Firefox 3 - Gnome Shortcut opens home directory?

Interesting change, and I don't know whether it's a bug, config option, or difference in the new firefox that gnome doesn't know about...but when I use my keyboard shortcut to open "Minefield," (I have it set as CTRL+ALT+F) it will open but will not display my homepage.  Instead, it displays my home folder.
Anyone else seeing this?  What's the fix?

I, too, experienced this problem after upgrading to Firefox 3. If I remember correctly, I also encountered the issue at some point with Firefox 2 on Ubuntu (before my switch to Arch). In both cases, I fixed the problem by changing my preferred web browser (as you described, except without deleting the ~/.mozilla directory).
On my system, at least, it seems that running firefox will execute /usr/lib/firefox-3.0/firefox:
$ which firefox
/usr/bin/firefox
$ ls -l /usr/bin/firefox
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 2008-06-21 19:02 /usr/bin/firefox -> /usr/lib/firefox-3.0/firefox
I'm not quite sure why this occurs. I suppose that the two methods of execution interpret the "%s" differently for some reason. Perhaps there's something odd about executing a symlink (in this case, causing Firefox to behave properly) or -- alternatively -- a problem with explicitly executing something in /usr/lib? (The latter doesn't seem like it would be correct, but this situation brings it to mind.) It could simply be the case that the interpretation of "%s" depends on the directory in which the executed firefox resides....
EDIT: It seems that someone else has had issues starting Firefox 3; however, they seem to have had an almost opposite problem....

  • Mail not opening, "Home directory is full" ???

I am unable to open my mail application. I'm getting the following error message:
"Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full.
You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume."
I don't understand. When I check my home folder there is plenty of space.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thank you
    Aaron Yassin

    Hello Aaron.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index.
Delete the Envelope Index file and empty the Trash.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on your Desktop for backup purposes.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import all mailboxes available within the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail.
Select OK and allow the import process to complete. It really isn't importing anything but replacing the deleted Envelope Index file and re-indexing (so to speak) all messages.
When completed and after confirming all mailboxes and messages are available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder from the Desktop.

  • Desktop shortcuts open home page

I recently installed Safari on my Vista PC. It works fine except...
    1. Any exiting Internet shortcuts on the desktop open my home page.
    2. Bookmarks created in Safari work when in safari but when dragged to the desktop open my home page.
    3. When using the "open with" option and selecting IE, the desktop shortcut created by Safari opens the correct url, but when Safari is selected, it opens my home page.
Is this by design or do I have a configuration issue??

Glad to hear it. Every once in a while scan again. Say once a month or so.
As you saw from the reports, one scanner picked up where another did
not. So use two or three scanners. Happy Computing.

The problem disappeared on its own.
This is as mysterious as its occourance.
However, here are my failed attempts at fixing it:
    1- I installed Nautilius.
    2- Sudo pacman -Syu
    3- Sudo -S nano

  • How do I enable opening firefox from two different computers sharing the same home directory without having to delete a lock file (linux).

I just don't want to have to delete a lock file - which has a purpose - in order to use firefox simultaneously from two locations on the network - where the home directory, i.e. .mozilla directory - is located

You need to use two separate profiles if you want to have two Firefox instances open at the same time.

  • Linux users cannot open Firefox on multiple systems that are mounting the same network drive as their home directory

I am supporting a user who is logging into multiple linux systems that all have the same /home directory mounted to a network filer.
When the user opens firefox on one system, he is unable to open firefox on other systems.
I'm assuming this is because firefox is storing his profile in /home.
These are Centos 5.4 x64 systems, authenticatiing to a Windows 2003 Domain. The filer that hosts the home directories is a NetApp with both CIFS and NFS permissions enabled on the volume that /home resides. We are using the version that came with the Centos installation, 3.0.12

So while this worked well for my computer at home, it does not work for the actual computer the disk is mounted on.  If I try to mount the disk as the "office" user, the computer rejects the connection to itself and tells me to access it locally.  Any ideas on how to handle this?  Thanks again.

