Firefox 3.6.3 & .4 uses 100% CPU and won't always close or open
Firefox intermittently uses 100% of CPU and I have to manually turn off the computer. Firefox also does not start or finiosh correctly, the process is alive and I have to use Task Manager to end the process In the meantime I have installed IE7, as I cannot access internet banking with Firefox. Very disappointing as I have ben an enthusiastic user and promoter of FF.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== After upgrading to 3.6.3, and is no better with 3.6.4, despite deleting all add-ons
I also have this problem which has been getting worse with recent successive updates of Firefox. As a long-time user and advocate, I am about ready to look for an alternative browser. Firefox will not close and exit properly, requiring direct cancellation through Task Manager; starts up very slowly (often 1 to 2 minutes); and frequently locks up the CPU with 100% of cycles while doing NOTHING; offers to restart crashed sessions, but cannot recover and reload those sessions; will not operate correctly while any other application accesses the internet, like uTorrent. Firefox is set to delete cookies, etc. whenever the session closes, sqlite database is vacuumed regularly, CCleaner regularly wipes remaining accretions, and disk is defragged. Currently running 3.5.5 but will NOT upgrade until this problem is solved since later builds report the same problems. I know several other users who have experienced the same problem and I can no longer automatically recommend Firefox to users and clients. Is anybody paying any attention to this problem? What is being done to address this fault? Why is there no response to the original poster? Is this really a support forum or just a way to preoccupy and distract the users who suffer this malfunction? Wireless 54Mbps connection. No Adobe Flash, QuickTime, MS Silverlight, etc. installed on this machine. Firefox 3.5.5 with the following add-ons:

CF4.5 uses 100% CPU and hangs
Hello,
According to the ColdFusion Forums my problem is not a new one but I still want
to post it with the hope to get some kind of answer.
I'm are running the following system:
CF 4.5 Enterprise Server
SiteMinder 6.0
IIS 5.0
MS SqlServer 2005
Both the CF and database server are Win2000 SP4.
About every one hours the CF server uses 100% CPU and from than on it is
impossible to log into the application. The site is still available though.
After restarting the CF service everything works fine until.....
I do not know what triggers this but I suspect it has something to do with
SiteMinder and logging onto the application.
The site has to go live on Monday so you can imagine the pressure to get
this fixed before the weekend.
Greetings,
JilaniJilani, you mention that this seems connected to SiteMinder. Do you mean you have your own version of SiteMinder, separate from the built-in one that came with CF 4 and 5? I wonder if there could be a conflict between them. Why are you using the full SiteMinder? And do you really need it?
More curious is that you say this spike happens every hour. Can you confirm if it's every 67 minutes, specifically? If so, then I would assert that this could be a problem related to the client variable purge process, which I discuss here:
http://www.carehart.org/blog/client/index.cfm/2006/10/4/bots_and_spiders_and_poor_CF_perfo rmance
But that may not be the issue if simply enabling/disabling the siteminder service will immediately recreate your problem....unless somehow the DB used by SiteMinder is the same DB used for client variables. Do you have any datasources listed in the CF Admin page for client variables? Any chance there's a connection between them and siteminder?
/charlie
PS This whole issue of client variables and how they can hurt you unexpectedly is something I'll dicuss this Thursday at noon US EDT, when I present "Clients and Sessions and Crashes, Oh My", to the online ColdFusion Meetup: www.coldfusionmeeetup.com. -
ITunes will uses 100% cpu and will not close in OSX Lion
When I start up iTunes, after a few minutes, the fan kicks on and Activity Monitor shows that it is using 100% CPU. The fan kicks up and the MBP gets warm. I have to force close to get it to shut down. iTunes match is constantly running, so maybe that has something to do with it?
I'm not running it in Mini Player mode or anything like that, so I'm not sure what's causing the problem. Any thoughts on how to diagnose it?I also have this problem which has been getting worse with recent successive updates of Firefox. IPhoto uses 100% CPU and crashes after some time even when idle
Hi
I need some help with iPhoto. It consistently crashes after running for sometime even if left idle over night. Following advice from the community, I've done the following so far:
Repaired Permissions
Fix Library
Rebuild Library
Disable All email accounts
Disable Photostream
Disable iTune sharing for the Apple TV
Remove ~\Library\Preferences\com.apple.iPhoto* preferences
Remove \Library\Cache\com.apple.iPhoto
Restarted in Safe mode (to solve another issue)
I'm using Mac OS X 10.8.2 (12C60) and iPhoto v9.4.1 (701.67), and the crash report is below.
Any suggestions for additional steps, will be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone seen the CC Desktop use 100% CPU and show spinning bars on Apps tab?
Yesterday I subscribed to creative cloud. I installed the Creative Cloud Desktop but when I go to the 'Apps' tab all I get are the progress bars constantly rotating. I let it do this for over half an hour but nothing changed. I can see that the Creative Cloud Task is running at over 100%. I am using it on iMac running OS X Mavericks

