Firefox 30 installed itself WITHOUT permission and I am SEETHING.

I'm on XP. I have Firefox set to let me know when there are updates, but to let me manually choose to install them. I had Firefox 28. It kept bugging me multiple times a day, usually when I was in the middle of something, to first install 29 and then 30.
I NEVER let it.
I came back from a break, pressed the space bar, and a Firefox pop-up was on the screen saying it was downloading an update. I pulled the wire cable connecting to the internet out, severing any connection, but it was too late. Firefox said it was installing update.
When I install updates from Firefox I use portable apps so I know it doesn't insert itself into other directories. This keeps my machine clean. I did not ask for or want an auto update.
What Happened?
Is this a new Mozilla policy, to badger users many times a day and then install even if they say, "No"?
Is there a virus in some new Firefox programs?
I run multiple antivirus scans, and don't think I have anything bad on my machine.

Thank you, Tyler. Yes, there is an important reason(s) I don't always upgrade.
Stability. The value of my time. Privacy.
With respect, every software maker thinks his or her company is the most important software on my computer (and rightly so... to an extent). I'd say 90% or more of the updates have no effect on the way I use my machine, but say, a 10%* probability of causing a conflict with other things on it that will require hours, sometimes days of my time to resolve, which your company is not going to pay me for. Very little or no accurate or complete information is provided as to what a given update will do.
*10% chance of problem means each update has a 90% chance of updating with no problem. Then after just 5 program updates (I'm talking about any combination of programs on my machine, not just Firefox) my reliablity is, what .9x.9x.9x.9x.9 = .59? You can see how stability drops rapidly for the user who regularly updates all of his or her programs all the time. And that doesn't count potentially unique plug-ins.
In this instance I just finished re-building my computer after hardware faults were causing it to randomly shut-down. This took hours of time over several days trying to troubleshoot. Took everything apart, checked, cleaned, reseated things and rebooted.
Then once I finally get it stable, Firefox after nagging and nagging and nagging and nagging and nagging and nagging (get it- nagging?) for 29 goes and upgrades itself to 30 without me being able to take a snapshot of my registries or doing the protective back-up steps I normally take before bracing myself and going through a round of multiple software upgrades as a part of regular maintenance.
I tend to respect Mozilla, but it is turning into a nagging shrew of a program. If it continues to take time away from my work, which by the way is not for Mozilla, volunteer or otherwise, I'll have to research and find something that works better for me.
I am particularly fearful and suspicious of any program that takes liberties with my system without my permission, as Firefox apparently just did. I am less likely to let a program like that on my machine at all.
As for the actual upgrade, there's nothing I can really do about it now, is there? I didn't object in theory, but you didn't give me the choice.
Please leave this post visible in case someone else experiences the same issue of Firefox upgrading itself without apparent permission.
Thank you.
PS, Assuming it is complete and accurate, It is good to know that Firefox installs in only one location (eg. no floating dlls, history files, etc) similar to using portable apps.

  • Flash player repeatedly installs itself without permission

I repeatedly have to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player 12 Plugin and Adobe Flash Player 12 ActiveX. Both of these repeatedly install themselves without permission. In Options > Options > Advanced > Updates I have the option "Check for updates but let me choose whether to install them" checked, and it has been that way for weeks. I work from home and am on the net all day aggregating news sources and with no flash I don't get bombarded with constant flash advertisements and sudden, loud noises. However, these two will install themselves at least twice a day, forcing me to manually uninstall them each time.

Plugins cannot be installed from inside Firefox. Plugins are software programs, like Firefox itself. They can only be installed by running their setup program (.exe file).
Flash Player is required to browse some sites, so it's safest to turn it off rather than uninstall it. To do so,
    # Press Ctrl+Shift+A to open the Add-ons Manager.
    # Click Plugins on the left.
    # On the right, set Shockwave Flash to "Never Activate" to turn it off completely. You can alternatively set it to "Ask to Activate" to be prompted to turn it on when browsing a site that has Flash content.

If you insist on getting rid of Flash Player, there's an uninstaller you can download to get rid of all installed versions. See the following page.

Just to recap, this is a collection of ports I have collected over time for people who needed this information when setting up the HP ePrint app so that they could view their email from within the app.  I am certain other applications also need this information.  Although lengthy, I could not find a more comprehensive place to retrieve this information.  Feel free to post additional information, faulty information, or other related topics below as this is simply a collection of data and it would be practically impossible to test all of them. • Why is FireFox reinstalling itself without asking me?

