Firefox 18.0.1 consuming excessive CPU--both in Standard and Safe Mode--when accessing Gmail

Firefox 18.0.1 consumes excessive CPU--both in Standard and Safe Modes--when accessing Gmail (in Standard Mode). CPU consumption averages around 56% on my dual-CPU, Windows 7 desktop.
The only way to stop this from happening it to open Gmail in "HTML" mode. When I open Gmail in Standard mode, a "Loading..." status shows at the top of the page. After about 30 seconds, a error window pops-up within the Gmail page saying that there is a performance problem and provides the option to load Gmail in a limited, "HTML" mode. Clicking the HTML Mode link solves the issue. I've been using Firefox for years and have never seen this issue until now.

at odd times I will get a second instance of Firefox startup. I have run avast av, spybot, malwarebytes, both in normal and safe mode and nothing has been found, any ideas?

That second one sounds like malware.
Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />

1. You have a pre-release Beta 1 version of what will become Firefox 4 in like 5 or 6 months. Unless you are intending to test it for flaws and report those flaws to help in the development process, don't use it.
2. Did you create a new Profile for 4.0b1, and are you using that Profile with it? That isn't done automatically when you install 4.0b1, and those of us who have been doing the "testing" for many years consider a new Profile as the basis of doing out testing.

IMO, Mozilla is making a huge mistake by directly offering these beta versions to the general public.
Also IMO. if you want to play with 4.0b1, use the Portable Firefox 4.0beta version to minimize any conflicts with a currently installed version of Firefox, and to eliminate the need for creating a new Profile for 4.0 Beta #:
Download Firefox Portable Test to your hard drive and double click the FirefoxPortableTest_4.0_Beta_#_English.paf.exe file. The entire installation (including a new Profile for "Portable") will be self-contained in the \Program Files\FirefoxPortableTest\ folder and won't interfere with an "official" version that you already have installed. Your Profile will be in the \Program Files\FirefoxPortableTest\Data\profile\ folder.
The "down side" is that Firefox Portable won't launch if any other version of Firefox is already running.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.
Thanks in advance!

• What is the most efficent way to create both a standard and HD DVD

Hi,
I'm just getting into HD video editing, and I have relatives who will be several years behind me. I will be making HD DVD's for myself to use, but I will also need to make standard DVD's to send to my relatives.I am assuming that the HD DVD's I create will not play in a standard DVD player. I may be wrong. However, If this is correct, is there a particular point in the process of working with Encore where I can make that choice, create the DVD, and then go back and alter it in order to create the other type without destroying and having to redo everything that was done up to that point?

Thank you Hunt. Being ahead of most of the rest of the world and getting the best technology out there can be a pain sometimes. Reading through Jon Geddes' article left me scratching my head several times, and some of it went way over my head, but I'll keep at it, until it sinks in. Some language, terms, and shorthand, I'm sure are simple to understand to a lot of people, but I'm not in that catagory. I'll just keep working at it.

I would edit the Project in HD in PrPro. The BD authoring part will be straight workflow.
For the SD DVD-Video, you have a few choices. You can Export to DV-AVI Type II for Import into a new Encore Project for the DVD. Some feel that PrPro does not do a good job at down-rezing from HD to SD. For a workflow that will likely yield better quality, see this http://www.precomposed.com/blog/2009/07/hd-to-sd-dvd-best-methods/. If you have PrPro/Encore CS4, then Jeff Bellune's /thread/487134?tstart=0 might be useful to you. Just follow the links to the tutorial.
Good luck,
Hunt

# Question
i can only get my bookmarks to appear in safe mode when starting firefox normally they do not appear

Extensions can sometimes be the cause of problems. If the problem does not occur in Safe Mode, then you can disable your extensions one-by-one until you find out which one is causing the problem. See Troubleshooting extensions and themes

Suddenly on both my iPhone and iPad I cannot access my AOL mail.  It tells me my user name or password are incorrect.  Yet I have no trouble accessing from other devices.  This occurred randomly in the middle of the night.  I'd done nothing different or unusual.  I've tried re-starting both devices, tried deleting and re-installing my account information.  Any suggestions?

Hmm... looks like this is an issue for that email provider for some reason.
A user in a bt.com forums recommends turning off Push Emails settings.
http://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/quot-incorrect-user-name-or-password -quot-Oh-no-it-isn-t/td-p/408763
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data > Turn Push Off.
Coudln't hurt to try it and see if the issue resolves itself.

