Firefox 17 painfully slow on new laptop

I have a brand new laptop running Windows 7 64 bit. Firefox 17 is running very very slow. IE9 runs perfectly fine. Speedtest.net results using IE averages 13MB download speeds; using Firefox averages 2.5MB.
Is there a known compatibility issue with Windows 7 64 bit or something? I love Firefox and want to use it over IE, so I'm hoping there's a fix.
By the way, I tried a couple of tweeks that I found online, but they didn't seem to help or hurt the problem.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
If you use F-Secure Browser Protection then see:
Try to disable "Use advanced process monitoring" in the F-Secure Deepguard settings.
*open Computer Security main window and select "Settings"
*in settings dialog go to "DeepGuard"
*uncheck "Use advanced process monitoring" checkbox
Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

  • Safari painfully slow on new Mac Mini

I know there have been a number of threads on this topic and I have tried all of the tricks listed but Safari is still painfully slow to load web pages. I have tested my internet connection and it is fine. The real interesting thing here is that when I boot up under Windows (using Boot Camp) web pages load blazingly fast under IE, so it seems unlikely that I have a hardware problem. I have also tried Firefox with similar results. I love this new machine but I am pulling my hair out over its browsing performance.
    Anyone have a (new) thought?

Please try a test account to see how Safari works
there, if you do not have an other user account,
Go to System preferences ->Accounts ->Login Options
Tried this and believe it or not the problem was worse!
se the [+] to create one, you can later use [-] to
    delete/remove the account.
Do you use a third party Firewall or one on your
    router ?
    No on both accounts
Do you use DHCP Lease ?
Yes, I hit the "renew lease" button which had no effect
In the Network ->TCP/IP tab do you have DNS # values
    entered in the
    DNS Servers box.
    No entries in the DNS
Proxies tab, do you have any proxies selected ? if
Yes how does Safari surf with out it ?
    No proxies selected
Let us know what your findings are.

I am going to try FireFox again and see if there are any things I can tweak that make it bearable.

  • What Firefox version choices do I have for using Firefox on new laptop running Win 7 64-bit, and how do I move bookmarks from current laptop running Firefox 3.5.13 to new laptop?

Currently running Firefox 3.5.13 on laptop using Windows XP pro sp3 and will want to move my bookmarks to a new laptop. New laptop uses Win 7 pro 64-bit OS. I have read too many conflicting reports about Firefox and Win 7 and understand that Firefox is working on a true 64-bit version. What are my choices for a stable web browser for new laptop and which particular version of Firefox is recommended and the pros and cons of that suggestion? (I believe one can run Firefox 32 bit version in the 64 bit environment, but is that the best choice?) I have not installed Firefox on new laptop yet and am eager to dump IE. This is being posted from my old laptop. Thanks ...

If you go to this link you will be assured by Microsoft and Win7 "new" app checking and making sure that all drivers and software you have is compatible with Win7 64 bit. And in this article it states that Firefox version 3 IS compatible and designed for 64 bit OS, hm mm well as you know that is incorrect!! As of today Mozilla Firefox is not designed for a 64 bit computer. Thank you for your honesty and it saved me a big headache By being upnt and honest. my books!! Great job!!

  • Firefox will not sync on new laptop though it does sign in to sync

I bought a new laptop and downloaded firefox. I then signed in to sync. All seemed ok and the message popped up that it would syn momentarily. It does not sync anything even though it shows as signed in. I have rebooted the browser and pc and tried every thing I can imagine. I even signed the old laptop out of firefox syn just in case that was the issue. Please help.

    It says: Setup Complete
Your data is now being encrypted and uploaded in the background. You can close this tab and continue using Firefox.
The old laptop has version 33.1.1 - it is up to date.

