Firefox 12 Won't Process Microsoft Update Internet Shortcut !

Firefox 3.6.x would load Microsoft Update website in IETab automatically when I clicked on the Microsoft Update desktop shortcut. Since upgrading to Firefox 12.0 the shortcut no longer works. It now just launches a new blank tab with "Go to a website" in the location bar. How can I get it to open Microsoft Update site in IE Tab Plus 2.0 again???
I have Win XP SP3 with IE8 and now Firefox 12.0 as default browser.

Does the site load via the location bar in Firefox?

    Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
    You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
    Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />

    Also make sure that the firewall isn't blocking Firefox if you've used system restore.
    Note that using System Restore can cause your Firefox installation to get corrupted because not all files are restored (only files in a white-list), so be cautious with using System Restore.<br />
    You may need to (re)install software that was affected.<br />
    Delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling to be sure that all files get updated.

  • Poor Firefox performance after applying recent Microsoft Updates (Win 7 x64); any solutions?

    Recently I updated to Firefox 27 and noticed really horrible performance (Task Manager shows FF pegging one core, frequent "Firefox is not responding messages", even lagging keystrokes in the URL bar). This is on an Ideapad s205 (AMD E450 APU, Win 7 x64, 8GB RAM, SSD) that has always had pretty decent web browsing performance for a low-end machine.
    Initially I blamed FF because the poor performance coincided with the update to version 27, but now I believe the root cause to be a recent Microsoft update. The reason for that is that my wife has a laptop with an even lower-end APU (C60 APU, 5400rpm hard drive, 4GB RAM, Win 7 x64), and she was getting much better performance with FF27 until I applied a backlog of some 90+ updates. Now she's suffering from the same poor performance I am and she's pretty p*ssed at me.
    Interestingly, I have two WIn 7 x64 Intel desktops that also have FF 27 and are fully patched, and the performance is just fine. Perhaps this problem is specific to AMD APUs.
    Any thoughts? I've tried turning off the Azure backend per some comments in this forum, but that made little or no difference.
    Thanks!

    Hi guigs2, I'm not sure what to expect for cache values. Mine are:
    * browser.cache.disk.capacity;256000 (default)
    * browser.cache.disk.smart_size.enabled;true (default)
    * browser.cache.disk.smart_size_cached_value;358400 ("user set" but I think this was computed automatically)

  • Ever since I updated to Firefox 7.1, my computer won't go to the internet when I double-click the Mozillz Firefox icon, like it normally does; I have to restart my computer to be able to access the internet. Why?

    Ever since I updated to Firefox 7.1, my computer won't go to the internet when I double-click the Mozilla Firefox icon, like it normally does; I have to restart my computer to be able to access the internet. Why?

    There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page to log you in automatically.<br />
    The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.<br />
    If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you anymore and you need to sign in once again.<br />
    <br />
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Cookies
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Password_Manager
    So make sure that you keep the cookies from those sites via an allow exception and that you do not clear the cookies or site preferences via "Clear Recent History".

  • A process named "update.exe *32" and description is "Firefox" keeps using a lot of memory and cpu; the longer forefox is on, the worse it gets. How to prevent?

    using Windows 7, firefox 15.0.1
    This process uses more and more memory and CPU, sometimes there are several of these processes running. If I kill these processes, it doesn't seem to affect the utilization of Firefox. Then the process slowly starts to use more and more memory and CPU all over again.
    This happens all the time, every time I use Firefox.

    I do not have a ComObjects folder under C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files. That is not part of Firefox.
    wscript.exe is a utility included with Windows to run scripts at the system level. It generally is not used by major programs. If update.exe is starting up with Windows, you may be able to find the script that wscript.exe is running using [http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx Autoruns].
    It definitely sounds viral. I suggest deleting the update.exe file, although Windows might prevent you from doing that until you kill all related processes. And if you have a persistent infection, the file may be restored or re-downloaded.
    It might be easiest to seek assistance from a forum more dedicated to malware cleanups such as the following:

    Hope you get it removed.

  • Firefox 37 keeps crashing, Plugin-hang...aplication error message, & won't let me update Adobe Flash player

    Ever since I updated to Firefox 37 my Firefox has been crashing. It started only doing it periodically, then it got so that if I scrolled down a page it would close. Then it got to the point where as soon as I opened Firefox it would immediately crash every time. I ran antivirus and Super AntiSpyware and rebooted, but it only let me into Firefox, nothing would load up. They only way I am able to be on right now is through my computer's "safe mode".
    I have tried repeatedly to update Adobe Shockwave Flash Player, but when I click "run" the box disappears and nothing happens from there. It just won't update.
    I am on a Windows XP computer which, as we know, is no longer supported by Microsoft, but am I really this SOL?
    All scans say I am clean, BTW.
    I am afraid to reset Firefox because if I can't update the flash player now, who can promise me I will be able to get anything back if I reset Firefox?
    I am moments away from getting my hammer and having a meeting with my computer in the backyard, if you know what I mean. Please help.

    Thank you so much for responding. I appreciate your help very much. There are TONS of these reports without "BP" in front of them. Most all reports are without a "BP" in front of them. They take forever to load from Archives and once I do get one loaded I can't locate a "submit" tab anywhere.