[SOLVED] systemd-udevd using 100% CPU and monitors go to sleep on boot
Hi,
Turned my PC on this morning to find an issue with the monitors going to sleep immediately after booting. The boot process is usually slim autologin to a cinnamon session. I can see as far as entering my LUKS passphrase, followed by a few additional lines, followed by blank monitors and monitors entering power saving mode.
Booting with nomodeset on the kernel command line allows me to boot to a terminal and I can login etc, but obviously X doesn't start. I'm using xf86-video-ati drivers.
When booting with KMS enabled I also have a runaway systemd-udevd process which is thrashing my processor and I'm unable to kill it (I've tried kill -9 and still it persists).
The PC was working fine when I shut it down last night. No updates have been performed since, and no configuration changes have been made. I did notice that the power management dialog in the settings failed to open though.
Any suggestions would be welcome please, as I've now lost half a day trying to get this resolved.
TIA
X.
Edit: I've also tried downgrading xserver to 1.15, xf86-video-ati and the associated dependencies with no change.
Edit2: I've also disabled slim and rebooted and the same thing happens - so I don't believe it's an issue with X but with KMS.
Edit3: Booting with acpi=off on the kernel command line also fails with the same result.
Last edited by xanthi (2014-07-30 13:55:58)Turned out to be an issue with libdrm. Apparently I had run some updates yesterday before shutting down, but they didn't appear in pacman.log; instead I found them by looking in the pacman package cache and found:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 110072 Jul 29 22:59 lib32-libdrm-2.4.56-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 160996 Jul 29 22:55 libdrm-2.4.56-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
Downgraded [lib32-]libdrm packages to 2.4.54-1, rebooted, and success. -
Mail.app using 80% CPU and won't quit - any ideas?
Hi, I'll try and cut a short story shorter...
I tried to begin using Mail.app last night instead of Entourage and Thunderbird just to see what it was like. Having never used mail.app before, I use the bundled import wizard to retrieve the settings from the Entourage account (POP, wifes ISP account) which seemed to work ok. I didn't test at this point as I have another account (POP again, my gMail) stored on Thunderbird which I also wanted to import.
To import the mailboxs from Thunderbird I copied the relevant folders from the ~\Library...\myprofile\... folder to the desktop and added the .mbox extension. Then used the import wizard 'other' option to bring them in.
All seemed to go ok. I recreated my 'other' account manually and sent/received some test mails etc. then marked everyting in all mailboxes as read.
At this point the laptop went very slow so I checked Activity Viewer - this showed Mail.app hovering between 70% - 80%. I thought this was a bit odd so I tried to Quit Mail, but it just hung. I then force quit and the CPU calms down.
I opened Mail again and it was ok for about 3 minutes until I try to view various mailboxes. Mail is still responsive but the mailboxes are empty! I use the rebuild function and they show the messages again, unless I look at a different one and then go back to the rebuilt mailbox - it's empty again.
Then the CPU/won't quit happened again. CPU is up at the same levels, Mail.app has 7 threads. I thought there may be some indexing going on so I went to bed. I got up this morning to find the G4 fans going crazy and CPU still consuming the CPU?
Any ideas?
I'm thinking I may trash both accounts and rebuild from scratch tonight.Hi Ian.
Aside from whatever the problem is here (which I don't really know), you shouldn't add an .mbox extension to mbox files in order to import them into Mail. Mail uses that extension for something else. Also, you'd get better results using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion. -
Finder and loginwindow use 100% cpu with 10.6.8
I recently installed the patch to OS X 10.6.8 and now the finder is very unstable and uses 100% cpu and the loginwindow uses 100% cpu also. Yes I have Parallels 6 on this machine but I already "un-checked" the "show windows applications in doc" option which is the recommended solution. However, this did not fix the problem. I do not know how to determine what actual process is causing this finder / loginwindow issue. I very much appreciate if anyone has suggestion how to fix this problem.
This is on a mid-2011 MacBookPro.
thank you.TBauer, I had the same problem with 10.6.8 using 100% of the CPU with Parallels 6 installed. The following steps solved this problem for me:
0. Take a screen shot of your Dock if you wish to remember it as currently set
1. Launch Activity Monitor and click on the CPU column so you can see Dock using the CPU
2. Move ///Users/ ... /Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist to the trash
3. Click on Dock and click on Quit Process to stop the Dock
OS X will then rebuild the default Dock
4. Put the items back in the Dock that you want
That solved the problem for me yesterday morning. I've launched Parallels 6 several times now and moved the machine from my work network to home and the 100% CPU problem hasn't returned.
Hope that works for you, too!
I don't think using the combo updater will solve the problem. The problem appears to be a .plist that is generated with OS X 10.6.7 and earlier that contains icons of a larger than Apple documented size causes the CPU looping. Rebuilding the dock.plist under OS X 10.6.8 appears to solve the problem.
Parallels has issued a knowledge bulletin saying they are looking into the problem. On their web site they have another approach involving moving the offending icon out of the dock to solve the problem. I like my solution better but theirs works, too. -
Thunderbird using 100% CPU?
I have Thunderbird 3.1.10 on a Macbook usng OSX Lion and Thunderbird has started using 100% CPU and causing the fan to run and tax the overall system. Unfortunately I use Mail for my stuff and Thunderbird is used for all my wife's e-mail so we can't really migrate over to Mail. Anyone run in to this before and find a succesful solution?

