Firefox 3.5 and up randomly drop connections

Greetings! The problem I'm having is: Every time I've tried to install and use Firefox 3.5 and up, as I'm browsing the web and I go to, say, click on a link, Firefox will randomly "drop" the connection. It'll pause for 10-15 seconds, then pop up a generic "cannot find server" message. I then go to reload the page, and for another 10-15 seconds it won't even attempt a connection -- it'll just instant-reload with the same generic "cannot find server" message. After that, it will mysteriously be able to connect just fine... for about 2-5 minutes. The problem repeats... over and over...
I should mention that I constantly have a "ping www.rr.com" window open in the background, and even when Firefox is "unable to connect", the ping window shows my connection is just fine. All of my other programs are able to connect just fine as well -- only Firefox 3.5+ or programs based off of Firefox 3.5+ (SeaMonkey 2.x) have this problem.
Thinking it might be an addon problem, I've completely uninstalled (even using Revo Uninstaller) and reinstalled Firefox 3.5+, and even with absolutely no extensions installed, it still randomly drops connections.
This problem also happens on my netbook PC, again with a fresh Firefox install (even on a fresh Windows format + install) and a solid ISP connection.
I can confirm encountering this problem with Firefox 3.5.4, 3.5.5, 3.6.6, and even with SeaMonkey 2.0.3 and 2.0.5. On the other hand, Firefox versions 2.0.0.20 and SeaMonkey 1.1.18 are NOT affected by this problem.
I hope this problem can be resolved soon, since sites like Youtube are starting to really dislike Firefox 2.0, and I'd like to use up-to-date browser extensions. :(

  • Linksys wrt54gs randomly dropping connection

I have a linksys wrt54gs wireless g router. it just started dropping connection randomly. I was playin xbox live one day, and i lagged out. noticed pc internet was gone too.... so whats causing this? i just updated FW as well. i have the xbox and my pc connected wired. PC in the other room wireless, but doesnt work, hasn tworked fo rlong time. shows its connected, but no interent access...
anywasy main problem righ now is it dropping all connections at random times. i'll unplug and replug teh router and modem back in, it'll work for a lil bit, but on xbox live, it lags out and disconnect sin a few minutes

As you upgraded the router's firmware,I would suggest you to reset the router and reconfigure all the settings from the scratch.... On the setup page, reduce the MTU value to 1365 and click on save settings...Under the Wireless tab,Change the SSID(Network Name) to some unique name and channel to 11-2.462 GHz and click on save settings...Under the Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...Now,power cycle the router and check...

  • Stable at at rubbish speeds and then randomly drop...

This is driving me up the wall,
    1) My speeds are terrible at the best of times, if over £150 million has been spent on the UK broadband infalstructure then why hasn't my line/exchange got any better?
    2) My hub will sync to a pretty rubbish 3-4mbps with less than 15db of noise on the line and be stable for a few days, then randomly drop to 160kbps with over 30db of noise
I have contacted BT multiple times and they do the same old diagnosis and end up re setting my line, it works fine for a week or two (if I'm lucky) then one day, boom, 160kbps ADSL speed. This is simply unnaceptable, I contacted BT again on Monday but this time they havn't even responded. Unless this issue gets resolved Ofcom will be hearing abouth this. We are paying £25 per month for a service that is about as fast as good old IDSN!

  • Linksys WRT54GL and Airport Extreme dropping connections

In looking through these forums, I realize that people have had problems with their Linksys WRT54G routers and their Airport cards. There seem to be a lot of suggested fixes, but no definitive answer as to what's wrong. I don't know either, and after changing channels, changing Linksys firmware, changing encryption, creating background pings, and all of the recommended solutions, the problem persists. I wanted to document it here in the hopes that someone can figure out what's wrong. Here's a tail of /var/log/system.log during a period when the Mac was having trouble connecting to the Linksys. I don't believe that this is due to Wifi interference or the Linksys, since other machines in the house (a Mac running 10.4.8, but using a Cisco card), for example, don't have these same problems at this time.
Basically, this kind of behavior repeats for a half-hour or so, then settles down for "a while," where a while could be an hour or could be 6 hours, and then it repeats. I have no idea what the problem is, and I suspect it's a problem with the Airport Extreme, rather than with the Linksys. Ideas?

