Firefox 17 crashing on startup

Since updating to Firefox 17, the browser seems to hang a second or two after it starts up and will not respond to anything. I've tried reinstalling it but the problem persists. What can I do to fix this?

I'll take this a step further.
1. I have this problem and then some.
2. Started last night (11.22.12).
3. FF froze (not responding...)
4. Killed with task manager.
5. Restart FF and it freezes loading home page.
6. After many attempts, uninstalled FF through Windows, rebooted and reinstalled. Same outcome--freeze on start up.
7. Uninstalled using Windows and manually trashed everything in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox (keeping my profile and bookmarks in C:\Users\Pop-G\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla in place). Rebooted. Reinstalled. Same outcome, freeze on start up.
8. Trashed *everything* related to FF. Deleted all traces including registry. Rebooted. Reinstalled FF and using sync, loaded bookmarks. Did NOT load any extension or add-on. Same result...freeze on start up.
9. Neither Chrome or IE exhibiting this behavior.
10. FF is my favorite browser....but having to use Chrome now.
- Using Profile manager won't work as the program freezes before profile manager can be be accessed. Regardless, I trashed the profile and had FF create a new one when I reinstalled. Didn't help.
-Plugins aren't the issue as I didn't load any after I did a complete, system-wide wipe of FF.
-Safe mode. Didn't work. A couple of times in this process the start up in safe mode window popped up. If I chose 'start in safe mode' FF would still freeze. If I chose the 'reset' option, nothing would happen. Frozen solid. Again, extensions are not the issue (unless it's one that ships with FF. There were no third party extensions loaded and the program still froze...solid).

Firefox repeatedly crashes on startup or just after opening a new page, I've tried downgrading my browser to FF 18 & the problem still occurs. Firefox won't even run properly in safe mode. I have included the latest crash report: bp-d8715a6c-6208-4420-8df4-cae752130307

Hi Spirax, if your new profile works after a restart or two, you may want to start back up in your old profile and use the Reset feature. This is a lot easier than manually copying data to your new profile, although that is another option.

  • Firefox consistently crashes at startup

Firefox is consistently crashing at startup even in safe mode. Only Firefox is giving me problems, Internet Explorer and other programs works fine.
One of these two things usually happen:
The first is that it will slow the computer to a crawl and then Werfault will close the program. This usually happens when I first try Firefox after booting. Under Event Viewer it generates the following two Application errors:
Event 1000 - Faulting application firefox.exe, version 11.0.0.4454, time stamp 0x4f5ecc44, faulting module MSVCR80.dll, version 8.0.50727.6195, time stamp 0x4dcddbf3, exception code 0xc0000006, fault offset 0x0003a7f7, process id 0x1674, application start time 0x01cd092f8d05a15e.

Windows closed the program Firefox because of this error.

Oddly enough, if I screw with it long enough it may start to work and when it does it will start up and work fine from then on until I shut down my PC. Once it's boot up again, the consistent crashing returns.
I've searched Google and have tried everything to no avail. I've done clean installs of Firefox, system restore, chkdsk for both system files and bad blocks, registry cleaner, uninstalling all versions of Visual Runtime C++, full scan for malware/virus, etc. and nothing has worked. Help please.

That can be a problem with accessing the secmod.db file in the profile folder.
Rename secmod.db (secmod.db.old) in the Firefox Profile Folder in case there is a problem with the file.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Firefox 7 crashes (on startup) when running on Win7 as standard user.

Upgraded from 6.02 to 7.0 (automatically) on Win7. Running as standard user, FF 7 crashes on startup. Running with admin rights, FF starts up ok. Was running 6.02 as standard user with no issues. Disabled all plug-ins, and same result. Submitted this without the crash ID as well, but now have figured out how to supply it. Cannot see how to startup FF on win7 in 'safe' mode. Shift key during launch doesn't work. No menu items for 'start ff in safe mode.

Here's a workaround for users using Oracle ESSO version 11.1.1.5.0 on win7. The workaround removes the startup of the v-GO helper object for mozilla.
Note that this also means no SSO support for FireFox.
1st - on installation of ESSO - try turning off the Mozilla helper (custom install).
A registry fix will also work
(Try at your own risk and backup before editing the registry.) YMMV for this workaround and other versions/flavors of SSO/Tivoli/v-GO and Windows.
    Key is
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Passlogix\Extensions\AccessManager\StartupApps]
    Remove the line starting "MozHOPath"
    Restart v-GO SSO or reboot

  • Sync plugin causes firefox to crash on startup.