• I have changed both my ID and password, but when I try to download updates to apps, my old email account shows up and I can't sign in

I have changed both my ID and password, but when I try to download updates to apps, my old email account shows up and I can't sign in

That indicates that you have apps that need updating that were purchased with the account that comes up. When you have apps that need updating that were purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until all the remaining apps were purchased by one account.
You have to log into the account that purchased an app in order to update it.

• Suspend firefox menu and safe mode

I would like to use Firefox to run my application, but do not want user save data by Save as function, how can I suspend whole menu and safe mode? Many tks!

Hi junior08,
Sorry I am not sure I understand what you are attempting. Perhaps you would explain in more detail.
*You have an application
** Is this something you have coded yourself ? <br />or is it something you have downloaded ?
* The USER
** Is that you ?
** Someone else using your computer ?
** Or some other user with their own device and their own Firefox
* DATA what is this ?
** which device is this on ? <br />(If it is on the users own device they would already normally have access to the data one way or another)

• Firefox hangs for 20-60 seconds at a time, including in safe mode

Starting last week, with Firefox 6.02, my copy of Firefox kept crashing on opening, even in safe mode. This week, 7.0 hit, and I installed that. Now, Firefox freezes periodically as I click on things -- right-clicking on bookmarks, clicking links, opening new tabs, opening the Firefox menu, you name it.
I've done a complete uninstall and reinstall, and loaded up Safe Mode. Firefox still hangs no matter what I try.

Ok try and enable the default theme.
What I think is key here perhaps is that in XP safe mode your anti virus real time scanning is disabled. In normal mode it is not.
The fact both Thunderbird modes work fine in XP safe mode indicated that your anti virus or other startup application is the root cause of the issue.
My first option is anti virus as they cause so many problems. What are you using?
Unrelated but based on something I was reading this morning, I suggest you run [http:// http://www.adlice.com/softwares/roguekiller/ RogueKiller in addition to normal anti virus a few times ion the coming days.
As your using XP and probably have older software to go with the older operating system. The messy details of this new file free threat can be found here

• V 17 & 18 use minimum of 30% cpu (even with all add-ons disable and safe mode) on MacBook 10.7

I have been having problems since release 17 (at least) with Firefox sucking up CPU. I have 4GB ram and often have multiple programs open, including Firefox with between 5 and 15 tabs / windows. Decreasing the number of open tabs / windows will decrease CPU usage by 2% for each tab / window closed until it hits 30%, then no more improvement. Oddly enough it drops to a constant 25% when Firefox is NOT in safe mode and all my plugins are enabled. But not below.
Help. I love firefox, but it is becoming more and more problematic.

I found a suggestion on this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/912984?tstart=0
that says to turn of the window restore feature in Lion. I turned it off and was able to install AIR and run the AIR application I use.
You can turn off the window restore feature in System Preferences -> General

• Firefox will not open up. It gives me the choice to reset firefox or open safe mode. reset firefox does nothing and safe mode just continues to load .

When it is in safe mode the wheel just spins and nothing happens. When reset firefox is selected nothing happens. I have erased firefox and redownloaded it many times and the same thing occurs.

Can you bring up the Profile Manager to create a new profile?
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

Help me please
Thanks in advance.

Hello sanchit77,
Thank you for posting here on the Mozilla Support Forums! We appreciate you as a user of Firefox!
I would suggest a clean reinstall to resolve your issue.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox and any leftover program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps one by one:
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu) and confirm all upcoming messages.
#Now, uninstall Firefox by following the steps mentioned in the Uninstall Firefox article.
IMPORTANT: On Windows, the uninstaller has the option to remove your personal data and settings. Make sure that you do not check this option; otherwise all of your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, user customizations and other Firefox user profile data will be removed from your computer.
After uninstalling Firefox on Windows, delete the "Mozilla Firefox" program folder, located by default in one of these locations:
* (On 32-bit Windows) C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
* (On 64-bit Windows) C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#Go to the Windows Start menu and click on "Computer".
#In the Explorer window that opens, double click Local Disk (C:) to open the C:\ drive.
#Find the "Program Files (x86)" folder or "Program Files" folder.
#* On 32-bit Windows, double-click the Program Files folder to open it.
#* On 64-bit Windows, you will see a "Program Files (x86)" folder AND a "Program Files" folder. Open the Program Files (x86) folder.
#Look for a Mozilla Firefox folder. If you find one, right-click it and select Delete and confirm that you want to move the folder to the Recycle Bin.
Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
#Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
#Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