Elements 10 Playback uses 100% CPU 0% GPU
When I play back a video clip in the Elements 10 environment the video is choppy and my system is using 100% CPU and 0% GPU. When I play back the same files in Sony PMB the CPU runs at about 15% and the GPU runs at about 50%.
Is there a way to get Elements 10 to use the GPU?
System Specs:
Windows Vista SP2
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+ 2.8GHz
3 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Video Files are 1080i 5.1 m2ts.
I am using the trail software now and will buy if I can get it working.
Thanks!Certainly when rendering PRE uses as much of the processor capacity as possible (somewhere in these forums I posted a screen shot showing all my four cores at 100%).
But in normal use I don't notice it hogging all processor power. I wonder if you have selected the right project setting for your video.
What Sony camera are you using?
What format did you record the video in?
How did you get the clips onto your PC?
What project setting did you use when you created your project?
Do you see red lines across the top of the timeline when you first add your video to the timeline?
As you edit your clips the timeline will show red lines - to perform a render press [Enter] and wait for the lines to go green.
Are you using still images in the project? What pixel dimensions are they?

Internet browsing uses 100% cpu
Hello everybody.
This situation has driven me crazy the last 4 months and till now i have not figure it out.
Everytime i have a video streaming in my computer, CPU usage goes to 100%. It happens every time, either using internet explorer or Firefox or Google chrome. Even when i have a skype video call or a gtalk video call. Some description of each one:
Using internet explorer: While i am watching a youtube video, CPU limits up to 100% after 1 minute or sometime 5 minutes. I am not able to watch a 15min video. Internet explorer process uses 100%CPU. When i kill it via task manager, another instance of IE
appears with the same CPU usage. I also kill it and then 4 or 5 instances of rundll32.exe appear consuming 100CPU. If i kill them, explorer.exe uses 100% of cpu. If i do nothing and just wait, CPU is 100% for two hours. If i just kill only IE instances, taskmngr.exe
is consuming 40-50% of CPU for 1-2 minutes, then other processes like conhost or csrss consumes the same amount of CPU and after 4-5 minutes everything comes back to normal. That's the story everytime i use IE 11.0.9600.16518
Using Firefox: While video streaming, flash player process consumes all CPU. When i kill it, the same behaviour described above occurs.
Using Google Chrome: When i run it, 5-6 instances of google chrome appear in task manager and after some time this browser also hungs with 100CPU.
All above are also happening while i run Skype either i have a video call or just text messaging. Sometimes svchost is 25-30 % and system hungs.
Operating system is Windows 7 home premium 64bit with SP1, my graphics card is NVidia Gforce GT 230M (latest drivers 20% when these situations occur, my system is extremely slow and whatever i do, it limits up CPU usage.
Any assistance is acceptable. Thanks for the patience.Hi,
First, I would suggest that you reduce the hardware acceleration on the computer and check if it helps.
a. Open Screen Resolution by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, clicking Adjust screen resolution.
b. Click Advanced Settings, click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings.
c. Note that some video card drivers do not permit you to change settings.
d. Move the Hardware acceleration slider toward None to reduce or turn off video hardware acceleration.
This issue can be caused by confliction from one of the background programs or add-ons.
You may use Process explorer as Milos mentioned to find the root cause to fix the issue:
Process explorer:

You can follow the references below to troubleshoot the issue:
1. 3RD part app: Remove to check the issue
2. Drivers: Update or install compatible version
3. System process/service: Upload the log file for analyzing.
I also would like to suggest you use Windows Performance Recorder to check the issue:

Discoveryd process uses 100% CPU - Safari Can't find the server
Hello
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I lose connection to the internet 2 or 3 times a day. (Outlook goes offline at the same time)
This is with a wired connection. (Wi-Fi is turned off)
Safari gives me the "Safari Can't Find the Server" message.
Restarting the computer solves the issue temporarily.
While I'm unable to connect to the internet, Activity Monitor shows a process named "discoveryd" that uses 100% CPU.
Force quitting this process gives me back access to the internet instantly. Unfortunately, I suffered a kernel panic (auto restart) a few minutes after force quitting discoveryd. I'm not 100% sure those 2 are related but it would be an odd coincidence as I never experienced had a single kernel on that system. Haven't tried force quitting that process since.
I'm using this iMac in a work environment. (Connected to a windows file server and exchange)
This issue has been happening 2-3 times a day since the day I upgraded to Yosemite.
Any pointers on what could fix this issue ?

New DVD writer on Satellite M40-193 uses 100% CPU
Hello anyone,
recently I have replaced my DVD-writer with a new one. My laptop is a Satellite M40-193 (PSM40E-06M026IT) and the original drive is a Mat****a UJ-831B. I have replaced it with a Sony-Nec Optiarc AD-7633A because I like the slot-in feature and the Labelflash feature.
Unfortunately it makes me a problem. It will use 100% CPU every time I use it. I cannot figure out the problem. Is there anyone who can help me? It is a software problem or hardware?
Thank you. After six days this is the only help I can get on this forum: "...this optical disc drive is compatible with your notebook model?".
The ATA communication bus is a standard.
The exsistence of a compatibility list does not means that ONLY those drives present in the list can work with the relative notebook.
Those drives are the ones tested and the ones that Toshiba says: "this drive surelly work" but not says "this is the only drive that work".
In fact I have RESOLVED the question with a little software I have found on another forum and now my drive works perfectly and I have a newer and more featured drive than those in the list.
Thank you Mike -
Hi,
I have installed Oracle 10g R2 on 64bit linux. It was working fine, until last week. I got alert that oracle uses 100% CPU.

When I log in to EM, I can see section
Host CPU
It is 100%.
I have only instance named "parama". and it uses 1% CPU ant the picture shows that 99% CPU is used By Other.
What is Other? Why does it use that much CPU?
I had another oracle instance few months ago, but I is not used now (it is not even started).
How do I restore normal system performance?
Can I kill these processes?Hello,
I have a similar problem. I see 2 perl processes related to Oracle that are taking up 99% of 2 cpus. These 2 perl processes have been running for days and keeping the load average high (above 2) on a mostly idle system.
The 2 perl processes are running:
/oracle/app/product/10.2.0/db_1/perl/bin/perl /oracle/app/product/10.2.0/db_1/sysman/admin/scripts/db/dbarchfull.pl
and
/oracle/app/product/10.2.0/db_1/perl/bin/perl /oracle/app/product/10.2.0/db_1/sysman/admin/scripts/db/dbresp.pl
Has anyone seen this problem? Can I kill the perl processes?

Major omission in a standalone package.
I recently read an article with Tom Hogarty, Lightroom product manager. When asked where Lightroom was going, obviously didn't give much away. However he did say maybe a ND filter effect. Well I hope Tom has more in store than that... It would be nic
