Firefox 17 refuses to launch from link in email or desktop shortcut

Unfortunately I cannot swear that this is a new defect, but...
If FFox is not already running, neither clicking a link in an email (from Thunderbird), nor dbl-clicking a shortcut on my desktop, will launch Firefox. OTOH if FFox is already running then such gestures will create a new tab in the browser and navigate to the indicated URL.
YES, I have already tried temporarily making IE (32-bit) the default browser and then reverting to FFox. Does not fix the defect. And BTW the checkbox "always check to see if Firefox is default" apparently does nothing, because FFox declines to ask (do you want me to be default?).
YES, I have looked at Default Programs inside Control Panel and all 3 web protocols are already set to point to Firefox.
I would appreciate any solution to this or confirmation that this is indeed a defect.
FFox 17.0.1
Win 7 Home Prem 64-bit

Thanks to both posters for replying. However, as I said in OP, I have already set FF as default, and checked protocol associations for http, https, etc. Note that when FF process is running, links '''do''' cause URL to be rendered in new FF tab.
Also, when the problem occurs, there is no message / error dialog presented, only a silent failure of FF to launch.
The 2 referenced URLs at kb.mozillazine.org are stuffed with details that in a quick reading, seem not to apply. Perhaps other FF users experience this defect and tolerate it, or my particular environment is (hard to believe) somehow special.

  • Why does a different version of firefox open from links in emails

I haven't been using Firefox long but have added FVD speed dial and a couple of other things and I find that, if I click on a link in an email or something a plain version of Firefox opens, without any extensions etc. if the normal version isn't already running.
Is there any way to get my usual version to open from links?
I don't know if it makes any difference but I did switch to a portable version from the normal install as I run an SSD as a primary drive and couldn't get enough control over file placement with the normal install version and didn't notice if this happened before I changed over.

Sorry, Firefox Portable can't set as the Default Browser, which is what external links will use.

  • Firefox will not let me send link via email - multipul tabs open ?

I went to send a link , I opened file went to send link and many tabs opened
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

The Ask Toolbar is causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. Uninstall that extension.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
    * Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
    * Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

  • How to pass variable from link in email into HTML DB

On our helpdesk application, we want to send emails to impacted customers, and have them click on a link in the email (that contains their ticket number) to get to a response form in HTML DB without having to copy and paste or re-enter that ticket number. How would I do this? At this point I don't know if the email will come from Outlook or from HTML DB.
Also, I see that there is a version of HTML DB for Windows machines. Does it interface with MS Exchange?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
I have a HR Incident Reporting HTMLDB application that sends details of assigned calls to the assignee's email account, detailing the issue and including a URL to the relevant page in the application.
When the user clicks on the URL (appears as a link in their email) they go straight into the relevant application page (via login screen).
We use lotus notes, but I see no reason Exchange would work in the same way.
    Cheers,
    Rob Chalton

  • Remove hyperlinks from links inside email

I was wondering if you could create an exchange transport rule that would check all incoming email for hyperlinks, if it seen one, it would remove the hyperlink and change it just into text.

    Hello,
Please try to build a transport agent to remove all HTML links from an incoming SMTP messages. And you need to use Visual Studio to realize it.
You can refer to the "Setting up the Environment" section in the following blog:

  • Firefox v28 will not launch yahoo and yahoo email often hangs. the problems started with v28, does not even load the homepage in the addr bar on startup.

i set yahoo mail as a homepage.
start firefox v28 and the screen goes blank, nothing shows in the addr bar and it just sits with
the spinning green icon. no problems until i moved to v28. i often have issues with flash player
hanging and created a dos bat file to kill it but that is not what seems to be happening with yahoo. pretty much everything else works. FF freezes but killing the plug in releases it. the newer versions
of FF seem more flakey than the older ones. thanks for your help

How do you kill the Flash player plugin using a BAT file -- are you killing an Adobe Flash exe or Firefox's plugin-container.exe?
You can start up Firefox to a blank page using the Run box on the Start menu, with this:
    firefox.exe "about:blank"
Hopefully that will at least get you in. Then, for Yahoo mail, make sure to access your mailbox through the Yahoo home page (or AT&T Yahoo home page, etc., as the case may be). And:
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens you can remove your Yahoo cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
To rule out extensions as a possible culprit, could you try the site in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions, some advanced features, and some custom settings. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
    * Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Note: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox closes, a small dialog should appear: click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
    Any difference?

  • Certain websites require IE, and accidentally setting Firefox as my default browser has completely messed up my desktop shortcuts.

When I changed my default back to IE, the icons changed back, but everything still opens in Firefox... How can I get the shortcuts to open in IE? I've tried deleting the original shortcuts and creating new ones, but they still open in Firefox...
    Thanks

    Hi,
I'm not 100% sure I understand your problem. From what you've said, I think you're saying you've changed your default browser to Firefox, and the desktop icons all changed from the internet explorer icon (the blue e) to the firefox icon. You've changed the default browser back to IE, but the icons haven't changed back, and when you click on them they open in Firefox.
If that's the case, the problem is with your default browser setup. From what you've said, you've already set it in the browser similiar to [[How to make web links open in Firefox by default|the support article]]; for some reason Windows hasn't changed the default browser.
You could try (in Win 7) opening the control panel, then Programs ->Set Default Programs, and click on Internet Explorer in there, then "Set this Program as Default".

  • When launching and opening tabs from links in outlook express not all tabs appear

Since upgrading to Firefox 21 when I click on links in emails in Outlook Express not all the links open new tabs, but when I attempt to close Firefox it says there are more tabs open than are being displayed. Firefox also becomes sluggish to non-responsive during these "evolutions". If I open Firefox first before clicking links in emails it does not display this behavior.

The DDE fix does not appear to address the same problem I'm having. I receive no error windows or indications of any kind, the tabs just never appear, yet when I close firefox it will ask me if I want to close all "X" tabs ( and X appears to equal the number of tabs I tried to open).

  • Firefox doesn't launch correct link

    Small bug:
If Firefox is not running, and I click on a link in my email program, Firefox launches and displays my home page instead of the URL in the link. If Firefox is running, it goes to the correct URL.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Firefox will not start and open a website from a Thunderbird email link. It will go to a link from Thunderbird once Firefox is open, but will not initially start Firefox and proceed to open the Thunderbird email link.

Firefox will not ''start'' and open a website from a Thunderbird email link. A link from Thunderbird will open once Firefox is ''already'' started, but will not initially start Firefox and proceed to open the Thunderbird email link.

I also have this problem. I cannot open links from a discussion board I frequent nor can I open links from my email. Also after opening my email, I cannot go to any other sites except my home page. I can then go no where else.
When I close Firefox and try to reopen it, it does nothing! I have to bring up the Task Manager and end the Firefox process before I can get back in.
To the best of my knowledge, this problem started with the new update to Ver. 3.6.9. I am running Windows XP Media Center 2005
