  • MBP firewire port bus issue?

i've got an 2.16 dual intel 17" MBP. running 10.4.8. i'm using Final Cut Pro 5.1.1. I've been running my media off a maxtor 500gb external connected via the 800 port. i've got two 250gb externals daisy-chained and connected to the 400 for my sfx. i've had my mini-dv camera attached via a 4-6 pin to the 400 port on the back of the maxtor media drive for digitizing. i recently did a couple updates (security something or others) via the software update panel on the mac. i went to capture some footage i needed off a tape the other day and upon connecting my camera, all the drives unmounted and i was greeted by the device removed error pop-up. i've tried new cable, i tried unplugging all but the one maxtor drive, i tried just having that drive plugged into the 800 and the camera into the 400 port of the computer. i've tried a new camera.....no avail in any case. if i have the camera plugged in, i've got no external drives on line.
did any of my software updates
potentially screw up bus assignment?? i'm frustrated. please help.

I am a little behind on the technical speak but I recently upgraded to a 2.16 dual intel 17 MBP and have been having problems with Firewire connectivity; I had a simple set up; External 160GB drive connects ok via FW 4OO port but when i connect my DV camera via Firefire 800 port (9pin to 4pin) the mac doesn't see my camera - if i go back to capturing video to internal hard drive and using FW 400 port to connect to DV all is ok - Is it in simple language the case that the MBP can't support both FW connections without upgrading some FW express card? If that's the case two of those dudes in tee shirts in the apple store london have been telling porkies? Any help here?

  • Firewire 800 & 400 ports

    HI,
I have an iMac 24" which has two Firewire ports in the rear (and 800 & a 400).
I have an external LaCie 250gb drive connected to the 400 port. I also have a Panasonic miniDV camera which successfully connects via this port, however at the expense of unplugging the LaCie.
I wish to use both at the smae time via FCE.
Wikipedia seems to suggest that the 800 format is backwards compatible with 400.
So my question is, will my LaCie drive & Panasonic camcorder operate through the 800 port using the correct cable (assuming these come with the 4 pin end for the camcorder).
    Thanks

    Hi Eric,
    Ian is correct.
    I have a MBP w/1 FW 400 port and 1 FW 800 port, and I use a 400->800 converter.
I think the converter was my first purchase after I got the MBP. I couldn't find info at the time if there was any advantage to use the camera or HD with either port, so I figured a converter would give me max flexibility to check it out for myself.
My experience now is that it doesn't make any difference. That matches what I've read that if two or more FW devices plugged into the Mac, the data flows at the speed of the slowest device; it doesn't make any difference which port it's connected to.
To do it again, I would just buy a cable with the 800 plug on one end, and a 400 plug (either 4-pin or 6-pin) on the other end. Reason is the converter is just one more thing to keep track of, and, because it's about 1.5 inches long, I think it puts a bit more strain on the Mac's 800 port.

  • FireWire 400 port to 800 Port?

Trying to migrate data from iBook PowerBook whic has FireWire 400 port to iMac which has FireWire 800 port. My existing FireWire cable does not fit the iMac port. There must be a solution.

Just get a FW800 to FW400 cable or adapter. They are fairly common. They give you a 9-pin to 6-pin change.
Here is an example of a cable...

Here is an example of an adapter...
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html
With the adapter you just plug your normal FW400-to-FW400 cable into the back of it.

  • Connect FireWire 800 device to FireWire 400 port?

    Hello all,
does anyone know whether it is possible to connect a firewire 800 device (e.g. external Hard Disk) to a firewire 400 port on a e.g. MacBook?
I know only that it works for sure via special fw cable the other way round – FireWire 400 device to FW 800 port.
    Cheers,
    Gillion

    Hi Gillion!
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
My understanding is that with the appropriate cable you can connect a FireWire 800 to a FireWire 400 device and vice-versa.
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=4B8 F4B38&nplm=TP320LL/A
The machines will throttle the transfer speed down to an acceptable range for the slower (FW 400) device to communicate effectively.

  • Food smashed into MBP USB/Power ports? help!

I had my macbook pro in my backpack and sadly did not have it in a sleeve or anything of the like. There just happened to be a bananna in the backpack as well which somehow mashed it's way into the USB ports and power connector :/ Now they don't work and was hoping someone could give a word of advice on how to best clean it all up. Yes I know it was a dumb move and am only looking for advice on fixing not to be reprimanded for what has happened ;-)
    Thanks for any help!

    Hello,
    You have two options:
    1) DIY repair: http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro
    2) Bring your machine into an Apple Store or authorized repair center for diagnosis and servicing.
Accidental damage is not covered under extended warranty. I would recommend the latter, especially in a case where the 1) extent of damage cannot be assessed and all affected components isolated, as well as 2) The general difficulty of DIY repairs on Retina MBPs. Sorry for the mishap and best of luck.

“Which Firewire cable should I purchase to connect a late 2006 Intel-based iMac with a 400 port to a Mid 2010 IMac with an 800 port?”