After I install the sync plugin, firefox crashes on startup. Firefox will work in safe-mode. Furthermore firefox will run once in normal mode after being in safe-mode, but then revert back to crashing until the next safe-mode execution.
I have 4 computers running firefox w/ sync and only one of them displays this problem.

I have uninstalled and then installed the sync plugin.
I have uninstalled and the installed firefox.
I have run firefox -profile-manager and created a new profile.
Thank you for the info regarding the .so and and log file.
When firefox crashes nothing is appended to the log file. So I started looking at the access times on WeaveCrypto.so. When firefox successfully starts in normal mode, the access time on the .so in the x86_64 directory is set. However, when firefox crashes the access time does not get set (ie. WeaveCrypto.so is never accessed.)
I am still confident that this has something to do the extension Firefox Sync 1.5.1 since if it is uninstalled or disabled everything works perfectly. On a side note, this problem is not new to this computer it has occurred with all versions of the extension starting at (I think) 1.3.
It does not appear to be an extension conflict. The crashes still occur if I disable every extension except Firefox Sync.

  • Firefox 24 crashes upon startup

We have several workstation in our environment that Firefox is crashing on when trying to start it. This happened after upgrading them from Firefox 23 to Firefox 24. Uninstalling the product and then re-installing it doesn't help. I'm also unable to start it in Safe-Mode.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  • Firefox constantly crashes on startup

Firefox is continually crashing on me. It opens for a few seconds to tell me it can't open my tabs, and then crashes. My Mac OSX is up-to-date, and I ran a virus scan yesterday (before I started having problems with Firefox) and it found nothing. I've tried launching Firefox in safe mode, but still have the problem. I've set up Firefox for automatic updates, so I believe it's up-to-date.

  • Firefox keeps crashing apon startup and unable to send crash report

Last night I was browsing the web and ended up having 300+ tabs opened, FIrefox started to slow tremendously and stopped responding a couple of times. Was given the option to close Firefox from the popup window and choose to close Firefox, unfortunately when I tried to open Firefox again it crashed and gave me the crash reporter and when I tried to submit the report the report it encountered a problem and is unable to send the report. I've run Firefox in safe mode and is working fine but when I try to restart with add-ons disabled its still crashes and unable to send report.

Try to start Firefox with the about:blank page by creating a copy of the current Firefox desktop shortcut and add a space and <b>-url "about:blank"</b> to the target field.
Try to delete the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder to prevent restoring the crashed session.

  • Firefox 34 crashes on startup (in safe mode too)

Ubuntu 14.10, "Mozilla Firefox 34.0". It has started crashing on it's own without any new tabs or sites being opened. It doesn't even run in "safe-mode".
When I run FF, it shows the main window and if try to restore my tabs, it crashes. Even without restoring, if I click on the "Open menu" icon (top right corner), it still crashes. Not sure if it's a Gtk issue. I tried downgrading to FF 33 and that was crashing even without showing the main window.

    Help

A "BEX" error often indicates there is a malware process trying to inject itself into Firefox in an inappropriate way, so Windows shuts it down to protect you.
When I search for information on nsib.dll, it's inconclusive. For example: [https://www.virustotal.com/en-gb/file/7739cad2495359a139ef31062f54d683ce549bc4d7cca13f8d1cdaca86b3474d/analysis/ VirusTotal analysis].
Assuming it is a bad add-on, I suggest starting here:
Open the Windows '''Control Panel''', Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
You can "mop up" remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools suggested in this support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
Finally, start Firefox in its Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key when double-clicking the Firefox shortcut/icon. In the small dialog that should appear, choose "Start in Safe Mode"
Then open the '''Add-ons page''' using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Does that clear it up?

  • Firefox keeps crashing on startup

Whenever I try to open Firefox, it brings up a Crash Report notice, and if I click Restart Firefox, whether or not I submit the crash report, it only brings up another Crash Report Notice. I tried to fix the issue, but all of the suggested fixes (updating, safe mode) require Firefox to open, and I have not been able to complete them.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the ''Mozilla'' folder, then double-click on ''Firefox'' and then on ''Crash reports''. Double-click on ''submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to ''View'' > ''Arrange Icons by'' > ''Modified'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with '''bp-''' into the reply window on the forums.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • After restore , uninstall, and reinstall, firefox still crashes on startup on Mac

I had about 20-30 tabs open, but that has never been an issue. Firefox was slow to load an active page, and suggested restore. I clicked restore and tried to reopen firefox. the main page came up and then crashed. I tried again and it crashed again. I opened in safe mode, and it crashed. I uninstalled from the app folder, opened opera to download and reinstall, and it still crashed. That was two days ago. I cleaned everything off the computer related to firefox in the spotlight search, and uninstalled and reinstalled. It opened for a little longer, and crashed again.
