Firefox 18.0 hangs on wmv files, plugin IS WORKING

Since 18.0 can't click on wmv link, the entire browser HANGS and have to close ALL TABS. I went to the site at Microsoft and downloaded the XP-Windows7 plugin, and installed it. (by the way, that plugin is 6 years old - can't MIGHTY MICROSOFT write a new one?)
So now the plugin shows installed and working, but every single time I try to access a wmv file, it HANGS FIREFOX. I have my OWN WEBSITE that I can't even open anymore, how embarrassing. HELP!
Windows 7 Home Premium on Intel i7 64 bit with 6gb RAM

Amitshree - Yes, I already updated it, right after I posted the question, and the problem did go away! I just did an update within the last week, but turns out that was on my OLD computer (to run netflix), not this one, which was 3 versions back! I just don't keep up with release numbers, have so much software running on this computer.
So I guess besides learning my memory is failing me, I also learned that the recommended fix of installing that old plugin didn't fix anything, LOL!
By the way, I think NoScript is the most brilliant add-on that has ever been invented (I'm a security expert), and if anybody's plugins can't get a long with it, I'll do without everything else but NoScript!!!

• Solaris Sparc 10, Firefox 3.6, Java v6 update 18 plugin not working

The java plugin (v6 update 18) for Firefox 3.6 on Solaris Sparc 10 is not working for me.

The Shockwave Flash plugin shows up in the Add-ons/Plugins window but java does not.
Any suggestions?

Obviously Sun (excuse me, Oracle) does not intend to support the solaris-10/sparc/firefox-3.6 combination. Firefox 3.6 requires the NPAPI and/or NPRuntime interfaces to java, but oracle does not provide the new "libnpjp2.so" java plugin with the jre-6u18-sparc-solaris java download.
A search at www.oracle.com does not turn up any support announcement about this. You have to learn it the hard way. :(
If you want to continue to use sparc-solaris, downgrade to firefox-3.5 so you can use the old libjavaplugin_oji.so module. Otherwise run Linux or Mac OS X to stay in the unix camp.

• How I get firefox tab history even sessionstore.bak file is not working after renamed?

My pc is restart due to power failer. I lost my important tabs. Session restore is not working. Then I renamed sessionrestore.bak file to sessionrestore.js. But still not working. I want get my all tab in sessionrestore.bak again. So please help me to do this.
If any JavaScript function to filter url from sessionrestore.bak is also ok.

Do you have clean backup copies of all the sessionstore files? Please do that first to avoid possibly having them deleted or overwritten.

• Firefox 6.0 w/ win media player plugin 1.0.0.8 enabled ALWAYS asks if I want to open a .wmv file with Win Media Player.

Firefox 6.0 would not open .wmv files, so I downloaded and installed M/S windows media player firefox plugin, ver 1.0.0.8.
I have checked using the plugin mgr that it is installed and enabled, but firefox still will not open .wmv files - It still brings up a window asking if I want to use Win Media Player to open the file.

• When trying to download a wmv file it opens in safari instead.

I have a mac. I had an old version of firefox and upgraded to 3.6.8.
with my old version of firefox, when I download a wmv file from a site it would ask were to save, no with 3.6 it opens the file in safari.

Go to Edit -> Preferences. If that option doesn't appear, it might be under Tools -> Options. Once that window is open, click on Applications and scroll down to WMV or WMV Video or something along those lines. Click the text in the Action column once to select it, then again to open the dropdown list. Change it to Save File.
That should do it!

• I have three .wmv files on my web site that play automatically on firefox at the same time.

All three wmv files auto start one right after the other when you visit the page in Firefox (I'm using 5.0). There are no start/pause buttons beneath the video screen. When using internet explorer everything works as intended in that you have to push the play button. I updated my plugins for firefox and that did not remedy the problem. Can someone please help me out with this?

I performed additional updates of flash player and it resolved this issue.

• Firefox 5.0 doesn't play Window Media Player (WMV) files.

Not sure when this problem occurred since I don't really play WMV files until recently, but I do remember it working correctly before Firefox 4.0. Whenever I load any type of WMV file in Firefox, it doesn't seem to play the files. The "Play" is there, and it seems that the file is completely loaded, but when I press the play button, it says "Connecting", then it doesn't say anything and nothing appears. Before, I would get a message on the bottom telling me the % of the download/stream was buffered, but not anymore. Any idea what the cause of this might be?

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

• Firefox 4 randomly hangs for a few seconds

When im browsing, Firefox 4 randomly hangs for ~10 seconds saying its "Not Responding", then it returns to normal.
I dont seem to see a pattern on when it hangs, sometimes its when i open new pages, sometimes im just scrolling, sometimes i'm not doing anything...
It didnt seem to happen before i updated to FFx 4
My best guess is it happens when its trying to "Sync"?
It's not that bad, but it gets annoying after a while.

It is also possible that Firefox is doing maintenance to places.sqlite (bookmarks and history). If you keep a large history or have a lot of bookmarks then you can check that out as well. Also make sure that security (anti-virus) software isn't blocking access to files in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
See:
* Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)
See:
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

• WMV files to DVD

I am trying to get downloaded wmv files into a playable dvd using a G5. I have been using a program called "Snapz" which records the the windows media player playing the wmv file. It then converts the file to a DV quicktime file which I import into imovie and then burn a dvd from there. I can do it but the resulting quality is pretty bad. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how I could possible get better results? Perhaps using a different program other than Snapz? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Using imovie 4, Quicktime7.03, OSX 10.3.9.

There is a program... I forget what it's called... hang on...
go to the downloads/macosx/video section of apple's site and type in wmv in the search window... or just type that in the search window and select "video" as the section you want to search... either way works... you'll get this link:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/flip4macwmvstudiopro.html
the maker's website address can be found in the top right corner beside "Company" and if you click on it you will get this link:
http://www.telestream.net/
and if you read down the products list it'll show "macintosh media tools" and a link to "Flip4Mac"
http://www.telestream.net/products/flip4mac.htm
and the software really works... there are trial versions or both the lower end "quicktime plugin" that will allow playing wmv on quicktime and the more robust one for exporting and converting.
i've tried the "trial" version and months later many wmv files will still play in quicktime and i've even converted a few in compressor... but for some reason some wmv's don't... so somehow it's still working away long after the trial.
anyway, hope that helps

• How come IE works fine while Firefox crashes and hangs constantly

IE works fine while Firefox opensn 1 web page then hangs, crashes when trying to access "source", does not render Windows Media Player content, update to 3.6.9 hangs in eternal download mode, then frazzles, on Windows XP with AMD processor and Firefox 3.6.8.

Your plugins list in the system details doesn't show the WMP plugin.<br />
You need to install the WMP plugin for Firefox if you want to see embedded WMP content.
See:
Using the Windows Media Player plugin with Firefox
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_Media_Player#Missing_plugin
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update (Software Update not working properly)<br />
Remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\&lt;user&gt;\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
(%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\updates
Download a fresh copy of Firefox ( http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html ) and do a reinstall of Firefox over the top of the current version.
If that still causes the same problem then do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
