Fire wire Test

Can anyone help tell me how to test my firewire connection.

Plug in a known good device and see how it works, I would think.

I have tried several times to test my fire wire port on this mac mini. I tnever does anything differently than boot up.
I am hooking up an audio interface and cant seem to get it to recognize the unit. I have tried testing the port, different cables and even purchased a 2nd interface thinking my original was the problem

Just for the record, I have friends that have the exact same setup as I do. It works flawlessly. They are using the same OS in both pro tools and apple. This seems to be a hardware connection issue. My Mac Mini does not recognize the M Box Pro audio interface I am using.
I have 2 m box pros doing the same thing. I have used 3 fire wire cables.
I first want to test the fire wire port on the mac mini, I need to know if it works at all. I tested it once and have not been able to conduct the test again. I believe this is some sort of internal set up issue. All of the software and hardware is identical to what several friends have.

    HI,
So you are getting video in to the App.
So any Firewire 400/800 issues are moot.
    Next step.
In the Video Menu is the Video option dark and active text and is it ticked ?
In the View Menu is Show Video Status ticked ?
This Menu  and the items from show Buddy Pics down rely on a Buddy list being "front"  (More on that in sec).
The first of these makes sure the camera is On and the second makes sure the Buddy Lists display the Video icons.
If there is not enough Internet Speed for Video Chats then the Video items may be ticked but greyed out.
To make sure you can see the Buddy Lists go to the Window Menu.
If you have set up iMessages and nothing else except Enable the Bonjour account then the Buddies item will dispaly the Bonjour list.
If you have AIM, Jabber or Yahoo IDs set up as well then the Buddies item is a combined list.
You can unlink them in the General section of the Preferences.
The Window Menu will change to list the Buddy Lists by the Description Fields in the Accounts section
An AIM Buddy list for example should display green Video icons next to the Buddies.
In this my other logged in AIM valid Names show up under Family and an Apple Test accounts shows in Auto Responders  (you can't Video with yourself but you an add the Buddy name to a Buddy list).
Only Jabber Buddy list will do this as well as the Yahoo option is Text only.
However it does have to be AIM to AIM or Jabber to Jabber.
AIM in this sense includes the Apple Issued IDs with the ending of @mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com
Jabber ones can include GoogleTalk and Facebook IDs if you have Enabled Talk at Google or Chat at Facebook.
Sticking with the AIM case you would then click on the green video icon as one method of Starting a Video Chat.
As it is an AIM Buddy list the Buddy should be an AIM vlaid Buddy.
    Note
Apple IDs obviously have an @ in them and in most cases are valid emails (or have been in the past)
They are valid with the AIM service
GoogleMail IDs are then valid Jabber IDs once you enable Talk in Products at Google.  Facebook also uses the users email Address.
The can means that fro both services an email address is the valid ID.
Other Jabber IDs may not be email but do follow the [email protected] format.
This means it is possible to add the IDs or Screen Names from one service to the Buddy list of another.
The Buddy will appear Off line  in these case but you will not be told they are not a valid Buddy.
If the chat fails at this point you normally get some sort of alert message.
It may even have  pop up that can be expanded for more details.
You may see more in the Video Menu > Connection Doctor > Errors tab
If you have an AIM Buddy list then try adding the Apple Test Accounts.  See table 1
There used to be 6 (three plain AIM names and three @mac.com versions).
It tends to be that only 1 or 2 are On at any one time now.
Can you connect to this "Buddy" ?

  • Import (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (  many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.

Attempted to import 6.5 GB of (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (plus many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.  I read a previous response to a similar question -- to copy the pictures library to the new computer.  How best to do that?

There's actually an option to iPhoto Library Manager that makes this all almost work flawlessly (and work well enough for me). With the exception of Photo Albums that the pictures are part of, if you select "Library > Rebuild Library..." and then select "Scavange Orphaned Photos" check box, then it will put all the Photos and Movies into the "Scavanged Photos" album. It matches the modified pictures to their originals. It preserves all the event names and photo groupings. All the meta-data I could spot check it got right (although with 44k pictures, I only checked a few). If you fail to select this option, however, it will find no pictures at all when it goes to rebuild the library (this was true of the small test libraries I tried as well as the big, monster 280GB library I just finished converting). The conversion process took 5 hours to run, but in the end produced a library my new iPhoto can read and that I can interact with. I'll be suggesting to the iPhoto Library Manager folks a notation that would estimate the number of Orphaned Photos and display that number as a hint to the user that the option would be useful.
Edited: Thanks to Old Toad and LarryHN for their help in finding which of the many options to transition this library to 9.5.1 I needed to use. Sorry if I took my frustration of the past several months out on you guys for generously trying to help me.