  • Firefox is painfully slow, but Safari is normal/quick

Hello. My pc laptop is running so slooow with Firefox browser, but with Safari it is normal, fast. This started 2 days ago. Firefox was running very nicely, fast, normal. Now I have to wait to see the letters after I type....everything is slow... Why? What can I do to make it normal again? I prefer Firefox.

For me this problems started with version 29. In another thread it was suggested that hardware acceleration might be the problem. I turned off hardware acceleration, and that fixed the problem.
    >>Tools>Options>Advanced>General Tab>Use hardware acceleration when available <<= uncheck

  • Slow Imaging new laptops

    Hi,
    Environment
    Novell NetWare 6.5 sp 4a
Zenworks for Desktops 4.01 IR 7
We received new Acer laptops, imaging these is succesfull though TERRIBLY slow (up to 30 minutes for a 2 GB image). Storing an image on the server is relatively fast (13 minutes). My guess is the harddisk from the laptops which are Serial ATA harddisks (ST98823AS). I tried to force the -d1 setting to force use of dma through the hdparm.s file, but that is not accepted on the laptops. I checked our desktops and they do accept that setting.
I checked the network speed and that seems OK to me, auto gives a 100 FD connection to the switch.
    This is driving me crazy!!
    Thanks in advance

motherboard chipset.. mainly.. but I guess if you can't configure the bios
you can be happy that you get the sata drives imaged at all.. and that also
means that they should already run in combined mode..
If you are running IR7 for ZFD 4.1 you have no real options left, it could
be an issue with the nic driver, you could take a look at forge if there is
a newer one.. otherwise the switch should be configured for auto neg.
    IIRC..

  • Firefox 9 painfully slow site loads

Since upgrading to 9 I find that visiting web sites invariably means a 10 second or more wait until they load.
Once the site eventually loads subsequent clicks to other pages are much faster.
This happens even with all add ons deactivated.

    SOLVED for me:
I had the same issue. Firefox 3.6 was just fine loading pages, switching between tabs, etc. Firefox 8 & 9 were just awful - not just page load speed, but switching between loaded tabs, accessing Firefox menus - everything was really poky.
I did an uninstall with RevoUninstaller, then made sure every trace of FF was gone, and then did a clean reinstall of FF 9.1 - still the same problem.
FF 9 ran just fine in Safe mode, so I disabled all plugins, and no extensions were installed yet, but no difference.
Then I looked over Help/Troubleshooting from the FF 9 menu, and noticed that OpenGL might be enabled for faster graphics rendering. I know that other apps (Photoshop) can actually slow down if your video card doesn't fully support OpenGL acceleration.
    '''TRY THIS'''
So I looked in FF Options/Advanced and noticed under the General tab that hardware acceleration is checked by default.
I UNchecked hardware acceleration and now it's back to normal - and somewhat faster than 3.6. YAY!
I'm not sure if my OpenGL theory is correct, but that fixed the slowness for me.

  • Safari Painfully Slow on new iMac

I just got this computer yesterday, so it's state of the art and yet, Safari is totally irritating. It's slower on this computer that on my G4!!!!!!!!! I'm using DSL w/ethernet. Any suggestions?

Network panel in Tiger is different than Leopard.
    Follow these directions:
-Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the location drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
-Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Depending on whether you use Ethernet or Airport (wireless) for your setup: Only Ethernet or Airport ought to be checked. Move it to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply". Everything else ought to be unchecked unless you use a Bluetooth device.
-Back to the "Show" menu, select either "Ethernet" or "Airport" (whichever applies to you). Click on the TCP panel. There, if you live outside the US enter 208.67.222.220 and 208.67.220.222 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box - these are Opensource DNS codes. and select "apply". If you live in the US use Verizon's 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 public codes instead of the OpenDNS codes.

  • XP computer painfully slow when latest Firefox is installed

I have a win vista computer which has worked for years and run Firefox fine, Two weeks ago I upgraded firefox as usual and Firefox became painfully slow. A nerdy friend tried reloading the latest Firefox and concluded Firefox was much slower than Explorer or than Opera. My wife is very unhappy. What do I do now?