  • Are you aware of: The assault on our users continues. It might be worth the squeeze to alert your Firefox users to this scam. Brian Fake Anti-Virus Poses As Microsoft Update Jayesh Limaye, Jun 10, 2011 1656 hrs IST

    It can be seen of late, that fake anti-virus attacks have become more professional, and can actually convince more innocent people than ever before, to fall into this trap. In this case, a huge amount of attention has been paid to copy the graphics and website elements of the original site to fool people into believing that the bogus site is in fact, the original. They have also taken advantage of the timing of the monthly update patch released by Microsoft, known as Patch Tuesday, to get more users into installing this malicious software.
    Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos, said, "Users need to be more vigilant than ever before as bogus security alerts pop-up in their browsers. Fake anti-virus attacks are big business for cybercriminals and they are investing time and effort into making them as convincing as possible. Malicious hackers are using smart social engineering tricks more and more often, and the risk is that users will be scared by a phony warning into handing over money to fix problems that never existed in the first place".
    The next time you see Microsoft update notification while using Firefox, steer clear of this wolf in sheep's clothing.

    You are welcome. I'm glad you got it back up.
    (1) You say you did the symbolic link. I will assume this is set correctly; it's very important that it is.
    (2) I don't know what you mean by "Been feeding the [email protected] for several weeks now, 700 emails each day at least." After the initial training period, SpamAssassin doesn't learn from mail it has already processed correctly. At this point, you only need to teach SpamAssassin when it is wrong. [email protected] should only be getting spam that is being passed as clean. Likewise, [email protected] should only be getting legitimate mail that is being flagged as junk. You are redirecting mail to both [email protected] and [email protected] ... right? SpamAssassin needs both.
    (3) Next, as I said before, you need to implement those "Frontline spam defense for Mac OS X Server." Once you have that done and issue "postfix reload" you can look at your SMTP log in Server Admin and watch as Postfix blocks one piece of junk mail after another. It's kind of cool.
    (4) Add some SARE rules:
    Visit http://www.rulesemporium.com/rules.htm and download the following rules:
    70sareadult.cf
    70saregenlsubj0.cf
    70sareheader0.cf
    70sarehtml0.cf
    70sareobfu0.cf
    70sareoem.cf
    70sarespoof.cf
    70sarestocks.cf
    70sareunsub.cf
    72sare_redirectpost
    Visit http://www.rulesemporium.com/other-rules.htm and download the following rules:
    backhair.cf
    bogus-virus-warnings.cf
    chickenpox.cf
    weeds.cf
    Copy these rules to /etc/mail/spamassassin/
    Then stop and restart mail services.
    There are other things you can do, and you'll find differing opinions about such things. In general, I think implementing the "Frontline spam defense for Mac OS X Server" and adding the SARE rules will help a lot. Good luck!

  • I want to load Firefox on my computer at home, which is not connected to the internet. I want to download Firefox to my flashdrive and then add it to my computer at home. When I try to download Firefox, it won't let me change the path of where it download

    I want to download Firefox on a flashdrive so I can then download it to my home computer which is not connected to the internet. When I download Firefox, it won't let me change the path and so tries to download on a public computer, which isn't allowed. The reason I want it on my home computer is because I'm creating web pages and I want to view my html pages using a variety of browsers, including Firefox.

    From another computer, go to http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/, click "Free download" button, click "Save File" button, select your flash drive in "Save as" window. "Firefox Setup 3.6.13.exe" file will be saved in your flash drive.
    You just need to insert it in your new computer and double-click on "Firefox Setup 3.6.13.exe" from Windows Explorer and follow instructions.

    ince updating my firefox browser whenever i click on an internet link in an email it does not open on firefox athough my mac switches to the firefox window as i have this set to be my default browser- what should i do?

    I have the same problem, and I also wondered if Google toolbar has anything to do with it. There GMAIL was set as the default mail application at first. I have removed that setting, but Firefox 4.0.1 continues to use GMAIL instead of Outlook which is my selection for mailto handling.

  • Firefox is hanging after trying to update Adobe Flash. I can't fix it as long as Firefox is open, but I'm unable to close it-menu bar won't even appear.

    In the process of updating Adobe Flash, Firefox froze. It registers as being open, and none of the fixes I've tried will work as long as it's open, but I can't close it. Even when I click on the Firefox icon, the Firefox menu bar doesn't appear. No Firefox window appears.

    Good advice - I'll keep that in mind. Thanks

  • Several times a month, when I go to open Firefox, it says "wait installing new updates". After they are installed, Firefox won't open, it says "page not found." I have to then reload Firefox. How can I stop these updates?

    Before Firefox open the little window opens saying"wait installing new updates." Then after when opening Firefox, my home page says "can't find this page. I have plugged in the address: http://www.google.com/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official and it Firefox still won't open. I have to run the Firefox setup 3.6.3 on my desktop, to get Firefox to open on my home page. I would like to stop these automatic Updates from running; how?

    Unfortunately I tried that and it didn't work. Thanks for the help though. I tried to uninstall and it said I couldn't because the file is corrupt or something, but I think I finally got it uninstalled and/or deleted or whatever, but now I try to reinstall/download it again from the beginning and I can't. No matter what I do I can not get Firefox working again. No matter how many times I try to redownload it. Any other suggestions?