What I am saying is that I have wireless connections to the Ae and I have wired connections to it as well. Both are getting dhcp from the Ae. Both are getting dropped. In the log I am getting these entries, about once per hour...

The 10.0.97.190 is the recently-added OS X Server. Not sure what the port is. But it seems to be doing something untoward.

  • Home share and air play dropping connection on all apple devices !!!

Why is home sharing and air play dropping my connection on AP 1 and AP 2 since the update? This is ridiculous to not be fixed yet or put in place before Lion release

I've been using Home Sharing since it came out. But last night after I had rented a TV show on my iMac Home sharing just wouldn't work from my AppleTV2.
I could see my Mac, select the TV show, but it wouldn't play. Network connectivity was fine. Then I went to my Mac and tried to stop and start HS. It wouldn't authenticate.
Was there a problem on Apple's end?
This morning it appears working? Is yours working now...

  • New iMac wireless keyboard and magic mouse dropping connections

Hi looks like I am just another one who's got problems with Apple's wireless keyboard (KB) and magic mouse (MM).
I bought my iMac 21.5 at the beginning of last Dec. For the first few days, I noticed that the connection between MM and iMac dropped perhaps once a day when I was editing some HD footage in iMove 09. I am rather new to Mac so initially I thought iMove was dominating CPU power hence the temporary drop.
But in the next few days, I found my MM dropped connection a bit more frequently like 3-4 times a day, during word processing, browsing in Safari or even when I am doing nothing. Plus I also noticed that the KB began to have the same problem as well. Well, in all cases the communications resumed almost instantly or shortly after I clicked MM or a button on the KB. It's only the on-screen notices are very annoying....
The situation got worse in the final week of 2010, the connection (both MM and KB) dropped more frequently and sometimes communication didn't resume instantly, instead the Bluetooth Setup Assistant pops up searching for available devices....and then finally connected. Annoyed by this I took the MM to the retailer and swapped for a brand new one (from a boxed iMac), came home and hey! problem solved! but just for a MERE few hours.
On the last day of 2010, after a couple "rounds" of drop-and-reconnect I was hit by the "Bluetooth Not Available" problem after a connection failure. Left it for some moments and no sign of recovery at all! Luckily and ironically I plug in my wired USB Microsoft mouse so that I can still navigate, went to System Preference and found the Bluetooth icon disappeared as if no Bluetooth hardware was ever installed at all! OK, turned off the iMac from the menu, waited and restarted. No joy and scary enough, I can't even get into the system coz I got log-in enabled but without a working KB to enter my password. Without a choice I dug out my netbook PC, arrived in this forum and found I wasn't the only one. Followed instructions here, did a SMC reset, PRAM reset, etc then magically everything is back! Once back in, I deleted the plist, deleted devices, restarted, re-favourite MM and KB, etc. The next day, I use the installation disc to perform a hardware check, but no problem found!
But always a but, the problem still persists, so a call to Apple technical support who suggested literally the same thing I've done above and asked me to monitor the problem in case it needs repair. Honestly, I am not keen to do that as the nearest Apple centre is far from me and always busy. Not sure if anyone here can shed some lights on my problem. I needa ensure all channels are exhausted before I bring the thing back to Apple for an inspection as a last resort...
    Many thanks guys

Hi, I post this because this is very similar to what is happening with my new 27in Imac.
Townsville March 05 2011 bought all singing and all dancing 27inch IMac with wireless KB and MM at new reseller grand opening. Straight forward out of the box. First night a kernal panic message and screen shut down and unable to start. Phonecall to apple care got it restarted with the apleoption+pr keys. Fine for a while, then repeated screen freezes watching eye TV.
Persevered, with similar repeated screen freezes. Reset memory for eye TV. Seemed to fix that problem, but during this time also noticed MM and KB were disappearing and not responding, only to come back by frustratingly turning them on and off, waving them near the imac and even turning the imac off and on manually, to have them come back for a while and even dragging out a cable mouse to navigate. Cut a long story short, I hoped it would sort itself. 20 days later while watching eye tv I noticed the mm and kb drop off. Cable mouse found the BT issue you guys have discussed. System Preferences showed no BT at all. Rang apple care. Went through the same drill and identified a hardware problem with BT which should be replaced, and after discussion about the other issues, suggested a replacement would be within range but to talk to the store, cause it was so new, took it back to store where my story was confirmed in a confirmation of the customers story check.....for a while.....
then all reappeared as if nothing was wrong, fortunately it was witnessed by the store, so off it went to Brisbane for the 4 day turnaround. Wednesday the tech rang BT MM and KB all working fine. Further explained all the above, so he has stress tested it and I am informed it is has displayed none of the bad behaviour and is working well and on its way home, hopefully by monday. So will keep you posted. No new mac offered, no replacement BT module offered.
PS I have only ever owned macs, still love them, and scripting this on my mac book, which incidentally, has never missed a beat.

