Firefox 3 scrolling

Hey everyone,
I recently started using firefox again since safari started crashing :⎛
I did notice that the scrolling is terrible in firefox - all jerky, especially when using the trackpad two-finger scroll. I got an addon for smooth-scrolling but that still doesn't make it feel like safari. The bad thing is that I notice it which I didn't with safari; it just felt like part of the system (which it is :⎞)
Does anybody else know how to make it feel more natural?
Thanks,
Jordan Hanrahan

Hi Jordan,
Same as Limnos here, I use FF2&3 both & no scrolling problem here at all, in fact I would say it scrolls better than any version of Safari.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Pages I view in Firefox are scrolling by themselves

The web pages I view in Firefox are scrolling by themselves when I move my mouse off the scroll bar. My mouse will be on the page (not on the scroll bar) and the page will jump up and/or down when I move the mouse to click something. How can this be stopped? It's quite irritating. I have disabled automatic scrolling but it does it regardless if it's on or off. I have another friend that this happens to as well. Thanks!

You seem to have added an automation curve for the track volumn.
Select the problematic track, and in the track header press the discloser triangle at the right border of the header. Then select "track volume". If it is active (marked by a green square) then deselect it. Now your volume control should stay as you set it.
Alternatively you could set your volume control in this automation track which will give you much more control then the volume slide.

    == Description
    ==
As I visited the referenced Web page, although the page displays normally, vertical scrolling is impaired. Clicking and dragging the vertical scroll "handle" DOES work. However, to scroll up or down by the height of the browser's display area, you'd click in the "blank space" immediately above or below the vertical scroll handle (comparable to using your keyboard's PageUp or PageDown buttons), and this is the scrolling method that does not work. Clicking the vertical scroll arrows does not work either.

This may or may not be related, but I was having a similar issue, and it was affecting the same page in Chrome as well!
Turns out my issue was that the page was calling home via AJAX and my bandwidth at the moment was impaired, as I was downloading a big file.
Once I stopped the download, everything went back to normal, with only a tiny hiccup on the page scrollbars once every some seconds, where they would get stuck for a few milliseconds.
This is probably caused by the page using synchronous AJAX calls, instead of asynchronous ones. Synchronous calls will block the browser until a response is received from the server. If bandwidth is compromised, this response will be delayed or even worse, not received at all, in which case the page will stop working (or at least this seems like what would happen, don't know if it is actually true).
    Hope this helps.

  • [UNSOLVED] Synaptics Touchpad & Firefox: Horizontal Scroll

Hey guys.. i'm having a problem with my laptop's Synaptics Touchpad and Firefox.
I can't seem to get my touchpad to allow me to scroll horizontally in the browser (when, say, there's a wide image on a page for instance). Whenever I try to scroll by sliding my finger side-to-side on the bottom edge of my touchpad, the page scrolls up and down, just like the vertical scroll on the right edge!
At first I thought it was a problem with horizontal scrolling on the Synaptics driver in general, but I discovered that if I have something like File Browser open, I can scroll horizontally with the touchpad, so the problem lies ONLY with Firefox.
I have looked for solutions already and everything I find only talks about a possible issue where Firefox might treat the Touchpad's horizontal scrolling and Forward and Back actions and how to fix this. But this is not the problem I am having. But I do have mousewheel.horizscroll.withnokey.action set to 1 in my about:config, which from what I've read is supposed to be correct to allow h. scrolling.
    Any ideas?

FYI, with my Synaptics touch pad and firefox, it works, but I have the mousewheel.horizscroll.withnokey.action set to 0 (default). In fact, all of the settings in about:config with 'mousewheel' in them are all at the default setting. I just had to setup the xorg.conf (old way) or the the /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics.fdi (new way) correctly to enable the horizontal scrolling.
    Good luck!

  • [SOLVED]Grand Paradiso(firefox 3) scrolling issues

I've had this problem for a while now, but it just recently started annoying me. In windows, I can scroll click in firefox and be able to scroll by moving my mouse. When I try this in arch, it tries navigating to whatever is in the "highlight scroll click" buffer. I really miss the smooth scrolling, is there a way to enable this?