  • New Drobo with fire wire

My Imac 24 3.06 seems to take longer booting up since installing the fire wire drobo with two 1.5TB drives

If you have OS X installed on an external drive it's possible your system is starting from it instead of your internal drive. You can check by going to System Prefrences and clicking on Startup disk, choose the internal drive and exit system prefrences. Then do a restart to test.

  • Fire wire ports do not work

Here's a little history with the problem I'm having. At first (about 1 year ago) my fire wire ports became intermittent. They would work one second, then they wouldn't. I took my Mac in to be serviced, at the time it was still under warranty, but the techs couldn't find anything wrong. I brought it home but still had the problem. I figured maybe my components were bad. 1 year later I'm still having the problem. So I took it back, to the same people, this time they dug a little deeper with their tests and found that my logic board was bad. Everything else on the computer seems to work great, just not either fire wire port.
    The questions I have are:
    1) has anyone encountered this problem?
    2) when looking at the logic board which number is used for the part
number? Mine says 820-1592-A, also 630-6483 is listed just under the
bar code. I'm trying to locate another, so far unsuccessfully.
    3) do you think Apple would honor the warranty since Authorized techs
didn't find the problem the first time when my MAC was under warranty?
Any info will be helpful. Thanks

I had an issue with my FireWire ports not working right before my logic board died. I was able to resurrect the FW situation by unplugging everything from the back of the G5 (including the power cord) and letting it sit for 15 minutes. This caused a reset and then FW started working again -- alas for nothing when the logic board croaked a few weeks later.
By all means contact Apple -- since you did have it checked under warranty they might be able to work with you. You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. My repair put me back $900 + (I did not have an AppleCare extended warranty, since I have never had any of my previous Macs fail before).

  • Fire wire truble

I have an External Isight attached to a 2ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (1gb Ram) running 10.5.3
The Isight has worked on my old G5 and this very mac before, but for some reason the camera has stopped working (little green light comes on, then clicks off) I have no other fire wire device to test, but fear the sole fire wire port on the mini is busted… how do I test to see if the hardware is screwed up?

  • Fire-wire output port

When I out-put my video it does not work, the image is there but it's behind several boxes, it looks like the output on the fire-wire port is damaged. I tried using different decks, and camera's as well as changing the editing package, everytime I output it is corrupted. What should I do?

What are you using to output? Is the software compatable with Intel Macs? Have you tried unplugging any fire devices and unplugging your Mac for about 5 minutes resetting your iMac? I doubt it's the problem but worth the check. Use your original install disk and hold the "D" key down and it will open the Apple hardware test. It won't work if you have anything but the Apple branded keyboard and mouse plugged in. Good luck!

  • No power from Fire Wire port to my audio interface

I face this problem after my set-up always has worked: I have a Quata Fire 610 Audio interface, powered thru my Fire wire 400. For some reason there is no power, and my Mac does not recognize the unit. I have tried both Fire Wire ports, and none of them works. The unit works fine on my other Mac (iMac G4) Is there any way I solve this problem. I have done the the disc utilities.
    Peter

FireWire ports have been known to fail.
Did you shut down (power OFF) the Power Mac G5, and restart? Did you also try the port on the front panel? Did you try a different FireWire cable? Is it possible to try another FireWire device on the ports, as a test?
You can also try a reset of the PMU or SMU (power management). Depending on your model

  • One Fire Wire Port, What Do I Do?

I only have one fire wire port on my MacBook. I use that for the external hard drive/scratch disc when working in FCE. How can I capture video from my camera and then transfer to the scratch disc manually? The better question may be can this be done?

I don't know whether these 2 heretical comments will be of any use but here goes.
    1. Whilst I generally use FireWire Hard Drives, I have never experienced any problems whatsoever, capturing or editing on USB 2.0 HDs (I have 3).
    2. A few weeks ago I discovered to my surprise that I had been capturing DV and HDV from 3 different cameras (2 Panasonics and a Canon) through a cheap Belkin FW hub onto FCE 4 and FCP 6 for the last 18 months. I had wired it in to test whether it would work and then completely forgot about it.
However, although these things have worked perfectly on 2 computers and with 3 cameras etc. for me, I cannot guarantee they will work for everyone.

  • Fire wire 800 not working on IMAC

My Fire wire port on my IMAC 24 inch is not working now.  I have tried switching cables, etc.  This started when I had to have the hard drive replaced.  The drives do work if connected by USB or FW 400.
    John

Have you reset your SMC and PRAM?  If that doesn't get your FW800 port going, run the Apple Hardware Test to see if it spots any hardware problem.