  • Xf86homepage opens up my home directory

    Hi,
I use Gnome and in Keyboard Shortcuts / Launch web browser is tied to xf86homepage. So when I use this extra key on my keyboard it opens up firefox (as it is supposed to do) but opens a new tab with my home directory. I would like to see the last used tabs only.
I can't find any clue how to solve this issue.  I can live with, but I don't think it should work this way.

    Hi,
Do you mean to automatically open the last session in firefox.?
Im not sure if it's possible by default without any extension. Although I remember that default firefox has a built-in session manager.
But if you want to, you can install TabMixPlus extension, there is an option to restore the last session when browser starts.

  • Firefox won't open following update. Can't open Profile Mgr, even when using entire directory path in cmd line

I'm running Firefox on a Windows 7 machine. Firefox won't open following the latest update. I've read the help articles and it seems like I need to create a new profile because my settings have likely been corrupted. I'm unable to open Profile Mgr, even when using entire directory path in cmd line. I've tried the following commands in the command line:
    firefox -p
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p
    Nothing happens with either command.
I'm also running Norton Internet Security. I read a help article Re Virtual Browsing features possibly causing a problem. The article said to check the virtualization setting in the internet security software and to clear the virtual cache. I went thru all of the settings menus in Norton Internet Security version 21.6.0.32 and I didn't see anything that looked like 'virtualization" settings, so I assumed that this doesn't apply to me.
If you have any ideas, I'd sure appreaciate your expertise!!

hello arcandl, when firefox isn't launching after you double-click on the shortcut this is sometimes also a sign of malware being active on a system.
you might want to try running a scan with some different other security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] and [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner] which are specialised in removing adware and browser hijackers.

  • Firefox will not open saved desktop bookmarks, it always defaults to home page, why is that?

I like to launch Firefox by clicking on desktop shortcuts I have saved (bank, Netflix, Gmail, Amazon, Yahoo, eBay, etc...). With Firefox 29 any desktop shortcut now opens to my home page, Google. If I choose open to a blank page in the options, then all of my shortcuts open to a blank page.
In Firefox 28 all of desktop shortcuts worked just fine. I like being able to start Firefox on a specific page. Now it looks like I can only open to my home page or a blank page. This is terrible!!! I have tried creating new desktop shortcuts from Firefox 29 and I get this same results. Really terrible.
I can deal with the interface (which I really do not like now) but this simple lose of how I like to start Firefox is going to drive me away. Please fix or explain to me how I can launch Firefox from a shortcut and have it open that web page. Many thanks!

Sorry didn't work. I am using MacOS 10.6. New shortcuts created in FF29 have the same problem. If FF29 is not open, clicking on the shortcut opens FF to my default home page, never to the shortcut URL I clicked. For example, clicking an Amazon.com shortcut I just dragged to the desktop, then quitting FF29 and clicking the shortcut launches FF29 to my Google home page. If I change my default browser to Safari all of my desktop shortcuts open Safari to the right page. Chrome had the same problem but I couldn't stand Chrome so I don't care. This is definitely a FF29 problem.
I am really attached to FF in general and this is not a deal breaker, just a huge annoyance. Again, thanks for any help.

  • Firefox insists on opening last page visited even though it's supposed to open on home page.

My Firefox insists on opening last page visited even though it's supposed to open on home page.
Bad job guys, this is dumb, I am disappointed.

I deleted sessionstore.js it worked once but the issue re-occured afterwards. I don't have the file user.js.

Make sure that Firefox closes properly to prevent Session Restore from reopening those tabs.
Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.
You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Multiple_profile_files_created
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).
You can leave the sessionstore.bak file with the time stamp appended that Firefox creates automatically in case of updating.
There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes.
If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Found this on the "more like this" Worked like a charm!
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Move the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import mailboxes. Select OK and allow the import process to complete.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully imported and available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old Envelope Index file from the Desktop and this should resolve the problem.
