Firefox 3.6.12 is painfully slow
Running Windows XP home edition on Asus netbook. All add-ons are disabled except for McAfee site advisor. IE is working with great response time, so it's not FiOS.
I am running Firefox 3.6.12. It's been like this since the last update.
Please, I need firefox! I hate IE!
It's been one thing after another with FF lately. Even when typing this post, the cursor gets stuck/characters do not appear. WTF?

When using Calc Manager in script mode to edit Planning business rules, it is painfully slow. Just making one small change may take several minutes to save and move on to another line in the script to edit. Our business rules are very large (some are thousands of lines) and complicated. We never had this problem in the old Business Rules. Also does not matter what browser we are using, IE9, Firefox, etc. as it is painfully slow to make even simple changes in the script editor. Has anyone experienced this and any ideas on how to correct?
What version are you using?
In any version prior to 11.1.2.3.502, the recommended number of lines is only 500 per script.
You may want to split your code in to multiple script components.

Ever since updating to latest version of Firefox it has been painfully slow on my Mac running OS 10.5.8.
Websites just hang, and never get to where they are supposed to go. The status loop on tabs just spins and spins but never loads the site. Go to the same site on Safari and there in a second. It is like dial up slow. Have tried all the troubleshooting tips(reset, delete/re-create profiles, uninstall/reinstall, updated flash) nothing works.

Why is Firefox Painfully Slow After Upgrade?
Ever since Firefox went from version 3 to version 4 it has gotten worse and worse! I kept upgrading up to version 6 hoping it would somehow get better, but it has not! It was SO painfully slow that it would bring my whole system to a screeching halt. I am a long-time Firefox user and have promoted it to everyone who's still stuck in IE - but now I myself have switched to Google Chrome just because it WORKS and works FAST! Please, whatever you have to do to make Firefox work as fast as it used to - please fix this problem!! I've just downgraded back to version 3 just so I can use Firefox for some web development I need to do using Firebug...
I run very few or no extensions with the exception of Java and Flash. I never, '''NEVER''' use stupid toolbars. The problem with FireFox on OS X Lion seems to be related to the OS. The speed of my Internet connection never changed and it continues to be fast for all of my computers, both Mac and Windoze 7.
If you change your default DNS on the Mac to something like the IP address of the Google DNS servers, FireFox and Chrome will run at normal speeds. If anyone needs help with this, please post another message and I will post instructions. -
one secure website loads painfully slow (7 minutes !). Only this site. How can I streamline firefox to load these pages faster? This started happening only after I switched from McAffee to Norton Security Suite. Other secure sites load just fine.

XP computer painfully slow when latest Firefox is installed
I have a win vista computer which has worked for years and run Firefox fine, Two weeks ago I upgraded firefox as usual and Firefox became painfully slow. A nerdy friend tried reloading the latest Firefox and concluded Firefox was much slower than Explorer or than Opera. My wife is very unhappy. What do I do now?

Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.

Firefox 17 painfully slow on new laptop
I have a brand new laptop running Windows 7 64 bit. Firefox 17 is running very very slow. IE9 runs perfectly fine. Speedtest.net results using IE averages 13MB download speeds; using Firefox averages 2.5MB.
Is there a known compatibility issue with Windows 7 64 bit or something? I love Firefox and want to use it over IE, so I'm hoping there's a fix.
By the way, I tried a couple of tweeks that I found online, but they didn't seem to help or hurt the problem.Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Try to disable "Use advanced process monitoring" in the F-Secure Deepguard settings.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps. -
Safari painfully slow on new Mac Mini
I know there have been a number of threads on this topic and I have tried all of the tricks listed but Safari is still painfully slow to load web pages. I have tested my internet connection and it is fine. The real interesting thing here is that when I boot up under Windows (using Boot Camp) web pages load blazingly fast under IE, so it seems unlikely that I have a hardware problem. I have also tried Firefox with similar results. I love this new machine but I am pulling my hair out over its browsing performance.

PAINFULLY slow- can take 4 min to infinity to change tabs!
I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro (original unibody MBP) that's running PAINFULLY slow! I used to be able to run 2 browsers with 15 tabs each, Photoshop, and word all at once. Over the last couple months, I can have as little as a browser with a few tabs and it grinds to a halt. I can simply click on a tab, or on a drop down menu, and I'll get the spinning beach ball for 4 or 5 minutes. Even cmd-opt-esc is unresponsive. Then, minutes later, it'll instantly execute anything I commanded over the last several minutes. Firefox seems to be the worst offender, but it can happen no matter what's running. It can happen immediately after rebooting, too (I used to only have to reboot every few weeks, now it's several times per day)
CPU load is 98% idle after it catches up, but once it catches up and the graph refreshes and I can see it was about 60% user load and 15% system while it was choking on the monumental task of opening the "File" drop-down menu

This is the original unibody Mac with 2.4 ghz core 2 duo. It's been upgraded with 4GB of ram (2.7 used) and a 1TB hard drive. I did those upgrades 2 years ago and they've worked fine until recently. Clicking "get info" on the HD says 333 GB are free, but under "about this mac" it says 121 GB are free and 211 are used for "backup". I'm running OS-X 10.9.2 and it says there are no updates to install.