Well you could start with giving us the troubleshooting information from the Firefox installation that's having problems<br>
*Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the ''Help'' menu and select ''Troubleshooting Information'' from the submenu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select ''Troubleshooting Information'' from the menu.
Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
*At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
*Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

  • I had synced all my infos (passwords etc.) in my old laptop but today, when I linked my new laptop with my firefox sync account, I didn't find my saved infos.

Before I came to my new place, I had saved all my info like passwords, bookmarks etc. in my old laptop and synced them with my Firefox sync account. But, after I came to my new place, I bought a new laptop. But when I signed in my Firefox sync account in my new laptop, I didn't find all those bookmarks or saved passwords. What do I do?

Yes, I would say that your passwords are gone. When the Sync Key is "updated" as indicated in that part of the sync-log that I cropped, the server is wiped of the users data because that data is useless. That Sync key is the encryption key for the users data when that data is off the user's devices which are connected to Firefox Sync. No one except for the person with the correct Sync Key (the "owner" of that Sync account) can use that data as the data is scrambled.
I am curious about the full text of the last two sync-log files, 11kb and 38kb is a lot more data than usual for a sync-log. On my 3 separate Sync accounts I usually see sync-log files of 3kb to 8 kb when there is an error-. Problem is that this forum software doesn't provide for file uploads, and doing a copy&paste of that data into the Reply Box doesn't preserve the line formatting - making it very difficult to read and follow the sequence of events.
Sorry we didn't have a successful conclusion.

  • Firefox will not load on a new laptop. Keeps returning "runtime error".

After loading Firefox 3.6 on a new laptop, it ran for a while. Then, it would not run. Keeps returning. "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library: Runtime error. This program has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
Uninstalling and then reinstalling the latest version of Firefox does not help the problem.
    Laptop running Win7.64, 4GB RAM, i5 processor.
    Thank you.

Automatic "syncing" of content (such as song files) using iTunes is generally only in one direction, from computer to iPod.  So, iTunes will not put songs back on the computer's hard drive from the iPod using syncing.  The assumption for syncing is that everything on the iPod is already in the computer's iTunes library.
Previous song purchases from the iTunes Store can be re-downloaded at no cost from the iTunes Store Purchased screen.  The link to Purchased is on the iTunes Store Home screen, under QUICK LINKS.  You need to be signed in with the Apple ID used to make the purchases.
There are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer song files from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.

  • Intel 4500MHD painfully slow/not really working...

I have an Intel 4500MHD card in my laptop and it's just painfully slow, my previous laptop had an X3100 that worked great and i thought this would be an upgrade, how very wrong of me to believe that. Glxgears shows some 100 FPS and glxinfo says i have direct rendering support. I'm using core, community and extra repositories with an xorg.conf generated by X -configure without any additional options to the device section besides the default ones.
Yesterday i tried to run open arena and the game just exits when i try to initiate a game from the main menu.
Anyone had luck in getting this card to work a little more efficiently while not recompiling half of their system?
Last edited by goll (2009-02-04 15:42:49)

    Unfortunately no.
Put simply, there are a few major intel-related changes going on right now, and the short story is that the intel drivers are using newer tech than Mesa and such are. However, the required packages haven't been brought up to date yet (I think they haven't been marked stable upstream and such).
The first step however is kernel 2.6.28, which includes half of the "fix", to simplify. Now, this won't make your FPS go straight back up - you'll need to wait for newer versions of Mesa and such to be rolled out - but it's a start, especially if you don't already have 2.6.28.
From there, I'm sure you've seen this thread which outlines what to recompile. I'll probably wait though, since 100FPS is quite an upgrade for me - I didn't have hardware rendering until a month or so ago (I think) - and my system is slow enough as it is (it can't use DDR2 RAM) for me to really bother with fast graphics anyway.