  • Users randomly dropping connections to Mavericks Server

    Hello,
We recently implemented a new server for a client - a new Mac Mini running 10.9.4 and the latest version of Server (3.1.2), with shares residing on a Promise Pegasus R8 raid (thunderbolt). Prior to this, they had a Mini running 10.8.5 (with Pegasus R6 raid) with no issues. Immediately since implementation of the new server, we have been coming across an intermittent issue, where two different users will lose their connection to the server at very random times. When this happens, it does not happen to both of them - it will be either one user, or the other, but never at the same time. Both of these users are on Macs running 10.9.4 as well. There are other users in their office - some on 10.8.5 and a couple others on 10.9.4, but they do not have the issue. I have also verified that the two users that are having the issue are connected via AFP, not SMB.
On a side note I have noticed that some users (including the two with problems, but also others as well) will have multiple simultaneous connections, shown in the server app/connections, and sometimes from multiple IP addresses (and none of which is their *current* IP address). I have to reiterate that NO problems like this have happened in the past, and no network changes were made (other than an attenuator added to their router shortly after the new server was implemented, though the problems were happening before this). This only started happening with the new server config.
I have combed through logs on both workstations and the server; nothing seems obvious to me, though I am no expert on deciphering logs either. So I am looking for some help, please! They are working on Adobe Creative Cloud files from the server when this happens, and it has caused a few very important files to go corrupt.
If there is any more information I could provide that will be of help, please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Jessica

We have a similar setup with a Mac Mini and a thunderbolt NAS device connected for the shares.  We had users having trouble connecting to the shares and staying connected.  After a while of testing, we found that the issue occurred when using AFP and not when using SMB; we had both enabled as we do have windows computers in the environment.  We have since completely disabled AFP and now everyone has to use SMB which has resolved the issue for us.

When I'm not minimized to copy data from one open browser to the other, I have them maximized. I'll be on one and randomly firefox will switch to the other. Very frustrating. Thanx

Are that windows in the same Firefox instance or do you have multiple Firefox instances open with separate profiles by using the -no-remote command line switch?

Is there any permanent solution for this?
My domain server is windows server 2008 r2.
    Thanks,

I am still having issues. I have removed all the WiFi routers from the network except few access points for our Motorola mobile scanners. Pc's are getting disconnected from the network randomly and see the result of ipconfig /all from one of the affected

  • SOLVED: Dropped connections with Time Capsule and cable modem/router

I've been dealing with random dropped connections for quite a while and I thought that it would be useful to share what I've found.
I was having a very puzzling problem where my internet connection would drop randomly on wireless devices. On my laptop, webpages would suddenly become unresponsive for a minute or two, Mail would have connection problems and complain, etc...but incredibly randomly and definitely not repeatable or in any pattern that I noticed.
I also have 2 Nest thermostats in the house which connect via wi-fi. I noticed that they would randomly show Offline very often when viewed from a webpage or iPhone app, but the Nest front panels showed that they were connected with a strong signal.
As I said, the dropped connections were very sporadic. Most of the time, everything worked, but every once in a while...bam.
I worked with the level 3 tech support guys at Nest for over a week to figure out what was going on. We went through settings on my router and Time Capsule and everything seemed proper and okay. I even replaced the Nests with new ones but still had the same problem. We were all completely stumped.
Yesterday, my laptop dropped it's connection at the same time my wife's laptop dropped hers. At this point, I wondered if something was wrong with the Time Capsule or maybe my internet provider.
I called AppleCare to see if they could help with debugging the problem. They passed me up to a senior wi-fi tech and he asked me many questions about the configuration of my network. My home network looked like this yesterday (see crappy diagram below)
                                                         Motorola Cable modem/router
                                                                                 |
                                                           Netgear multiport switch
                                                          |          |         |         |          |
                                                         hardwired Macs,            TimeCapsule (bridge mode)
                                                         laser printers,                   |   |   |   |   |
                                                          Apple TVs                       laptops, Nest, iphones
This configuration seemed correct to me. The Time Capsule in bridge mode would mean that the cable modem/router would be handling DHCP so all the devices would be on the same network and I could print from a laptop to one of my printers and the laptops could connect to the hardwired Macs, etc..
The AppleCare technician said he thought that bridge mode was the problem. He mentioned that there was a known issue that in this configuration, the IP addresses could get lost between the cable modem/router and the Time Capsule. He said it would be best if the Time Capsule was in DHCP/NAT mode and the first device before the switch, this way the Time Capsule was the only device passing out IP addresses.
So I repatched my network like this:
                                                       Motorola Cable modem/router
                                                                                 |
                                                       TimeCapsule (DHCP/NAT mode)
                                                                |                                       |   |   |   |   |
Netgear multipart switch                      laptops, Nest, iphones
                                             |         |         |        |
                                               hardwired Macs,
                                                 laser printers,
                                                   Apple TVs
I can tell you that in the past 24 hours, I haven't seen anything lose a connection. Not even the Nests which seemed be on and off all the time. And, in this configuration, all the devices are on the same network and able to speak to each other.
    I hope that helps someone.

