Firefox 3.6.12 is my default browser but I have to use Internet Explorer 8 to get on to the Internet first. Can you help?

My laptop is Acer Aspire 5101 running Windows XP. I also find Firefox "freezes" and I have no alternative but to switch off computer. Then I find "firefox.exe not responding" and Windows has to "end program".

hello, normally such connection issues are caused by a firewall/security software which doesn't recognize & therefore blocks new firefox versions: [[Fix problems connecting to websites after updating Firefox]]

I am using firefox 4.0 and evertime i open the program it asks if it wants to be my default web browser. Firefox is and always will be my default browser. I have tried the options in the firefox support area but it still hasn't made a difference

• The firefox page constantly says "Connecting" and will not load any websites. I've also updated the firefox software via internet explorer with the same reslults can you help?

Internet explorer works perfectly and firefox will not load any websites

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in [[Safe mode]]:
* Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
* Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

• Hello, I used to have an add-on that would make my browser save my online banking login info..which browsers usually don't..so it forced Firefox to do it. I cannot remember the name though, can you help me?

The banking sites usually prevent log-info from being saved, but there was a way around it..
i want to save them on my computer just like any other passwords..
i forgot the name and address of that add-on

you can use Lastpass Password Manager, its Safe and Free :)

• Been having proplems with the facebook since I upgraded the Firefox 4 from beta to the full version, Can you help?

Facebook search bar and the videos doesn't work with the new version of Firefox and the lists just directs to another page instead of poping up, for example the notifications list just jumps to the notifications page instead of showing them in a tab list.

cor-el, thank you for your reply.
I tried disabling all add-ons and resetting all user preferences but it didn't fix the problem. So I tried your second recommendation. And when I booted Firefox with the new Profile everything was OK. I added my add-ons and they worked great. The only problem was that if I closed Firefox the new profile I created disappeared. The old, corrupt profile was still there but the new one wasn't. In the end I even deleted the old, default profile. This only made the matter worse. Every newely created profile would still disapeare if I closed Firefox and without a profile Firefox wouldn't start, saying that it is already running in the background and that I should stop the process or reboot my PC. Needless to say there was no firefox.exe process running in the background and even rebooting wouldn't make Firefox start. Well not knowing what to do next I did a compete uninstall of Firefox, rebooted my PC and installed a fresh copy of Firefox 3.6.9. I imported my bookmarks and added my add-ons and (for now) everything works as it should.
Thank you again for your effort.

• I used Firefox to download a digital certificate. I later learned that the provider doesn't support Firefox for Mac, and I can't find the certificate. Can you help?

• We cannot download Firefox. It does not allow us to download as Current User and instead insists we run as Administrator and we do not know the password. Can you help?

If we try to continue as Current User by selecting that button, nothing happens. If we try as Administrator we cannot provide the password and so we fail both ways.

• Clicking on a link does not open firefox and take me to the page when firefox is my default browser but does when Internet Explorer is my default browser, what is wrong?

All of a sudden (I think after the last firefox update) links in other web pages won't open firefox to access the page when firefox is my default browser but works when I change my default browser to Internet Explorer and I can't figure out why. Help!!!

This problem just arose for me today. Very frustrating. Tried all of the suggestions here without success. Then a very simple solution came to me:
UNINSTALL CHROME. I haven't used Chrome for a long while anyway since it seems to have chronic problems of one sort or another. Firefox does 95% of what I need, and Internet Explorer can handle the other 5%.
After uninstalling Chrome I clicked a mailto link. It asked me what program to use and did not list Firefox as an option for some reason. In the Tools menu, I chose "Options" and went to the "Applications" tab. Searched for "mailto". There was a single entry - when Chrome was installed it gave me no options to switch. After uninstalling Chrome I was able to change that. It still did not list Firefox, but it did list "Gmail". Selecting that causes my Gmail to open in Firefox.
I have no idea whether Google or Microsoft is responsible for this, but I'm inclined to give the hairy eyeball to Google for this one. It's the sort of stunt they'd pull on Microsoft, then pretend it was just a mistake. Just one guy's opinion, of course.

Firefox is set as the default browser, but if I click a link in MS Word, the link is opened with MS Internet explorer. Why?

