire card.

The NIMax program reads Packet Error. I can't recall the first error that our program reads, but I think it typically says something about not being able to communicate return values from the controller to the host computer.
This makes me think that the NI driver on the host does not retry after failing to get return data from the controller. This assumption may be valid with the PCI version, but probably is not with the FireWire version.
It only takes one camera for this problem to happen, but the problem is intermittent.

• Install Mac OS X from an External Fire WIre HD : PROBLEM!!!!

Hey guys, I have a MacBook and I wanted to re-install the Mac OS X software. My internal dvd drive doesn't seem to work anymore so I tried to install the OS on a partition of my fire wire drive, from my brother MacBook, no problem there. When I tried to boot my mac from the FireWire Drive, I wasn't able to install it to my computer. Now, the only way I can do anything is if I do it from the FW drive...
Is there anything I can do to solve to problem??

Were you able to boot your other computer from the FW drive? What did you put on the FW drive? Did you actually install OS X onto the FW drive?
If you installed OS X onto the FW drive and can boot the computer with it, then just clone it to your other computer. See the following:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal drive on the computer mounted in TDM.
Source means the external FW drive.
If you can connect both computers by FW, then you could actually clone the system from the working computer to the one with the bad optical drive using the above procedure. Destination would be the computer with the bad optical drive booted into TDM. Source is the good computer that you boot normally.

• HDX 18/dv8t IEEE 1394/Fire Wire performance problem in Win 7

The IEEE1394 interface lives on the PCI express bus at IRQ 16, which is shared by several other devices. Audio interfaces, such as the M-Audio Pro Fire and Fire Wire series do not work reliably with the shared IRQ. In Vista, by comparison, the IEEE 1394 interface has its own IRQ, and seems to run more reliably.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Well, I found a workaround for my issue. It's described in this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300836
By disabling the "Sandard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" in device manager, my iPod was correctly recognized and I was able to sync with iTunes. That's the good news.
The bad news is that: a) Windows warns me that my "device can operate faster if connected to a USB 2.0 port" - and the sync with iTunes runs slowly; b) if I reanable that USB device (as suggested in the Apple article, my iPod is no longer recognized.
For now, I'll just disable this device when I need to sync, then reenable it when done. But this is going to be a pain. I really don't consider this a fix. It's really annoying that the iPod is the only USB device that requires this kind of nonsense.
Looking forward to a "real" fix for this some time soon.

• Problem with fire wire

I am trying to use another Mac as an external hard drive.
My Mac is not turning on (it gets stuck at the grey screen) and wish to back up all my files to another Mac before I take my laptop into the apple store. I have bought a fire wire cable to connect to another Mac.
My Mac is displaying the fire wire symbol but my hard drive does not appear on the host Mac.
Any suggestions?

• IMac can't running any two fire wire hard disks at the same time . which

iMac can’t running any two fire wire hard disks at the same time . which two hard disks have extra power from power socket . If i just insert one of them .No problem . If connect two Hds at the same time. Leopard cant find it and the Hds seem no problem. the machine must be restarted and then use one . No problem . I have formated the HD many times .even if which format is Fat 32 or Mac issue persists .Boot from installation CD used the disk utility . Issue stills . If i used one fire wire HD that get power from power socket and used one fire wire device . Leopard was no problem during this time . Whether is this design problem or my machine hardware problem? My Mac has been changed the logic board by Apple service . Do you have similar case in here????

• Unable to mount external fire-wire hard drive - help, please!

After working the last couple of days to resolve the failure of an internal drive, now one of my external drives (LaCie fire-wire) will not mount. I was using it to back up the bad internal drive, and probably forgot to eject the drive before turning it off; don't know if this really makes any difference, but just in case...
If I use Disk Utility I can see the LaCie drive, but it will not mount.
When I tried to verify the drive got the following message -
Invalid sibling link
The volume LaCie HD needs to be repaired
1 HFS volume checked - volume needs repair
Next I tried to repair the drive, and was told -
Invalid sibling link
Volume check failed
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
This is where I stopped. I read another post somewhere in the forums about making a disk image of the drive, but I'm afraid of making things worse by proceeding without knowing what I'm doing. Any ideas on how I can somehow retrieve the data in the LaCie drive?
Once again, thanks in advance for any help!

Hi! Diskwarrior is always better at repairing drive directories which constitute 99% of all drive problems. I run it fairly regularly usually once a month. BUT I always run it at the first sign of weirdness or problems AND every time I have had a power failure or a forced restart or shutdown because those events usually always damage the drive's directory. Often even though the directory is damaged OSX can go ahead and mount it and it will work ok but eventually the damage builds every time one of those events occur and finally there is a failure to mount or boot. • HP Pavilion Elite m9040n Desktop and Fire Wire 1394

I have the above mentioned Desktop. It has a 1394 plugin on the front of case. Does the Pavilion come with all the software to make fire wire work? I backed up my hard drive onto an Toshiba external disk with a USB cable the other day and it took 6 hours. Isn't fire wire suppost to transfer data faster than a USB cable? Is there any special things I need to know when buying fire wire 1394.
I was looking on the internet the other day and they showed fire wire with 4 and 6 pins. Looking into the hole on my computer it only looks like 3 pins?
Thanks

Rick, welcome to the forum.
There is no software necessary for Firewire (IEEE 1394a).  The driver is installed with the OS.
Here is the Motherboard Specifictions page for the computer.  It only shows that there is a Firewire (IEEE 1394a) port (# 11) in the Back I/O ports.
Here is an article that shows the comparison of speed of Firewire vs USB.  Firewire was developed by Apple.