So you're saying that Bridge Mode not functioning properly is a well known issue?
Not to me.. I have not had issues with the TC in bridge. And it is my prefered setup. I think it is better as a wireless AP and network hard disk than a router any day of the week.. but there are other ways to skin the cat if it is proving unreliable. I am at the moment using a wireless bridge from the Gen4 TC to a Gen4 AE upstairs for TV internet streaming.. it started off very reliable.. but of late I guess I need to reboot it every few days. And it has required a full reset two or three times.. although I probably need to take some of the blame for those. I am not over worried.. i do not believe in wireless bridges except for the most interim of arrangements.. it will be wired in ethernet ASAP.
Wireless should always be used in a way that respects its status as voodoo.. not stable technology. NOT SCIENCE.. it is more a bag of beads and rattles.
Is there a way to change the cable modem/router to avoid the double NAT problem?
The answer to this may depend on your ISP. Did they provide the modem? If so they may lock it down so you have no control. But normally a Motorola cable modem will not have a bridge mode as such but will have a method of turning off NAT.. (and wireless).. this amounts to the same thing.
Once you turn off NAT.. you need to power cycle the modem so the TC gets the public IP in router mode. The power cycle time might be 5min or 20min or overnight.. it again depends on your ISP.. but you need to stop the modem capturing the public IP so it can be passed to the modem.
Depending on where you are in the world.. US is most concentration of cable network.. you can go out and buy your own modem. Pick one on your ISP list and steer clear of SB.. at least with the apple routers they are problematic.
It also can be a case that the cable modem is SB model and therefore more problematic. Sorry I have forgotten the recommendation for what to buy. There are a number of posts here about it but search is terrible now. (or I am too old to figure it out). I will get Bob to poke his nose in and tell you what works for him.

Restore iPhone with current iTunes on computer. If after Restore WiFi is still not working, then the WiFi chip or its connection to the logic board is faulty, and there is no fix.

  • LaserJet Pro P1102w dropping connection

I hope someone can help. We have been having a long term issue with our HP LaserJet Pro P1102w wifi printer keeping a stable connection to our network. It connects to our network via wifi. It is in a high signal wifi area of the office.
In the printer network settings I have tried setting the printers IP as static and also tried it as dynamic being assigned by our DHCP server.
The problem is the printer keeps randomly dropping connection in that we can no longer print to the printer / access the printers webpage or ping the printer. The problems is fixed by either powering down and restarting the printer or if you leave the printer after a period of time the printer will once again be contactable (by doing nothing).
I have updated the printers firmware, computers printer drivers. Checked network settings but just cannot resolve the issue.
    It's driving me crazy!

    Thanks for the clarification Angus,
Try disabling the Auto Off feature, this current configuration actually turns the printer Off after 5 minutes idle (Any key pressing will turn the printer On, but any remote command as printing or accessing the printer page will fail..
You may enter the EWS by entering the printer IP through Safari.
    Enter the Settings tab.
Select Print Settings and turn the Auto Off after as Never.
Click Apply and reboot the device, then check for any change.
Now reboot the device and check for any chnage,
    Shlomi