To connect both iMacs, you need a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter, and a FireWire 400 cable, so you will be able to connect both Macs

  • Rear Firewire 800 and 400 Ports

I'm having an issue getting a new Maxtor HD to be recognized by my G5. The front FW 400 port works fine, but I can't get the two rear ports to recognize the unit.
I've tried the shutdown and power plug pull technique but that didn't work.
    Any other ideas?
Or does this box have to go in for repairs?
    ??? Thanks

"Seems like the FireWire issue needs to be revisited quite often. Here is my often repeated suggestion which appears to clear up many FireWire issues: reset the FireWire ports. Panther has a Finder Preference to show mounted volumes on the Desktop. You must set this for mounted drives to be visible. Please follow these instructions to reset your FireWire port.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
    Here is a summary:
    * shut down and disconnect all external drives and peripherals ; make sure nothing is connected to the FireWire ports
    * use Apple Disk Utility to repair permissions on your internal boot drive
    * shut down and disconnect the AC power from the computer as well as the drives; if laptop, also remove battery
    * let sit unpowered and unconnected for 15 minutes
    * reconnect AC power to only the computer (battery too if laptop)
    * restart computer
    * verify that FireWire ports are visible within Apple System Profiler
    * reconnect FireWire drive (only one); refresh window within Apple System Profiler to rescan the FireWire bus; confirm that drive is visible
    * confirm drive is OK by using Apple Disk Utility and apply First Aid
    * repeat for other drives, one at a time "

  • Firewire 400 port: connector not staying seated

    Hi!
I am using a firewire audio device, and when I use the firewire 400 port on my MBP, I constantly have to reseat the firewire cable, as the connector keeps sliding out at the slightest movement of the cable. I then have to relaunch the audio app, which is not fun to do several times every 15 minutes or so. OK, it isn't fun to have ot do even once...
I was using a USB audio device, and those ports are solid. Is the firewire 400 port this way for all 400 ports? Is it just my MacBook Pro? Are there cables that seem to "grab" the port better than others?
    thx!

    Hi!
Got a great cable... tried in my Mac Pro as well. If I grab the cable just before the connector going into the port, and wiggle up and down very lightly, it takes 2-4 wiggles and falls out of the MacBook Pro, but the Mac Pro is solid as a rock. I have 4 other firewire devices, and they are solid with this cable, as well as with 3 other cables I have tried (less expensive ones).
So, now I am wondering- before running to an Apple store to check- are the last generation MacBook and MacBook pro laptop firewire 400 ports different? And are they simply all going to give me this "wiggle wiggle fall out" behaviour"?

  • Noise through Speakers when using Firewire 400 port.

Can anyone explain to me why my G4 Powerbook would make squealing noises when I have anything plugged into the Firewire 400 port? It is driving my crazy!!

I'm afraid I can't help, except to say I have the same problem with my FW 400 and 800 ports when I connect a Firewire hard drive. The noise sounds like it's coming from inside the computer itself and it happens even with the audio muted. I wonder if this problem might be related to the Firewire "noise" / "chirp" issue I've seen discussed?

  • Aggregate device on the same firewire bus (fireface 800 and Lightbridge

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up a aggregate device with my old RME Fireface 800 (on the firewire 400 bus) and this new M-Audio Lightbridge. But allthough I manage to create the device, there is no sound at all. The Fireface acts as digital master via a word clock cable. The Fireface are connected via a 10 m. cable to the rear connection (on my nes Mac Pro) and the Lightbridge are connected to the front. I know it's the same bus using those two connectors, so do you think a separate firewire board would be a solution?
    Regards Stig

So the firewire "bus" and a firewire "interface" are the same thing then? Excuse my ignorance, I've just been put in the position that I needed to know this for the first time with this audio interface problem. The things I used my firewire ports for just worked without me having to learn much about it up until now. Also, I found some posts that the card had some issues functioning in a version of Leopard. I'm about to upgrade from Tiger (finally) directly to Snow Leopard. Do you (or anyone else who sees this) happen to know if there are any issues there? I appreciate the help very much Rod.

  • FireWire 800 versus FireWire 400 for HDV Import

    Hi,
I have a Canon HV20 camcorder. I just got a new previous generation MBP which has both FireWire 800 and 400 on it. Will I see any improvements during film capture if I connect my camcorder to the FireWire 800 port instead of the FireWire 400 port?
    Thanks in advance.
    Dave

No. HDV has the same data rate as standard DV (25Mbps) so you can use either a Firewire 400 or 800 port fine.

I also have a FireWire PCI card, which looks like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815150103 though I can't be for certain that is that one (PCI card purchased by my business partner 4 years ago and was originally in a PC). It's got 3-ports (2x 800 and 1x 400).
    2) Second Question - am I ok to install this FireWire PCI card into the G5?
(how do I identify for sure what make of PCI card it is?)
If so, which slot and how should I go about doing it?
    Thank you

Hi sohopigeon, and a warm welcome to the forums!
What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device...
If the issue persists, try these steps:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).
    3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.
    4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
    5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.