I'm using version 24 on both my desktop and laptop computer.
In the past 2 weeks Firefox has updated itself without asking me from version 24 to version 24.
Yes I know that sounds silly.
What happens next is not silly. After doing these unasked updates the new version of Firefox now has Tiles on the screen. I HATE tiles and need some way other then using MS WIN7 recovery and restore feature.
    A bigger problem is this!!!
The update not only closes all my open tabs. BUT it also deletes my BookMarks!!!!!!
It is like it's doing a complete uninstall and then reinstall.
There must be some way to restore only FireFox instead of doing a Windows recovery-restore
    and getting my bookmarks back.
Both my computers have done this. My laptop has done it once,
but my desktop is on it's second unappreciated reinstall.
I receive no advance warning about this automatic change but I noticed something wasn't right when doing a powerup the computer's do a restart. Then I know I'm screwed.
Did I mention how much I hate tiles?

    Hi there,
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
    * [http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx Microsoft Safety Scanner]
    * [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware]

    * [http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/ ESET Online Scanner]
[http://windows.microsoft.com/MSE Microsoft Security Essentials] is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Please be aware that you are not communicating with Apple when you post in these forums. The only people who will reply to your posts are we your fellow users.
Since you don't say what resources and methods you've been attempting to get this matter resolved, it's difficult to offer suggestions. But if your credit card has been used without your permission, your primary recourse should be to your credit card company to report the unauthorized charges and have them issue you a new credit card. If your card has been compromised such as to make unauthorized charges on the iTunes Store, it's highly probably that it can be used elsewhere.
As to removing the card number from your iTunes Store account,  see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1918
You should be able to change or remove the card information there. If not, go here:
    iTunes Support
and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store, if you have not done so already. If you have, please post back with a summary of what they told you and perhaps someone can offer additional suggestions as to how to proceed.

  • Adobe installing programmes without permission

I just installed an update for adobe reader and it installed google chrome as well, I don't recall giving permission for this. Is there a way of stopping adobe doing things like that in future?

Adobe offer Chrome or other stuff when you download from http://get.adobe.com/reader .
    I wish it wouldn't.
It is clearly shown as "Optional offer" in the middle column of the page and can be turned off.
Did you go to that page? If not, you might have malware which is downloading what it claims to be updates, but could in fact be anything. If you continue to get update reminders for Adobe Reader despite updating, that's especially likely.

  • Firefox updated twice without permission. Why? I set "no auto update"!

I am the only account besides admin.
Firefox updates after shutdown even though automatic updates are disabled.
I rely on certain plugins and telling me they are disabled after an update is unacceptable, with no easy way to revert to older version.
Posting this with SeaMonkey which still works.
Google update doesn't show in plugins and has been disabled through windows.

    Thanks to both of you.
I am grateful for your efforts and realise that Firefox is volunteer based.
However well intended, forcing someone to accept updates is too much like Microsoft/Big Brother.
I never install xx.0 of anything and offering work arounds for this isn't acceptable.
I don't want to give up on Firefox as many folks I know have.
Please just make it comply with "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them".
That's clear enough, and I'd still be notified.
Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

  • I have Firefox installed on both desktop and laptop. Firefox is NOT recognizing my settings (to open with previous tabs, etc) on the desktop only. How do I fix this.

I have opened/closed browser numerous times, after "updating" and resetting my preferences. The settings "match" on laptop and desktop. Laptop works like a charm; desktop not at all.

Since you have encountered the problem at other sites, not just Firefox, I'd bet that it is an Internet Explorer problem, not the web sites. Actually, I am sure it is an IE problem.
Try running Windows Update, perhaps there are some updates for Internet Explorer that might resolve the problem. If you don't know how to run Windows Update, use the Help on your system to look for information on Windows Update.
If that does not help, use Google to search for information on IE9 locking up when downloading.

  • Mac Defender malware installed itself without password

Good afternoon to all, I'm new to these forums and wish I had subscribed sooner, if I had I would have been aware and not caught by surprise when browsing Facebook yesterday the Mac Defender malware window popped up, I foolishly clicked the install tab first and looked up info next, realizing what it was I proceeded to remove it and download 2011-003, I also made sure firewall is on and Safari open safe files off, I changed all my passwords and canceled my credit cards even though I did not see any requests for that info nor the **** sites other Mac users have reported, after doing that to protect my machine from further trouble I still feel uneasy, embarrassed and disappointed at myself about my laziness and complete ignorance about the workings of my computer, I'm ashamed to say this but prior to yesterday I did not know there was a thing called firewall or anything about Safari settings etc. Well in a way I'm glad that this happened because I am now going to educate myself, I love my Mac and will never be caught off guard again, my question is, are there any further steps I should take to get it pristine clean like it was when I purchased it? If this is a dumb question I apologize, thanks in advance for any advice.