What version of Windows and Office is it? I had this issue with an older version of office and Windows XP. Basically, MS are using their browser (IE) because it's their software (MS Office). If you go to options in MS word though, you should be able to find an option to set the default browser to open links.

• Firefox will not set as my default browser? My desktop icon only allows me to open Firefox as an administrator? My family's Firefox accounts work fine. I have 3 other accounts have parental controls. Would that have an effect? in English

* Firefox will not set as my default browser, regardless of setting the option?
* My desktop icon only allows me to open Firefox as an administrator, while my family's Firefox icons are accessible?
* The 3 other accounts have parental controls and was wondering if that would have an effect?

OK, I think I have this solved. After reading my post over, I decided to rethink the problem. First thing I did was download Chrome and I tried using that and IE again and surprise! I was having the same problem on those browsers as well. So now we know it wasn't Firefox. I then figured maybe a slow computer meant a virus, so I ran scans. I've had both Avast and IOBit for months now and I've never had a problem with either of them before. Then I downloaded Malwarebytes and ran a third scan. They all picked some stuff up, but nothing serious. Then I tried disabling all the antivirus stuff and that didn't solve anything. But then I decided to keep Malwarebytes and I uninstalled IOBit Security and whammo - problem solved.
I have no idea why out of the blue IOBit would be causing a problem like this so if someone knows, please let me in on the secret. Additionally, IE was working fairly well last night but not this morning. I also don't know why removing IOBit would take care of the nsAppShell issue, because supposedly, that's related to Firefox plug ins. And one more thing...when Comcast hooked my neighbor up to cable, they did it by putting a splitter on my line. They were messing about with the lines yesterday before I got on my computer last night trying to decide how to rerun them and today they did that, taking the splitter off my line and giving my neighbor his own line. That was finished about 30 minutes before I uninstalled IOBit. So....who knows?
But I ain't about to look a gift horse in the mouth. I have my Firefox back and I am so sorry for bad mouthing you last night - I love you, Firefox!

• I use Firefox as my default browser but, on any site, keep getting some words underlined in green from which an ad pops up. Really peeing me off! Doesn't happen on IE or Chrome. How can I stop this?

I use Firefox as my default browser but, on any site, keep getting some words underlined in green from which an ad pops up. Really peeing me off! Doesn't happen on IE or Chrome. How can I stop this?

From what you have described, I don't think you are ever going to pick that up as malware at all. But I did look at the site you mentioned in Google Chrome, and in IE9. First thought was maybe Chrome suppresses it, but that would be contrary to trying to convince you that their AdSense or IntelliTXT is "helping" you.
What I did find in Chrome was
"Google Chrome's connection attempt to ad-apac.doubleclick.net was rejected. The website may be down, or your network may not be properly configured."
Since I don't have ad blockers in Chrome or IE, that tells me that my hosts file is doing its job, you can draw you own conclusions. There is something similar displayed in IE, but I can't read what was there because the font-size was too big. for the space. In Firefox with "Adblock Plus" extension it is all wiped out. The hosts file works across the entire system but is directed at blocking malware sites more than advertising. "Adblock Plus" is very good at blocking ads and can do its blocking with more generic filters, and can block a lot of malware from coming in but it can't block at the system level that a hosts file can.
In IE although I can only see "It appea" because the font is too large and text does not wrap it does actually say "It appears you are connected to the Internet, but you might want to try to reconnect to the Internet."
I would certainly suggest installing "Adblock Plus" extension and the "Easylist (USA)" filter subscription -- links are in the links previously provided, and installing the hosts file as well also in the links.
It takes a bit more work to install and maintain a hosts file but the directions should be clear enough.

Hi mcclausky, you may need to manually remove a policy setting from the registry. You also should scan for malware that might have created this problem.
This article lists scanning and cleaning tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
To check your Windows registry for policy settings that might affect Firefox or other programs, I suggest consulting a Windows forum or Microsoft's forums. For example:

I just double click on the Icon, and it seems it takes forever to load.
After this action, an error message comes up with a statement that it is trying to read some sort of script. Next it tells me to press continue to go ahead. At this time, it loads up normally. Can you help?

This issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