Wi-fi painfully slow on macbook pro in OSX 10.8.2
I have a Mac Book pro and over the last two days my internet has turned painfully slow on wifi - i havent loaded any new programmes and Speedtest shows no problems, still 37mbps on fiber broadband, my iPhone and PC are fine on the same wireless connection and Ethernet is perfect!!
I have tried resetting Safari and Firefox in preferences, clearing history and cookies, resetting DHCP, even using the setting 8.8.8.8. DNS server, and changing wireless channels, resetting the router, as well as running MacScan. I see people talking about turning off IPv6 but im on OS X 10.8.2 and off is not an option I have Automatic, manual and Link-manual only, i have tried all these to no joy still web pages just take ages to load :-( Any ideas?Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Macbook Pro running painfully slow

I'm working on a MacBook Pro that's suddenly started to run painfully slow. I've repaired permissions, reset the PRAM, updated everything to Mavericks, and even though it might be running slightly faster, I'm still encountering the pinwheel every time I start anything up or really try to click on anything. Hey everyone. I am writing about my 13 inch Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Recently it has been extremely slow and on occasion has not started up.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC already, yet it is still very slow. I have a couple theories about what might have caused it, are they plausible?
Theory 1: It’s a software problem. I tried to upgrade to 10.8.2 but halfway through the upgrade the computer restarted and somehow I was still on 10.8.1. For fear of a big issue happening I didn’t try to upgrade again. Perhaps it is a flaw in Apple’s software update?
The important thing to note about this update is that I tried to install 10.8.2 around a month or two weeks BEFORE I started having problems. So if these issues were due to 10.8.2’s failed update then it certainly was a delayed reaction.
I would of course like to update to 10.8.2 BUT as my computer is acting EXTREMELY slow and having trouble turning on occasionally I am worried the software update will completely brick the machine. Is that possible? Should I actually finish through with the software update?
Theory 2: It was an electricity problem.
The computer died when I was sitting at a café plugged into their wall sockets. A few days later when I came back to the same spot with my old macbook which is now being used in lieu of the Air it suddenly turned black for a little while. Sensing it might be an electricity surge or something with their system I unplugged the cable. I am not sure if that was paranoia though.
Can an electricity surge or a bad outlet fry a computer? Can it fry the ram so the computer is extremely slow? Does that theory hold any water?

Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:

I pulled this part out of one of the topics Barney-15E linked to. It absolutely works! The glacially slow Finder response has been driving me batty in Mavericks. Each time I restarted, it would take forever to list the startup drive when I opened it. Open and Save dialogues were also painfully slow to respond. Now they all snap open and list instantly. I used TextWrangler to comment out the line in the file auto_master, then ran the automount command in Terminal.
Working workaround:
Use the following statements in Terminal.
sudo vi /etc/auto_master
In this file comment out /net with # (#/net .....)
sudo automount -vc
Fixed.

(1) Some folks may be more comfortable using a GUI editor like TextWrangler instead of vi
a) in the Finder use the GO menu and select Go to Folder
b) type '/etc' ( without single quotes ) in the Go to folder dialog box and press the Go button
c) Right ( Control ) click the auto_master file in the resulting Finder window. Select "Open with...." and use TextWrangler ( your choice )
d) Comment out the line by inserting a '#' ( pound sign ) as noted in Snaggletooth_DE's instructions
e) Save the file ( probably need to authenticate with your admin password )
f) Do the 'sudo automount -vc' per Snaggletooth_DE's instructions. Will need to authenticate again.
(2) Notice Snaggletooth_DE described this as a "workaround" because it bypasses an Apple bug. Presumably most people have not changed their auto_master file and it worked fine in Mountain Lion and prior. In other words: If you haven't done so already, please continue to submit feedback and bug reports to Apple for this issue.
Kudos to Snaggletooth_DE for figuring out code is trying to look at network ( NFS ) volumes that maybe don't exist. -

ITunes 9.2.1 iPad painfully slow, iPhone 4 fine
Ever since I updated to version 9.2.1 the backup time for my iPad is painfully slow.
I ran a backup on my iPhone4 and it took about 5 minutes for a full backup and sync. So I ran downstairs, grabbed an adult beverage from the fridge, started working on my mac mini. After 60 minutes I went to grab some info off the iPad and it's still backing up an hour later.
System:
iPhone & iPad sync to a Windows 7 PC.
(Trust me if i could migrate without having to wipe my phone and iPad settings they would be on the mac mini)
I've rebooted my PC and iPad several times with no luck.
This has been running perfectly fine with iTunes 9.2.Requirements to install iOS 4.2.1, this is from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1061