I also made sure firewall is on...
That's not necessary if you have a router, and it won't protect you from malware at all.
I changed all my passwords and canceled my credit cards...
MacDefender doesn't steal passwords or credit card numbers as far as anyone knows. You enter the credit card number voluntarily. If you didn't do that, you didn't need to cancel the cards.
...I did not know there was a thing called firewall...
Again, the firewall wouldn't have helped in any way. It's not a malware filter.
...are there any further steps I should take to get it pristine clean like it was when I purchased it?
If you followed the instructions to remove the trojan, and it's no longer running, then it's gone.

  • Install AD Without DNS and use other dns

    hello evrybody
i have dns server for local network + my users + and web site domain
now , i need install active directory .but ad install dns and must set ad dns for all domain users
how to install AD and use my dns server ?

Install AD with DNS on domain controller (better is two DCs) and use public DNS to refer to for public names. Redirect DNS settings on clients to domain controller(s).
DNS that AD is using should contain resource records that allow cliets to find domain controller. As you have not specified your current DNS, it seems more direct procedure to do it in the above way.
REad some info in Technet before you start change of your system to avoid problems.

  • CPU downclocks itself without permission in 990fxa GD-65!

    Hello, i'm using X6 1090T @ 3.7ghz (CnQ and C1E disabled) with MSI 990FXA GD-65 with the latest bios 19.9.
When i open the computer for the first time (usually mornings), i see that cpu speed stuck at 800mhz, the speed which CPU decreases itself when CnQ is enabled. After when i restart, it corrects itself automatically.
I never had this problem with the old 19.6 BIOS. Yet, i've tried 19.7,19.8 and 19.9 ones, and all of them has the very same issue. Do i miss something or its the BIOS' fault? What should i do?
    Thanks in advance..

Put your computer under load, and the CPU speed will increase. That's how CnQ (Cool And Quiet) works.

  • Ad on installs without permission

There is this addon which installs itself without permission. It's called funklyrics 1.122 it seems to be able to turn itself on even after being disabled. It seems to do the turn back on by way of an update. The program itself seems to be harmless but puts up small adds trying to sell item that your usually looking at. I just disabled it again it updated today to ver 1.122 on 07/16/2013
Is there a way to permanently remove this adware from Firefox?

Do you see this as a Firefox extension in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions"?
If you can't uninstall an extension then this means that it is installed globally, possibly via the Windows registry.

  • Firefox Install Issue

    pacman -S flashplugin
warning: directory permissions differ on usr/lib/mozilla/
    filesystem: 700 package: 755
Flash didnt work in Firefox (via normal user, but worked with root)
    Then I run
    chmod 755 /usr/lib/mozilla/ ; pacman -S flashplugin
Installed normally without warnings and now works.

don't have to reinstall flashplugin. i was installed successfully the first time but for some reason you had /usr/lib/mozilla with wrong permission.
the only thing that you had to do is that chmod.

  • Firefox 6 hangs without an error message/crash report when I try to run it.

I've been running a previous version of Firefox 3.x without incident and just tried upgrading to Firefox 6. I've had this same problem with trying to upgrade to Firefox 5 in the past. The installer runs fine and reports no problems. The first time I try to run Firefox after installing, I get a dialog box saying something along the lines of "Checking your add-ons for compatibility..." and the application IMMEDIATELY hangs. I have to kill the process from Windows Task Manager. Afterwards, trying to run Firefox simply results in no visible instance of anything running, although the process still hangs in the background taking up 25% CPU and ~10-20MB of memory. However, when I try opening a locally saved .html file, Firefox successfully runs and initially loads/displays the page, THEN hangs. I've closed as many background applications as possible and still get the same problem.

I've been having the problem with as few as two tabs opening. The only time it does not do it is in safe mode. I have cleared my history, turned on the plugins one at a time, and run virus check. With any plugins turned on, it hangs every couple of web pages opened.
When I clicked on post for the above answer, Firefox got hung up for 30 seconds.

If I must replace it where do I get an older version?
    Thanks

Firefox '''4 '''versions '''and later do not run on a PowerPC Mac''' and require at least OS X 10.5 and an '''Intel Mac'''.
The latest''' supported''' version for your os is '''3.6.26''' , your are fully updated.