  • Fire wire external disk fails to mount

    Hello,
I've been trying to work out how to access my LaCie external disk on my macosx 10.4.6.
At first it worked well on both servers. After a while, the mounted icon simply disappeared. Try as I may, neither server mounts my external LaCie or any USB device for that matter.
I reinstalled OSX on one of them and when i connect it now it is correctly mounted, including usb device.
But on the other identical server on which i did not reinstall OSX it still doesn't mount.
Nevertheless, in the system information panel, fire wire, there is a line stating "la cie external drive" blah blah, but without specifiyng size and the disk is not accessible, no icon on the desktop and so on.
I tried shutting off for 20 min, with every cable unpluged, I tried updating but still it does not mount.
if any of you had this problem and would like to share with me the solution it would be really great !
    thanks in advance

These are the most common reasons for one computer to work with an external drive while another does not (assuming the cable is the same), all of which are covered in my FAQ mentioned earlier, which perhaps I should outline like this:
    1. The PRAM needs zapping. Note, if a machine is 3 or more years old, PRAM zapping should only be attempted after verifying that the clock battery is fully charged at 3.6 V.
    2. The firewire ports need resetting.
    3. Dust in the firewire ports.
    4. Installed firmware on the Firewire bridge of the hard drive is not fully compatible with the operating system. Check the manufacturer's support line (in this case e-mail firewire AT lacie.com) for updated firmware.
    5. The operating system's Firewire drivers are not properly installed. This may happen if you used system specific disks for another Mac to install the operating system, or the directory is damaged, or the preferences for the firewire are not working.
I would test in that order.

  • Camera not regonized through fire wire

I've used both iMovie and iDVD hundreds of times with no problem... today, however... i keep getting a message telling me to connect the camera with a fire wire (as if i haven't already) I've tried re-booting the computer and turning the camera off and back on. side note... a friend of mine complained about the same problem a few weeks ago so i let him use my camera... he couldn't get it to work on his computer and now that i've got my camera back... i can't get it to work on mine.
    help please.

    Hi
Sue is a friendly soul and right in 99 of 100. (Hi Sue )
But if disaster! I seem to be one that fears the worst first to be relived if it is
    proven wrong.
Did Your friend get his/hers camera to work or was it harmed. If harmed Your
    Camera might be so to.
    Why ?
Because if one inserts the 6-pin end of the FW connector up-side down in the
back of the Mac it will blow the A/D chip in any Camera connected to the other
    end.
If the other Camera works with any other Mac + iMovie = it is OK and most
    probably Yours to.
Howto figure out if Your Camera is OK.
    If faulty it will still:
    - record normally
    - play back on LCD screen and on TV-set (analog-connector)
    - in iMovie You can control forward and backward BUT JUST A BLUE SCREEN
only when addressing the FW-port it will not work.
BUT there are several other - less lethal problems that can give this situation
I would go to a Mac store or reliable friend and test if it works OK there. May be
    with a new FW-cable.
Please keep us informed on Your progress.
    Yours Bengt W

  • New 27" has only 1 800 Fire Wire

I am considering buying a new iMac 27". I see that it has only 1, 800 Fire Wire port and no 400 FW port. I use my computer for editing video via FCS3. One of the cameras I have is a Canon XHA1 it's output is Fire Wire 400. I import footage to a external drive which is a Lacie 1.5 tb with a 400-800 Fire Wire port.
Is the connector and cord for 400 & 800 Fire Wire the same or are they physically different?
What is the best way for me to solve this problem? The best work flow? Could I capture from the camera 400 FW into the iMac 800 FW port and then transfer the data to the Lacie?
Of the new iMac 27" models how much faster would the Quad i5 or i7 be over the duo 3.06 model? Let's assume that we were transcoding a 1 gb project? My current computer has a duo 2.16 how would it compare? Is it correct to assume that because 3.06 is almost 50% more than 2.16 that there would be a 50% increase in speed or in other words the 3.06 would do the job in half the time?
    Thanks
    Kent

Having a FW 800 port is no problem, the port will also support FW 400 so connecting to your camera is no issue. The cable connectors are physically different however you should only need an adapter like this
As far as your work flow that's up to you, you can daisy chain your Lacie to the Canon so the iMac will see both devices. That means when you want to import video you can have it go directly from the camera to the Lacie HD if you want.
As far as how much faster the Quad core machines will be is anyones guess at this point because they haven't begun shipping so bench tests have been done. As you probably know they're expected to ship sometime this month, I'm sure that soon after they ship different bench tests will be done and then your can get some real data. When will that be, my guess is within within several weeks of their ship date. Until then everything is speculation and people quoting numbers are guessing, it's just that simple.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Roger