Yes, if you go in Firefox's preferences and go to the General tab under Advanced, you can check the "use autoscrolling" and "use smooth scrolling" boxes; these are usually not enabled by default in Firefox.

  • I cant scroll with the mouse in firefox, the scroll works with other apps

i cant scroll with the mouse in firefox, am using firefox 26

Open a new window or tab. In the address bar, type '''''about:config'''''.
There is a search bar at the top. Type '''scroll.m''' (scroll<'''dot'''>m).
    The setting for
    '''general.smoothScroll.mouseWheel'''
    should be '''TRUE'''.

    -moz-scrollbar-track-background-color: silver;
    -moz-scrollbar-arrow-background-color: silver;

i just want to point out that there are several add-ons and extensions you can download to firefox and customize the browser's scrollbar. :)

  • Firefox Ignores Scroll Wheel

Installed Snow Leopard on Friday, and I'm only having one problem: Firefox is ignoring the scroll wheel on my Logitech LX3 Optical Mouse. The OS and all other apps seem to be fine. I followed a tip on tuaw.com to reinstall the Logitech Control Center, but it didn't fix the problem. I plugged in my Mighty Mouse, but it won't scroll either. I can scroll inside a textarea, but not the main Firefox window. Scrolling worked fine before the Snow Leopard upgrade.

that's weird. then I would try cdeleting com.mozilla.firefox.plist and maybe other mizilla plists from /users/username/library/preferences. then start firefox and see if that helps. another thing to try is clearing all user and system cache files. use YASU for that

  • Firefox smooth scrolling is sloppy

So I updated to the latest version, which is 33 iirc. A few days since, I've been getting the reoccurring issue of smooth scrolling being sloppy. It doesn't lag at all, but it is noticeably not as smooth. Only way to revert back is to click on my mouse wheel to scroll up or down with, or open a new tab. But it's only temporary and soon goes back to being sloppy.
I've had issues like this in the past with previous versions of FF. Also, whenever I put my PC in sleep mode, wake it up and start up FF, it'll perform the same way as well.
It didn't used to do that before, so I'm confused as to why it's doing this. I very rarely install extensions or add-ons.
It's kind of hard to explain since I can't obviously show anyone exactly what it's doing, but it's still kind of annoying.
    Thanks for the help!

    Hello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
#Open Firefox ''Options'' window (''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux) as follows:
#* Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options'' for Windows or ''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux.
#In the Firefox Options (or Preferences) window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

  • Why does Firefox not scroll the page when selecting & the cursor reaches the bottom of the screen

When selecting text on a screen page, when the cursor reached the bottom edge of the screen Firefox (9.0.1) does not scroll. Other programs (including IE) do so, so it does not appear to be a local computer problem.
I cannot see a setting on the options page that enables/disables this so what is the solution?

Enable the Add-ons bar (Firefox > Options or View > Toolbars; Ctrl+/) or the Find bar (Ctrl+F) to make Firefox scroll the page while selecting text.

  • Safari and Firefox jumpy scrolling

All of the sudden, wherever I am on any wireless or ethernet connection, neither Safari nor Firefox scrolls normally. It's jumpy and freezes a lot. This isn't a mechanical problem, because scrolling in other applications works as normal. It's become too annoying to be on line on this computer. Any suggestions?

    HI,
Sometimes mine does that also, especially with Safari. Restarting your Mac usually takes care of the problem unless it's chronic.

  • Firefox stops scrolling and partially freezes

    Hi,
When using Firefox on an Asus Transformer TF101 running Android 4.2 the browser will often stop scrolling up or down, and becomes mostly unresposive. You can still tap the address bar and cut/paste there, but you can't open any bookmark. Closing the browser temporarily solves the problem but it always comes back at some point.
This doesn't happen with other browsers including Chrome. This started happening maybe two or three updates ago.
Any ideas on how I can fix this?

I've been using the portable version of Firefox 3.5 for a while, and now I've upgraded to 3.6. In 3.6, the page scrolls more than in 3.5 when using the scroll wheel on the mouse. Is it possible to change this behaviour?

Thanks for the help, Gryllida, I've tried the zooming in/out feature, but it seems to only work on the headers or headlines on some sites; and still the reading text stayed small. I think I'll try the extension instead.
