Firefox 3.6.9 - xmarks runs but does not complete; google search bar does not work

my xmarks will not synch - it just runs continually
my google search bar does not search - it just returns and does nothing - i read that having personas causes this - but i had them before
i understand there are other issues with incompatibilities in 3.6.9 - are fixes on way

  • The drop-down list that appears when typing in the Google search bar doesn't work. Clicking on an item on that list does nothing. This very useful feature is broken.

I just installed FireFox 4. In previous versions typing in the Google search box automatically created a drop-down list of items. One could click on an item on the list and proceed to a Google results page. In FireFox 4, the list appears but clicking on an item on the drop-down menu does nothing. It's broken and it was a very useful feature in previous versions.

  • I have all tabs set to open with Google search, but when I open a new tab and start typing, the letters appear in the address bar and not the Google search bar. It didn't used to be like this!

    Firefox 9.01; Windows 7 64 bit;
One of my set of home pages is the basic Google search page. When I open this, I can immediately start typing and the words appear in the Google search box.
If however I open a new tab (white cross far right of tab bar) and start typing, the words appear in the address bar, not in the Google search box. Of course once I click in the search box I can carry on: but I'd like to make it start there as it does with the homepage.

If you want a specific webpage (like the Google page) to always open when you open a New Tab, you can use the following add-on to Open New Tabs with your Favorite Pages:
    -> NewTabURL 2.2.3
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/newtaburl/
    * NewTabURL will not work until you set the page that you want to open in the Options for it.
    * click Add-ons > Extensions, click Options next to NewTabURL.
Check and tell if its working.
Not related to your problem but do the following:

  • Since upgrading to the latest version of Firefox (15.0.1) any keystrokes I enter into the Google search box do not register.

Hope someone can help with this! Since upgrading to Firefox 15.0.1 most, but not quite all, keystokes I enter do not register. I've checked that my keyboard is working and it's absolutely fine with any other applications, including Internet Explorer which I've had to resort to using in order to post this question, as I can't fill in the fields using Firefox.

A standard diagnostic to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings) is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [[Backing up your information]]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Safe Mode ([[Safe Mode]]) using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode."
If input boxes work correctly, this points to one of your extensions or custom settings as the problem.
Note that Safe Mode also disables hardware graphics acceleration. Before sorting through all your extensions, if you have noticed performance problems or display artifacts, try disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox (in normal mode).
You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
(WIN) orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced<br>
(LINUX) Edit > Preferences > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

  • Firefox menu bar appears- file/edit/history etc but the actual page with the search bar does not appear and is blank

when clicking firefox icon to open the internet, all that appears are the options along the top of the page. the rest of the screen does not appear revealing the desktop picture. The firefox page with the search bar does not appear.

  • My centre search bar will not work, I type in it then hit search or enter but no response, it does absolutely nothing. What is wrong and how do i fix?

when i start up firefox it loads as normal. I have the main web search bar (top left) and the google search bar (top right) then there is also the mozilla logo and third search bar just below it in the centre of the screen. This was my main bar as i liked the feature of left clicking in it and it instantly displaying my last searches and choosing from them what i wanted to do. Now it has just stopped working, it has none of my last searches stored and whatever i type in it doesn't matter anyway as it just doesn't do anything, it is totally non responsive. help please?

It works again, thanks. It was only a small thing but so annoying. Do you know why this happened so I can maybe avoid it in future?

Somehow my firefox logo is missing at the google search bar. I used to see the firefox logo when I opened firefox. Now all I see is the box to put the search terms in, nothing else. This happened once before and there was a real simple fix - but don't remember. it had to do with plug-ins or add-ons. I'm using xp

same problem here for the past two days till this morning when I created a new profile and removed ALL addons from the default profile. With the new profile with NO addons, I got to the sites with video that I had problem with and flash player did work.
Now, I only have three addons that have not created the problem; adblock, flashgot, and flashblock.
Create a new profile and check it out.

  • After dowloading Mozilla Firefox, I get nothing but a google search bar when I try to open Firefox

What details? My problem is that I do not have a home page as such; I have nothing but a google search bar. Can I uninstall; reinstall without the google thing?

'''about:home''' is the new Firefox 4 homepage, and all it really has is the Search Container, of which Google is the default. It is very easy to set your choice of a homepage or to set the old Firefox Start Page which was this: http://www.google.com/firefox

  • Firefox won't allow typing into Google search bar whereas Chrome will

    Hi,
I'm currently running Firefox 6.0.2 on Windows XP SP3 with Outlook 2003 SP3. No changes made recently to anything.
Suddenly several errors happening at once, most involving Firefox.
    1) Homepage Google. I cannot type anything in Google search bar.
If I replace it with e.g. Yahoo I can type anything, but replace it with Google and it is blocked again. I have re-booted, removed and replaced homepage etc no help.
    2) If I type www.hotmail.co.uk in Firefox address bar at top of screen it refuses to find the site. Nothing happens at all. Any other address I have typed in it had found ok, but this one remains blocked.
    3) It is difficult to see an immediate relationship to Firefox with this one, but it started at exactly the same time and also involves Google, so it is a bit of a coincidence otherwise. I keep getting Google delay messages on many of my emails. In fact they never get through, and I don't even have a Google email account!
I use SKY email, Outlo0k as above and both are working normally apart from the bizarre Google messages as below:

I have removed the actual email addresses but they were perfectly accurate. Resending the emails by cutting and pasting worked in all cases so it is hard to see why the originals failed.
I would be grateful for any help or suggestions
    Many thanks

In the address bar type "about:config" without the quotation marks.
Then in the Filter field type keyword.
    Then double click keyword.URL
and type or copy and paste the following: "http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=" without the quotations.
And there you have it. Your browser will use google to search.
These instructions were found here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Location%20bar%20search

  • When i select and try to load a page from the google search bar firefox freezes - firefox 4 win 7 bullguard antivirus.

When I search for something in the google search bar, the search completes but if I select a result firefox freezes and will not load the page. Pages load ok from bookmarks.

Were you typing in the search box on the Navigation Toolbar, or in the search box on a Google page?
Did the entire browser turn upside down, or just the page content?
Because you posted from IE10, the forum didn't capture any information about your plugins or extensions. Rather than compile a list, you might just try Firefox's Safe Mode, a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
    Can you replicate the problem?
Safe mode does not automatically disable plugins. If you want to rule those out as well, you can disable them here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category
    Any difference?

  • Middle click on search suggestions in Search Bar does not switch to new tab

I use profile option "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" = yes (check marked)
Middle clicking on a search suggestion in the Search Bar does open a new tab but Firefox does not switch to it.
This feature used to work for many years until very recently.
    Anybody have any ideas?

Did the problem start with the new search bar design in Firefox 34?
If you want to switch back to using the old bar, it's still hidden inside. Here's how you would do it:
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box that appears above the list, type or paste '''search''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click the '''browser.search.showOneOffButtons''' preference to switch it from true to false
This doesn't affect the current window, but each new window you open (Ctrl+n) will have the old Search bar.
I'm not sure when that will be phased out...
